@@rclark777 I think the point is, for example if you need smoke you can simulate this using a particle system - or just use smoke. Our reliance on CGI is still far too heavy in capturing a sense of atmosphere, even in 2049 for example.

It takes more merit sculpting models and scenery by hand than letting a computer create for you perfectly symmetrical shapes from which to derive everything else in under half a second
That opening with Vangelis was soo amazing to me. I couldn't recognize anything that would resemble Los Angeles lol. It goes to show how far industry,science, and corporate power have swallowed up the land. No trees or animals in sight. Probably extinct. Which would explain the artificial animals.

Neon lights are currently being phased out and replaced by LED's. - The window at 0:44 is full of CRT televisions. They have long been replaced by Digital TVs' - There is not indication of an internet. Dekkard is still using a newspaper for information. - There are flying car presumably using a form of eletrogravidic propulsion that we don't even know is possible.

The special effects for this movie were off the charts excellent.....40+ years later, this is superior (by far, I think) to the vast majority of special effects I've seen since.

Watched BSG this summer and I was sure I had seen the guy who played Bill Adama somewhere before but just couldn't pinpoint where. At that time there was an era of STR (scientific-technical revolution), and the future after 40 years looked like this - completely fantastic. Although there are no lasers in the film.
