This reminded me of the first time my step mother came to visit. She grew up in Texas and I live in the middle of Canada. There are Pine and Spruce everywhere but she just saw them as Christmas trees and was amazed at how beautiful they were and how lucky we were to be surrounded by Christmas trees all rear round. She’s since passed but whenever I see a perfect “Christmas tree” I think of her.

I love the Heritage River Birch trees too ! I have three in our front yard. I call them the giving trees because they are ALWAYS giving me something to clean up . If they were not so pretty to look at I would cut them down .

I love watching all of your videos! I bought a whipchord like you showed today at end of last fall. It was sitting by itself in the clearance of my local garden center. I’m in 7a and planted it in a small barrel container and tried some pansies underneath hoping maybe they will survive the winter as Jenny inspired me with her Creekside videos. You both have had a hand in my garden inspiration as I redo my new to me outdoor space!

The Hackberry trees are native to the Palo Duro Canyon and a few other places here in the Texas Panhandle. Our across the street neighbor has several in his yard and in the 5 years we have lived here, they went from about 30 ft trees to 60 ft (at least) trees. They are beautiful trees and the trunks are cool looking.
One of their Hackberrys is susceptible to aphids and the others aren't. That particular one is touching another one that never has a problem. He treats them all systemically, now and he has them sprayed, every year, too. That one tree starts dropping leaves with tiny holes in them every spring and fall regardless of what he tries. The others would probably be fine without anything. I don't understand why one would have a problem and the one it shares limb space with wouldn't. The others one is about 30 feet from the others.
The leaves are narrow and they are bright yellow in the fall. Absolutely gorgeous when they shimmer in our wind here.
I hope you try one to see how it does. They are very hardy and drought tolerant. Our weather is similar to the weather up there in your high desert as we are on the high plains.
