Spinner Supercut

  • I threw this together mainly because I love flying cars (shocking!) and Blade Runner proposes an idea on that concept that is very idiosincratic: the Spinner has doors like a car (a lambo no less!) but at the same time it has a dashboard that is unlike a car or an aircraft, it is it's own self, it has windows on the floor to assist on take off and landing, it has lights all around, but they are not aircraft-style lights, they are closer to police car lights (obviously being a police car), it's just that it incorporates lights on the bottom, it sounds like an aircraft when taking off but in the air, it has its own sound.
    Syd Mead did an incredible job designing the Spinner to his own taste, if you compare the Spinner to its closest relative: the DeLorean Time Machine (or SHIELD's Lola), both are still different yet similar as both are more car like than aircraft. Flying cars in Star Wars are closer to regular cars without wheels, or completely their own thing (Luke's landspeeder?) the Spinner is not on that league. New movies choose to go more like cars that magically float like in the "Fifth Element", but the Spinner remains as the definitive take on the word.
    For the record, I know there are repeated sequences on the video, it is on purpose (and from 2 different versions of the movie), and I know about the end of the video, that is a homage to Syd and his fantastic design. This is for educational purposes only: to learn on the lighting style, production design process and technology exploration on the Flying Car.

      It's amazing how well many of these 80s sci-fi movies have held up. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is another one, imo.

    To this day, Blade Runner is my all time favorite sci fi movie. I still remember watching it for the first time in 1986 on one of the new cable channels that aired it uncensored. I was a teenager at the time and I remember just being enthralled by the visuals. Truly a movie ahead of its time.

      I watched Blade Runner in 2016 and had the same immersive experience. Another one of my favorite movies from this era is the original Alien from 1979. These movies are classics for a reason.

      @@Edseltje Funny you should mention Alien. I watched that on VHS when I was eleven years old back in the 80s. To this day, it is my all time favorite horror movie. Ridley Scott's movies have probably had the biggest impact on me relative to other directors. My favorite war movie is Black Hawk Down. Also from Ridley Scott. That man is truly a genius.

      That is correct @sparrowJLT, I seem to recall it was Syd Mead or Ridley Scott himself that made that comment, and as with every new technology, the early adopters are usually people that can afford to make those investments, enough to fund and absorb the fixed costs that enable the transition to mass market; so Spinners as a mass market item could eventually become a reality if we ever get a BR 2049 sequel.

    • @BruceKenobi
      @BruceKenobi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi @@Lsvy97 Helicopters have many mechanical hurdles that prevent them to crossing to the emerging Urban Air Traffic Mobility market, with the latter seemingly reaching a boiling point in the next five years, with over 200 companies researching and investing in it, something will definitely come out of it. The original Spinner was based on a real life idea called an Aerodyne (Google: Dornier Aerodyne) where a jet engine (albeit small) could be placed behind the cockpit to enable the car VTOL capabilities.

    • @BruceKenobi
      @BruceKenobi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi @The Fandom Menace ! thank you for taking the time to comment! correct! as I mentioned aboved, Syd (RIP) based the spinner concept on an aerodyne, where the intakes where just behind the overhead colored lights, some artwork puts them on top of the vehicle, now I dunno about three engines, but if it where to be implemented based on the aerodyne, you could go with jet + electric and could maybe make it work, depending on weight. If you can share this, it would be awesome!

    I saw this movie at the cinema with a friend from college. when we went in, it was light. when we came out, it was getting dark, raining quite heavliy, and crowds of people were hustling along with umbrellas at an angle to the rain, multi coloured lights reflecting of the pavement/road. the movie was so immersive, it was like walking out og the movie into the movie because of the immersive effect of the film. it has always suck with me......i guess that moment will be lost in time...like...tears..in...the rain.
