  • Keith Brymer Jones talks about his epiphany with clay and the cognitive experience associated with making which has helped him in other areas of his life. He talks about how the act of making is the “purest and most honest form of communication” and is crucial for young people in helping to open minds and spark imaginations. Keith is a potter and TV presenter.
Discovering clay was like an epiphany, an instant connection with this natural material that humankind has been using for thousands of years.
I’ve been making for over 40 years. Sitting at my wheel and throwing pots. I would go as far as to say my brain has been trained to literally think the moment I sit down to make - in my case, throw.
The cognitive experience has not only enabled me to know the material well, but it has also shown me how to overcome problems within the making process. This ‘grown development’ has then transcended into many other areas of my life.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. So beautiful. Keith is such a treasure. There's not much that is treated as sacred, whose sanctity is recognized. We need these reminders.

Making anything at all is truly magical. Someone once told me about an experiment where the scientists looked at the brain waves of someone creating music and compared it to the waves of those who listened to, and enjoyed the music. That of the person making it showed a way higher level of dopamine release, ecstasy and all that fancy stuff.
This man is lucky to experience it. I hope this episode gets more views so people can understand this basic principle. Good stuff.

Lovely. I agree. We all need to make time to make. Whatever material we choose to work with, making is important.
