Super Mario Bros. 3 is a very famous and popular game for the NES. There are normally two main ways to beat it: the quick way using warp whistles to skip worlds ( tasvideos.org/... ), and the longer way which goes through all the worlds ( tasvideos.org/... ).
Lord_Tom ( tasvideos.org/... ) goes the same route as the this game end glitch run ( tasvideos.org/... ). However, he achieves total control ( en.wikipedia.o... ) of the game, pushing the run to a whole new level. He gives himself new powers, like the speed booster and the suit-swap, to name a few. Read the author's comments for more details ( tasvideos.org/... ).

Just total genius here. From color a dinosaur to doing shinesparks to the MissingNo suit to glitching up the tanks to VVVVVV, all genius there. Laughed so hard as I watched all the glitches and tricks going on.
Man, SMB3 just got totally ruined after seeing all this.
This is what makes TAS's so entertaining.
You know, I've actually heard of a glitched power-up that turns Mario into a mass of sprites that swim through the air.

I saw the upload of the whole AGDQ block earlier today; and after two GDQ's with nothing more that stuck in my mind than "Playing around with Twitch chat", making me worried you had run out of GDQ surprises, I was blown away by this year's block!
Most of all this SMB3 run, which I'd say was the best of them, even when considering SMW and the first half of Brain Age. I'd go so much too far as to claim that this could be the most significant SMB3 TAS since Morimoto, although those feelings of being filled with awe and stunning surprises were of course bigger when I watched the run for the first time and with the audience reactions and expert commentary and such things.
But you can really feel great for all the work put into it. It was worth it, I'd say.
Laughed when the hacked part started. Also, very nice ending =DAnyway, I guess a hack like that in NES game takes a lot of work and optimizing. At least the super powers have to require some skill with 2 kB RAM memory and NES assembly. =D

My friend told me this run topped Pokémon Plays Twitch from last year's AGDQ. I didn't believe him. I was in fact very wrong.

It's a joke. Sorry.
The red koops' shell in 7-1 created all those codes, that's the reason for the ACE to work, the koops shells' X positions are written as a valid assembly code/instuction for the game to load the princess's chamber, kinda like C++ language.
This run uses that strat to do all those crazy and weird stuff.

The tas doesn't work on emulator. It's de-synced. It's not "add a couple frames to the start". It's "delay the inputs in 10,000 spots".

Call it a pipe-dream, and pardon the pun, but like; Masterjun has proven that modding SNES games via arbitrary coding inputs is possible; My big question is wondering how many years it'll take for this to be recreated in the All-Stars port.
I doubt it won't take that long for something like this to be found in the All-Stars version. I mean, they basically took the entirety of SMB3, changed the graphics, and put it in All-Stars. the CPUs between the NES and SNES have similar instruction sets, because both of them are Ricoh 5A series CPUs, only difference is that the NES has the 5A23, and the SNES has the 5A22. Thus, they didn't have to change much to bring SMB3 to the new console. So, I'm surprised that a ACE glitch hasn't been found yet. Then again, the Wrong Warp is the only ACE glitch in SMB3, as I recall, and it's fixed in the All-Stars port, just before you get to the note block, the pipe brings you back up again.

They glitched the game into running code from enemy positions and then jumped to controller input, then wrote code that allowed that crazyness. You can even use some of that stuff in realtime!
@@computercat8694 with a TAS creator, like FCEUX, you can make a TAS or play the game normaly (IF YOU HAVE A ROM OF THE GAME!)

Ben Plus! The 7-1 exploit is really just an exploit to execute arbitrary code. The code in the usual wrong warp simply jumps to the credits subroutine. The code set up in this video transfers control of the code being run to the button inputs, and doing many of these frame-perfectly allow for...well, this.

I would have thought this was fake a week ago but ive seen someone write a program to install flappy bird in SMW and install a hex editor by writing cod3e with koopa shells so now i dont know what to believe.
Im not crying fake but ill always have a hint of doubt until i see something like this performed live. I know in technical terms its possible on these old games but idk

No, it's actually real, reprogrammed in-game by forcing it to read the RAM (temporary memory) instead of the ROM (permanent memory the game usually reads). As far as I know, you could do this on a real console if you were able to get the inputs the exact same.

in very simple terms:
That glitch at 7-1, when entering the pipe the wrong way, makes the game do weird stuff. It is possible to manipulate the things in there to make specific weird stuff. Usually, speedrunners use it to warp straight to the end of the game. Here instead, the runner manipulated stuff to make the game read code from the controller. From there, the runner basically reprogrammed the game on the go, to do potentially unlimited werid stuff.
