Eric! You sir are an absolute legend and saved me and my son a roll of FP4+ that we'd rewound into the canister and being on holiday I didn't have my leader retriever with me. Thank you very much. *
Had a roll of kodak portra 400 sitting on my bedside table for two weeks because I couldn't get the leader out with a film retrieval tool. Tried your technique, worked first time, I'm over the moon, thank you so much 🙂
You saved me a roll of film :) - tried swapping film between two cameras but accidentally rewound too fast and lost the leader, this worked a charm! Thank you
Fantastic! practical real world solution to a common problem. Thanks a million Eric Just done 12 rolls of film using this method 1 failed saved me 15 euro buying a film retriever. Got the hang of it after a couple of rolls.Brillant!
I miss loaded my OM-1 a few days a go causing me to rewind an unexposed roll of film, though it was wasted. Googled "retrieving film leader" this video was the first thing that came up, your technique worked a charm. Thank you very much
Thank you so much for your tip!! It saved my life, super effective but of course I was too excited when the film rolled out that I put it immediately and didn't read last tip about not putting wet end inside, I hope it won't cause much damadge
Tnx a lot! it worked after some tires, *tips* if the film grabs the other one but doesn't come with when you pull, twist it 20degrees as if spoling it up (for each pull try) and try again until the end of the roll is in the right position inside the canister.
You beauty! Had a roll of lomochrome purple that had retracted back into the canister a year ago that was resistant to my lead extractor tool. This worked first time! Glad to be able to finally shoot with this stuff
DUDE! You’re a fucking film angel! I still have over half a roll of Portra 400 that I thought was never going to see the LIGHT of day. Yes, I’m proud of that joke.
Great tip, but remember to hold on to a part of the new film while using it to pull the old film from its canister. Don’t just pull on the new canister. I ended up unwinding (and exposing) half of the new film trying to salvage a couple of frames from the old roll. Got the tip out eventually!
Wow! Great Tip, worked second time!! My poor Canon died mid-roll, but I get to test the new Yashica with the second half :) Tried a different method in the past and it didn't work.. This is so easy!
OMG... that’s terrific! Just watched your informative video on the Nikon N8008s and was disappointed that the camera self winds for this exact reason. Now I don’t have to worry about it... thanks again!
Good evening, Eric! I had to use that tip today. Went out to shoot a roll of Ilford Pan F today. Despite the Canon FTb having a quick load system, one can still have it not catch the leader right. The rewind knob was not turning so I went to rewind a tiny bit into the canister to do it again. As luck would have it, I did not notice the leader pulling free of the takeup spool (maybe it never caught) and rewound into the canister. Anyway, I had a second roll of a different speed in case I wanted to shoot that. So I opened that roll and did what you showed us. Worked great! Thank you so much! This is a good reason also to carry a second roll of film with us at all times! :)
Definitely!!! 👍🏻 Forgot to add that next month will be 30 years since I bought my first SLR, a Canon EOS 620 and a 50mm 1.8. I’ve already got a roll of Ektar 100 for it as it is the closest to what I used back then, Eastman 5247 and Ektar 125. It’ll be just with the 50; my L glass and the tele are staying home.
Nice tip, thanks, gotta try this some day! I have point and shoot camera as my second camera what rewinds the film that it goes totally inside the canister and I just used lots of force with pliers on dark bag and broke the canister and took the film out. This methods seems much better :D Maybe I load a film to that camera and test the roll to see how this works :)
Simplest and most effective! I got so emotional when I saw the film came out. Thank you I’ve been doing this for 30 mins. and I have a trip later. 😂 whooo!
I just tried this, but instead of the “inside” film coming back out, the “helper” film pulled out of its canister about 8 inches. Haha If you do this, hang on to the helper film. I did finally manage to get the film retrieved. Thanks for the video.

Thank you Eric. Saved me a roll of Tri-X and no need for a retriever tool. 😊😊😊

How cool is that?! Just tried it, and with a bit of jiggling the ‘used’ film around, it worked!!!
Thank you so much for your tip!! It saved my life, super effective but of course I was too excited when the film rolled out that I put it immediately and didn't read last tip about not putting wet end inside, I hope it won't cause much damadge
You sir are a magician. A gentleman and a scholar. Thank you.

50 years ago my dad used to do the same trick, but could I remember how until now? Love your videos.
Thanks so much

Amazing. Had a roll of 800 tungsten that did not like my picker. This worked first try lol.
Wow. I'm speechless. This worked first time. You're a lifesaver. Now please don't ask me how I managed to roll my Portra 800 back into the cassette.
Took me a couple of tries, but was finally able to do it, Thanks!

I did the same but thankfully I realised what was happening after your comment so thank you for that!
Really should’ve read this comment earlier 😭
