Rick Nelson is one of the most underrated musicians ever. He was a prolific writer who understood his life and times and was able to put it into words and music.
A fight broke out in the nose bleed section and the crowd was booing the police, they weren't booing Rick. That's from our friend who operates spotlights at the Garden - and was there ... but the song works anyway. Lol 😉
@@dsoule4902 It doesn't really matter if the crowd was booing him or not. He thought they were, that's what's important & why the song, as you put it, "works"
I like and admire the great Ricky Nelson. He was a great actor, a great singer and a handsome, beautiful man. I mostly love his great interpretation of "Hello Mary Lou" RIP!
There's an element of constant class with this guy. He was never full of himself. I am just sad he departed so young and, in many ways, so senselessly.
I grew in the generation of "The Nelsons". What a great guy. Terrific guitar player. Nice voice. Great songwriter. For all his talent and good looks, what a humble & modest guy. Gotta love him. You are missed, Rick. A real hero.
Agreed. Grew up with fame thrust onto his shoulders and he carried it well. Only bad press I can recall, is his drug use and the problems his marriage went through before he divorced Kristin. Until his dying day, he remained kind and humble about his fame and music...not an inkling as rude as today's performers. Lord, I miss this guy.
I was an instant fan of Rick Nelson, at 5 years old, when I snuck into my grandpa's den and put on the 45 rpm record of "Hello Mary Lou" back about 1962, and got an ass whoppin' for messin' with grandpa's record player, but it was worth it. I have always remained a fan and always will. I began playing his oldies in bar room gigs in the early 2000s and was surprized at the reactions of repeated requests to play them again... This man is legendary for sure!!! It is still a "CRYING SHAME" Rick, his lady friend, and band lost their lives in that horrible, tragic plane crash...May they all be resting in heavenly peace.
Great song, Great singer. RIP Rick Nelson. I liked this song when I first heard it in High School. He needed to write more of his own music, like this song. He was underrated. Most groups in the 1970's and 1980's where louder Rock bands. He played alot of softer Love songs. I agree with what he said, "You can't please everyone, so you got to please your self".
Ricky is STILL by far my all time favorite in every way. I have him on Pandora, and listen to him when I'm driving. I miss him, and this is probably the best song he ever wrote. I love the last part where he says , If memories are all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck." That is one perfect line as a retort to those IDIOTS who booed at him in stupid NYC, All of their taste is in their mouths.
I had the honor and pleasure of playing on the original recording sessions for this. album Being in the same room with Tom Brumley was an outstanding joy. What an amazingly creative musician and lovely man. We recorded one song, and must have done hundreds of takes on it. And on each one, Tom's solo was different and brilliant. Rick had to choose. I'm glad I didn't.
@@kencooke8139 Hi Ken. I don't know who was in the touring band with Rick - Allen Kemp was the guitarist in studio. And Randy Meisner was on bass. Randy was really cool and took me to meet some guys who were forming another band. I hung with them for a couple of weeks and worked on some songs, but it didn't seem to be going anywhere so I had to leave (to get another gig). Some time after I left, they signed a recording contract as The Eagles. Timing is everything!!!
Ricks liive version of my babe is the best version of that song ive ever heard.I sure miss him. Nowadays nobody can touch him. I wish he was still here.
I have liked this song from the first time I heard it. It was such a shame to criticize such great talent as Ricky. The good side is it made him a lot better. Thank you for letting us enjoy.
Me too,I was about 10 years old when it came out.I saw him in concert with my parents a couple of years later.I sure did enjoy,it,especially this song.
My mom was born in 1935 and mainly listened to country music around the house when I was little. When I started getting into music I asked her if she liked the Beatles and Elvis in the early days of rock music and she said ' I liked Ricky Nelson ' . At the time I didn't know who he was so I listened and I totally understood why.
It's a pretty well documented story that Rick was booed at Madison Square Garden, but I read recently that one of his band members told another story. There was a fight going on in the audience and the fans were actually booing the fighting people, but Rick interpreted it as a personal thing and it changed his way of looking at his career. He figured that he was trying too hard to please everybody, and I think most of us can relate to that. One thing that kills me is that usually when someone of his fame and talent dies suddenly, I get the chance to grieve with the rest of the world. When Rick's plane crashed I was on a mission for my church, with no TV, radio or media exposure at all. I was shocked to hear of his death many years later, because when I returned from my mission, Rick's death was old news. I finally found out when I was online reading the story about the lyrics to this song. Rest in peace Rick!
Thank you for that. I had never heard or read that insight about the booing. It is interesting which celebrity deaths affect us and i which ways. I am saddened by many such passings but not deeply grieved. I feel the loss, perhaps, more culturally and communally rather than personally. However, a few I have felt very deeply. The actor Chadwick Boseman was one. Which completely took me by surprise. I heard the news of his death on the radio and felt suddenly as it I had lost a good friend or family member. I am White and although I had loved his acting, probably could not fully identify with his roles. I had to think about why his passing moved me so deeply. I think he had so fully inhabited he roles he had played that I felt I had gotten to know those characters and, through them, him. The pain of lass was real. The same happened with the passing of film critic Roger Ebert. I never realized I was developing what felt like a deeply personal connection while watching him on the Siskel and Ebert TV shows or while reading his reviews. However, when he passed, again, I felt as if he had been a close friend or near kinsman. I am sorry you missed the communal grieving process for Rick Nelson. A retired funeral director once told me that he thought the Bible instructs us to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice is that just as a grief shared diminishes so, also, a joy shared multiplies. Yes, many they rest in peace. I hope to see them all again on the other side~
Rick's version of 'Dream Lover' is my favorite, although I loved Bobby Darin as well. Rick sings it slower and makes it more of a love song. His tempo is right on.
Damn that brings back memories! Rick, Wolfman Jack and the Midnight Special...the Year I joined the US Army, was 19. Ancient history now, But Man at the memories that still bring a Smile to my face! Thanks for the flashback!

The only person who held his own with Elvis! Loved Ricky.
I met Ricky when he played Magic Mountain!! I worked there as an usher, I was in his dressing room. He was super nice!!!!!!
not many people realize this brilliant song was written after a bad experience in Madison square garden I think about 1971 Rick rest in peace

The song captures precisely the vague feeling of melancholy we felt in the early '70s with the end of the great period of rock 'n' roll.
I remember! I love anything he wanted to sing. Very talented man.
We saw him in a small venue in Houston in the 1980s not that long before he left us. He was absolutely amazing~

When I heard “Hello Mary Lou” & “ Travelin’ Man” as a 6 year old in 1961 on Ozzie & Harriet I was hooked on rock n roll. Rick was the real deal.
We all waited for the end of each episode just to hear him sing his song!!!🎼🎵🎶👍
It's great to see and hear Rick, soothes my soul. It takes me back when Rickie had a crew cut. What a talent! His wife Christine was gorgeous too.

Totally gorgeous. Loved him as a singer and The Nelsons tv show as a little girl❤
Believe me, we all thought he was gorgeous back then, and I still do!!!
That face and his voice - magic.
If I were still young and single, I would do more than look twice. I'd try to date him, then propose to him on our first date! lol.
I was there, front row. Ty for posting this, was able to see my 18 yr old self.
