Crazy how under-recognised she was. She really has always been one of the most capable, brilliant, even versatile, singers. Someone wasn't paying attention.
I never heard this song before until I played GTA: Vice City Stories. I usually don't like songs like this, but Elkie makes it so good you gotta love it!
I first heard Elkie Brooks during a series of "Sight & Sound" concerts that were simultaneous BBC TV and FM radio broadcasts in the UK in the late 1970's. I was fortunate enough to have my cheapo mono cassette recorder hooked up to our stereo at the time and managed to record the concert which I played for many years until the cassette got chewed up but now I have her stuff on iTunes and the sound quality is a lot better. Loved her slightly raspy voice - added character to the songs she sang.
Beautiful. Just discovered her. My loss as she is wonderful. I love the way she transitions briefly from soft and sentimental into belting out a sort of black inspired soul music. Had I listened to only that portion, I would think she was Dionne Warwick or a slightly more subtle Aretha, before returning to her original norm voice. This singer -with great back up vocals and the awesome Band backing her - makes this a musical masterpiece cover and a rare improvement on the admittedly fine Chris Rea original. Thank you to all the above artists who contributed to this rendition.
god i came to love 💖 this lady through my former sister-in-law RIP saw her at many concerts in Liverpool in the early years loved her wat a brilliant artist bernie m 22/03/19
Rea lover for years. But anyone who can take someone else's original and perform it appreciably as well -- or better -- deserves a standing ovation. Thanks Elkie Brooks.
John Haynes Agreed also! Seen Elkie many times, great singer and interpreter of song. Should've been a bigger star but it's not all about talent unfortunately.
Nor Adele! I liked 'First Love' from '19', but she doesn't come anywhere near Elkie in terms of sheer class. As much as I admire Chris Rea, this cover of his debut hit is arguably the definitive version of the song.
No need to be flaunting your body , no tramp stamps! No multiple piercings, no disgusting lyrics. The one and only demure gorgeous elkie. Today’s women need to look and learn
This is a great arrangement of Rea's song. Elkie's voice is good for this song, just the way Rea's is good for his songs. But I love Rea's version better, maybe because it was the first one I heard and it strikes a certain cord in my life at the time. I enjoy listening to both Elkie's and Rea's, but always listen to Rea's more.

Great singer and a wonderful lady too.
Huh..of course she was recognised. I knew her name and music as a kid u.k.

@SomethngBoutMary The original is different. Elkie Brooks in concert is something else. Amazing !!!She is a real ballsy singer.
Nor Adele! I liked 'First Love' from '19', but she doesn't come anywhere near Elkie in terms of sheer class. As much as I admire Chris Rea, this cover of his debut hit is arguably the definitive version of the song.
What a voice and excellent version of Chris reas work
Belíssima canção!

And your auntie looks great.
Your Auntie is without a doubt the best British female artist of all time.
Wow! Can you sing like her? If you can please share it! So many bad female artists sounding the same these days.
No need to be flaunting your body , no tramp stamps! No multiple piercings, no disgusting lyrics. The one and only demure gorgeous elkie. Today’s women need to look and learn
