I wish I saw your video a few monthes ago it could have saved me from being in rip currents, thanks to God everything ended well but it was horrible....When I saw I was takern so far away in just a few seconds and that swimming to the coast was no use I just decided to not loose feet and moved my arms for people to see me and shout "Help me" to the people far away hoping they would understand I needed help...Thanks to God everything ended well, and thanks to these people for having helped me, I think they were lifeguards telling from the color of their red jersey back to the coast...May God bless those people and all people saving the others in the World, and may God bless you man for your knowledge. We should had learnt all this at school..
Dude, years ago prolly 13 yrs when I was first learning to bodyboarding I was at my home break @ sand island on Oahu. I was out there getting a few good rides and getting an easy time paddling back out. The conditions were choppy and this place was sharky too. I was out there about hour, hour and a half and no one was around me. I started freaking out cuz I hate waiting and the sets settled down so I tried to paddle back in, then I realized I was getting tired barely moving. I realized I was in a rip current and panicked cuz I'm by myself. I fought the rip and it took me at least 25 minutes to get to shore which only took 5min to get out. I stopped for a good while because of that experience. Now I'm so much better BB and I feel confident out there now. But when you're just starting out that can be scary AF.
Yes that could definitely get you to stop. Mental story man and I’m sure a lot of us have been in that situation. Props for coming back and stoked you’re on the boog again.
As an older person 58 and very new to the sport where are some good starting locations that offer enough wave to be enjoyable but not too much as I try to learn these skills. I live in North East U.S with very short summer season but do get down to South east US (florida) through out the year. Thanks and appreciate all the safety advice on your videos
Sometimes when I'm attempting airs on closeout sections I'm landing really hard. Hurt myself a few times. If you can do a video on landing properly that would be great. Thanks for the tips.
I have spoken about this a lot in video of how to keep your elbows in as close to you body and remember that you need to also keep cantered in your board. Unfortunately some landings are going to be hard and sore. That’s part of the sport.
howzit bru you have really fueled started my passion to bodyboard! it would mean the world to me if we could surf toghether as i also live in somerset west.Ive seen you in the lineup at caves
I'm starting bpdybparding in egypt. North Coast sand beaches. I was wondering if u can provide me any help as bodybpadring is not very popular in egypt yet
I love to go swimming but i can not swim. I want to avoid rip currents but if i get caught in one, would it be safer to have a board with me to float on???? I live in CT
The most important parts of this video for you to remember are to observe where the foam and/or sand is brought out in a line, where you can see the water being more rippled and disturbed than elsewhere and also where the waves seem mushy, crumbly or soft. As Iain says, you should try to get a good and high vantage point (dunes, cliffs, the roof of your car, whatever works) to try and see these lines moving out to sea. If you don't have a vantage point, then you need to specifically focus on where you can see the rippling effect of water and where the waves appear softer or more crumbly. You won't be able to see the lines of foam/sand beyond the break. Iain's photos of Caves are super good to get an idea of how that looks over a sand bar. Hope this helps, because learning to read rips has probably been the single most important thing I've learnt in my nearly two decades of surfing and bodyboarding.
Bro thoses rips are like obstacles for me , because of them i'm afraid to surf alone cuz i can get caught on one In your opinion how can i overcome that fear and be able to surf alone ?
I think you need to learn how to get out of them. That’s the best way to get over your fear is to face to. Never paddle against the rip and if you get stuck in one paddle 90 degrees to where the rip is coming from. I promise you will never get caught again.
I started when I was about 8 but only really got into it at 11. Surfed pipe for the first time at 19. You can definitely do it earlier if you have the opportunity.
So many people who practice bodyboarding, did anyone think of developing a realistic video game of this sport? I would love it and I would play for hours. Tanta gente que practica bodyboard, a nadie se le ocurrio desarollar un videojuego realista de este deporte? Ami me encantaria y jugaria por horas
Yes. There was a number of games back in the day but I have seen a game called YouRiding is coming back. They have a bodyboard section on there that’s insane. All the moves and good fun to play.
@@iaincampbell_ Yes I have spent many hours in that game, but I would like something much more realistic and with better physics and graphics. I have a lot of ideas and I would love to be able to bring them to reality but I don't have the money or the knowledge. Sorry for my english, i´m from Argentina.
Your English is good. 💪🏼 my Spanish is so terrible. So thanks for talking to me that way...I don’t know if there will ever be a more realistic game as I feel that many people just have the same problem, no money to do it. Maybe one day in the future.
You really didn't make paddle outs easier. You showed us where not to attempt paddle outs. I think everyone knows from childhood to paddle laterally if you do end up in rip current.

Thanks for showing what an actual rip looks like. This helps me to recognize them at my home break👍🏾
🤙🏼🤙🏼
Love the videos Iain. Easily the most concise and insightful bodyboarding vids on the internet.

one of the best vids about rips, once I got stuck at one and it was like a diagonal one, scary
Thank you 🙏🏼
Awesome video, still struggle to spot those gaps but at least I understand them now which makes a huge difference
You will pick it all up very soon. It takes time. Enjoy the process.
Love this video iain, this is exactly what I was looking for. More videos like this one please!
Thanks for the support. More videos coming soon 🤙🏼
Precious video! Thanks

Not too sure where all the spots are but you can always check in with your local surf shop. 9/10 times they surf or will know of some fun places 🤙🏼
This is very helpful 👍👍👍
Thank you from Thailand.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Man U are awsome it’s so cool how you help people understand the ocean today I bodyboarded super shallow reef and came out of four barrels
That’s freaking sick man. So stoked to hear that you’re ripping. Keep on it. Boogie Everyday 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thanks bro! Really appreciate the wisdom 👊

Saving lives.
Great vid mate. Yeww🤙
Thanks 🙏🏼
Thanks Ian, very informative like always. Could you please do a vid on bottom turns?
Yes for sure. I will definitely do that next.
Rips are great until they take me halfway out to sea, sometimes the effective paddle out scares the shit out me.
What I tried to do is show the benefits and well as the cons of them and using them.
Nice joooobbb , i love you xd❤
Great vid again Champ! 🥊 There might be some contradictions with foam. 😂 Foam boards are good, foamwater is slightly less good most of the time! 🤙🏽
Hahaha. Too true.
Good info
Stay blessed
Keep it up to beware people to save their lives

Great vid! Save your energy for catching waves not paddling out
😉🤙🏼
Nice one Champ 👍🏼

Second. Love the vid keep it up xx
I love to go swimming but i can not swim. I want to avoid rip currents but if i get caught in one, would it be safer to have a board with me to float on???? I live in CT
Definitely safer when you have a board. Never panic if it happens. Go with the flow!!
Go with the flow 😳 I decided to wear a zip up life vest
I meant, don’t ever fight the current… it will just take you out and you can swim out of it then.
Sooo sick Bru thanks for the help
It's difficult for me to find this currents when waves break everywhere, especially in sand bottom beaches
Try and use the techniques I talk about in these videos and I’m sure you will get it.

❤❤❤❤❤❤good
Yesterday i got caught caught in the worst rip current 9f my 7 year bodyboarding career. Took me 30 mins to get to shore lol
Damn! That sounds gnarly bru...

Any vid is gold mate, keep on keeping on!
Rip currents are cool until they turn into a washing machine..
Yip... but same thing to get out. 😉
Sums up rips in New Jersey

Not everyone knows that… thousands of people get caught in rip currents and struggle!
