My daughter bought a 99 escort for $1500 and she loves it even though I don’t feel it’s the safest thing for her to have it brings memories of when I was a kid going to school with my mother. I posted this on Mother’s Day 2023.
My parents got one in 1997 and gave it to me in 1999 to go University. By 2001 I had a slight collision (somebody hit me and ripped off the front bumper). It was fixed within a week, but somehow the transmission got damaged and the nightmare began! After multiple attempts, it was never fixed right! I loved that car and it was pretty good until that point!
I've owned my Mercury Tracer wagon, new, since 1997. Mercury's had a more aggressive front grill, that caught my attention. Make a lot of bolt-on mods, did some autocross, camping trips and lots of daily abuse. After 23 yrs, I've decided to keep it, and setup the mods to stage 3 components. The car has always ran perfect, gets 30mpg, has decent HorsePower, and still looks pretty sexy for a late 90's model vehicle. 97' thru 2000 , Cosworth Racing took over the engine builds,, and Mazda took over the design team. (ZX2 and Probe also) These were basically the prototype and development years for the Focus.
My grandmother had a Ford Escort LX like the silver model shown here, but it was the slightly cheaper version that lacked the CD and cassette players. Regarding the panic button, the only thing I think people find useful about it is to locate their car in a huge crowded parking lot. Is anyone else getting a "Jack and Diane" vibe from the background music?
Mm-hm. Personally I love this generation of the Ford Escort sedan and wagon (and by extension the Ford Escort ZX2 coupe and its tuner stablemate the Escort ZX2 SR) because they weren't shy about utilizing curvaceous exterior styling that was quite prevalent on vehicles in the mid to late 90's.
I always liked this generation Escort. Unfortunately, the infamous SPI2000 and its tendency to drop valve seats put almost all of them off the road prematurely. Come to think of it, I can’t remember the last time I actually saw a Ford Escort.
Drive DB7 that’s because this was the last Escort before the Ford Focus came along put these off the road permanently. I occasionally still see these and the Escorts before this on the road in my hometown area. It’s its Mercury Tracer sibling I see much less of though.

The key fobe she explained you have to press the doors button twice to open all doors, and while being inside there's the lock door button to press down on to lock all doors I believe
I miss my red 97 Ford Escort LX… my first car. But then I drove it through a snowstorm on 94 through Chicago and yikes, it’s not a good midwestern car. 😩
Great beginner car though. It was cheap, lasted a while, and when I inevitably wrecked it as a shitty teen driver well… I bought and knew to take better care of my cars after.
I just bought a 1998 Escort SE Sport for $550 with 86k on it. Needed the Relay Module under the air intake replaced to get it running. They changed the fuel shutoff for the 1998 to under the fuse panel on the driver kick panel. Probably because of punks like me as a kid. My buddy had a 1988 Escort that had the fuel shutoff in the driver rear. We would open the LR door while driving and slam it shut to trip the switch and stall the car out, irking him something fierce every time. Lol...those were good times!

I like how they went out of their way to mention the driver's cup holder can accommodate a juice box.
It helps if you have young children and bring a juice box with you so they can have something to drink while on a road trip.
