Songs like this take me back to Sunday afternoons in the late 70s early 80s. My dad bought an expensive Hitachi music center. He was such a Luddite he barely touched it but we heard a few good songs.
This was taped on the Tops Of The Pops program on the 11th of August 1982. To underline how good Elkie's cover version is/was , when she finished taping this performance, she was approached backstage by a fan, who Elkie soon intuited was in fact Chris Rea (who wrote and performed the original version in 1978 ) incognito, asking for her autograph.
She lip synced the performance, that is not an insult as ToTP was lip synced from the very first episode in the early 60s due to then the terrible acoustics of where it was first recorded, a deconsecrated church, and then time restraints. So what was heard was the album version so he did have the reason to do what you said as it was a great version.
