Coming from an GTair2 I was undecided between the Arai Quantic (which I found very comfortable when I tried it on in the shop and also liked more in terms of design) and the GTair3. I wanted a helmet that is homologeted to the newest norm. Chose the GTair3 mainly because of the sun visor. Riding in western continental Europe the light conditions change frequently, also if you ride in and out of forests so it is a very handy feature that, sadyl, Arai doesn’t provide. I find your reviews excellent, thorough yet not boring I really appreciate that you come over very naturally compared to the histrionics of some other youtubers.
Perfect timing, I’ve just bought that exact helmet yesterday from Infinity Motorcycles. A great buying experience and a very comfortable snug helmet. Miles better than my original 8 year old GT Air 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Do you think it's worth getting the 2 if it's $300 less? The 3 looks really good, but if I could save the $300 for normal town/city commuting, is it worth getting the 3?

I have 30,000klms / 2.5 years with my GT Air II and loaded with the Sena comms it’s been a fine helmet indeed. I’ll probably put another 2 years / 20,000klms before considering a change. Look forward to your GR Air III review in a couple of years when that comes out and when I’ll be looking for my replacement lid. Nice review. 👍

When I did my ambulance training I was taught to cut the strap because that helmet should never be worn again. In a minor accident, if there's no damage to to helmet, I'd get them to take it off if they haven't already.
Currently using a GT Air 2 with SLR2 comm’s, it’s coming up to 5 years ownership in a few weeks, but I’m not sure I’ll be going with the 3. It’s really resistant to adding alternative comm’s systems and the SLR2 I found to be a bit underpowered, the 3 still doesn’t look that convenient for third party alternatives i.e. Packtalk. The venting on the 2 was average so it’s good to see they’ve improved it although where it matters around the face you say there isn’t much difference? Good to hear to noise levels have improved, and I’ve always rated the visor positioning (stays put), the comfort on the 2 has also been excellent. I need to try one on, but I won’t be replacing until the six year mark (they don’t recommend this) so maybe they’ll be some discounts knocking about by then - good review thanks 👍
chin strap that ruroc did get right was the mag Lok chinlock system, I prefure the rachet as well, I have shoie air gt2 but not looking yet, but will keep this video review in mind when I am in he market.
It’s frustrating that this helmet isn’t going to be available in the US until 2025 at the earliest. Likely going to have a family member in the UK ship me one. Seems like the perfect helmet for me!
I just want to add my experience to maybe help someone. Coming from a GT AIR 2 I planned to buy a GT AIR 3. Long story short, I returned it after 10 minutes only. The sun visor on the GT AIR 3 goes down if you ride with the clear visor open!!! it even lets air in. very bad quality IMO, Also, side note, it actually seemed worse in terms of noise than the gt air 2. So yeah, if you're like me, stay with the GT AIR 2.
Thanks for the feedback, the visor sound. Like an issue to take up with the retailer, no such problems here. Noise is subjective, I had the opposite coming from the 2, but it’s it good you pointed it out as it will vary from rider to rider.
@@mancavemoto yes indeed. However I did try other gt air 3 helmets on the retailer. It's indeed a "feature" instead of "failure". Also, the sun visor makes rattling noises if you ride with the outer visor open. Quite strange.
The problem with the visor lock doesn’t go away When I received the helmet the visor was coming down onto the top of the latch and was difficult to secure and unlatch but I thought it was just me not being used to the new system and would be fine once i got used to it. After a few rides it didn’t get any easier and I just had to leave it unlatched, if it did latch it was a right panic to get it cracked open at junctions as it still mists up like my GT air 1 I returned the helmet to the shop and found that the some other examples on the shelf had the visor set to come down in front of the latch and was a very subtle latching action which worked ok with one hand and it would unlatch with a gloved hand. Unfortunately the shop could not adjust my visor enough using the base plates but insisted on returning it to Shoei under warranty which I wasn’t happy about as it arrived defective out of the box. It arrived back and they had appeared to have got it to work so happy days , unfortunately after removing the visor to clean it I found that the visor position had reverted to its original position trying to latch on the top of the latch. I returned to the shop to get them to point out how the visor should be fitted but they confirmed that the visor was correctly fitted and it only fits one way. When we looked through the other GT air 3 on the shelf we found 50% with the latch working correctly but the other 50% were trying to latch on the top which required much more effort to latch / unlatch even with two hands, this isn’t safe messing with a visor when riding ,looks like a design fault , money refunded
See the comment above, mine does the same. Sometimes closes flawlessly then won't close at all. If you try to close it and it won't lock just push down on the visor at the forehead and it'll close perfectly again. It's like the new seal around the visor expands and contracts causing the visor to slip out of alignment
Hmmm. I have the original GT Air and it has had visor fit problems from day 1. Whistling noise and general poor fit to the seal. I had hoped they would have sorted all this by now, but it seems not. I won’t buy another GT Air I don’t think.
Thanks for this review, I find my Shoei RF-1400 that everyone raves about a bit noisy, air off the bike screan seems to get caught on large top vent the creates turbulence there, adjustment of the screen helps a little but progress past 65 mph and its there annoying me... Maybe this is better...
After always buying Arai RX7 style helmets I bought a GT2 and love it for the street. As it becomes time to replace it good to know about the 3. I assume the new shell meets the newer safety EU standard?
My Noetec 2 is 4 years old and I will look for a new helmet next year. Noise is irrelevant as I ride with 35db ear plugs (Moldex Foam), as everyone should be. This GT Air is on my short list...
Since you use ear plugs, can you still hear music or coms ? I’ve always wondered why people use ear plugs with the helmet. Something I haven’t tried yet. I’m also considering the NEOTEC 3 or 2. Is noise an issue?
I got the neotec 3 recently, coming from an nxr and hornet but I really love it, perfect for commuting and I find it even quieter than those other two (I ride with 26 db earplugs)
I use a packtalk edge in it btw and works even better with earplugs I don't leave the house without them, music is much better since you filter the wind etc mostly out
I ride with an original GT Air, which I’ve had visor problems with right from the beginning - whistling and poor fit, as well as being impossible to open just a crack. I had it sent back to Shoei and it came back several weeks later, but with exactly the same whistling problem. But I still use it anyway as I paid a lot of money for it - but it annoys me every time! It sounds like they’ve sorted these issues on the GT Air 2 and 3 models. Edit: reading on in the comments it seems there are still visor fit/ locking issues, even on the 3. A shame, as other than this I think they’re good helmets.
Coming from the GT-Air first gen, I find the v3 very, very noisy. Also there is much more air flow even when every flap is closed. Will be great during summer but would have liked a more windproof ability for cold days.
I thought that I had a problem with closing the visor, but I see that it is a general issue. I noticed that if I close the visor "as much as possible" and then press the visor, from the top above the forehead, it will close correctly.

I had the same problem with the visor somtimes difficult to clip down I Added some of the shoei lube on the rubber seal and the visor now clicks down easily every time Don't bother with the fitting I had 2 and both made it a worse fit
I had the same issue to the point that it didn’t close at all anymore when I tried with one hand. Found out you can adjust the fit of the visor with 4 screws. Took me ten minutes to adjust the whole visor a millimeter forward and now it’s perfect.
I've had the gt 2 for 4 years and found it a little noisy but I've never had to wear ear plugs so not to bad. Was excited when the gt 3 came out and omg did 200 miles today and had to stop and put buds in. It was soooo noisy. So disappointed and as can't return stuck with it
Interesting and informative. I bought one of the last GTAir 1s. Love it but wasn't impressed with the GT2 because of how the inbuilt coms interfered with fitting the Cardo so didn't upgrade. Now the 3 looks easier to fit a Cardo but that visor central lock is now right where I normally run my DJI Action 4 cam. Guess that's a niche problem and I could mount it upside-down??
Ive just fitted an osmo action 4 on a chin mount and its been ok. I added a short bar to move it out from the helmet a little, but i need that to be able to tilt the camera back to the desired position.
I don't see reviewers ever mention this but the GT-Air 3 weigh almost 400 grams more than GT-Air 1. I think they're using cheaper materials yet charging way more. I like the way the visor can has more opening positions that's the only positive I can see. I think the only light helmet Shoei do now is the NXR but that doesn't have a sun visor.
@GeordiLaForgery I'm still running my original GT Air. Comfortable, does the job. I'm sure people will start saying, for safety reasons, you should upgrade, but I'm reluctant. My wife also uses one of the last GT Air 1 models. They work for us and our channel
@@Banditmanuk , I've always thought that the advised replacement times on helmets are way to short. It of course all depends on many factors such as miles covered, owner care, climate that it's used in. I'm now in my senior years and totally avoid bad weather, so my 5 year old Shoei gets an easy time and still looks and feels like new. I still have my 20 years old Arai top of the range which I hardly have worn as I never found it as comfortable as successive Shoei's but I keep it as a just in case back up, as again it's like new. These manufacturers replacement times are obviously based on worse case scenarios.
@rogerbarrett9920 Yep, my wife & I feel very much the same. Our GT Air originals are still looking great. Unless someone can point me to some absolute conclusive evidence on them being unsafe, we will stick with them a while longer.
I find the Arai more comfortable for all day use, but the lack of visor can put people off. I've used the pro shade which i've got on with, or I am investigating light sensitive pinlock inserts.
@@TCR_09 probably contact shoei but it's a different code as is the pinloc insert. When I bought mine the retailer forgot to pack the pinloc and I couldn't buy it anywhere but eventually the retailer admitted their mistake and sent it to me. The visor is the same as the neotec 3
It’s a top line helmet very comfortable would I buy it again No because of the Ratchet chin strap buckle rubs my Addams apple doesn’t matter how I adjust it they should come out with a choice of DD ring or Ratchet strap.
The ventilation and noise insulation seems to be slightly worse than the gt air 2.adding the weight to the calculation doesnt seem like it worth's the miney difference between those two.i will go again for a gt air 2 brand new to keep another 4 years
The weight of these Shoei helmets is getting a ridiculous now. I think size Large is around 1800 grams compared to the GT-Air 1 around 1400 grams. I hope reviewers would query Shoei about this, what is it cheaper materials?
The NXR has always been a lighter helmet. It doesn’t have an internal drop down visor which saves weight. But the NXR2 will be heavier than the NXR that it replaced due to ECE 22.06
Hi Tony, have yesterday picked up the GT Air 3, really comfortable and great clear vision through the visor drop down sun visor, only thing I have an issue with is when I rode with the visor up and drop down sun visor down there was a lot of creaking going on, have you noticed this on yours? Not a motovlogger friendly design (the chin), which is a deal breaker for me. Having used Scorpion helmets for some years, I'm not a fan of pinlocks. Scorpion has visors that are treated for antifog, which is vastly superior to using a pinlock. I wish more manufactures would use similar technology.
@@mancavemoto extra layers can affect visual clarity as well as trap particles. Unlocks are a primitive hack design for these reasons IMO. You likely had to use several adaptors to work around the chin vents which are additional break and vibration points as well as noisemakers at speed. But it’s not like you have a choice with this and many helmets. The RF1400 is a better motovlogger design IMO, but it still has pin locks.
I've had the Shoei GT Air 2 for four seasons and 24,000km. I don't think the build quality is anything special on that particular helmet to be fair. Some of the material is peeling off. The padding has loosened up a lot (and I almost always wear a balaclava) and the visor lacks rigidity. To be fair I've seen other helmets where the quality in materials is even worse, but considering I actively take care of this helmet, the build quality isn't really anything spectacular.
I've had my gt air II for 5 seasons and 20,000 + miles. It has been the quietest helmet I've ever used and the drop visor is so clutch. This is why I'm going for the newer version which arrives today. Very happy with the shoei gt air because it has lasted and the quality is excellent.
@@mancavemoto when you close all the vents up, air comes up from the perforations. Also I had to jerry rig a wedge to keep it in place as it would come loose on one side when taking the helmet off

Weight is important in the case of an accident, more weight results in more stress on the cervical spine...

How would you rate the GT Air 3 against your Arai Quantic? The Quantic’s lack of an internal sun visor does not concern me.

@@TCR_09 probably contact shoei but it's a different code as is the pinloc insert. When I bought mine the retailer forgot to pack the pinloc and I couldn't buy it anywhere but eventually the retailer admitted their mistake and sent it to me.
The visor is the same as the neotec 3

You can still fit another brand of comms unit. I've always found Sena to be pretty decent.
It’s a top line helmet very comfortable would I buy it again No because of the Ratchet chin strap buckle rubs my Addams apple doesn’t matter how I adjust it they should come out with a choice of DD ring or Ratchet strap.
On the 3 or the 2? I know they made the strap thinner on the three after feedback from customers
Sorry on the GT air 3 still a problem for me shame because other wise a fantastic helmet.
The ventilation and noise insulation seems to be slightly worse than the gt air 2.adding the weight to the calculation doesnt seem like it worth's the miney difference between those two.i will go again for a gt air 2 brand new to keep another 4 years
The weight of these Shoei helmets is getting a ridiculous now. I think size Large is around 1800 grams compared to the GT-Air 1 around 1400 grams. I hope reviewers would query Shoei about this, what is it cheaper materials?
Weight has increased due to the added safety requirements of ECE22.06 certification.
@@mancavemoto but the NXR2 is also ECE 2206 and approx 1400g.
The NXR has always been a lighter helmet. It doesn’t have an internal drop down visor which saves weight. But the NXR2 will be heavier than the NXR that it replaced due to ECE 22.06
Hi Tony, have yesterday picked up the GT Air 3, really comfortable and great clear vision through the visor drop down sun visor, only thing I have an issue with is when I rode with the visor up and drop down sun visor down there was a lot of creaking going on, have you noticed this on yours? I haven't had any creaking no, it might need a bit of the silicone Oil on the mechanism?
Not a motovlogger friendly design (the chin), which is a deal breaker for me. Having used Scorpion helmets for some years, I'm not a fan of pinlocks. Scorpion has visors that are treated for antifog, which is vastly superior to using a pinlock. I wish more manufactures would use similar technology.
I've fitted a chin mount to this now, and its fine for Motovlogging. i've never had an issue with pinloks that have been installed correctly.
@@mancavemoto extra layers can affect visual clarity as well as trap particles. Unlocks are a primitive hack design for these reasons IMO.
You likely had to use several adaptors to work around the chin vents which are additional break and vibration points as well as noisemakers at speed. But it’s not like you have a choice with this and many helmets. The RF1400 is a better motovlogger design IMO, but it still has pin locks.
Great review, I think that centre push button type visor opening is bad idea, the old adage of KISS springs to mind, Keep It Simple Stupid.
I think i have to agree with you. I'm getting used to it, but a simple pull tab would be just as good?
I've had the Shoei GT Air 2 for four seasons and 24,000km. I don't think the build quality is anything special on that particular helmet to be fair. Some of the material is peeling off. The padding has loosened up a lot (and I almost always wear a balaclava) and the visor lacks rigidity. To be fair I've seen other helmets where the quality in materials is even worse, but considering I actively take care of this helmet, the build quality isn't really anything spectacular.

I've had my gt air II for 5 seasons and 20,000 + miles. It has been the quietest helmet I've ever used and the drop visor is so clutch. This is why I'm going for the newer version which arrives today. Very happy with the shoei gt air because it has lasted and the quality is excellent.
The chin curtain is a let down, they should have copied the chin curtain from the neotec 3

@@mancavemoto when you close all the vents up, air comes up from the perforations. Also I had to jerry rig a wedge to keep it in place as it would come loose on one side when taking the helmet off
