My 89 Mercury is 30 years old it looks like it's been sitting in a swamp for 30 years but man it's one of the most comfortable cars I've ever driven in
Love this generation of the Ford. I had an 88 model in my youth. Lots of problems with power steering and alternator. But, power train always reliable.
This is a great looking car for a 1989. I myself have both a 2002 and 1988 Ford Taurus. They both run great! They knew what they were doing when they manufactured this model of Ford! Nice video and documentary.
I love the colour in this one. Awesome car. No wonder it was such a success from the start. Ford should be proud of themselves for creating such an admirable vehicle.
When the Taurus came out in 1986, it was revolutionary for an American car. Even though the overall look unabashedly emulated the Audi 5000 that had come out not long before, the Taurus had something of its own and was way ahead of similar GM offerings. Mechanically, the car proved less than stellar, with crude engines and temperamental transmissions, but it was nonetheless a very good work horse. Many design features were clever, practical and even aesthetically pleasing. Overall, it was a tremendous achievement for Ford at the time.
@@ironinquisitor3656 That V6 was as old-school as the Taurus was futuristic. It had an iron block, iron CYLINDER HEADS, and pushrods. 🙄 It took 3 liters of displacement to push 140 horsepower... and it was not quick. It was crude.
When the Taurus/Sable was introduced to the American market in 1986, they were a bit of a shock! Not a square edge in sight, these cars were round and ahead of their time in terms of styling. Their big downfall was their transmissions which often did not see 100K miles. They also had a host of other maladies, like electrical issues and rust, but generally these cars sold very well because of the way they looked inside and out. In 1989, the GM A-bodies sedans and wagons - the Chevy Celebrity, Buick Century, Pontiac 6000 and Olds Ciera - were all going on seven years old, ancient in this industry. Despite numerous updates, they looked old and out of date compared to the Taurus, itself only a year or two off from a major redesign.
I need to save 9:08. One of my "someday" model-car projects is to build a model of the Taurus wagon from the AMT sedan kit, and I hadn't been able to find a good reference picture of the roof and roof rack anywhere.
@91Taurus well, I sure have lots to choose from ...gonna have to do that someday soon. I have maxima, pathfinder, 300z, sentra ... on and on ... the maxima and sentra ones are especially soothing. I love the outdoor scenes where it looks las if they filmed in a nice park, in August - with the leaves swaying on the trees, must think I'm nuts lol - but I live for that stuff ...
That might sound weird to some people but I remember my mother bringing home a brand new 89 LX. I spent my entire childhood in that car. Would feel incredible to sit in it again.
Thanks for posting, waiting for an 1989 Dealer Video. I have an '89 GL, tons of crap to fix, but its worth it. Similar to the sedan in this video, only color is a bit lighter, and clear coat is coming off.
Ford screwed up when they redesigned it in 1996... they should've stuck with the original classic appearance. I LOVE the interior design of the Taurus/Mercury Sable from 1986-1990.
@MrGoldenwaffler lol, not at all I'm the exact same way. I think there is nothing quite as relaxing as sitting down after a shitty day and watching a video on some of these great cars when they were still brand new, and yet to be abused and neglected. I would definitely love to see your Nissan videos, and hope you upload some if you find the time. It would likely make my day
I have owned several Tauruses over the years and I own a 2018 right now. It is one of the better Fords ever made. Funny she mentions the Buick Century. I owned one of those too and it was the biggest piece of junk I ever owned.

I thought that the Buick Century along with its siblings if they had the 2.8 V-6 they all came with MPI when GM moved from the older carb version in 1986.I didn't know there was a 2.8 CFI or TBI engine in those cars.
Innovative and tasteful. Classy, clean styling bests today's cluttered, overstyled and overdone cars of today. The lack of tack on tinsel and gigunda wheels refreshing. 😊
35 seconds in and the transmission has probably broken again. Was the experience I had with my 1988 Taurus, anyway. I was hoping there was a cool purpose for the compartment behind the rear seats, but, no...it's just a storage unit. It seemed kind of weird, but I still used it. Apparently correctly!
@@ironinquisitor3656 Unfortunately the car already had 120,000 miles on it when I got it, so it was possibly mistreated. The transmission never ended up working well even after being fixed. It would have potentially been nice otherwise.
@@dillchives That's too bad. The transmissions were really supposed to be serviced every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Most people who owned these never bothered to before 100,000 miles so they ended up having major problems.
@@ironinquisitor3656 Yeah, it's disappointing because that was my first car, too! I just didn't have enough money to keep up with it while relying on the hope that it would continue to work well. I still have fond memories of it, though, which is why I still watch videos like this. 🙂
Had 2 tauruses, 93 3.0 Vulcan. Which had a super weak transmission that slipped crazy between 1-2, And the engine pinged like hell on 87 octane for no reason. And a 99 SHO which was a great car until 125k which it fell into pieces overnight and suffered major mechanical failures. Not the cams either. But the price I paid I cant complain.

What we have here is a dealer information presentation. The idea is to provide the dealer the information to sell the automobile. The automobile the dealer will be selling is the Ford automobile. The more Ford automobiles the dealer sells the more money he and the motor company will make. The Ford automobile is named after Mr. Henry Ford of Detroit, Michigan who pioneered the assembly line method of automobile manufacturing.
All the auto manufacturers bragged about the new futuristic rocker panels and plastic trim. Until everyone realized it fades, turns grey, gets brittle and looks like $hit after about 5 or 6 years.
Little did they realize those plastic rocker panel covers would do more harm than good. I owned a 94 Explorer which had the plastic rockers over top of the metal rockers. I removed them and sure enough there was sand and some salt caked on the plastic and inside the drilled out holes where the clips go in. I took a rubber mallet and tapped the bottom and sides of the rockers and had loads of rust and dirt fell out.... I still don't understand why automakers continue to use this horrible design.

The Taurus was pretty special when it came out, but it's embarrassing how Ford let it die such a slowwwwwww painful death.

Does it come with the undercoat there don't you know?
