I just went through all this on my old 1997 E320. Transmission has always shifted well and one morning it would come out of low gear. Car only has 115,000 miles and has always been well maintained. First thing I did was panic thinking $$$$$ on an old car. I started to research. I know the old 722.6 transmission is pretty solid. I did service several years ago with fluid and filter. What I did know is a couple times I’ve spilled something on the console. Since there’s quite a bit of electrical in the shifter area I felt that had to have something to do with it. At the same time the ignition would not engage the starter while in park but would if I put it in neutral. Through my research and TH-cam videos I learned all that tied together. I bought a can of CRC electrical contact cleaner which works great on contaminated connections. Spayed it around the winter/summer mode switch and it started getting better. Then I figured out if I manually shifted through the gears the transmission would shift. I did the transmission reset by holding the accelerator pedal on the floor with the key in the on position without the engine running. Turn key to on , make sure all other accessories are off. AC , radio etc. Hold it down for 20 seconds then turn the key off while continuing to hold the accelerator pedal on the floor for at least two minutes: it reprograms the transmission back to factory settings. Then drive it for at least 20 minutes in a way that’s normal for you. It trains the transmission to work for your style of driving. Now the car is 100% back to normal starting in park and shifting smooth and solid while in drive. I did hit that W/S mode switch a couple more times with the CRC contact cleaner. Moral is don’t get your drink anywhere near the console because if it spills you could need up with sticky contacts inside the shifter that will aide the transmission not to shift properly. I assure a dealer would change a huge amount of money to repair this. Had I not got it to work my next step was to replace the entire shifter which can be bought on eBay for less than $200.00. Fortunately mine came around.

Was your original system HID OR halogen??

After spilling water over the shifter it would only pop into drive and then lock up. The check engine light stayed on as well. I let it dry for a couple days and then took it to my guy at German Motors and after resetting it, it seemed to work fine except the check engine light 6:29 went back on after the mechanic said no issues were detected

⁠I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting two squirrels in the road and my drink went all over the shifter and the ash tray. The mechanic said I may have shorted something and may need to replace something inside the shifter. Is it normal for the check engine light to remain on? It also seems to now jump when I shift into drive and won’t got into reverse. Is this also an indicator of a short?

Thanks for the video! Only took me a few minutes to do the entire install, a sawzall with a metal blade cut the bolt in about 10 seconds and I was in business! In my case, the driver side bushings were shot but the pass looked ok, I swapped them all anyway but I think the leaking power steering pump was the culprit for mine disintegrating.

Great video I'm getting P0705 code dashboard gear indicator intermittent incorrect or white square box and shifter gets stuck in neutral unless I letgo the brake pedal. When you removed the shifter is there a c-clip that needs to be removed and accessible from inside the car under the shift assembly? Thanks in advance Oh 2005 c240😂

How can I get one of these seal kits. I have a 2002 CLK 430 with 60k miles. It's is pristine Accept the top stop working because of the bow. Cylinder. It's so frustrating that they just don't make these seals available. Seems like you're only option is to pay top hydraulics twelve hundred dollars. I already have the cylinder pulled out and cut the notch. Just as you advised and the cylinder's apart. The green seal is in about fifty pieces.

Sorry if you take the 3 bolts out of the front axle and let drop some can only come down til bottoms out did mine on jack stands, pull out the front bad bushing first then the rear one and bolt will come right out same with install have to work around axle shaft a little. I put in rear bushing with bolt only then put in front bushing no need to buy any bolt use a little vaseline on bushing it can be done and put back exactly the way it was made originally I did it. It was a little tough but did not buy any bolts nuts used all original bolts nuts my last one I did this and purchased bolt and nut but 2nd job it was not needed believe me it can be done rear bushing in first with bolt then push in front bushing.

Good idea but i ended up damaging the head a bit by hammering on it. You should put the socket into the bolt first, and then hammer on that, to prevent damage to fastener

Hi John, I went to do this job on my 2010 ML550 yesterday but I had only bought one bolt at ace hardware, are we supposed to cut both bolts off so need 2 bolts? It looked as if the passenger side I could get the old bolt out without cutting and replace those 2 bushings but drivers side not enough room, so thinking you are cutting just that side off and not the passenger, or both? Would really appreciate if you could let me know, thanks!!

What tool did you use for the removal I’m having a hard time

wish I could report the success your method produced for others. I tried the bolt tapping routine, put all bolts just slightly back in, rotated them around hoping to find one that produced some give, but no give of any kind. I also varied the depth of the threaded bolts, hoping to hit a sweet spot, it made no difference. And in order to hit the bolts harder, I cushioned the blows with a piece of wood, preventing damage. Do you have any other ideas to try....? ....and thxs for your contribution

@John Komar Good evening from Germany, thank you for the video. I am surprised how easy it is to replace the lock on the passenger side. On my CLK 320 Cabrio, the lock on the passenger side opens automatically after about 10 seconds when I use the remote key to operate the central locking. You can then hear how the electric motor constantly tries to pull the nipple back down. Unfortunately, this has been happening permanently for 10 days, day and night. A friend of mine has changed something about it so that I can only open and close the passenger door from the inside. Can you tell me what is wrong with my lock? Does it help maybe if I just replace this part, what looks like a plug? Thank you very much for your help and best regards from Germany.

Called EPC and found out from them that this station has an air sparge system from previous leaks and that it is pumping to much air and needs to be adjusted.
