So where did you waste 50 hours? I get that you paint competition pieces to make youtube videos but at least make those videos interesting then, and have something to say other than "I painted this, at first I was unsure but then I saw that it was good" as the conclusion to every video of yours on this project has been so far
Looks amazing jon, looking forward to seeing you finish this one, got your new signature series and god damn they are amazing and awesome paints/colours
On Trapped Under Plastic, he describes the dread once he realized how much fur texture there is on the model and how much of a pain it was to get to where he wanted it.
@@ObsessiveMuffin I mean, don't we all gripe/whinge about stuff we choose to do sometimes? I don't care about Jon playing the TH-cam game with clickbait titles and whatnot as long as the actual video content is good, which I feel like it almost always is
I really like how honest you are in the video when you describe trying out something. There’s really good advice in there to push yourself to try new things. As you said, if you expect to do advanced things at a proficient level right way, you’ll never reach that proficiency. As a new painter everything is a challenge and scary. It’s good to hear that even professionals get anxious about things and aren’t sure everything is going to work well.
Good video. Crap clickbait title and icon. After watching the video I don't even know what the "technique" is that you hadn't tried before at this level?
The titles make it really hard to find a particular guide or technique. ‘Product review X’ or ‘how I painted Y’ is much more informative than ‘IS THIS THE TECHNIQUE THAT WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING’
Is everything needs to be a guide ? He is simply documenting what he is doing and the process of working on a model he wants to present at the Golden Demon competition. Also, it is unfortunate but if he wants his content to be put forward by the TH-cam algorithm he needs to put clickbaity titles. It is his job, if he wants money on the table at the end of the month, he needs to play the TH-cam game. You can't really blame him for that, everybody needs to eat and pay the bills.
really feels like these competitions drain the fun out of painting, this is the third or so video I've seen pass by about "wasting" time. glad I'm just keeping this a hobby
@OliveTree2010 I'm with you on this. The problem is the TH-cam Algorithm, in combination with the interface. If I could categorize my subscriptions, then click a button to see 'recent hobby videos from my subscriptions' rather than getting videos recommended to me based on the last 3 things I watched completely arbitrarily across the platform, it would be much better, and probably would let our subscriptions work better as well.
People blaming the algorithm, but Jon just has a tendency to lean on really negative titles. Plenty of other successful youtubers dont do that and still do fine.
I love that you are sharing your journey in painting toward a GD, there is insight in these videos to which people should pay attention. I thank you for letting us take a peek into your hobby/ life/ process. I'm going to slay some grey now.
Great video! A lot of great little things to think about while painting cloth and just painting in general. You keep knocking these GD project videos out of the park, managing to tie in really interesting and informative stuff for viewers while also getting work done on your GD piece.
Looks awesome! Love the texture it really looks worn like a Skaven should. I always mix the GW washes with some lahmian medium instead of water to get a more matt finish.
"and ill be back next week with another click bait title and thumbnail" its a good thing i already watch all your videos by default or id skip so many due to this youtuber nonsense
I found that a good varnish is a 50:50 mix of ultra matte varnish and lahmiam medium. It keeps the saturation but also evens out some of the mixed finishes from glazes.
That looks amazing. Thank you for this fantastic cloth painting breakdown. I learned so much watching YOU breakdown, haha. No, but seriously, this project is coming along nicely. Your videos have inspired me to go full tilt for a painting competition later this year.
I think your paint job on the skirt looks fantastic. The highlighted sections serve not just to catch the light, but with the way you used those little dots and lines, they also look worn and thin. Love it!
I started using Milanote shortly after the first time you mentioned it in a video because I had been searching for a good solution to plan out and take notes for my mini painting. It has been awesome and I happily paid for the subscription. I am an Underworlds player and I own every warband, so it has been awesome for creating a board for each warband and when I have random ideas I can easily go to that board on my phone and add a quick note for later. I wasn’t fast enough with registration to get a seat in your Adepticon class, but I look forward to seeing your submission and hopefully meeting you. This is my first time attending. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go slay some gray…
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I personally always look forward to your large projects where you share your thought processes for when I tackle them myself. I’m excited to see this in person at Adepticon.
So where were the wasted 50hrs? I get you’re trying to feed the algorithm, probs due to YT suppressing artistic content, but not sure the click bait titles are needed…?
16:03 does anyone know where to buy those bronze corner pieces he has in the wet palette? Or what they're even called? I'd love some to help keep my paper down against the sponge
John, you are a great painter. Genuinely. But how you decide to title and thumbnail your videos, it's really getting off putting. You don't have to make everything clickbait-y. You are skilled and deserve credit. I want to support your efforts, but my goodness it's getting hard to want to click your videos half the time....
Love it, just wondering if the bottom part is too clean. It's clear that it's dragged over the ground, so I would suspect it to be more dirty vs the rest of it. But that just me, it's already great as it is ;-)
it's coming out amazing... the one question i keep asking myself every time i watch your videos, or miniacs' and others... how much video footage you guys must deal with... do you shoot in raw/log footage because that would be even more insane with the file sizes.... woof.
That cloak look amazing. Very well done. I know you did not ask for feed back so please ignore. Those little metal triangles would have distressed the areas around them cause increase wear. Right now they look like they are static elements not something that been incorporated.
I think it is important to show the actual work required for this level of competition. I have heard a million well painted models described through the decades as “could have won GD” None of those models had a tiny fraction of this level of talent and quality
It's twofold! One is that it helps weight down the paper so it doesn't curl up, the other is that copper has antimicrobial properties and helps stop the sponge from spoiling.
That's not time wasted, because you now have so much more knowledge to draw from. Your instincts were right - you were thinking not only about the different textures of this torn and patched garment, but how that would translate into the movement of the cloth and the play of light falling onto those textures, so there was a lot to consider. It looks good as a result of those considerations.
Hot take: Taking a break and stepping away every hour or so is generally a good habit you should have anyway just as a health thing, so that's another way this project is making you a better hobbyist :P
Fantastic work. @ninjon how did you paint the underside of the cloak? Did you do it in sub assembly or separate the piece? I'd be so nervous about touching the prior work on the skin and leg.
Looking really great - no waste of time I think 🙂I hope, that the concept of the base will work out... the stomping foot of the model needs attention and an idea. But I am not sure, that your currently base design will work... it looks a little bit strange with the earth-wave coming up and I don't know what is the "story" behind the base-idea?
Glazing to add variety to the patchwork cloth was the right choice. It made it look both uniform and varied. Not seeing wasted hours here, clickbait title not needed.
Oh man, when you said you wasted 50 hours I was like “welp, this will look like crap; going to have to unsubscribe”. But no, it looks awesome. I suppose I’ll stick around. 😜 It is looking sharp, excited to see the finished piece in person come March!
Surely, that is not cloth, its a garment made of human skin. I thought the whole time that that would be the fifty hour waste. Lovely painted ”cloth” though. Amazing looking.
You know what i noticed? If i skip like 3 or 5 minutes of the video somewhere in the middle Cloak didn't change at all Maybe it's just me, but i think you overdone wit small details on big stuff It's really hard to notice if you didn't watch the video carefully or if you didn't paint it personally. Good example of painting big stuff cool and fast is YOUR John Blanche video! Horse is done FAST and COOL! It's so bright and catchy at the front, and cold and not so busy at the other parts like legs or back. And still has some interesting colours and done REALLY FAST!
If everything is emphasized, nothing is emphasized.
I see what you did there, an incredible reference. One of the best lines in the movies that most people probably dont notice.

Incredible work, definitely not time wasted if you're getting something out of it (totally ignoring the sisyphean subject of Golden Demon obvs)

Hardware store. You can do the same with washers aswell
From Game Envy, they’re called palette shields. Help keep the mildew down since they are copper.
I like the photos at the end. Gives us a better idea what it looks like compared to just video.
So glad to see that even you get crap on the sponge of your wet palette. Mine looks like the aftermath of an explosion in a paint factory.
