OUT OF CONTROL DOGS LEAVE HORSE DISTRESSED

Just to say around Lewes/Brighton area I have seen these people walking their dogs before and today was stressful, to say the least. My horse is absolutely fine with dogs but these ignorant people would just not get there dogs under control despite the fact they ran back to them like three times? They didn’t put them on the lead and it puts riders and their dogs in danger. They're awfully lucky the dogs didn't get hurt and neither me or my horse it could have easily been a lot worse, I just don't see why some people choose not to control their dogs especially when they see what’s happening. And of course no apologies she actually said “we do have our dogs under control “ (I had to mute the video due to the language 😂😭)

I'm saying this as a dog owner. If you can't train your dog to come back in ANY situation when you call them, you should NEVER walk it off leash, and maybe you shouldn't have multiple dogs. Especially big ones. The horse and the rider handled the situation wonderfully! Respect!

exactly either the dog will obey every time or be in leash. I have spend to many holidays running after beefs that ran through fencing coincidently the days of organised hikes. There was so many complaints about rogue dogs that the hiking association decided to disband, the ladies managing it were pretty aged and too tired of today's hikers completely unmanageable, instructed to keep dogs on leashes permanently then proceed to release them as soon as out of the village...

She is lucky they were a bunch of sheepdogs who were just scoping out the situation. Seems like the owners just had too many and didn’t know how to properly handle them. With sheepdogs you can usually just walk or run in the other direction and they will follow you away from the thing they were investigating. Instead they walked right up to the rider which was a dangerous maneuver.

I don’t believe in truth, anyone should be kicked but the gentle men should have leashed his dogs especially since the black Shepard was almost kicked and I do understand how this situation is frustrating for someone who owns a horse and how upsetting it is to see your horse frightened and upset and not only possibly use lose hold of them and them start running away but in this situation luckily everything calmed down, the dogs just wanted to sniff, they just were excited and curious, that still doesn’t excuse what happened though. I’ll also say it’s a foggy day so if your dogs are running that far out from you off leash to the point where you can’t see them and you know people ride horse back on the same public land then the gentle men was even more mistaken to not have called them to stay within range of sight initially cause I myself take my boy off leash but always make sure he stays within sight and I’m checking my surroundings as we go and that he knows when I say to stay by me and come back that he does.

What the hell is the matter with people ? No dog owner should have multiple dogs off leash without any bloody control ! You did well to get off safely and to keep your lovely horse as calm as possible.
Many years ago, I had a problem with a dog when I was riding on the road. I couldn’t believe it but a guy with a staffie on a leas just let go of the lead. My mare was quite bombproof so I just asked her to stand. Of course the dog was darting round her legs so she was flicking her feet at him. I shouted at the guy to get the dog and he said your horse is going to kick me! I said just stand on the end of the lead if you’re afraid and I can move away. But he just stood there. Then I made the worst possible decision and tried to trot away. I did think he would grab his dog but he didn’t so the dog came with me. There was a pub car park so I pulled onto there so I could get off but the dog was now jumping up at her nose and she started spinning. I thought I had calmed her enough to,get my leg over but as I did, she went up in the air and having no stirrups and already out of the saddle, I hit the ground. My girl started galloping back down the road. The dog didn’t follow because when she landed back on the ground her hoof had cut straight through its leg (😢) Finally its owner arrived and picked it up. I refused to stay put even though one of the motorists who had stopped had called an ambulance for me. I had to find my horse. I felt sick thinking of what could happen to her on the road. There was no sign of her. Then someone asked me if I was looking for my horse and they told me she had gone up a side road and someone had managed to get hold of her and was keeping her in his allotment. Bless him! Thankfully Bomber had taken the first turning off the road up a lane to the start of the mountain on which she lived. The guy who caught her was lovely and stayed with me until my vet arrived as the reason she went up in the air was he had locked onto her knee! Fortunately there was no major damage. The vet suggested I get the dog owner to cover my bill but I had no idea who he was though I later heard he wasn’t prepared to pay for surgery on his dog so had it put to sleep. That still upsets me now because it was a beautiful young dog with a stupid owner.

Being a former horse owner, who use to go on Ling rides would encounter such issues. We called County Sheriff's dept to find out what our legal standings were. We were told if the dog comes at us off leash, into the road or attacks our horse we can do what it takes to protect our horse and ourselves from the dog. This also goes for if you are walking your dog on a leash and a dog comes out of the homeowners yard. Been there, 20 stitches later trying to protect my dog who was just 14 months old at the time, light enough for me to pick up and get to my shoulder, but the pitt bull kept jumping up at her and eventually knocked me off balance. Had the home owner not come running out when he did, I don't know what kind of damage he would have done to my dog, I got the worst of it. If you can't contain or have excellent recall then take the necessary precautions. Otherwise Don't get a dog.

This happened to my mum several years ago with a very highly strung jumping mare. Her horse was badly bitten and ended up needing several visits from the vet, and one of the three dogs that attacked her ended up being killed from a kick to the head. The owner was hysterical trying to get the dogs under control but they never should have been off leash. Multiple deer and other wildlife in the area to say nothing of the free roaming sheep. Horrible experience for everyone concerned and so easily avoided

Agreed. Dog owners need to understand horses are prey animals, if they feel threatened by a dog or other animal that's too close, they will defend themselves. Mine prefers to bite than kick. Ears pinned, teeth showing and launch at the animal. Otherwise he is a very sweet boy, but quite protective of his mum. 😂

As a dog owner and horse lover I can barely watch this. Not only is it dangerous, if the horse spooks and rans off it's also dangerous for the dogs if they get kicked. I had a similar situation with my young dog just a while ago. We passed two riders on horses just fine and were already quite a bit away when she suddenly turned back and ran after them. Thankfully she kept a lot of distance from the horses just barking her throat out. The riders took it with a lot of humor since she was still very much a puppy. But she hasn't been off leash since.

Just be cause a dog is apparently 'friendly' doesn't mean the horse is ok with dogs. Also those dogs would have started to nip the legs, especially the white one which would have escalated quickly if the rider hadn't sorted it. Those dogs are lucky they didnt end up in the vets because being on the receiving end of a full kick, trample or bite is going to cause a lot of damage and easily kill.
