Thank you for taking time to show us. I used this info to change out my 10 yr old thermostat out. I sure will have much more heat inside the interior I was freezing w the old one. This on my 99 ford Taurus eco eco boost
Thank you so much! We’ve had record lows this winter and it’s been unbearable. I am so looking forward to being able to not re scrape my windshield and the simple fact of having a working defrost is so awesome. 😂
I am going to be doing this Friday, weather permitting, as i do not have a garage to work in. Thanks a ton for this video, and for not "talking down" like some other how to videos do!!
Thanks for a great video. After watching several others yours made the most sense. I have a couple of questions. Do you disconnect the battery first? Do you use a waterproof sealant around the new gasket? Do you also change the thermostat sensor?
I might be doing your video "NO HEAT: Ford Taurus Rusty Coolant Flush Procedure" at the same time. Should I do that video first, then do this, and finish off with the final coolant fill?
great info sir would you happen to know what year engines will fit a 2002 taurus with the 3.0 12 valve i am going to have to swap mine out and my father inlaw has a 97 taurus with the 3.0 12 valve
.Hi the thermostat in my 99 Ford Taurus was being replaced but a couple months prior the cooling system was flushed and a new reservoir was installed. Again a couple months later I was told I needed a new thermostat so I agree to it they charged me 1.55 hrs. labor to remove and install. ($188 + $25 in parts) under the above mentioned circumstances the cooling system already being clean and flushed isn't 1.55 hours for an EXPERIENCED MECHANIC SEEM EXCESSIVE?! I mentioned it and was told that I had a dual overhead cam system. I can see the thermostat housing when I lift the hood and look at the engine, looks totally accessible to me!? Thank you so much for your opinion and your great videos! LH
So I have a 1998 Ford Taurus and I knew it had overheating issues when I purchased it. The water pump, thermostat, heater core had been replaced. . Pretty sure at least the heater core was second hand and the person who did the work is a half assed mechanic, i know hes my brother in law. I had it flushed and the coolant tank changed out including the hoses so the only thing in the cooling system that hasnt been changed is the radiator. I burped the system myself the other day and it really did help but the vehicle still gets hot when it is run on the freeway over 65mph for more than 15 minutes and I also still do not have heat. Im not entirely sure what needs to be done, to make matters worse when i got it back from the mechanic the check engine light was on. Insult to injury he also took off the under protection, didn't tell me, but when asked about it he said it was dragging and against the tires which was BS because I was under the car the day before and I had it bolted perfectly back in place, took me 45 minutes of agony only for him to rip it out without telling me. Do you have any suggestions about the overheating issue and the lack of heat, its already below freezing where I live.
+Brandi S I have never replaced a radiator for an overheating issue, if it has overheated this many times it is time for a head gasket test- www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NPDL76/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000NPDL76&linkCode=as2&tag=fordt-20&linkId=ZKD4OBYIGWYOO57W What is the temp it is overheating to? Was the thermostat installed the correct way as shown in my video?
+FordTechMakuloco. . . im choosing to replace the radiator because someone before my brother in law put a lot of stop leak in it and its been in there for a while, since it is part of the cooling system and someone os willing to do the work for free i would replace it. I dont know if the thermastat was installed correctly, like i said my brother in law is a half assed mechanic. other than overheating it has no other signs of a cracked head and the mechanics that ive talked to with NO monetary benefit swaying the decision have said they dont think its the head. after i burped the system of air it got alot better. Its just a weird situation, i takes a while to warm up and it doesnt get hot going 55mph but when you go over 3000rpm for more than 15 minutes it begins to overheat, just not like before i removed some air from the system. The temperature comes down a little when i turn on the heater but still no heat and the fluid goes down when i do it as well so it does look like the fluid is going though the heater core. Its got me quite frusyrated, my brother in law wont talk to me about the car without yelling and reminding me i knew about the problems like thats going to help, hes hopeless.
+FordTechMakuloco I have a leak when I install the thermostat. I did it 2 times and still. Is there a sealant I can use? I am afraid I will tighten it to much and it will give up and break.
What size are the bolts?? We were fixing it and one of my boyfriend's broke the bolt we've been looking for them everywhere but we have no clue what size it is
Doing a heater core change and all hoses. My bottom bolt head broke off on the thermostat housing and the rest of the bolt seems to be welded into the intake, Ive sprayed WD-40 and it still wont come out. It still has most of the bolt left. What are the chance that the time two bolts and gasket sealer will hold?? I'm a DIY'er and the engineering on this car has almost caused me to pull my hair out. Ford sure knows how to make life hard.
I had that happen with 2 of the screws. I removed the intake plenum and welded nuts onto the bolts, got them hot with a torch and removed them, then used anti-seize
I have a 2007 Taurus...it is not running hot but I have no heat. Do you believe it is the thermostat ? Didn't know if there was any kind of a sensor or not.
I have a 01 ford Taurus it has thermostat leak so I went bought a new gasket(paper) put it on just like you did still leaked. so I went back to the parts store bought new thermostat and gasket still leaks. Any idea what's going on? Should I try a gasket maker? Or is something wrong with the housing unit?
Great video. I have a 99 ford Taurus and I had only put water in the engine. There is a small leak and I have to keep putting water in once a week. I have a big problem now that the temp here has went into the single digit degrees. Now all that water has frozen solid over night. My father thinks the engine is totaled but I have to wait until it thaws out completely. What do you think I should look for once it has thawed out.
Amazon says the Thermostat posted above(Stant 45359 SuperStat Thermostat - 195 Degrees Fahrenheit) doesn't fit my 1999 Ford Taurus LX 3.0 V6 12V engine. Could you please confirm?
I accidently busted the gasket after tightening it too much after i put a new one in today. And had to get new clamps because the hose was too inflated to put the old one on. Doing a second round, not gonna tighenten the thermostat in too tight this time. Radiator is flushed... Hopefully this works or im buying a new car. Im not paying 1000 for labor.. When the part is like 10 bucks. Thanks for the vid very helpful.
I just changed the radiator on my Vulcan..heat isn't the same as before. I think t-stat is stuck closed. It seems like the temp needle just gets a 1/4 of the way up instead of halfway.
I also accidently drilled a small hole in my engine block just below the thermostat housing do you know what I can use the fill the hole with...it's on my 2001 ford taurus 3.0 OHV engine.I think the engine block is aluminum or metal not sure?
I doubt that you will see this but do I refill the radiator first then the reserve or let it all flow in through the reserve? Sorry if it’s a stupid question, first time doing this my self.
On an engine like this with a degas bottle you fill and burp all through the degas bottle. If you have a regular reservoir and a radiator cap directly on the radiator then you fill and bleed at the radiator.
You have removed all the electrical that hides the therm on our 99 Vulcan...can we just unbolt all the electrical that is in front of it. Also, we replaced the heater core per your video...all done and put back together but the blower now only runs on high and the blend door motor isn't running.....both were fine before we unplugged. We have not finished the flush yet but the therm is our last step before refilling and running....does the computer have to reset after disconnecting the battery? Does it control the blower and blend door activator?
FordTechMakuloco You did a very good job on preparing the mounting surface. 1> What tool did you use for the cleaning? Scotch? 2> Should we put the bleeding valve toward the top? 3> I don't see you use any sealant on the paper gasket. Is that correct? Thank you
I used a scotch brite pad for final cleaning after scraping off the baked on paper gasket. I brought the neck of the thermostat to the wire wheel on the bench grinder to clean that. As stated in the video the bleed valve is indexed in the housing, if you need to watch it again I go over this and it is very important so the t-stat sits flush. No sealant is required on the ford gaskets at all.
Question, what happens if the index or whatever, isn't in the oblong area? I have it in the correct direction and my check engine light is off so the problem seems to be fixed, but I don't know about that that last part. It looks as though the thermostat comes closed and you have to open it.
If it is not indexed right it does not sit flush in the housing therefore it will not block the water flow properly and there will always be a bypass of water. So the worst thing shy of an external leak is longer engine warm up times.
Do you have to do a complete flush? I just need to change the thermostat so the heat can get going again. The car is fall apart and we are getting a new one in a couple months when I am back at work and we just want to get the heater going again. I just recently had the coolent system and heater core flushed and I think the thermostat just went out from left over gunk
I replaced my thermostat twice in last 6 months & Ive broken a bolt each time. I drilled out the part that was stuck inside housing/manifold & just put another bolt in or you can tap it & put a larger bolt in. These cars & their cooling systems are a major engineering~design flaw. Fuck Ford, never again for me.

I did the exact thing on a Ford Taurus. I follow your steps. And after ubwas done adding coolant I just let it idle for a while let the hoses warm up drove the whole time. FordTechMakuloco I installed the new one , but it leaks , screwed one of the bolts too tight so when I went to go undo it to correct the leak one of the bolts broke off, please help

What if u don't drain the coolant
Just a bigger mess is all
FordTechMakuloco I installed the new one , but it leaks , screwed one of the bolts too tight so when I went to go undo it to correct the leak one of the bolts broke off, please help
Kevin Wells Oh man not good time to drill it out and start over you just need to snug them is all using a 1/4 ratchet is best to limit your torque.
thank you.

This video would be good if you were more detailed
Gostei top
If you could ZOOM OUT and show WHERE these things are in the car we could follow you better.
Sometimes you are looking at a part - NO IDEA WHERE THAT IS.
Thank you You're awesome!!!
I agree and have done so on my newer video. My whole thing is detail not watching me from afar and also there was quite a few times I panned over to the thermostat area from other parts of the car etc and the trans bell housing is right underneath it too.
“The thermostat is indexed.” Why? WHY? F-ing engineers!
You don’t have to pull off the hose.. 😂
Always, so when we reinstall the water neck, we can seal it properly.
Either way, like bro it works either way
How do u clean out the rust!? My heater core is danaged(not broken) and rusted my fluid.....
What year? I have a 99 Sable 24v dohc I hope it isn't under the car
Hi, my ford taurus seems to be heating up but not overheating. Is it the thermostat or something else.
What year is the car??
