Overly enthusiastic guitarist Dewey Finn (Jack Black) gets thrown out of his bar band and finds himself in desperate need of work. Posing as a substitute music teacher at an elite private elementary school, he exposes his students to the hard rock gods he idolizes and emulates -- much to the consternation of the uptight principal (Joan Cusack). As he gets his privileged and precocious charges in touch with their inner rock 'n' roll animals, he imagines redemption at a local Battle of the Bands.

Actually Jack Black is still playing in a band with Kyle Gass, the band is called Tenacious D. They were also in one of my favorite video games of all time Brutal Legend.

I think more than being about music, this movie is about giving kids self-confidence and finding each unique passion and voice. The way that Zach and Tomika play their characters is awesome, showing the sorts of stuff that kids actually go through.
Mike white's inspiration for this movie was from when he lived next door to Jack black, and he'd be blasting this music at all hours in the morning

this is one of my favorite movies of all time! it's also based on a true story of a guy who opened a real rock school for kids (Paul Green's School of Rock). a friend of mine went to the original one in Philly when I was in high school and they did jam sessions after school in preparation for real rock shows (I used to attend some of her shows). great reaction, as usual Cody ❤

NO JOKE, I was literally thinking about this movie. I was thinking about Jack Black's wrong choice of words when he said he "touched the children" at the parent/teacher conference. Don't know why I was thinking about it, but it's a hysterical scene. It urged me to search it, and this came up.
It's all so sad to that the Dummer is passed away to in real life.

For the longest time I only ever knew jack black as this school teacher this movie was all I knew him by, now that I'm an adult I know a lot more about his antics 😂
Apparently the kid that plays Lawrence actually was insecure about his part, and even asked if maybe he shouldn't be in it.
And it was apparently that exact insecurity that made him perfect for the part.
When you're dealing with Jack Black, that feeling would go right out the window, he just makes everyone happy

Love this movie! First time I saw it I was at a new school that I hated, away for a week on a trip I equally hated. They took us to watch School of Rock one evening in an auditorium and it was the first time that week I laughed, or felt happy. Love it to this day.
i love this whole movie, but other than the performance i think i love that pep talk scene with tomika & dewey the most. this movie is almost 20 years old and i can’t name a single other one that has a scene that earnestly positive and uplifting towards fat kids. ❤
Holy shit Cody I think you aged me like by a decade asking if Jack Black was ever in a band...my dad constantly played his music, Led Zeppelin, ACDC, U2, anything that had a great sound, he'd listen to. I was always obsessed with rock music, and I love punk, so this movie hits all the best places. I also love that it subverts the "Liar" trope of all the kids getting pissed off that he lied and used them, but instead it's them genuinely loving music now. Excellent pacing and a perfect subvert. Just such a feel good movie about where the essence of rock and punk come from: acceptance.

This movie was how I got introduced to Jack Black and Joan Cusack - I remember watching this movie in music class and was blown away by the production and the music. It also imbedded in me my love for fun teachers, yeah, at the age of 12. Watching you watch that brings back nostalgic memories ❤️
One of my all time favorite movies! I was OBSESSED with this as a kid. It still holds up incredibly well as an adult and Jack Black is an absolute delight.

This is a very funny musical comedy film about a has been rock star turns schoolteacher and helps kids play a rock concert. There was a TV series based on the movie on Nickelodeon.
There have been talks about a Sequel but nothing happened.
Mike White who wrote School of Rock plays the roommate! He also started in film doing Chuck and Buck, did Survivor and The Amazing Race, and now he is an Emmy winner for the tv series The White Lotus which helped get Jennifer Coolidge must deserved awards(Stifler's mom American Pie, Pauline in Legally Blonde) Sarah Silverman former fiancée of Jimmy Kimmell is an actress and comedienne plays the snippy gf of the real Ned. Joan Cusack the principal also is quite fun in Working Girl and has an actor brother John Cusack. Zack got in trouble with the law for stealing. Others in the cast went on into law, health care, and the pianist went to Ivy league Dartmouth College. The 'Horace Green" school was probably a take off of the exclusive Ivy prep Horace Mann in the Bronx ,NY.
RIP to the kid character Freddy, who died in a motorcycle accident

I love how the voices of Po (Kung Fu Panda), Jessie (Toy Story), Vanellope (Wreck-It Ralph) and Margo (Despicable Me) are all in the same movie 😊. What’s really cool though is that two of the kid actors, Angelo Massagli (Frankie) and Caitlin Hale (Marta), are now dating each other as adults!

I’m so happy you enjoyed this movie!! It’s one of my favourite movies of all time, and it’s also my favourite movie of 2003 (along with Finding Nemo which is my favourite childhood movie). It makes me laugh every time, I sing along to step off, but I can’t sing the last one because I just break into giggles, and it just puts me in a good mood and can inspire me. This New Year’s Eve will actually mark 10 years since I saw this movie for the first time, and it’s a movie that not only I loved but it also made me see how awesome Jack Black really is because before I saw it I had seen him either voice act on multiple occasions (one time without realizing it) and getting tortured by the Muppets. I thought he was cool before but this made me see he truly is awesome and he’s become one of my favourite actors as time went on. He’s got so much energy, he’s a big kid at heart and is not afraid to show it. Plus he’s great at making people smile, laugh and feel special. And that’s a wonderful thing!!

Great reaction to a fantastic classic! Love this film. I rarely cry at movies, don’t care for rom coms, and films like the notebook make me queasy 😂 But this film always brings a tear to my eye at the montage part where The Ramones come on, and the kids are being shown slides and watching footage of rock legends like AC/DC, the Who, Hendrix and The Ramones playing; in that moment you see these kids truly connecting to the music and the artistry of a legendary bygone era, hungry to understand it and embrace it. Watching these rock legends that will never die, giving incredible performances. From a time when rock ruled the world. When It said the things we all wanted to say, and it made us strong. When rock stuck it to the man. 😂
Watching them watch this footage, seeing and hearing this rebel music for the first time in their lives, you can see something in them switch on and ignite. Especially Freddy and Zack. And it’s just magic. That part, It always brings a tear to my eye. Cause it reminds me of when music ignited something in me long ago, when I was their age. It’s such a genuine, beautiful moment. The power of the music we love, well, it transforms; it’s part of what shapes who we become. Then it lives in our soul forever. And this film shows that in such a pure way, with a montage that exemplifies that at it’s highest level. I love that moment in this film. It’s so powerful. And so true.
I have just one request though. Can you Please turn the movie volume up to match your speaking volume? Cause in this reaction the film volume is way too low and if you turn it up all the way, then your mic becomes excruciatingly loud. Please. I beg you. Match the volumes? 🙏

you should definitely check out the musical!! it's very faithful to the movie, and has more rocking tunes to jam out to!!! and the kids play the instruments for real, so it's extra impressive and fun!

Jack Black's band is called 'Tenacious D' (short for "Tenacious Defense") and it was formed by him and his best friend/mentor Kyle Gass in 1994. It's a comedy/rock band.
They had an HBO comedic miniseries in the late 90s (that's when they became famous), they have released 4 albums so far and they also released a movie, called "Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny''. They have also gone on tour several times and they're still active today.
If you want to see some live performances, you should look them up on TH-cam.
The kid playing Zach wears the Top Hat in TBOTB as a tribute to "Slash", originally the guitarist for Guns and Roses. Don't know if it was the young actor himself, or someone in the costume dept. that picked it, but Jack wasn't the only one involved in this film that loves Rock music. And tossing it into the crowd is also a Rock thing. I still have a drumstick I caught from Martin Chambers (The Pretenders) doing that kind of thing at a show. It was all just a spectacle, he had a can full of about twenty of them, and just bounced them off his drum heads into the crowd. But it was spectacular, and we loved it.
One great rock show can change the world. 😉

I haven't actually heard her do that, because I've really only heard her sing as Courtney on the Total Drama series and Courtney is one of the few contestants who like singing.
