Biggest point for me with having a motorised slider is the fact I don't need to be holding the gimbal/camera. I can create some cool and interesting shots of my work as I'm doing it, and that's the biggest win for me.

Sam, thanks for this. An old acquaintance contacted me, brought one of these over. he had purchased it and then never even took it out of the box, and had moved on, and just GAVE it to me!
So I have a couple of upcoming jobs, just unpacked, found your video and have set it up. The referral for the support arms much appreciated, they will be here in two days, one day before the first shoot. This thing is so smooth, love it. Thanks again from a new subscriber.

Remember to weight down your tripod (and/or lighting support) legs if it is the least tippy. I use sandbags from a pair of wrist weight belts that are never used. Each bag is just 1 pound and three of them will weight down a tripod plenty. Cheap and easy solution.

Excellent review! Covers pretty much everything you'd need to know in a really engaging way. Love your honest, down to earth presentation style. I bought the Neewer 80cm slider a few months ago, but the wireless remote control system was so intermittent and unreliable that it was no real use on time pressured shoots where gear just has to work perfectly all of the time. Sent it back and based on this video I'll definitely be buying the GVM 80QD!!

I just ordered one of these. I am going to use it for one-person pieces to camera in my bedroom studio, as a second camera, initially, but I think almost any indie film should use a second camera on a motorized slider while shooting the main footage. Remember to also use a clapperboard to help you can sync sound with your auxiliary camera.
I think the key to using a budget motorized slider is to use a lightweight camera. I have a Canon HRF 800 camcorder that shoots 1080p and doesn't weigh much more than the battery that powers it, and it was about $250 new. I know that such a light camera will not strain the motor, cause excessive wear of the traction belt or cause excessive noise. I suspect many complaints about budget motorized sliders are from people who demand too much from a piece of kit that costs less than a telephoto lens.

Mint review, thanks. A previous review mentioned an issue with the belt causing a slight knock in the footage - caused by a kink in the belt itself where it sits against the motor pulleys during storage for a period of time. If that makes sense. He said he took it off and poured boiling water on it and let it sit for 15 minutes and the kink eased off and the knock didn't happen again. Thought i'd mention it for anyone who's bought or is going to buy the slider.

So, I hope I can just implement a micro to C type connector. But, this lead me to another question. How do you setup and use the cable in time lapse cable? The directions don’t explain the connections for time lapse. 🤷‍♂️

Hi. The one I use is in the description. Honestly for any slider you’ll need either a heavy tripod with a larger head and wide legs, OR use two tripods, one either side. You can get support arms now too.

Hey I just bought a Zeapon Axis 120 which is very noisy when it brakes ans accelerates again in another way. This GVM is very noisy too. So I can't use it for an interview. Do you know one motorized slider that is very slient? A one which can be used when guests are close during an interview. Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hi Cris! Yeh any two tripods or light stand with a 1/4” thread will be fine. No special clamps. I just used the manfrotto plate from the tripod and attached it underneath the slider. You have different thread options underneath the slider. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻🤩🎥

Hey! 🤩 I haven’t tested the battery properly from full to zero but I’ve used it so much and it’s lasted for a few days for hours at a time. Did you do or have to do any image stabilization in post production? Like warp stabilization in Adobe Premiere?
EDIT: Do you recommend the version with aluminum rails instead of carbon fiber? I've had experience using CF vs alum in other camera equipment like tripods, but not on a slider. Generally CF is lighter so less strenuous when carrying, but aluminum should provide a more stable movement?? Your thoughts?

  • @benchmarkcommercials

When you screw in the plate for the tripod is it supposed to screw in all the way where the plate no longer moves? I bought one and the screw (1/4 and 3/8) starts to screw in but then it stops where the plate isn't tight and moves around...
