When i worked as a mechanic we cleaned the rims before balancing it. That was to make sure the balancing was correct and that the weights got stuck real good. What the guy in this video did was a crappy job. Wouldn't be surprised if the weights fall off soon.
Bad form not removing all the rubber debris before checking the balance & then to not clean the patch of alloy before sticking the wheel weights. They will fall off. I know you cant comment on this James as its promotional work but maybe have a word with Michelin. Any garage worth its salt would have done those two basic things.
Stephen Gibson I agree I use to balance tyres and always cleaned wheel first before fitting tyres and balance ever little bit on wheel throws balance out.
Mr JWW, You need to have a talk with the people at that Michelin Training Center . There is no way that tire and rim should have been balanced with the old weight still on the rim and the excess rubber from track days. I can't believe that they would do that even if you weren't filming it, but to do it on camera, WOW. I love and have used Michelin tires since 1970 and don't expect something like this from Michelin. Please let us all know what there answer was for doing the balancing this way.
So they use an impact gun on the center wheel nut when it tells you not to use one. They balance the wheels with the rubber from previous track days. They stick weights onto a dirty wheel. They balance the wheels with the old weights. And they use silver weights on a black rim. Not so professional michelin.
Actually, looking at it again it is even worse. They balanced the rim with all the rubber marbles still stuck to the rim. That guy shouldn't be employed to sweep the floor.
Absolutely agree! ‘The best training and knowledge on tyres’ yet they balance a wheel with huge rubber marbles still stuck to the wheel...poor effort Michelin!
Tell you what my little tyre shop down the road would have cleaned off the old track rubber off the wheel barrel and cleaned off the patch before sticking the weight on..... Not so flash there Michelin!
'Special torque measurement'? All cars have wheel nut torque specifications. May not be as high as the porsche 600nm but the principle is no different plus that technician should have cleaned the wheel before balancing and placing the weights on. This is level 1 light vehicle technician stuff.
OK, sorry to be critical James, but the fact that they didn't remove all the rubber inside the rim before balancing is ridiculous. They need to be fully cleaned prior to going on the balancing machine. If not, it trows off the actual readings which, on a car that will see high speed use, is very important.
Have to agree James switching to Michelin Tyres is unbelievable. I changed my P Zeros to Pilot Sport 4 S on my Cayman and it is a world of difference. Have to agree with other comments, please tell me the fitters cleaned all debris away before balancing???
Seems like we all noticed the inability of the Michelin guys doing an absolutely a decent job of weighing your wheels with old weights still in and using silver instead of black,to match the wheels and leaving the torn rubber bits in while weighing the tires... Would love for one of us to get a reply on those situations please,if you don't mind, that is,thank you! :)
You need to invest in the wheel locating peg especially with Ceramic brake disks being that close to the rim...... without the locator to slide the wheel on and off you run the risk of chipping the ceramic disk (which as you will be aware is not cheap to replace), even with the best intentions i wouldn't let anyone remove my wheel without it. (google 3R Racing 2010+ Porsche Center Lock Wheel Mount/Dismount Alignment Tool) they are not cheap but then considerably cheaper than a ceramic disk.

This is seriously cool stuff, tires are already very complex and intricately engineerd pieces of rubber. This connected tire project takes it to the next level though. You"ve got smart tires, what is this world!
EXCELLENT details and video - agree with the central point - tires must be tested first and all the tech/engineering of any car comes down to 4 rubber contact patches.
What a weird coincidence but I’ve just dropped my wife off in her fiat 500 and it had same mileage as yours! 5452. How strange! Except she’s had hers over a year! 😜
Very cool video James...and also very instructive. I really appreciate and I think a lot of people...we always learning things with your videos. Last comment I suggest videos of tires and suspension. I have another great suggestion...what about aileron, spoiler, bumper wings? Do you think will be possible to put your GT3 in a wind tunnel and learn more about aerodynamic???
Some cool (new to me) details that you shared in this video. I just swapped out some well used Super Sports for a set of Pilot Sport 4S. They were a big improvement 👌!
How about doing a test of the GPS controlled exhaust valves. I'm installing a Sharkwerks bypass on my GT3 shortly and due to experience with exhaust bypass on the GT3 I'm looking into the mentioned GPS possibilities for the valves. That way, you can use either pre programmed GPS coordinates to shut the valves and not trigger the microphones on tracks, or create your own points. I can find some links for the products if needed.
Loving your GT3 videos as always Mr JWW. I actually ordered a Miami Blue Porsche just off the back of following your Vlog. I hope Porsche are giving you commission! PS- Still waiting to see your Curacao Blue McLaren in a side-by-side video to compare the gorgeous colours.
I think james referring to grip is what hes really trying to say.. from what i picked up what hes saying.. a good set of tyres will improve the cars power transfer to the wheels.. a good gripping tyre will obviously stick to the ground and help rotate the power
I can’t believe that even the tyre manufacturers use the horrible 5-10-5-10 ribbons of wheel weights. This spreads the weight over a wider area than needed. Much better to use oe style weights where if a 30g weight for example would be a single piece, so more concentrated rather than 5-10-5-10 ribbon. I bought a selection box from Trax - much neater and looks oe.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the house key through the tire. But then, it's not quite 7 am on Saturday. Cool video as always, James! Cheers!
Good looking set of tires James. Question though, at what speed does the fitment of those sensors become an issue when it comes to tire balance? What I am referring to is how centrifugal force is going to make those chips heavier and heavier as you increase the speed you are traveling.
Interesting , but cleanliness , is paramount , when balancing anything , and that didn't look clean to me , a bit shoddy , and captured on video ,not the greatest advert 👎🏽
Not removing the old rubber chunks on the barrel, but the fitter shows off the dynamic balancing machine!! Also doesn't bother to clean the area were the new weight is stuck.
This video is a clear indication that JWW does not actually have sufficient basic technical understanding of cars or the cars that he owns. So many rudimentary installation errors in this video which have been highlighted in the comments section, yet were not picked up by JWW himself.
