I'm reading the book Goodnight, L.A. which led me to look up this song TH-cam and I never heard this song before and I'm saying to my wife that looks like Randy Meisner and reading through the comments I see that IT IS! Such a great loss in the music world: Ricky and Randy. Sad.
True that. One of those humble and thoroughly kind and decent Midwestern guys that was too good for the jackyls and hyenas in the music business. RIP Randy Meisner.
This is the only time I know of where Bob Dylan actually called an artist who had covered his song and told them that he liked what they did with the song.
He is actually singing not lip-singing with the record playing in the back ground. Good for him. I think he and Phil Everly had the most beautiful voices ever. We are so lucky to have these videos to watch since both of them are no longer with us.
gperdue1 There is no such thing as "lip singing." The term is lip syncing. It is the synchronization of a singer's lips to match that of the track. So many people get it wrong.
Let's show some love for Allen Kemp on lead guitar. He was the leader of a group called The Poor, which, by all accounts, was THE band in the L.A. clubs, but never got the commercial breakthrough that their friends and contemporaries like the Buffalo Springfield and those (future-) Eagles enjoyed. The Poor's members scattered into bands that went onto greater things; Allen was picked up by Rick Nelson because legendary session ace James Burton didn't want to be tied to one group. In the late '70s Kemp left Nelson and joined the New Riders of the Purple Sage, sparking a rejuvenation of that outfit. I was fortunate to be a friend of NRPS during that era, and Allen was not just an amazing guitar player, but absolutely one of the nicest, classiest, most poised guys I've ever met.
Thanks for the info! I've always loved Allen and thought he was criminally underrated, what an amazing player and his harmony vocals are second to none, brilliant. He also wrote some nice songs throughout his career. Great to know he was as nice and classy as he was talented. It's a shame he doesn't get more recognition, he was a terrific musician who we lost much too soon. RIP Allen, thanks for the great music, we miss you.
Too cool! That was the period Jerry was playing pedal steel with NRPS, too, wasn't it? Ole Jer stayed busy! Played for like 6 or 7 hours when it was the Dead and NRPS on a bill!
Je l écoute tous les jours, il est tellement proche des gens avec ses chansons qui parlent des sentiments que tout le monde ressent, il est parmi nous pour toujours❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@billgannon9111 You don't know much about him then. The cat ALWAYS did it his own way even when the critics came out. He even kicked his dad Ozzie out of the studio when Rick was still a teenager....
At the same time, Henley was recording with the group Shilo, Frey was in Longbranch Pennywhistle with JD Souther, and Leadon was in The Flying Burrito Brothers........hardly in "nappys."
On the show, I always looked forward to his singing at the endcof the show. Very talented and under rated as a singer and an actor. Gone too, too soon.
Gorgeous beautiful Rick❤️🔥 This is amazing! Anything of him performing live or being interviewed is a blessing to see! Thank you for this. omg I miss you so much 💕
Rick's sons, Gunnar and Matthew said that one time they asked their mom who that guy was who was, always at their house playing pool with their dad. It was Bob Dylan. Is that Randy Meisner playing bass?
Yes, that's Randy. He had left LA after his first foray there, gone back to Nebraska and gotten a job selling John Deere parts. Then Rick Nelson called and invited him to join the band. The rest is history.
I am a big fan of this Bob Dylan song. I like to listen to other versions by other artists and this one is pretty awesome. So laid back and mellow. Great job!
Randy joined the Stone Canyon Band after his brief tenure in Poco. He pretty much got kicked out of that group because he wasn't happy that Richie Furay and Jim Messina locked him out of the mastering room when the album was done. Richie and Jim left his bass and backing vocals in, but re-did his lead parts with drummer George Grantham singing ... Oh and they replaced him on the album cover with a dog.
Just guessing at the lineup along with Rick and Randy: Allen Kemp (guitars) and Patrick Shanahan (drums). Surprised pedal steel player Tom Brumley wasn't with the lineup. He might have been finishing up commitments with Buck Owens and the Buckaroos.
Rick was just a little too far ahead of his time. This song would have better fit the "singer-songwriter" era of the early 70's (Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Carole King, etc.) Also, his rockabilly music really was the forerunner of groups like the Eagles, Poco, and Linda Ronstadt (among others) in the mid-70's. But he was a gracious man and just kept soldiering on, until the plane crash.
+Kris Alutius Yes, it's a Dylan-written song, but wasn't a breakout hit like other Dylan songs were. The comments I made referred to RN's interpretation and orchestration / performance of it.
+burlingtonbill1 I totally agree with you. I like Dylan, but, Rick Nelson had such a great voice and his version of this was so smooth and mellow sounding. Great Version!
I love his voice and the background music of this song. However, I have only listened to it a few times and HATE the words. It seems "she" is compared to Jesus "Christmas give her a drum" and "Bow down to her on Sunday"! HORRIBLE WORDS. I don't know the part that he left out about the Egyptian ring. Maybe it's best I don't know. Too bad I hate the words because the laid-back melody is SO GREAT!
Christiane Gamos The lyrics are a satirical poke at her narcissism and the effect she has on him; he thinks he needs her but she doesn’t need him as the paradoxical title “She Belongs to Me” indicates.

Rick passed away so long ago that I’m use to it …. But Randy Meisner’s passing still cuts deep, that’s him on the left in black

Well said. Randy was one gentle cat

Now you and Rick can play together again
The GREAT Randy Meisner on Bass!
I laughed at Elvis and his girations when I was five, but Rick was my first love when I was eight.
He could take any music and make it his he was gifted that voice was so soft and his looks could kill
Rick was the gold standard for we girls of a certain age.
Its great to see Randy Meisner there!
From a ground breaking live country rock album that was just outstanding.
What album was that?

Rick & the SCB never got the credit they deserved for being pioneers in the country-rock genre. Sad, but true.
Yep. Should be mentioned in the same breath as GP and The Dillards, imo.
@@jameshurlbut4151 Agreed! Along with Poco, Michael Nesmith and the First National Band and the later-era Byrds with Clarence White.
This was the first version of this song I heard when I started listening to pop music back in 1969. Later on learned it was a Bob Dylan tune.
Wow! Randy was popular before he ever joined the Eagles. This is piceless. Thanks Jesmelric!

This was the second notable group he was in during 1969. He was an early member of Poco but left right before the album was released.

Excellent, always loved Rick's cover of the Dylan classic.
I saw Dylan a few years ago, and he used Rick's arrangement. He also uses Jimi's arrangement on All Along the Watchtower.

He was with Rick Nelson first, then Poco & finally the Eagles.
