I had two Volvos in a row following a Mercedes. I've had many really good cars but my Volvos were my favorites. I could drive them all day and get out feeling like I just woke up. So relaxing. New York's Belt Parkway is very old and the lanes are narrow. The storm drains in the left lane petrude into the left lane. In my Volvos I could start out on the Southern State Parkway in Suffolk County, drive through Nassau County into Queens NY where it turned into the Belt Parkway, through Brooklyn and around the sweeper where it turns into the Guaniss Parkway in the left lane the entire trip centerened in the lane and never hit a storm grate. I've never been able to replicate that with another car, not even my BMW.
tmason995 over the years they do become high maintenance, that's mostly true for all cars but Volvos are expensive maintenance and parts-wise. The V70 was my first and most favorite but every time something failed it broke my bank. With that being said, it's a solid car that is packed with so many features that even many of the new cars don't have.
I have a 2005 Volvo V70 D5, and it costs no more to fix than any other car, DON'T use a dealer is the key !! the only issue I have had in 5 years of driving is a faulty ABS module ! cost £275 ( 350 USD) to fix, it starts first time EVERY TIME.
You won't be disappointed I love driving my First Edition R Design D4 XC40 in pearl white, so many people stop to look inside when it's parked up. It's now done 7.5 k miles and it's an awesome car, so comfortable and safe. .

4th way to open the trunk is to sweep one foot beneath the car from side to side and the trunk open. Pretty handy when your hands are loaded with bags or a body. Just make sure to have your car key in your pocket for that trick to work.
2 things you missed. You don't have to put your hand inside the handle to lock the car, just press with a finger on the marked spot on the handle. Second thing, lanekeeping assistant is a emergency feature, so it should not be used as "self driving car" however on the steering wheel on the left you can select pilot assist (right most option) which is the self driving mode, which will keep speed and follow the lane autonomously :-)
Great video! We are going to test drive one tonight (not an R version, though). Definitely want the R version. This will be our 4th Volvo. Have had multiple XC70s. Love the way they handle and lets be real, Volvo packs more in a vehicle for the price than any of their competitors. We were on the fence between a Mercedes GLA and this, and it's really no comparison. Volvo has innovated beyond expectation with these. Can't wait to drive it!
I've had this car for nearly 6 months. Considering that Volvo has always been renowned for safety that centre touch screen is the most distracting thing ever. To adjust the temperature you have to use the touch screen, there are no dials that you can use to adjust the heating allowing you to do so with minimal eyes off road. Anything requiring interaction with the screen takes your eyes from the road and as the buttons on the screen are so closely positioned you have to look longer than normal in order to get your finger positioned right. I'm very surprised that Volvo allowed this to pass their stringent safety checks.
I know that was a joke at the end but this was a review 10x better than certain others who are stuck on things like the color of the tach needle, font, and extra superficial annoying things that no one cares about.

I REALLY want the XC40 with the black roof and all the options. I've never considered a Volvo. Is the maintenance expensive? Not sure I can afford it. Nice SUV. I believe they're making a hybrid version soon.
Since you couldn't think of any I'll give you my two pet peeves; The angle of the headrests for the driver and passenger force your neck to arch forward like you're reading a book in your lap. The second is the steering wheel has a very limited range of travel in terms of adjustment. If you have relatively long legs, you may find yourself having to round your shoulders to reach the steering wheel.
I've driven this vehicle and it's beautiful all around. One thing to note for anyone who has bigger shoulders, hips or thighs...the R seats are VERY tight and not comfortable. Be sure to sit in them FIRST before you buy this SUV. The other Volvo seats are much roomier.
I don't know why the infotainment system always lags in the journalist vehicles...I have driven 10+ new Volvos with this screen and it is usually a little slow in the first 15 seconds after you start the car, but after that it works completely fine with no lag anywhere.
I notice you have Voss water from Norway lol. Also the floor divider in the trunk, when it’s used to divide the trunk, the plastic tags sticking up you can use them to hang your grocery bags with.

Beautiful car - plenty of features included in the launch editions, competent engines, practical and modern interior - but being a current Volvo V40 2013 owner, service costs, after-sales service, resale value scare me off.
I love when you start from back seat. No homo. I hate car when they don’t have leg room Enginner back seat. Come on cars company make a little room in the back seat for the passengers. I took Uber ride in Corolla the other day. God it had so much space for leg in the back seat
Dave I know you don't have time to do it in every review, but I was wondering if your bicycle will fit in the back of the XC40 when the seats are folded down, and the front tire is still on your bike? I am a big Volvo fan, but still torn between this and the Mazda CX5 GT loaded. 10 more cubic feet of storage, but a merely adequate 187hp engine. Then there is the fact that the service and sales departments are on different levels.
Along with a much better engine, yes! Definitely worth it. I've driven CX5's, and when you gas it to pass someone, it basically tells you "nope, I'll go at my own pace thank you very much". Very uninspiring!
Same with Cadillac and other upper trim level GM products. Not a new thing, but still very sweet looking! My A3 convertible has it. When looking at it, the reflection looks way more crisp than looking at something normally (not in the mirror).
Here's something bad: the coins fall through the door handle :-) (see your V90 CC review). seriously though the car looks very nice, can't wait for the off-road experience. Thanks!
Curious to know what Dave thought of the Shifter... Consumer Report is being pretty harsh on it, going as far as saying it's dangerous... Given it will need a bit of getting used to but is it that bad? My preorder will be there soon and I am bit anxious :)
It may be dangerous if you're a boomer. If you know not to click the "you've won a free trip, click to download your tickets now!" attachments in your e-mail's spam folder then you'll be fine.
The shifter is the one critique I have so far of this car. It's not that it's electronic, it's that it has no feedback or slots between RND and I've found myself in neutral several times. It's not like you'd accidentally shift to the reverse gear, because you have to tap twice to move those (D-R, or R-d)-- but if you think you did, or it didn't register, because you went too fast or something-- that's where things can get dicey.
It's not an indiscriminate tap of the lever. The required action it to move the lever all the way forward or back to the hard stop, which provides better tactile feedback than having to feel and count notches; especially if you shift quickly. No pause between the two taps for drive/reverse; else it registers as two single-tap commands for neutral instead a double-tap command for drive/reverse - similar to single-clicking versus double-clicking a mouse.
Nice car, but there are some drawbacks. Fuel economy is not very good, the trunk is much smaller than the CX-5 (which you knocked for being too small), there are no physical buttons for basics like climate control or heated seats, the gauge cluster screen looks kind of dismal, and you have to pay up the ying-yang to get features like heated steering wheel. Still a very nice car though. Very good looking inside and out.
I test drove it, two taps out of neutral to drive,then two taps to switch to reverse, very simple shouldn’t take long to memorize. Push a separate “P” button close to shifter for park

Been reviewing several cars for purchase and haven’t been able to make up my mind yet but this is now at the top of my list.
I love the XC40. It's the best little premium SUV I've ever driven, and that includes the Jaguar E-Pace, Merc GLA and Lexus NX

My gf just bought a 2019 XC40 R Design in red/orange yesterday. It’s awesome, she loves it.

The back seats do not reclin at all. Some of the competition reclin at least 10 to 15 degrees. It's tough on back seat passenger s on long huals

A lot of reviewers hate electronic shifters. I know I was a bit apprehensive in the first vehicle I leased with it, but you get the nag of it quickly.

Perhaps not blingy enough? Volvo's are very understated.
Looks good except for two things: 25 is not great gas mileage, and seriously, Volvo, you couldn't put a foot-activated liftgate on for this price??
