- Ireland v Australia at the Aviva Stadium was going to be the last game in the 2024 Autumn International Series. It was also a huge occasion for Irish Rugby as the Union would celebrate its 150th anniversary.
In addition to that there was to be another milestone during the game, check out the video to find out what that was.
In this episode of Inside Rugby with Mark I take an in depth look at the game and we find out if Joe Schmidts Wallabies were able to spoil the party in Dublin this weekend.
Thank you for supporting my channel by subscribing to the channel, and by liking this video. I appreciate it a lot.

Congratulations to the Irish. Wallabies in the hunt but just not good enough on the day. We are in far better shape than 12 months ago and should be proud to take the world number 2 down to the wire.
Aussies looking good, defense looks much better, made a mess of our ruck ball and our attack was generally going nowhere.
Ireland won due to several players skill and good defence. The attack has lost its teeth. They need some new ideas with attack. The aussies look good and are making progress. I think it's a matter of time together and the aussies will challenge the lions. Pity they don't have an international window between now and then.
Feel fortunate to eke out a win Mark.Lots of room for improvement.. It was great to see Joe back in Dublin with a formidable, vastly improved Aussie team, bristling with confidence and on the front foot...Always great to hear your take on the game..
Line out, discipline and handling errors need to be corrected, if that's corrected we should be much better for the six nations.
@@leonardodavinci7425 Yes, all fixable but these problems have persisted for a while now. You have to give credit to the opposition, but I think if we can improve on these areas, we will make it much easier on ourselves. I wonder if Andy going away to coach the Lions has affected the player confidence and that is shown up on the field?
Congratulations to Ireland on your win and celebration of 150 years.Mark enjoyed your review great effort cheers😊. Ireland are so good at building pressure and working to dominate territory, I'd picked wallabies to win by 2 points but Ireland were too good.good effort by both teams
@Jon-bk2yw Thank you for the comment
Aussies are trending in the right direction and the Lions tour looks much more promising now than a month ago. Ireland are 3/4 in the autumn series but could so easily have been 1/4. We need to fix the lineout that's been a well-known shambles now for over a year and improve significantly for 6Nations.
It was especially bad today.
Australia are really looking good and the fact that they lost by such a narrow margin away from home against what was the #1 team in their own back yard speaks volumes of their progress. Well done to the Wallabies
Ireland is most definitely not the no.1 team anymore.
@@mahlanguism most definitely not
Correct, they have been number 2 for a while now.
@maakstemdik007 Yes it's also what you do when making comments on YT
@geoffnelson6756 shame, are your feelings hurt?
Well done to Aus for getting so close and I knew that Joe would have you ready for this one. Ireland in general haven't been great this Autumn though. Key players seemed out of form and a general malaise seemed to spread throughout the team. Uncharacteristic handling errors and poor discipline gave access to the opposition. This is strange and uncharacteristic, and I wonder is there a bit of anxiety with Farrell going to coach the Lions and is this affecting things on the field? We have introduced some new players this Autumn so that is positive. Furlong and Sheehan were definitely missed so hopefully getting them back will improve things for the Six Nations. I think our flaws are obvious, but they are all fixable. I loved Paul O Connell as a player, but our lineout has been terrible for a while now and it might be good to get someone else to coach this area.
Great point re the kicks coming up short for the wallabies- it's really the sort of point that a learning fan like myself wouldnt necessarily see or notice on the tele.
@garethbarry3825 you are welcome and thanks for the comment
great review mark. thankyou.
the kicking game is by far australias biggest weakness.
the lineout also needs to improve.
the australian defense was massive, hiuge bone shaking hits which caused a lot of irish turnovers.
the irish are going ok. they have been loosing a few key players to retirement. theyll get better as they play more games together.
again the kicking game is australias weakness.....
the SOLUTION.....
get nathan cleary from penrith rugby league team....
@markbph2336 Yes indeed.
Has any one spoken to Clearys Dad and given him the wink ?
Mark, a great match summary from you once again. I love listening to your summary as you point out things that I may not have noticed. Honestly, as an Irish fan I did not find that an easy watch, my heart was in my mouth A LOT of the time!! After JVDF’s try I thought, great here we go but it didn’t quite happen like that. I wasn’t really happy until the final whistle blew, then I could breathe.
I thought Australia looked good, and a massive improvement from a year ago. Joe Schmidt has already done a great job there.
Thought again that Gus McCarthy looked great, long may that last! Craig Casey is sooo enthusiastic and very nippy, and I was pleased for Jack Crowley, I thought he gave a confident performance urging the time he was on.
Thanks for acknowledging and showing respect for our 150th Year Anniversary and Cian Healy’s record number of caps.
Ps. What did you think of the new Vest?
@lizzyhanahoe4197 Thank you for the great comment, and for acknowledging the role Australia played in the game.
Australia played a disruptive style of game and Joe Schmidt nearly nailed it when it came to pulling off a win.
I love the new vest, absolutely brilliant, we should see more of that across the world to acknowledge and remember the history of our great game.
Meant to say, I am going to my very first rugby match!! My neighbour is taking me to
Wales v Ireland at The Principality, I am beyond excited!! He’ll be wearing his Red vest and I’ll be wearing my Green vest amongst the Welsh supporters. Look forward to your 6Ns contributions!! ☘☘
@lizzyhanahoe4197 FANTASTIC.....thats so exciting and the Principality is a great stadium. Make sure you enjoy everything about the game and come back and tell us all how was your first experience.
I didn't expect the result to be that close. Well done to the Aussies. Very scrappy. Good win for Ireland, when not playing well.
Bookues had Ireland as a 15 point win, but all the recent games have been 3 points regardless of ranking, so I thought it would be a nailbiter.
@adrianincapetown7043 How could you not expect that result after watching my preview video when I predicted it :-)
Glad that Ireland got the win but boy did they have to work hard for it mainly thanks to a resilient Aussie defence which was so much better than last week.
Australia are in such a better place than they were last year and I agree with you that the Lions tour will be very competitive which is what we all want. Kudos to Joe Schmidt for turning things around there. He's a top class coach.
As for Ireland there was still some recurring and worrying patterns in this game like very wobbly lineouts and handling errors even though things got a lot better in the 2nd half. Ireland will not retain the 6N title if these issues are not sorted out pronto. The likes of France, Scotland and England will exploit those.
Other than that though there was some very good individual performances. Craig Casey is becoming a great scrum half now and he adds a lot of zip to the team when he comes on. And great to see Gus McCarthy get his 2nd try in two games. These are the guys who we'll need in 2027 so nice to see what they can do now and in the future.
Thanks for all your analysis on all the Autumn games Mark. We were treated to some great games and looking forward to the 6N now.
@vladtheinhaler6579 Top post, thank you for it. Agree on Casey and McCarthy (Gus) will be nicely positioned come 2027.
The 6N will be tasty for us neutrals in 2025, a dog fight for top spot.
Well done Ireland very good side as a whole. Australia are improving fast. Both be in the hunt 2027 if they continue. Irelands 10 will be looking at best 10 in the world in a few years. Rob Valetini is an awesome loose forward and Bundee Aki best 12. I hope TMOs get banned in the future. Spot on with your score prediction.
@hawkprecision7878 I understand the love you have for your own players, but as a neutral when it comes to No 10´s Sacha Feinberg Mngomezulu and Tomas Albornoz are way ahead of your lad at this stage. He has much to learn yet.
@ I am an All Black supporter. Should make my comment neutral. He was impressive directing Irelands backs and touch finding. If he continues to get better he will be hard to beat. Marcus Smith the best 10 I think. Tomas Albornoz is definitely good.
As an Irish supporter, I reckon if we don't improve we could end up in 3rd or 4th place after the 6 Nations
3rd or 4th would be fine if we are introducing new players, both NZ and SA were floating around 3rd or 4th prior to the WC.
We could be 3rd or 4th in the 6N, never mind the world rankings. The gaps between the top teams are becoming smaller and smaller, and it wouldn't take much for couple of narrow wins to become a couple of narrow losses. No chickens being counted by this Irishman.
Prendergast vs Noah L. Territory stats says it all.
@rossd6809 No contest
Aussie will be dangerous with Joe if he stays past 2025. So good for southern hemisphere Rugby so far 🙌🏼
@rebeccalockyer My gut tells me he will walk, and the Wallabies will be left in a hole.
Australia really need a better fly half; but no matter, they still pushed Ireland to a far closer game than I predicted, however, Ireland won out by sheer graft, they just had too much fire power in the forwards.
@rabbitss11
thanks so much for sharing your views.
Spot on, Lolesio really needs to work on his kicking game. Goal kicking and restarts pretty solid but clearing kicks and penalty distance is weak. Lots of upside if he can get this right.
@stuartcarruthers2915
Can not disagree with you at all. Thanks for the comment
Excellent point and reiterated by Schmidt "playing conservatively" possession! possession ! possession! Good analysis. Work on your "gonnas" and your "preformances."
@thingme9941 thanks for your comment, what you get from me is what you get from me. Enjoy.
Congratulations to Ireland on 150 years and the win.
Australia brought the dog to the game. That loose forward trio is World Class. Ireland seems to be playing for the TV infringements. James Lowe World Team wing, yeah right. According to the Irish Pundits World Nr1 team... Unable to see the very little progression of their Gameplan... Teams reading the attacks better.
I have heard irish pundits specifically saying that we are not number 1. I haven't heard what you heard. James Lowe is living off past glories. World rugby has a long history of awarding players a year later than they should. Look at this year's world player of the year nominations.. Ireland need a rebuild and possibly a different line out coach.
Gus McCarthy needs go from #3 to #2 at Leinster. Australia definitely on the right direction but Lions tour unfortunately is b4 the Championship. How many games and against who will you play your warm up games?
@MarcelAspenite Yes great point, the lack of pre games for the Wallabies will definitely not be a good thing.
Just for info, the audio dips from time to time. Might be when you do edits.
Just for info, it is suppose too.
Really thought the Aussies were going to win that one. Not a fan of the stop start refereeing style of
That Italian ref but probably wouldn’t have changed the result.
Based on how Ireland rugby is playing now, I’d say Scotland beat us in Murrayfield, and France beat us at home as well. I’d say we beat England at home for a 3rd place 6 nations.
I won't believe Scotland beats us until it happens.
England first game up could be tricky if they rock up. But all 3 games could go either way
You couldn't really put a cigarette paper between four of the teams in the 6N at the moment. I'd say the French probably have a slight edge at the moment, but the margins are tight all round. Four strong teams in the SH too - is a great time to be a fan, as so many matches cannot be predicted with any confidence
@RossoVerdeNero agree. But if france show up they'll mop the floor. But it's 2 months away and anything can happen.
Australia looked a bit ordinary...to loose when the opposition was having a bad day....can't seem to know when to kick or run
How 🤔 come no nasty Ireland comments here like on other channels you posted yesterday?
My thoughts on the game .Australia are the victims of blooding a average to poor referee .Australia were robbed of a blatent knock on in which the Irish scored from .NO TRY and that was replayed and still not picked up .Shocking as why do we have the TMO for .And a Head shot in which an Irish offender should have been sent off to the bin .
Nothing to see here move on
🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼😢😢😢😢😢
And Valetini's knock on? The ref let the game flow.
Ireland have been great the last 6 years, but their level has dropped off.Their lineout is a mess, general play patchy and lots of penalties.Their classy backline was nullified and many nations have figured them out.On what they produced against Aus, they won't win the 6 nations. If they struggled to put Aus away, that is still developing under Schmidt, they are in real trouble. At some point they will drop from world top 4.
@michaelleonjames1182 Loved your comment thanks for making it, here are some of my views in response.
Line out needs work for sure, so yes to that.
Don´t forget , you beat SA in SA this year, and as I always say, games between the top teams can go either way on many occasions.
Re Australia, many people, perhaps including yourself, are not quite seeing yet how good this Aussie team is. It wasnt for me the case of Ireland failing to put Australia away, Australia were right in that game, and they created opportunities and forced Ireland into errors.
I suspect Ireland to remain in the Top 3 sides in 2025, as Argentina, France and now Australia will be fighting for the spots below.
@@insiderugbywithmark Hi Mark, I'm an Australian rugby fan.If a nation has potential to break into top 4, Scotland deserves a shot at it.Whether they actually do it,we'll see I suppose.I rate Ireland, but I don't see SA NZ and FR, their level of Rugby dropping off.Have a great day Mark, and we'll see what unfolds in 2025 in Rugby.
It's Australia. Not exactly a powerhouse at the moment. And Ireland IMHO are talking themselves up as the best team in the world. Constantly. They're not.
Ireland know France are the best team in the world when they are bothered
Not this Irishman. South Africia are the best hands down. Ireland were woeful this Nov. No where near whats needed . Well done Australia and Joe Schmidt! Every Irish rugby person knew when Joe was selected at the helm in Australia that their graph would trend upwards and so it has. Well done Australia.
@@KewKew-do3kq remindwhen did France win a rugby world cup?
They havent once talked themselves up .Thats the media.Nothing to do with the team.Thats why the Sa hate them
I wish these people who keep re-hashing this tired narrative about the Irish talking themselves up as the best in the world would back up their nonsense by pointing to some concrete examples of the Irish management team or captain indulging in such bollox. Yes, there have been one or two pundits who are guilty as charged, but they are paid to sell papers or on-line clicks. The vast, vast majority of knowledgeable Irish fans have never believed any hype like that. The big Quarter Final Fact remains. The rankings are just stats, and not the ones that really matter in the cauldron of the RWC. So, in summary, wind your neck in. Don't confuse one or two deliberately contentious pundits by pretending they are "Ireland".
