      I was wondering about the 2 Sega versions. Sega cd version is better than the Genesis version?

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@dad7275 Not necessarily.
      I've played both Sega versions in emulation.
      The Sega CD version for whatever reasons seem to play slower.
      It HAS better music and an additional level the cart version doesn't have but it's slower. It doesn't have slowdown issues like the SNES port obviously does but it does seem to play 5-10% slower than the cartridge versions.
      I dunno about you but I like faster-paced games.
      It's not an FPS issue. It just seems like they slowed the game down a bit for better-quality music. They music is remixed for the Sega CD edition and is fuller for lack of a better word. It was played straight off the disc (red audio, which means the game CD can played like a soundtrack in any CD player) but the expense was a slightly slower game.
      That remixed music audio was used for the HD edition of Earthworm Jim which was released for PS3 and XBox 360 nearly 10 years ago. The HD versions of EJ 1 were easier to get through than the 16-bit editions. The HD remix felt dumbed down and a much less satisfying gaming experience...

    • @dad7275
      @dad7275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@AvengerII slower could be good for an older gamer like myself...lol. I have a Sega cdx/32x combo and thought of getting Genesis/cd version(s) of this. I do really like cd quality sound of the cd, but there is something to be said of the chip tunes sounds of the Genesis. I'm guessing I'd like the cd version better. Red line audio is nice in cd players. Many of a time I've used them ol games for music listening.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dad7275 The audio quality is definitely better on the Sega CD and HD remixes of Earthworm Jim 1. I do think the HD versions of Jim were easier to play through regardless of the difficulty. It was easy for me to beat the HD version (PS3, played with a joystick) on DIFFICULT setting and I wouldn't even try past NORMAL difficulty setting on the 16-bit original ports!
      As far as owning hardware goes, I don't own a Sega Genesis and never had the CD add-on. I had a 32X for less than a year.
      Whether you choose to own is up to you but most of the game ROMs can be found online and emulators work really well.
      If the game has a fault in it, the emulator replicates that very well! (Yes, I am running EJ CD SE in emulation. It has its good points but I do think the cartridge version runs a bit smoother.)
      The SEGA systems I still own are the Sega Saturn (which was my favorite; still have virtually all the games I every bought for it) and the Dreamcast (of which I own every game I ever got). I'm keeping both systems regardless of whether the motor drives fail or not. As long as they still power up, they can be used. People are working on USB adapters for those systems. You'd have to gut out the CD-drives but the rest of the system can be recycled and you can still use ALL your hardware with it. The problem is the game discs. To be legal, you have to own those BUT you'd have to rip and create ISO's from those to play off a USB stick on the modded Saturn and Dreamcast. The USB adaptors are still being worked on but I'm sure they will be released someday... In the meantime, they're still perfecting emulation for both Dreamcast and Saturn -- those are far from perfect but then again NONE of the 32-bit systems have been emulated perfectly yet on PC.

      The emulation's very accurate now. You can experience the SLOWDOWN on the SNES port if you prefer the brighter colors and cleaner audio on that version to the obviously superior playthrough (with BETTER controller response) on the Sega Genesis port which has NO SLOWDOWN whatsoever AND better arranged music, too.
      I had the two cartridges and experienced the high and lows of both systems. Hands down, the Genesis port was better if you like a better play experience without wanting to throw your controller out the window! They programmed the Genesis version better. The SNES port could have spent more time having the controller input tweaked.
      The Sega CD version has the cleanest music audio of all the 16-bit ports but it's slower (5-10%; not an FPS issue) than the Sega Genesis cartridge version. Why that is, I have no idea other than it may be a memory issue.

    While technically the sound in the SNES is clearly superior to the Genesis sound chip, I have *always* liked the sound that came from soundtracks in Genesis more. The SNES gave more realistic sounds, but it always lacked the big, punchy, and groovy sound that the Genesis could pull off. Maybe it's my obsession with big fat beats and synthesizers (especially retro ones like the FM synths; I own a Yamaha DX7 FM synth which can create sounds fairly similar to that of the Genesis's Yamaha FM sound chip), but I often find myself head-bobbing to Genesis soundtracks, even at their worse quality. The SNES just never had that "mmph" that Genesis so clearly possessed.
    Genesis's sound wins every time.

    • @GarArtStudios
      @GarArtStudios 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      FM synthesizers are beautiful when used correctly. I have an old Yamaha DX7 which is basically just a higher quality version of what the Genesis's sound chip was, since they were both manufactured by Yamaha, and when used correctly, an FM synth creates some really clean, fat, and groovy sounds.
      Somebody transferred Super Metroid music to a Genesis sound chip and I will admit the OST sounds WAY cooler on the Genesis because the FM chip just is more lively and fits a game like Super Metroid way better than the SNES could. The more powerful synthy sound just worked so well with the Super Metroid soundtrack.

    • @Kos4Evr
      @Kos4Evr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Garrett Williamson Also keep in mind that the game was designed to get the most out of the Genesis hardware both in regards to video and audio. Ports rarely work when they are maximized for 1 system because of different hardware. Had they rerecorded the original sound track and made it work with the SNES sound chip it might have sounded better than it did, but at the same time some of the sound effects were muted if not missing from the SNES port (like the sounds the princess made at the end of the game and the whipping in What The Heck). Had they optimized it for the SNES, like it was for the Genesis, the SNES version might have been better. It was a lazy port and that is the end of it.

      @wrestletube1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Garrett Williamson You forget it is a proper arcade music soundchip too. Sure it was one of the least punchy YM's but it still had a unique punch to it and it did have an arcade veriation in it's own right.

  • @zanegandini5350
    @zanegandini5350 10 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    You guys brought up valid points. The SNES version is decent, but not as good as the Genesis version. It's not the fault of the SNES either, I just don't think Interplay/Shiny knew the console as well, and as a result, they stripped it down a bit more than the Genesis version. It's quite clear they did their homework when they released EWJ 2, as that game really is just as good, if not better, on the SNES.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As some who owned both systems, they each had their faults. Yes, the Genesis colors tend to be dark and audio sounds like a bad AM radio station BUT the control input response is BETTER (in addition to a more comfortable control pad generally speaking than the SNES pad) and it almost never slows down. Slowdown was VERY common on the SNES and Shiny wasn't he only developer that faced that issue. LucasArts had problems with slowdown and so did many Japanese developers including Zamuse, Rumic Soft, and Capcom. These are not chump/ beginner companies.
      The CPU on the SNES was subpar, half the throughput speed of the Genesis CPU. There was a reason they were forced to developed add-on chips for the FX games (Stunt Racer, Starfox) and a few Capcom games. The SNES CPU could not keep up with the poly output the FX games required. LucasArts was barely able to run the Super Empire Strikes Back game on the SNES without resorting to the FX chip and all three Super Star Wars games had slowdown issues still.
      There were issues with the Genesis they were never able to overcome with the Sega CD and 32X because they were still piggybacking off the Sega Genesis (for power and additional processing throughput). The 32X sound was NEVER as good as the SNES and the Sega CD still had to work with the memory of the Genesis. Memory itself has speed limitations (in addition to sheer space; neither Genesis or SNES had great amounts of memory) and Sega CD did run into those. I think memory speed and capacity is why Earthworm Jim on Sega CD appears to run slower than the cartridge versions. It has a consist framerate but it definitely feels a bit slower (5-10%) than the carts. I still haven't encountered the slowdown the SNES version definitely showed on a few levels of Earthworm Jim 1. What the Heck? level's slowdown is very obvious on the SNES.

    • @gozinta82
      @gozinta82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AvengerII I'd say the Controller Dpad is subjective. Some say SNES and others say SEGA. Both I believe are good. As far as slowdown goes, the Genesis also had it, though it wasnt as common. You could also argue that it didn't slow down because it didn't do as good as graphics on the SNES for many games, but again that's debatable. Slow down at the time was fairly acceptable as many games, especially previously had slowdown. Same with PC. Arcade was what separated them and made Arcade ports such a big deal back then.
      As far as the CPU goes, that's also debatable. While the SEGA did have a 32 bit chip in it, it only ran twice the speed during certain games or sections of games. IT was also putting out like half the colors, so yeah, you could see how the consoles varied in certain aspects. On the flip side, if sega was so fast, then why didn't it port doom or wolfensten to the Genesis? Why did consumers have to buy an additional 150+ dollar add on just to play doom on Genesis? I guarantee if you ran Donkey Kong Country, Stunt Race FX, or any huge title like KI, it would be just as choppy if it had the same amount of colors on the Genesis.
      This is why I don't believe that either system is superior. Genesis was meant to rival the NES, which it did very very well. IT was also released a few years before the SNES, which in turn caused it to have to upgrade via CD and 32X addons in order to maintain sales. An additional arguement would be the 6 button controller which was expensive at the time. Buying two of them to play certain games in vs mode was a bit much for me. Not everyone had the cash to pay for that stuff. Especially that you could argue you could spend the same amount of money a year or two later and get a PS1 which outperformed both of them.
      Considering that all the Sega CD did was add some more graphics (or memory via the CD for the game), it didn't really do much in the end. Nor did the 32X which only released a dozen or so games. Of those games, only a few were worth buying. I believe the SEGA did what nintendo couldn't in certain ways. While it was a bit quicker or more responsive generally, it also lacked certain sound fx or music quality (SNES used sampling rather than FM). Some games on SNES were better, while others on Genesis were better. Really hard to argue which was better as they both had their pros and cons.

      The SNES levels were a bit longer. The developers of the SNES port gave it more scrolling. And it had fruitier, tootier colors and cleaner audio.
      That said, the Genesis version had better controller response, an additional level the SNES version didn't have, and better arranged music. The Genesis version also didn't slow down like the SNES version did at points in the game. They had the same music on both systems generally but it was scheduled differently and didn't necessarily play at the same points between the two ports. Hands down, the music was scheduled better on the Genesis version -- especially on the last level when you're battling the final boss character, Queen Slug-for-a-Butt.
      The underwater levels on the Genesis also had wavy distortions that the SNES version didn't. Either the hardware on the SNES didn't do wavy distortion or Nintendo requested that the waviness not be implemented on the SNES version of EJ1. The point was sorta moot... The EJ1 port on SNES did not sell as well as the Sega Genesis version. EJ1 on SNES premiered the same month as Donkey Kong Country (SNES) did and guess which game sold better on SNES?!?
      The EJ developers were so furious that DKC sold better (they felt they had the better game!) and put in a Donkey Kong sight gag into the Sega CD version of Earthworm Jim 1!

    Genesis has higher resolution (320x224 versus 256x224 for the SNES), higher quality animations, more sound effects, more levels... SNES in comparison has only a few advantages such as the lens flare effect during the first stage which can be seen as compensations for all its losses but still it's far from enough. Genesis wins.

    • @bizarroeddie1
      @bizarroeddie1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scrolling smoother? IT"S MUCH MUCH WORSE!
      The Snes version on the stage Down the tubes, when you NEED to see what's ahead, it much more difficult because of it.
      And this "double resolution stuff" is bullshit. It's lower and stretched. Period.

    • @gozinta82
      @gozinta82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the double resolution thing isn't really as big of a deal as you make it. CRT's back in the day blurred the graphics due to their low resolution nature, which made comparing graphics at the time virtually impossible, unless you were lucky enough to own a large CRT (like 30 inches or higher which wasn't as common in the early 90's). This is why SNES having 3 times the amount of colors available goes a long way. You can actually still tell on a CRT. We're talking 70 or less pixels in either direction horizontally of a difference. Not a huge deal.

    I honestly think graphics for both games is a tie. Both games have many differences. While the SEGA game has a better use of color, and has that cool wavy effect on down the tubes, the SNES game has clouds at the top of Snot a Problem, The background on the final screen of What the Heck, Parallax Scrolling in Level 5, Down the Tubes, and For Pete’s Sake, and the Sun effect in New Junk City. All of those things are not in the SEGA Genesis version. It has a blank blue sky in Snot a Problem, the screen is only black in What the Heck, Just a non-moving image in Level 5, Down the Tubes, and For Pete’s Sake, and a static moving picture in New Junk City. Both games have their advantages and disadvantages, and the things that they have balance out what the other one has. So in my opinion, graphics is a tie.

    The most important graphical difference the fake mode 7 vs real mode 7 vortex tunnel still seems to look slightly better on SEGA. The tunnel is just drawn more like I would think a vortex tunnel would be drawn on the SEGA version.

    Another thing worth noting in the sound department is that Jim only goes "Yippie" when he collects anything in the SNES version, and he only has one hurt sound. And for some reason, the stage 3 theme is the New Junk City theme instead of the usual theme.

    Finally a review with pointing out the clearer and better soundeffects on the genesis. This hype about the so much beloved music form the SNES drove me always nuts, because what's the point of having real instruments in the soundtrack, but gives you an headache from listening it for more than 2 minutes. I'm a huge fan of instrumental artists, but sometimes it sounds better as an electric cover (just like the genesis).

    Wow, for the graphics, I'm kind of amazed you guys missed the lens glare effect with the sun in the background on the first level of the Super NES version, which was not on the Sega Genesis version.
    That said, while the Super NES version had some graphical effects the Genesis version did not and vice versa, the overall winner is the Genesis version. It is a more complete experience since it seemed the developer neglected to include certain features in the Super NES version compared to the Genesis version.

    You forgot to mention, EWJ was ment to be played with a Sega Genesis controller, since that's actually more comfortable for this game. Also, the instruments in the Snes version sound awful because they're too compressed, so the game would fit in a Snes cartridge.
    Earthworm Jim was too much for the Snes.
    So yeah, I agree with the final conclusion. Although I really like how the Andy Asteroids levels look in the Snes version.

    Earthworm Jim 1&2 were two of only a handful of games that were better on Genesis/Mega Drive than they were on SNES. Those along with Aladdin and OG MK1 and that's about it. I prefer the Genesis version of Shadowrun to the SNES version but those are two completely different games just sharing the same name and universe. Street Fighter 2 on Genesis is the best 16 bit port of all if you have the 6 button controller, and the worst if you have the 3 button controller.

    Keep in mind that EWJ was developed and released for the Genesis first, and was then ported to the SNES.
    EWJ was built on a revised version of David Perry's engine that was used previously in the Genesis versions of Global Gladiators, Cool Spot, and Aladdin, as well as Robocop Vs. Terminator (which wasn't developed by Perry).

      Good. Well I am waiting for your video to make my purchase. Also, I gotta admit I am a super nintendo guy and was very anti sega. My problem with the genesis was that there was no red, yellow, white av jack. This little item has changed my world though: www.amazon.com/Retro-Bit-RetroGEN-Cartridge-Super-NES-6306300/dp/B0071IDAQU/ref=pd_bxgy_63_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PDYJDSF9MC7BTYJ5TCMW
      But it also does (in a way) prove that the super nintendo is the superior system, because now it can play both. They also have one that let's you play NES and GBA games on the super nintendo. This would be a fun little item to see you guys cover.

    The genesis version was the first version and the definitive version. The PC version, along with the special editions were all based on the Genesis version, even the SNES version of 2 uses sound effects from the genesis version. SNES didn't have all the levels, used incorrect music for some of the levels, but did have some nice graphical effects.

    Another thing you left out for the SNES version is a buttload of voice samples are missing. I hear yippie almost the entire play through unless if Im taking hits. Hands down though the parallax scrolling, the non dithered effects for what the heck and space race levels are quite nice to look at. Even the lense flare is a nice touch. Even the firing animation for jims gun is better. But sega has lots of neat little touches the SNES drops the ball on. The gun sounds like a space laser pistol over a generic smg. Few more voice clips again. You get bullet casing. A bit more room to work with due to the slightly bigger resolution. I do like the megadrive sound chip but I also like SNES's the SNES may have better music quality. But it was not instrumentally better. What I also find odd is the music not even playing in the right parts. Use your head should have played on level 5's chicken fight. And level 5s music should have been used for down the tubes. It feels like it was a bit rushed in development time. If the SNES port had more love. Time and effort it could have easily done that of the genesis version and then some.
    I grew up with the mega drive version btw.
