Hey folks, there's a lot of background info, if you're interested - about the game developers, the game itself and helpful resources for playing, also The Little Mole - which you can find in the Description under the video (remember: TH-cam hides this behind the small ".. more" link!). Thank you for your time - hoot hoot!
What a lovely video. Growing up in Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic I remember Little Mole really well. It is a really cute character. My kids don't speak Czech (only English) and I was surprised how popular Little Mole was / is outside its country of origin :)
Yes, it can literally 'kill' a game at its first step in the public light. I have another game that suffered the same fate and is completely obscure now. I had been meaning to do a video about it for a long time ... so I'll now make an effort to fit it in.
Now, that's interesting as i have a special bond to owls too. We had an owl project in school when i was a kid and i loved them so much, i still do. The special edition of Baldo is beautiful. I didn't play the game, because people told me it was buggy when it came out and i didn't look into it later on.
GREAT review Britta! I've been on the fence about this game since its release all I needed was someone to help sway me. think I'm going to give it a shot now.
Yes, I'm really impressed. The game didn't get much coverage bc of its poor state at release, so I want to do a bit for those who love this style of game.
@@Food4Dogs even now doesn't seem to be alot of coverage, ive done a few videos and I've gotten a pretty positive response. The game means alot to me, my wife even got me a physical copy for Christmas
@@nemA96 OK, I searched and found your Baldo video of 5 months ago. Excellent. I'll probably post on Twitter about it as well soon - but in my experience it's *really* hard to attract any interest for small indie games, however great they may be. It's really sad, but the great majority only click on titles they recognise.
Just want to say I find it so relaxing hearing your long form breakdowns of these games and your experience with them! So much TH-cam content it so fast paced and edited that it's just overwhelming and annoying.
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. Yea, most channels stick to one format that suits the TH-cam algorithm (they're basically pushed into that, or failure). I'm not monetized and basically do as I please 😃.
I've never heard of this game, but I checked it out on Steam and it is indeed fixed now according to the most recent reviews, I will be playing this soon! Thanks for the lovely video 😊
thanks a lot for the video!❤ it made me feel nostalgic and surprised hearing about the little mole cartoon! I'm in my thirties now, and that cartoon was a huge success here in Russia when I was a little kid.
Hello, thanks for watching. I remember your name - you used to be a subscriber. People come and go, that's natural. It's just unusual to see someone return and comment. 😎
Britta your insights and these style of video are fantastic! I have discovered witch hat atelier and countless other gems I would have never known about had I not followed your channel. Thank you for producing these videos and for providing your insights for us, you are easily one of my favorite TH-cam channels!
Great video as always Britta! I love your contextualisation and references to European comics and animation. My dad and I are huge Tintin fans. Are you looking forward to the Cigars of the Pharaoh game? From what I've seen so far, it seems promising and it looks like it captures the essence of the books pretty well.
Yes! I mentioned the upcoming game when I did the PS3 home screen on Twitter for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn twitter.com/Food4Dogs/status/1684345084047933440?t=puoE6GVIbUUHFHUyNkSMdw&s=19
Baldo is one of my favourite games! I also got this limited edition and it's lovely ❤️ I got the game keeping an open mind and I ended up loving it SO much, 60h+ of gameplay, the puzzles & dungeons can be VERY challenging, but in a good way, the art style is 10/10. The initial state was rough, but the game now is very enjoyable! I wish initial reviewers took into account the fact this is still an indie game made by TWO people. Comparing it to AAA releases was truly unfair
Thank you, Ric. Indeed, a good reminder (and something I keep saying) that we need to be careful with our expectations. I'm just staggered every time I play Baldo that just 2 guys pulled off this game.
@@Food4Dogs absolutely! Their work is truly inspiring! One aspect I really enjoy (and that goes unfortunately unnoticed by most players) is how a lot of character and location names are in Sicilian 😊 Sicilian is a different language from Italian, with a lot of elements from Arabic & Greek
@@Ric_93 Oh, that's true! I do love etymology so will pay more attention to the naming. I love the attention to detail - all good games have that IMHO.
Dont forget the owl from Zelda OOT, who explains everything as many times as you want! Sometimes even when you dont want! On second thought, i dont care for that owl very much. Ill just go with Archemedes from Sword in the Stone instead. Great owl!
I was SHOCKED to discover this wasn't developed by the Ni no Kuni team - the devs here did a stellar job of replicating the style. I'm afraid I'm a little less than proficient at puzzles, but I'd love to watch someone play this game (maybe while I dive into Ni no Kuni 2, since that's been sitting around my Steam library for a hot minute) since the world just looks so cozy and charming. I really do enjoy games that have this juxtaposition between wholesome art styles and sincerely challenging gameplay. Nothing Souls-esque lol but it exercises your mind nonetheless, you know?
I'm hoping the puzzles won't get too brain-twisting - so far, they've actually been very benign 😎. I think the challenge with Baldo is more in 'memory mapping'. They talked about this in their interview - how they love the exploration aspect of the older games where the player has to memorise the layout of terrain and dungeons. There's a basic mini map and an (pretty general) overworld map, but I reckon they kept that deliberately under-spec'd to make sure the player is involved in memory retrieval of information. It certainly is a test for me (!) since I have poor spatial recognition. I don't think many proper playthrough videos have been done, but there is some coverage. If I find the time, I might convert my capture. I have footage of a lot of the first dungeon.
@@Food4Dogs Well isn't that quite the throwback! I can appreciate that approach, even if I'd be ABYSMAL at remembering any of it 😂 so I certainly empathize. I feel like, when you play as many RPGs as we do, you've got enough dungeon maps clamoring for mental real estate as it is! But hopefully they can harken back to the style of ye olden maps while still improving the functionality and accessibility of them - we've certainly learned plenty since games like (the original) Legend of Zelda were made, and there are surely some tricks to preserving the feel without sacrificing the fun.
@@homesteadhero Wait till you get to play Sea of Stars! No maps whatsoever! 😂 I'll have to see how that goes. So far, I haven't had much of a problem to my surprise - the level design and layout is excellent.
I didn't buy the game back then because of the negative reviews, even though I really like the graphic style. Eventually I will buy it someday, the artbook looks really nice too. Unfortunately, many collector editions have become very expensive in the last 1-2 years. Often it's just not worth it to me anymore.
That is very true about collector's editions - I talked about this issue in a recent video. This particular Baldo edition was ordered by me in May 2022. Since 2023 I order CEs very rarely due to the price factor.
I own this game on PS4/5 but haven't started it yet. Well actually, I booted it up and I couldn't figure out what the first objective they wanted me to do so I decided to shelf it for the meantime 🤣
This is *typical* Baldo! It can be hard sometimes figuring out where to go, I know. Have you checked the info in the Description? I mention a site there that's the best I've found for Baldo gameplay support. It helped me through a couple of tricky spots. Once you find your bearings and how the game "ticks", you're on your way. It does need a bit of patience, as I mentioned.
Presumably you mean the Illuminati. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminati Yes, the original (Bavarian) Illuminati used the owl of Minerva, perched on a book, inside a wreath circle, as shown in the Wikipedia article.
