Ted Neeley's power, portraying Jesus through subtle innocence, is striking. He's never over the top or forced. It's so sensitive that when he lets loose its becomes so powerful you get chills then tears....and you BELIEVE.
Steve Balsamo is bloody amazing in the roll. His Gethsemane is STUNNING. To me, Ted Neeley and Steve Balsamo share the equal rights to the roll. It is like the roll of Dr. Frank'N'Furter from Rocky Horror, Tim Curry and David Bedella are both equally STUNNING in the roll as Frank.
As always I am moved to tears. Always sung with such incredible conviction. This song, Ted Neeley's voice and JCSS is timeless! Thank you for decades of beautiful, heartfelt music. 💜🙏💜
Dear Ted, The Creator has wanted you to keep your voice and your talent for so many years because this song is more than just a song; It is already a prayer that invites so many of us to faith. ♥

Happy Easter Sunday! 🐣☀️✝️🕉️ This is one of the greatest songs in theater history and Ted Neeley still hits that rock-n-roll high note!!! 🗣️🎤🎶 I connect with this song deeply! To me, Easter is way more important that Christmas. Jesus being born was the easiest thing he did. Living life on earth, getting to the cross, taking one for humanity, and then coming back from the dead like “WHAT!” is the greatest “F’Round, F’Out” movement of all time! Say it ain’t so! 🙌🏼😁 If Jesus can have a moment when he doubted himself but still stayed committed to the divine contract, then it’s ok for all of us to feel this way too sometimes. This song reminds me to never give up and to hold on to faith because JOY COMES IN THE MORNING! ✊🏾no one could sing this song better than Ted Neeley. This just sent me back 50 years. This was the greatest explanation of the story of the life of Jesus that I had, and have, ever seen. I saw the movie first and it all finally made sense to me. Then, of course, I had to have the album (which I still have). When the stage production came to Portland, my Grandma bought us tickets and we went and saw it live. I always wondered why Ted Neely never became famous for other work. But I guess when you've been Jesus, you can't really ascend any higher...
I believe JCS was his passion and it was all he wanted to do, and I support him in that fully. He is living his dream right here, right now, and he just couldn't ask for more.

My parents had cable when it first came available in early 70s. This masterpiece was one of the movies that was continuosly shown commercial free! Watched it I don't know how many times as a preteen. Amazing every time, then and now 50 years later!
They are really good and I like the cast from the movie the best, but you know they were not the original cast, that was Ian Gillian as Jesus and Murray Head as Judas (for example).
Had the absolute pleasure of seeing Ted Neeley in the 1993 revival in Boston, Carl Anderson was sick, which bummed me out, but I still remember that performance. I loved every minute and wish I still had the T-shirt.
Your voice still gives me goosebumps and brings me to tears just like it did 50 years ago. I can’t count the number of times I’ve listened to you sing Gethsemane and I’m always awed by your voice.
The power of those high notes piratically knocked me out of my seat. Backed by great orchestration, the perfectly synched original film, and the quiet tribute to Carl Anderson, this was an incredible performance.
Ted Neeley, Thank you for everything! I watched JCS as a teenager in the 80s and my life has never been the same. You were my introduction to what Jesus acted like, looked like, mannerisms, everything. I have watched the movie probably 30 times; always at Christmastime when I think of the Savior. Your life's work has been of the highest cause changing millions of lives.
The passion and emotion he conveys have taken my breath away since i can remember. This song and particularly his stunning performance literally got me out of depression at one point, the way his portrayal of Jesus surrendered to his fate helped me to accept my circumstances at the time. Ted really channels something spiritual and i'm thankful for him.
Wow! When I was a teenager in the 70s, I saw the movie several times in the cinema. I had the LPs of the original version and the movie, which I liked best. I could sing the whole opera by heart. How moving to see Ted Neeley again in this way after half a century. It's great! That song was always the one that touched me most deeply - the most powerful scene in the movie. (Nevertheless, I will listen to Bach's St. Matthew Passion on Good Friday this year - another favorite piece of mine...) 💙💙💙
ed is blessed with a screaming guitar of a voice and we’re blessed that he can still hit these unsingable notes at his age. Thank you, Ted. Loved your voice when I was eight and singing Gethsemane from my apartment balcony with my friends.
Most of the real high notes in this version are overdubbed from the 1970 movie. However, the rest of his performance is still spectacular especially for a man in his 80s.
So grateful to be able to say I lived to see Ted Neeley perform this live at the Universal Amphitheater twice. Ted you been been a huge gift to musical theater and to the world. We are blessed to share this time on earth with you, brother.

@@rohadtanyad8908 I kinda think so too... especially the scream has to be dubbed in and not currently can do at 80. A lot of it is current though, I'm sure. Saw him about 5-6 years ago in Detroit; he was great. Love every version he's ever sang of it. Amazing he's still doing it at all.
@@w786opt6 he doesn't even have a microphone. that is a studio recording. he is lipsyncing the whole thing. i am not saying he can't sing it live, but he didn't here.
@@w786opt6here is a live version from a few years ago, he is heavily pitch corrected and effected on the high notes. th-cam.com/video/0QWdVHD-uEA/w-d-xo.html
Not sure it's lip synced, words are a bit different here and there and the muscles in his throat are definitely being strained. Saw him sing this live several years ago and sounded this good.
The biggest crush I ever had as a teenager! The only musical worth watching over and over again! I finally met him in Cupertino California ! He is the nicest person ever! So happy he still so very talented and Incredibly handsome!!!
I am still having goosebumps. Thank you so much, Ted Neeley for this amazing performance after 50 years. You are the Greatest of all time!! God bless you always!!
Yes thats real.
Same here exactly!
What an amazing performance then and today!!!
Wow. Sounds incredible Just as good as 50 years ago.
Insanely good. How is it possible? I was raised on this musical too and am shocked that he can still sing like this. Best. Jesus. Ever.
Lip sync and edit. Not real. The scream part is from the film in 1973.
Ted Neeley's power, portraying Jesus through subtle innocence, is striking. He's never over the top or forced. It's so sensitive that when he lets loose its becomes so powerful you get chills then tears....and you BELIEVE.
magnificent
There will never be anyone that could sing that part better than him. His singing transcends all generations.
Agreed. He and Carl Anderson can't be topped.
Guess you never heard the original with Ian Gillan...
Ian Gillian is best.
Ian Gillan, who the role was written for was superior in my opinion. Ted should get on his hands and knees and thank Ian for giving him a career.
Whether 50, 100, 200 years or more pass, Ted Neeley's performance will always touch the viewer deeply. Thanks for more this version ❤🎶
Yes true the best of the best ❤
As always I am moved to tears. Always sung with such incredible conviction. This song, Ted Neeley's voice and JCSS is timeless! Thank you for decades of beautiful, heartfelt music. 💜🙏💜
A lot of aging rock stars his age now who don't have half the chops he has today.
Sing on, rock on Ted! +++
@@Rm212-ks9eq
I’m a fan, have been forever, but this is not a LIVE vocal. It’s definitely his voice though.
❤
I saw JCSS live performance with Ted and the original Judas, Mary and a few others. It was amazing! I will never forget it. 😊
Plus, and not to take away from the man's amazing talent, he was hot...lol!
Music in his soul. Timeless!
At his age, that smooth rise from one knee.... as remarkable as his hitting those notes...
I watched the movie more than twenty times because of this song. Ted Neely is the best.
Me too!!
That Never Gets Old! 2024. Still riveting. Goosebumps.
It's not just your voice, but your eyes and amazing expression that makes you such a great performer.
Dear Ted, The Creator has wanted you to keep your voice and your talent for so many years because this song is more than just a song; It is already a prayer that invites so many of us to faith. ♥
Absolutely ❤
Amen❤
Papa, Leonidas à moi, c est pour vous !!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤💓💓💓
I was lucky enough to see Ted Neeley and the late Carl Anderson in a 1997 fantastic JCS performance at the Saroyan Theatre, Fresno CA.💞Unforgettable.
i saw them both in los angeles
I saw them both in Dallas!
Me too! Champaign Illinois. Unforgettable performance.
I saw them/met them in Florida.
My fave singers!☆♡☆♡
I had the pleasure of catching a performance in San Francisco in 1973. Still remember it. ❤️
80 years old. Wow.
So blessed to have seen Ted Neely perform in this wonderful musical 6 times & got to take my mom before she passed!
Ted, you are the embodiment of Jesus. Now and forever. I cry every time I hear you sing this. The emotion, conviction and talent gives me chills. God bless you always. Much love.
Yes, I'm in tears everytime I hear it, he is able to portray such emotion, like he was there in Christ's body and transmitting to us his terrible pain inside his heart
Jesus became white?

No one cares what colour Jesus was.
When you adopt a Labrador, do you care about its colour?
My cat was grey so that's pretty much neutral.

This role was made for only you Ted! ♥️ Bravo 👏 👏

Happy Easter Sunday! 🐣☀️✝️🕉️
This is one of the greatest songs in theater history and Ted Neeley still hits that rock-n-roll high note!!!
If Jesus can have a moment when he doubted himself but still stayed committed to the divine contract, then it’s ok for all of us to feel this way too sometimes. This song reminds me to never give up and to hold on to faith because JOY COMES IN THE MORNING!
✊🏾no one could sing this song better than Ted Neeley. I truly feel he channeled Jesus when he sang this!
What a performance. I'm 70 now and my grandson loves this movie and Ted's singing. I'm crying niw listening to it. fabulous !!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Muy buena 🎥 Película TODOS los Actores Muy Buenos tenía yo 17 Años hoy tengo 68 Años y me sigue gustando, cada "Semana Santa" veo la Película Saludos desde México 🇲🇽
After 50 years, this still shakes my soul. I was never the same after watching this movie... of course, the true story is what shakes my soul. Jesus...
That was amazing, Ted! In many ways, your performance is even more powerful today, reflecting the deeper understanding of your 50 years of reflecting on this timeless story and its meaning. Thank you for sharing your gifts!
Even after 50 years…the goose bumps, chills, and yes, the tears are in full force. Very few people can bring forth such emotion from a performance. You can, Ted, and always could. Thank you.
This album had a lifelong influence on me. Even tho I’ve seen the movie, and seen the show performed many times, including by Mr. Neeley, this gave me the same chills and goosebumps I had the first time I ever heard it. BEAUTIFUL, and I’m absolutely in awe that he can still hit those high notes!
When you hit that note “Why should I die?!!” I got chills (again!) I’m still as moved by your performance today as when I first saw JCS way back when. Thank you for sharing your talent and Jesus with the world!! Love you, Ted!
The world needs a re-release of Jesus Christ Superstar to remind us of what He gave for us. Today’s world desperately needs a newly renewed sense of direction.
AMEN AMEN AMEN
Yes
Yes
They need to release the original with Ian Gillan as Christ
I wish they would!!!!
I grew up listening and watching this. I know every word and absolutely loved this musical. Amazing and the depth of emotions is incredible ❤️❤️❤️
Im a 57 yr old woman, who fell head over heels for u when i was in my 20's. Sir, i still feel the same. I had the absolute pleasure of being able to see u live and was shocked then that u still had the ability to reach those incredible notes. And now to see u still feeling the music, im blown away. Please take care and keep on blowing us all away ❤
Simply awesome!
I saw this at the cimema when it first came out, i cried from beginning to the end seen it hundreds of times since then and still cry. Know it word for word
Mr. Neeley... You were one of my earliest introductions to the Lord... Your voice is still the same and still stirs something in my heart. Thank you!
God!!!!! That scream!!!
In my opinion, Mr Ted, you're the best performer of this caracter in the Superstar history. I'm such a fan of yours. Bless you, always.
YOU ROCK!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Man, I almost cry. 😭😭😭
Forget it... i'm in tears now. 😅😢

Bro, I agree with everything you just said. I am in tears as well. And, yeah, that scream, he's still got it for sure. Take care.
@@TheBrannagan Um... you do know that the screams came from the film soundtrack, right? He was lip syncing those! Listen carefully to this and then the film version.
Ted can't scream like that anymore.

what a performance!!!!!!!
Imposible no emocionarse escuchando ésta canción.
Eres y siempre serás leyenda Sr Neeley
Gracias por tantos años, gracias por tu increíble voz .
Desde Spain, una admiradora de ésta magistral película❤💯👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Camilo Sesto lo superó
His voice and how he portrayed the characters of Jesus are incredible and still after 50 years this passage of the film brings tears to my eyes. I'm glad I digitized the album. Thank you Ted Neely for this impressive film ❤
I was 12 in 73 when I saw this in the theater for the first time. The high G still gives me chills. Thank you Ted and the whole cast.
My parents had cable when it first came available in early 70s. This masterpiece was one of the movies that was continuosly shown commercial free! Watched it I don't know how many times as a preteen. Amazing every time, then and now 50 years later!
I'm in tears! You are, and always will be, our Jesus! Thank you for such a gorgeous rendition!
No other cast will EVER top the originals. Sobbed when I was a kid at this. What a performer! ❤❤❤
Tenía yo 12 años 😮y salí de un cine traspuesta 😮han pasado 41 años y me sigue moviendo 😮a quien haga la cuenta tengo 63 😅
The power of those high notes piratically knocked me out of my seat. Backed by great orchestration, the perfectly synched original film, and the quiet tribute to Carl Anderson, this was an incredible performance.
Absolutely awesome still to this day- you Ted, and Carl Anderson moved a generation. Thank you
Thank you so much, Mr. Ted Neeley, for continuing to moving us so beautifully for over 50 years. Your talent is as blessed as it is unbelievable.
I cried when I when I saw this at age 15 and I still cry today. So powerful!
That was awesome, He still sounds great.
Would love if they released a 50th anniversary DVD with special features and interviews from the actors ❤
Yeah that would be super cool! Are you listening Hollywood?😊
They are on strike. So no they are not listening
Ted, you still sound as amazing as you always have. This song and your performance always make me cry. Thank you for sharing.
You are so lucky ❤
This song will ALWAYS be my favorite scene in JCSS! Ted’s depiction of Jesus was spot on and this song is his crowning glory! His soulful, hauntingly beautiful voice and his masterful perfect delivery STILL takes my breath away! I feel every word of this song while he’s singing! BRAVO Ted!! 🥹♥️👏🏾🔥🙏🏾☦️
That was just as powerful & lovely as it was when I saw it in '73 as a young teen. It left a huge impression on my soul then AND still today. Thank you, Sir, for continuing what you started for so many of us, so many years ago. God bless 🙏🙏🙏❤
Spectacular
Ted Neeley was the best person for this role, and nobody has come near his performance. I wish that id been able to see him perform in the stage show. He just moves me every time i hear it.
He is just incredible! His voice....his heartfelt emotion. He just is so close to what I imagine Jesus to be like. Thank You Ted Neeley. You were blessed with incredible talent.
Hauntingly gorgeous vocals by the still amazing Ted Neeley ! The emotion and his talent gives me chills !!!

Ted Neeley still sends shivers down my spine. I grew up on the JCS soundtracks. From Christian upbringing through ultimately atheism, it is still emotionally gripping and a genius exploration of how Jesus "matters more than the things he said." This performance is amazing!
Damn Ted! You still got it! ❤🙌
I saw the movie in a theatre when it first came out, then 25 years later had the pleasure of watching Ted Neely and .Carl .Anderson reprise their rolls of Jesus and Judas live on stage. Their amazing voices were truly gifts.
