You should have made the name of your title "15 Electric Cars Customers Can't Get". A friend of mine waited almost a year for her ID4, then she canceled and switched to the the Ionic 5 and has been waiting more than 6 months so far. The dealer said if she wants it, she has to take whatever color and package she can get, or they will pass her over for the next customer.

I have an Audi etron for 27 months. Great ownership experience and I leased the vehicle on a whim and now I’m a convert for all electrics. The range is around 250 miles and that’s more than enough. I just charge it up when I get home. The total lack of required service is awesome that is often over looked. Evs are quick for everyday driving.
Don’t need autonomous driving. I don’t need my family transport to accelerate quicker to 60 mph in less than 5.1 seconds. This is a great vehicle and we all have great choices. I’m a ev convert and I owe it all to Alex. He cracks me up.

People need to stop with ¨the top whatever ranking ¨thing. When purchasing anything, there is no top or best for everybody. There is what is best for you. So you need create a list of your priorities (that probably looks different for everyone), and find the best option for you.
In my case was a model Y LR 7 seater. My priorities were 1 - compact suv. 2 - could seat up to 7 for short distances, if needed. 3 - Easy for the wife to deal with. 4 - Minimum maintenance. 5 - good value.
So the only priority that I could not fulfill with the model Y was good value. It is far from a good value (at 56K with options). But it is really easy to use, do not need to go to the gas station (my wife was robbed at gunpoint at a gas station), does not require regular maintenance (so I don´t need to take time off to go change oil and filter, for the wife´s car). Range was not such a big deal, because it is used mostly around town. Rarely do we need to use more than 200 miles in 1 day. Never used a supercharger. 100% home charged.
I still have an ICE vehicle, and I am not sure the country as a whole is ready to go full electric. But so far we are enjoying the ev experience.

It's worth considering that the claimed "18 minute" charging time with Hyundai and Kia vehicles come with a few caveats, like _if_ you can find a location that supports 350 kW charging, and _if_ there's a stall available (which is only worsened by the fact that third party networks often only have two 350 kW stalls), and _if_ it's working and supplying full power (broken or throttled stalls are all too common with third party networks), and _if_ there's no errors in the communication between the vehicle and charger, and _if_ the vehicle doesn't slow down charging because the battery is too cold, too hot, or just decide to end the session early due to some bug of unknown origin, then yes, you'll charge faster than you would in a Tesla. But remember, each minute spent moving to a different charger or battling with errors is charging time lost. It's easy for the claimed "18 minute" charge time to extend due to unforseen circumstances.

And Hyundai and Kia are currently being sued for overheating of their charge ports. It's easy to claim your product does this or that. Then there's reality.

thanks @directorjustin. It is learning from you and others while I was researching buying an electric car, that helped me decide that for my area, and my budget, it was best for the foreseeable future for me to stick with a hybrid. I do feel, though, that the day is coming when the electric vehicle and charger industries will work out the kinks and electric will reduce the need or desire for fossil fueled vehicles to almost nil, and help reduce global warming.

The issue still is that all of the EVs mentioned are only "better than Tesla" in one, maybe 2 categories, and then when it's 2 categories better the price is significantly higher than the next closest Tesla - Tesla for now still the benchmark for overall value.

    • @OweEyeSea

Yeah, you might as well put an electric train on the list since it can haul more people, an electric scooter on the list because it has a smaller turning radius, and an electric drone because it can fly. I'm glad the competition is increasing and improving. But a comparison based on the overall package and focusing on vehicles at least being somewhat available in numbers would be more worthwhile.

Comparing electric cars is tricky. Car A charges 20-80% in 20 minutes. Car B does the same in 30 minutes, so it's worse than Car A. Oh but wait, car B has a bigger battery. Not Apples to Apples. I don't think I heard anything about efficiency in this comparison. How many miles does each car go for each minute of charging? And so on . . .

    range
    charging time
Supercharging network (convenience, location, speed, reliability)
seamless OTA update improvements and bug fixes
    performance
    space and capacity
    no-dealer hassle
    efficiency
    acceleration
    safety
Basically a balanced capability not lacking in any aspect. Which is why Tesla is king today.

Curiosity question. If I need to drive my ev farther than it’s range and it tells me how far and where to charge, will it tell me if the charge station is open for me to use? Will I have to wait longer than the allotted time to charge because other people are charging their ev? I can schedule and budget my time for charging batteries but if others are waiting in line ahead of me how can I adjust for second in line vs eighth? It won’t matter how long it takes to charge my ev but how I fall in the line.

I think a lot of BEVs can do 1 thing better than Tesla, but none can do everything as good as Tesla does. It's the full package. It's getting closer but just not there yet. I am looking forward to more options with a reliable charging network. I am still hopeful for the upcoming electric Dodge Charger. I do take issue when saying that the Hyundai/Kias charge that fast, they never do because their thermal management is so bad and the 350kw chargers never work. Other makers have a much more consistent experience than the Hyundai/Kia vehicles.

Overall, after owning a plug-in hybrid and two other EVs, I finally settled on a model Y, because it had the most positive traits, and fewer negative traits than other vehicles Also, the $10k price drop was a definite incentive :-)

There is no "losing it" happening ...of course there are individual categories where cars offer better features or functions than Tesla, the issue still is that all of the EVs mentioned are only "better than Tesla" in one, maybe 2 categories, and when it's 2 categories better then price is significantly higher than the next closest Tesla - Tesla for now still the benchmark for overall value. That is why Tesla will be the best selling EV in the world for a while to come - the competition is not quite there yet as a complete package.

Kindly also open the hood and check the octo valve heat pump which is leap ahead of the superbottle which was itself a big leap from standard. Now check if autopilot and fsd were available in 2012. Instead of using an anecdotal example, their tests are done at their testing facility as well as on a 50 mile loop on public roads. They objectively test 40 different parameters. They do not accept advertising or donations from corporations and don't have a bone to pick with or favorable bias toward any manufacturer. The reason behind this was the overwhelming negative feedback on Consumer Reports' website regarding their product choices. Many contractors and users expressed their dissatisfaction, stating things like, "Why would you (CR) endorse that product? It's terrible." The abundance of such comments led me to believe that Consumer Reports often doesn't thoroughly live with the products they test, as assessing a product through just a 50-mile drive doesn't provide a comprehensive understanding. Additionally, it's worth considering the backgrounds of some employees at Consumer Reports and where they have previously worked.
