I just went through all this on my old 1997 E320. Transmission has always shifted well and one morning it would come out of low gear. Car only has 115,000 miles and has always been well maintained. First thing I did was panic thinking $$$$$ on an old car. I started to research. I know the old 722.6 transmission is pretty solid. I did service several years ago with fluid and filter. What I did know is a couple times I’ve spilled something on the console. Since there’s quite a bit of electrical in the shifter area I felt that had to have something to do with it. At the same time the ignition would not engage the starter while in park but would if I put it in neutral. Through my research and TH-cam videos I learned all that tied together. I bought a can of CRC electrical contact cleaner which works great on contaminated connections. Spayed it around the winter/summer mode switch and it started getting better. Then I figured out if I manually shifted through the gears the transmission would shift. I did the transmission reset by holding the accelerator pedal on the floor with the key in the on position without the engine running. Turn key to on , make sure all other accessories are off. AC , radio etc. Hold it down for 20 seconds then turn the key off while continuing to hold the accelerator pedal on the floor for at least two minutes: it reprograms the transmission back to factory settings. Then drive it for at least 20 minutes in a way that’s normal for you. It trains the transmission to work for your style of driving. Now the car is 100% back to normal starting in park and shifting smooth and solid while in drive. I did hit that W/S mode switch a couple more times with the CRC contact cleaner. Moral is don’t get your drink anywhere near the console because if it spills you could need up with sticky contacts inside the shifter that will aide the transmission not to shift properly. I assure a dealer would change a huge amount of money to repair this. Had I not got it to work my next step was to replace the entire shifter which can be bought on eBay for less than $200.00. Fortunately mine came around.

It is not the same as regular grease as this is non conductive. Hell put it on the board its used all the time in marine environments to protect the electronics.

If you get a thump with the brake applies going in to Drive without the car moving it could be the lock up solenoid or torque converter. Thats a starter for trouble shooting
I am having the same problem with my 2002 CL500 Mercedes. I am getting a code for the transmission range sensor however my problem is intermittently sometimes it shows what gear its and sometimes it doesn't however my car never get stuck I can always shift perfectly fine I had my car diagnosed and they said I needed a new floor gear shifter assembly because the transmission range sensor is located within that unit do you know 100% if mine would have to be reprogrammed to my car or not? Thanks for the vid , mine is c180 w203 model 2000, some times dashboard being blank ,gear do not changed , some others show the current gear position but also gear do not change , and other times work properly ..... How can I configure the reason please .. thanks in advance
1 of 2 things either you knocked the neutral safety switch out of position OR the switch is bad. Note: the switch has to be aligned using a special tool but i think a 4mm drill bit will work dont quote me on that but you get the idea.
Thanks for the video! I am trying to track down an intermittent no start with my 05 W203 C280. At times mine will show it is in a different gear before starting and will not start. If I do the transmission reset procedure it then will start and show the proper gear, but not for long, not sure what it can be, any ideas?
Well without pulling any codes to see what's wrong it's hit or miss. If its not showing the correct gear then I would say the board in the shifter is bad, you may also want to check the lock out switch in the front of the shift housing, it is a switch that has a cable running up to the column.
Hello sir thanks for video, i have c230 2000 (same shifter) wife spilled coffee now its doesn’t start even, bought another used one and it wasn’t also starting but was at least showibg D, P, R. bur wasnt showing anything from D- D+ is that shifter or it need some coding or reset? thank you
I think the used one might be bad as you should have PRND-1234 the non start issue is another issue unless the interlock is in incorrectly (the cable) - it goes to the steering column to lock out the key with a little metal tab. Won't let the key turn unless it's in Park (safety). Run a scan to see what code you get - if you don't have a reader I'd suggest getting one if you own a Benz check out the comments below Jose Cisneros and I point out the inexpensive reader from Amazon.
My 2002 CLK 320 is experiencing that exact problem. I ordered a used gear shifter that will be here next week. Q: does the whole console have to be removed ? Q #2: The diagnostic check indicated P0705 Transmission Range Sensor, is this a different issue ? Thanks
Brian MacMillan no console doesn't have to come out but it's easier. Range is the gear selector not knowing what gear the transmission is in - the shifter
Oh and mines isn't a block it's just lines but it doesn't show P matter fact I don't think I ever did it's always looked like that oh and my lights done light the PRD letters up on the shifter
Hey John...would I have to match the exact part number and year for it to work? 2000 w208 with Park to -D+...I dont have the 2,3,4 setup, or will it work as long as its the same year and same setup as broken one (neverminding the part #)??..please help
There are 2 types of early shifters one has the gears on the shifter where you move the shifter down to shift into 2-3-4 . The other type you bump the shifter left or right to change gears. As long as the type is the same you are ok
The switch starts the car in a higher gear so you don't slip in the snow. Call the "S" whatever you like but it starts the car off in 1st gear as opposed to 2nd.
Hey John I'm having problems with my gear selector. My dash will show the wrong gear, my car is currently in park (2000 ml320) and when I go to start it it wont start. I believe the Neutral Safety Switch is the problem here as the car thinks it is in a different gear then the shifter. Any help would be appreciated!
Do you know if that is the same process for the 2003 E500 (w211)?? My shifter is stuck in park. And I would like to replace it with a new one. But from my understanding "most" forums say it needs to be "married" and coded to the vehicle. I'm hoping that i can just buy a (working) used shifter plug & play. I've done my research on this and cant seem to find an answer. Please help!!
Shifter unit is plug n play unlike other transmission related issues which are hard faults and need to be reset. So put one in it'll work (if it's a good shifter). :)
So my car Will shift but when It shifts like from P to R it's hard, same for P to D, but it feels like it's stuck in 1st or 2nd gear but the letters show up but not the numbers? Do you know what could cause this ?
Oh my angel.... Thank you soooo much. I'm about to go nuts. As soon as you said to see the P... I was happy. This part is what I need. And I did spill milk. GUESS I CAN SAY IT'S OKAY TO CRY OVER SPILLED MILK.
Any chance you know the part number on the clip that links the transmission cable to the gear selector housing? Mine flew and I cannot find it. Thanks!
@@iasun5308 it has no indicator on dash i just recently replaced conducter plate but still no indicator and and no upshift so now I am going to give shifter a try.
Did you reset the TCM when you replaced the conductor plate if not it will stay in limp mode no matter what you change. The dash indicator is the shifter not communicating so a new shifter will fix that.
Hi John I have 2006 Mercedes s430 put used working gear shifter in showing all gears but now when I go to start car it just clicks any advice thanks in advance
What exactly does it do. Do you hear a click from the starter or relay and then nothing? Is the battery at 12.5 volts and is there a drop in voltage when you try to start? Did it start or will it start with OLD shifter? Is the lock out cable on the shifter correct? There are many possibilities. Does the steering column lock when placed in park?
Trickle charger showed 12.6 volts and the steering column unlocks when I turn it in on position and now it makes no noises when attempting to start it I know now that it's not shifter because I put old 1 back in same thing going to test all fuses in I will let you know tomorrow what happens thanks for your time
anyone know if the gear shift assembly 202267056 work in a clk55 amg? mercedes calls for 2022670824 but some say clk430 shift assembly will work-cant get total confirmation
Floor Shift Mercedes-Benz (202-267-084) is the latest revision for 2020-267-056 the last 3 digits are the revision number. So even if you wanted a 202-267-056 you could not get it unless it is old stock.
Great vid 1st off...I spilled a beer into mines and it's stuck in limp...this is the 3rd time I done it other times with pop/soda spills after a couple days it worked fine, this time my luck ran out(damn beer) I wasn't drinking and driving I was vacuuming and cleaning my car(really)...my question is when I buy a new shifter do I need to do anything extra to get it out of limp mode??..when I put the new one in will it come out automatically??..thanks in advance if you do reply.
Question.. I have a 2000 Mercedes 500s with a gear shifter stuck in drive. I was told that if I replace the gear shifter that I would have to reprogram the new shifter to the car. In the video you said no programming is necessary. Which is correct? Thank you
Steve Jones reprogramming is not necessary as it is not a hard fault. You must replace with same type of shifter. You can't swap out a slap shifter with the old type or you have to reprogram to a new model
John Komar thank you. I found some on eBay for same year and model. Right now I'm messed up, smh, the key won't come out of the ignition because I can't get it in park, on top of that the battery died, and thus I can't get in the trunk because (1 the car is in neutral, and (2 I can't access the trunk because I have no power. Ugh. Any advice would be appreciated. I tried to push the tabs down to free up the shifter, however that didn't work.
I brought my Benz to a mechanic & I was told I need a new gear Shifter . He told me to look for the part . A220 267 25 24 is the number on the shifter . Can I buy a used one and reprogram the car ?
They are all a slightly different what make/model/year do you have? Basically you need to remove the screws from the compartment under the arm rest. The controls and switches in the center pull straight up, there are no screws, and then unplug. Up near the front there are screws if you cannot find them look on the side of the ashtray. That's it in general without knowing exact one.
There is a plastic bar going across behind the gear shift box that is directly over the 2 hex bolts on the cup holder end. How do I get to those 2 bolts?
Does the dashboard indicator show what gear you are in P-R-N-1 or is the indicator one solid block of lights. If it indicates P for park them it is most likely the conductor plate or solenoid on conductor plate.
There are several videos on this ML430 shifter issue. This is by far the best video about the issue. Kudos and thanks a bunch. Now, where did I put that Mercedes sledge hammer to apply the correct fix, i.e. grab the toe of the Mercedes designer and smash their little toe for designing such a piece of shit! I mean they could have at least put a plastic tray over it to protect from liquid spills but no, that would be too easy.
My CL 500...2002...show me on display P...but i am in D...and my transmission isnin limp position..so i can drive max 30 miles per hour...terrible..!!!
Miles doesn't matter. If the dash correctly shows the gear you are in than the trans has entered limp mode. There are several causes but in most instances it is the hall sensor on the conductor plate and it is an easy fix, very much like changing transmission fluid and filter in older cars, which you should also do while changing plate, IF that is the cause. Keep in mind even if you replace the plate the TCM will have to be reset and cleared or it will NOT work with a new part. The part is $85 on Amazon or eBay and comes with a new gasket, filter, o-ring, and plug for TCM connection. 1-2 hours depending on your skill level
Hi john I’m getting the code p0720 “output shaft sensor circuit” on my 2000 ml320. It only goes to about 30mph and the won’t shift up. Any idea where the output shaft sensor circuit is located? Does it have to do with the shifter? I already tried replacing the conductor plate and had no luck. Thanks
That is the Hall sensor on the conductor plate the little silver looking buttons on the front on the plate. Replacing the plate WILL NOT work unless you clear the codes from the transmission.
John Komar thanks John! Do you have a scanner that you can recommend me to clear these codes? I know you can get them from eBay, but if you can recommend one I’d appreciate it!and thanks again for the reply and everything!
I have several but the least expensive one that does the job on the ML series is the iCard scanner available on Amazon amzn.to/2NM1RW8 if you use the link yes I get a small commission or don't use the link and search for it on Amazon its from iCard. I will tell you there is basically no support but the unit is self explanatory just select BENZ and do let it do it automatically instead of manually to scan the system. Then do the reset AFTER the scan completes. The off the shelf ones at the major auto parts chains will not reset the transmission code. If you own a Mercedes its the best investment you can make.
John Komar hey john, here I am again. Thanks for all your help by the way.... so I bought the scanner, but it doesn’t show up any transmission codes when I run it on AUTOMATIC. so I tried MANUAL, and select transmission, but it says there is no connection to the Edi or something like that. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the vid , mine is c180 w203 model 2000, some times dashboard being blank ,gear do not changed , some others show the current gear position but also gear do not change , and other times work properly ..... How can I configure the reason please .. thanks in advance
Sounds like a short in the circuit board, replace the shifter
i did change the shifter, but the car does start in neutral position, in park does not start. What i need to do?
1 of 2 things either you knocked the neutral safety switch out of position OR the switch is bad. Note: the switch has to be aligned using a special tool but i think a 4mm drill bit will work dont quote me on that but you get the idea.
Thank you think that is my problem of water👌my sunroof leak....
can you fix one to line the gear back in the right gear.
Is the gear selection on the dash off or the actual gear on the transmission. There is an adjustment on the cable if that is the case.
we checked cable it's fine. the gears show on the dash it wont catch park and I have to slam the shifter in to gears
if the module is faulty does it cause intermitant starting'
No
No but without a scan tool hard to tell
@@wetsoup thankyou
Thanks for the video! I am trying to track down an intermittent no start with my 05 W203 C280. At times mine will show it is in a different gear before starting and will not start. If I do the transmission reset procedure it then will start and show the proper gear, but not for long, not sure what it can be, any ideas?
Well without pulling any codes to see what's wrong it's hit or miss. If its not showing the correct gear then I would say the board in the shifter is bad, you may also want to check the lock out switch in the front of the shift housing, it is a switch that has a cable running up to the column.
@@wetsoup Thanks. Yes working on getting the MB 2 scanner. Appreciate the reply.
The Truth hello! sorry to hear that, i sold mine to junkyard for 140( sad
See my reply
Winter / summer button? It's wėrks? (Spelling may be off) / sport.. I thought
The switch starts the car in a higher gear so you don't slip in the snow. Call the "S" whatever you like but it starts the car off in 1st gear as opposed to 2nd.
Great video would this cause a no crank??
Kevin Wright no it will not. The motor will still crank and run
I have the same issue...trans not shifting after I spilled a drink in the console
Hi i have a mercedes CLK 2.3 kompressor and i spilled drink on the shift, my question is can i replace it whit another one it is the model of 2001..
Yes
@@iasun5308 thank you very much
Oh my angel....
Thanks!
Yes I do Part # 000 994 41 60 order from parts geek they are about $4 USD. Its called Automatic Transmission Shift Linkage Clip
Getting mine replaced i bought a new shifter once its plugged in will it upshift?
It depends.. Is it the shifter or is it the conductor plate. Does the dash display what gear you are in? If so replacing shifter will not work.
Are you sure the battery isn't dead or at least low ?
@@iasun5308 ok putting battery on charger today til full charge I'll let you know what happens thank you for replying john
Nothing is it plug n play for 2006 s430 to if so I'm going to check starter relay because shifter was used shifter tested an is n good condition
Trickle charger showed 12.6 volts and the steering column unlocks when I turn it in on position and now it makes no noises when attempting to start it I know now that it's not shifter because I put old 1 back in same thing going to test all fuses in I will let you know tomorrow what happens thanks for your time
My check engine light went on my dash plus if I shift it the granny kicks now
May or may not be related does the dash indicator show you the correct gear that the shifter is in? IE P for park D for Drive
anyone know if the gear shift assembly 202267056 work in a clk55 amg? mercedes calls for 2022670824 but some say clk430 shift assembly will work-cant get total confirmation
If it is the shift board shorted then a replacement is plug and play NO programming or reset needed.
@@wetsoup thanks so much for responding. Good man. Again thanks!!
@@wetsoup you didn have to mate the second hand shifter you got ? was this mercedes from the old era?

I brought my Benz to a mechanic & I was told I need a new gear
Shifter . He told me to look for the part .
A220 267 25 24 is the number on the shifter .
Can I buy a used one and reprogram the car ?
Those shifters are a dime a dozen in the junk yard don't waste your time trying to retrofit.
Can you please share a link for the how to video on Removing the Center Console? 🙂
John Komar
I have a 2000 Mercedes Clk430 Convertible
There is a plastic bar going across behind the gear shift box that is directly over the 2 hex bolts on the cup holder end. How do I get to those 2 bolts?
Can you post how to remove the console? Thanks
Hello I managed to do mine without removing the console, took not time at all
Hey thanks man this video really helped me out a lot thank you sir you are a godsend!
I dropped my drink and my Mercedes Benz stays on first gear
You can try contact cleaner and see if the dash display changes and shows the gear you're in then your good otherwise change the shifter.
John Komar thank you this video was helpful
John Komar mine drives like 40 then it don't shift to next gear and it reverses
Does the dashboard indicator show what gear you are in P-R-N-1 or is the indicator one solid block of lights. If it indicates P for park them it is most likely the conductor plate or solenoid on conductor plate.
John Komar it's a block no p r n d
There are several videos on this ML430 shifter issue. This is by far the best video about the issue. Kudos and thanks a bunch. Now, where did I put that Mercedes sledge hammer to apply the correct fix, i.e. grab the toe of the Mercedes designer and smash their little toe for designing such a piece of shit! I mean they could have at least put a plastic tray over it to protect from liquid spills but no, that would be too easy.
Kurt Gross I own a 2000 mercedez benz e280 my car is great its tip tronic right every time I drive it just stays on first. Eny sugestions?
W208?? LOOKS LIKE MY W210 (2002 E320 4-MATIC)
Same shifter
My CL 500...2002...show me on display P...but i am in D...and my transmission isnin limp position..so i can drive max 30 miles per hour...terrible..!!!
try contact cleaner first
Mines stuck in first going to try this first
Don't waste your time - if the display shows the correct gear then its stuck in limp mode and it's most likely a conductor plate.
@@wetsoup ya it only has 90k miles
@@wetsoup nice I will dig into tommorow and see I just bought the car for $200 besides that issue it's in immaculant shape
Good Luck
Hi john I’m getting the code p0720 “output shaft sensor circuit” on my 2000 ml320. It only goes to about 30mph and the won’t shift up. Any idea where the output shaft sensor circuit is located? Does it have to do with the shifter? I already tried replacing the conductor plate and had no luck. Thanks
That is the Hall sensor on the conductor plate the little silver looking buttons on the front on the plate. Replacing the plate WILL NOT work unless you clear the codes from the transmission.
Please note that not all code readers can reset the transmission codes.
