Super interesting Ian, not easy to explain how to read a waves because everything is going so fast in the water, but with these different exemple it was great!
Great info thanks, appreciated the freeze frame explanations. Id definitely watch more of this theme of vid, every beach is different the more you know the better
This is brilliant well done mate! Real practical video for everyone to study. Often riders are only as good as the waves they ride, so it's worth the effort to hit up the best break for bodyboarding in their area.
This is great. I’m just starting out but to see all the things you’ve been talking about from our pov from when we’re out there is very helpful. I can’t wait to get back out
Been in the water all my life, I think growing up at beachbreaks has been a blessing in disguise because even at reef bottoms I can find the little corners or seek out patterns based on the conditions that the locals who only go to this reef may not spot as quickly. I use my knowledge and patience a lot when its crowded and it always feels rewarding when I'm in the spot alone or just have a better priority than those around me. Keep teaching and as said, reading waves comes with time, study your breaks even if you dont paddle out as much as you can and your sessions will benefit! -Eugene, San Diego.
Great explanation! I saw the video on this weekend and was able to put it to practice today and it was mind blowing. I was more focused when riding, instead of waiting for the wave to do something.
The amount of times I'm in a "mates comp" with my mates and I am dead set on bettering a trick one of my mates just did, only to drop in and completely change my mind within about .2 seconds flat and stuck that trick anyway! So like you said, it's experience and the only way you get experience is to get out as much as you can and smash some waves!(:
Can you please do some video like "best warm ups before bodyboarding" or "the warm ups I do before bodyboarding" just something like that because I don't know what I should do before bodyboarding and probably some people here don't know as well. Great video btw
Firstly let me say, your videos are totally on point. I have missed bodyboarding for 7 years.... and last week I came back. Your videos are helping accelerate what I kind of knew on instinct.. but never really had to break it down PERFECTLY!!!.
Men, I don’t have words to said BIG thanks you. This is very helpful video about the sections of the waves like you did. Really really thanks keep pushing men.
Thanks for this video, first Time i understand that 👏👏 Very well explained 👏👏 I have Seen your runs from Arica and iquique, you are a very great bodyboarder 💪 Good vibes from France
Best video so far dude I would like to see more of you explaning waves, something like wave analysis, while you tell us what are you thinking at that moment
And it's kinda weird cause I ride at a professional level (apart from DK and you know why) haha but soon as I get regular lid vids I have to watch them to mind surf my night away!(: And as usual it's 12:09 am so it's a great vid to get into bed to set my dreams of waves free(: onya mate!
@@iaincampbell_ mate, I am goofy on stand up right. I prefer left's as I spin left and inverts are more comfortable, but flips and rolls are better on rights.. tips on how I can improve that? Like I rev air and spin on rights, but forward air and spin on left's flawlessly but I'm not the greatest on forwards on rights and revs on left's:/ haha
It’s very hard to recognise the right ones, looks like the journey to learn bodyboarding is very long (and awesome) . Thank you for sharing this precious infos! 🤙
Really good and interesting video, especially with this reverse sections I always had trouble with 😅 will try that today. Love from western Australia !
Please could you consider doing a small waves primer. Some folks have limited opportunities at whatever beach is closest. Thank you for all your posts!
Hey Ian i don’t know if you’ve gone over this topic but can you talk about how to paddle for a wave , I always see different spongers paddling in different ways which makes me confuse whether there’s a certain technique that works better over the other, I just started sponging like 3 months ago and getting a bit more better but still need to improve my technique and style, paddling for the wave seems to be what I’m struggling with rn , thanks bro
Any advice for someone's who's learning to boogie board, but there are no schools or anything around? I just try and go out when the water is not too wild at the moment. Living on the Dutch coast
I’m really not too sure what the conditions are. Look for off shore winds and some wave action. Also can maybe look at going to Portugal. I know PLC has started a bodyboard camp there.
Wow yeah, your looking way down the line, I normally focus on what's being created as I'm going down the line, it's nice that your telling us that you mess up too, vids normally either show pros perfect surfing or wipeouts, no in-between, I'll watch this a few times more🤙🏻
Were those first 2 clips from Caves (really past it), Kogel Baai? I havent boarded there in over 30 years. Your videos want me to get back into it as a fat ol' 48 year old. PS: Board availability sucks in South Africa nowadays... Like 3 brands to choose from. :*( Edit: You said "Caves again", guess I was right :D
Yes it probably was caves. There is a lot of footage from there on this channel. Get back into it, a lot of people are. Although the market is tough in SA, especially with the dollar situation, there are still options out there.
I paddled out with my friend who is a pro bodyboarder so I just thought he would be right if he tells me to go for a wave. So I'm looking at this wave and I'm thinking it's gonna close out so he shouts go max go. So I start to paddle for it and get caught in this 7foot close out and get slammed on the sand bank
Super interesting Ian, not easy to explain how to read a waves because everything is going so fast in the water, but with these different exemple it was great!
This vid was perfect timing because I was just trying to practice looking down the line and looking for sections yesterday, great advice, thanks!!
Thanks man. Good luck and go rip it up! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Great info thanks, appreciated the freeze frame explanations.

Awesome to hear man. So stoked it’s working for you!

Thanks so much Iain! Straight up one of the most helpful bb vids I’ve ever watched. Cheers
Glad to hear it man. Thanks 🙏🏼
This is incredibly interesting and a crazy difficult skill to be able to read the ocean so well ✌🏻
Yup. That’s why I said you need to have the experience 🤙🏼

For sure I can do that. I don’t usually warm up as most of the spots I surf have long walks to get to the waves. But I will make a plan.
If this video taught me anything, it's that I know even less than I thought I did.
🤣🤣🤣 no man! Just learning as you go.

Awesome Thanks Ian! Stoked vibes from Sydney
Thank you for these amazing videos. Thew POV break down of your thought process of choosing a wave was super helpful. Thanks for sharing the stoke.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video explaining how to read waves, great use of animations to show what to look for down the line .
Thanks man.
Amazing! Please bring more wave analysis, I know it needs experience in the water to understand, butI enjoy so much your reasoning
For sure. Maybe I can do a wave analysis on other peoples waves too?
@@iaincampbell_ that would be great!

It’s a very long one but you can start to recognise them easier and easier 🤙🏼
Can you do a video on catching waves; paddling in versus kicking in or combination of both, etc.
Very interesting. Will get on to that for sure. 🤙🏼

Thanks man. I struggeld this weekend at Punt and got into the rocks because i read the wave wrong. Big help🤙
Damn. Hope you’re all good. Keep shredding bru!
Nice work man, keep going with this videos, really helpfull !!
Awesome direction!
Now your subscribers need to learn how to read waves in the moment (without pause or slow motion).
Yeah. That’s the tough task but hopefully I’ve made it slightly easier.
You're a legend mate 🙌

What do mean by small wave primer?
Awesome explains
Love the videos🤙
Great Video Mate ;)
Hi Iain...the first clip of foam ball pushing across how does that help to indicate you're on the corner?...thanks
You will be able to see the wave coming in and then see where the corner is going. It’s simple to see when you’re in the water.

What are good boarding spots in Northern California.
Absolutely no idea. Hopefully someone in the comments can help you.
Can you make a tutorial specifically for shorebreak? 🙏
Let me think about this one. Difficult to talk about this as every spot is different and makes it hard to understand all of them. Definitely will try.
