We’ve all got to be very careful with Forums. YES these people have legitimate concerns but people who’ve experienced issues will make a loud noise. We expect very little to go wrong with premium and mid range modern cars. So if something does go wrong, we’re dissatisfied/ angry. The vast majority of people probably don’t have issues and they don’t contribute to forums saying how happy they are. So we’re only getting one side of the story. My 2018 D5 Inscription with air suspension would be in the top 3 cars I’ve ever owned and NOTHING has gone wrong with it since new. 80,000 km and I’m very happy. I considered. BMW X3 and MB GLC. So glad I bought the Volvo.

With the XC40 electric and C40 electric the batteries are actually serviceable and recyclable. The system is a modular set up so when your battery start to deteriorate after 10 years Volvo can actually detect what cells are dying and pull them out from the car and replace them with new ones (much easier then a full big battery replacement) and then the cell that gets taken out is actually recycled as well, just a fun fact :)
I bought a brand new XC40 in October last year. Can't speak to long-term reliability or anything like yet, but I'll say that I love the experience so far. On the Google infotainment - I personally think it's pretty good, maybe most people with issues in the functionality department are comparing it to other current systems? I came from a 2014 FG MKII Falcon, so any manner of modern infotainment in a car is great to me haha. That said, I've found it to be user-friendly. No real complaints on it, but I suppose not everyone will have the same experience. Enjoyed the video as usual! Keep up the great work.
Quick comment on the EVs. The XC40 Recharge and C40 have liquid cooled batteries unlike older EVs, and as long as the charging limit is set, e.g. to 80%, the battery doesn't really depreciate by time, but by kms driven. While its too early to say how bad it'll be, but if Teslas depreciation is comparable, one can expect it to depreciate fairly quickly at first ~10% in the first 100000km, then slowly, a further ~2-5% the next 100000km. Hence i wouldn't expect these to have a fraction of their range even at 20 years old. Also, here in Norway (special situation i know), the EV versions seem to keep their value better than the ICs.
Going on 4 years / 40k miles with my T5 AWD R-Design. Had it since new. Did all scheduled maintenance. Overall has been an excellent experience. Fun car to drive, good looking, comfortable and reliable. Only real issue is drivers side heated seat failed but was replaced under warranty. Had to get new tires around 35k miles but I insisted the dealer rotate them when I noticed uneven wear at around 10k even though they said it didn't need it which helped extend the their life. Front brake pads are wearing down and need to be replaced. Due for 4 year maintenance soon which the dealer is quoting me $800 to do. I will be doing certain maintenance items myself and going to an independent shop from here on since they quoted me half that price.
I've been a close follower of your amazing video. Thank you for reviewing the XC40. 22 T5 owner here, your comments are spot on. Unrefined start stop, autonomous emergency braking triggers unnecessarily, and I have to replace my brake pads and rotors when it hits 22,000kms. I was really surprised. It is cheaper to replace them (OEM parts) in a workshop compared to Volvo dealership. Our fuel consumption is 10.5km/100km, mostly suburban driving. Not the best imo. Again, thank you for highlighting the child booster seat does not fit, it will help us to pick the right one in the coming months. Other than the above, its still a great car to daily. The build is solid and a very quiet cabin. Keep up the great work.

So I have owned T5 Rdesign from 2019 for 3 years now, I have driven some 40k km. So far only 2 issues. One day some sensor went crazy and the A/C turned the car into an oven. The whole A/C unit was replaced under warranty. Then one day the ball joint slipped off the wheel and the car wouldn't have traction. That one was after warranty and cost me $1000. Allegedly a rare case probably from manufacturing. I didn't see anything of that sort complained about online. Those were my issues, I don't experience the issues mentioned in the video. The ride feels smooth. The only pity about the car is that it is no longer AWD. Sure, it is needed perhpast twice a year but then it is missed dearly. anyway overall a good, mid (perfect) sized car for a family of four with good fuel economy. The electric range is perfect for shorter in town comutes. I would recommed it but objetively it isn't unicorn, but those don't exist anyway :)
My 2019 XC40 T5 R-design has 120,000kms on the clock and I have never had a single fault. Powerful when you want it to be but I choose economy 99% of the time and no complaints there. Previously had an X1 M-Sport which I loved but always felt cramped when driving it.
At 9:07, I have the same problem with the seating position. If the feel is a comfortable distance, my legs are cramped. If my legs are comfortable, the steering wheel is a stretch.

Thanks for making this video after my IG request a few months ago! My partner and I tested a few used models since then and found the T5 R-Design the was a much more enjoyable and premium feeling driving experience than the T4 or B4 engines. I'll probably steer clear of this one given the long term cost of ownership and lack of warranty on a used version unfortunately. in the UK you will find these in 1.5l and 2.0l mostly 1 owner 70k+ which is very rare, usually for that mileage you'll see 2-4owners, so that would tell me that the XC40 is a reliable car if people aren't selling them early on (kind of unheard of for the UK tbh)

Great info, thanks! I bought a new 2024 Volvo XC40, mostly for safety purposes, as my 2003 Honda Civic had finally reached its end. I only drive 3,000 miles a year, so it's good to know what to expect from the Volvo over the years!

Sometimes the sound system doesn't work (including indicator sound) and climate control pops up and down when reversing due to 360 camera. @@ProductofNZ The problem are all the other stuff around the engine. I am planning to buy a Dodge Durango... I know that those might have problems. But it's "unique" and the engine and tranny is rock solid (Hemi and ZF). On the other hand ... if I get a Volvo I want reliability. The old V70 times are over.
Here in the UK, 2020 saw the introduction of the B4, Petrol-Mild Hybrid. I had one for three years. An Inscription Pro. Glacier Silver with Red Oxide interior. It was absolutely beautiful. My only two gripes were that the knee bolster was so thin it was uncomfortable to sit on for any length of time and the mild hybrid system lost more power and economy than it saved. I drove a T4 for a while and it was more economical. Edit: The indicator issue. I’d forgot but mine did suffer from it. I nearly broke the stalk many times because there the ‘click’ sound wasn’t there so I thought I wasn’t indicating. Took it back 3 or 4 times but guess what? ……..Yep, Volvo could never hear the issue. 🙄 (Yeah, right)
12:20 - the bins next to the rear seats don't look like storage, but as if they are meant to catch keys or candy when they slide off the backseat, so they don't get into the foot area or fall out of the door
Always liked Volvo for being quirky and loved the neighbors xc60 T6….until the supercharged/turbo charger setup started giving grief. Now the dealer that sold it to him advising him how fantastic they are (was)…suddenly he dosent want a bar of it
We have our 2nd 23 xc40 , Petrol ,America....Ultimate polestar mild hybrid. Anyway owned many Volvos over decades, why we chose to lease instead of Purchase. Very nice car all the way around, google maps navigation is excellent massive improvement, HK audio fantastic, decent gas mileage , wish had PHEV xc40 here, not available, Complaints, a bit noisy inside, tailgate kick sensor not great.
As a long time Volvo owner, to me the XC40 was the very last of the half decent Volvos. The best were the P2 S60/V70 cars that ended in 2007. I have one of these and won’t get rid. They are much better engineered than newer cars. The new stuff today like the EC40 is Geely garbage and a Chinese con - only Volvo part of it is the badge. My friend has an XC40 and it’s nicer than the equivalent Qasquai, and the least offenof the premium small SUV. My money would go a Mazda CX or Honda CRV. The engine note is awful. Great review as always dude.
I bought a used 2019 t5 R-design. I like it, but still can't get over the fact that back up sensors weren't standard. Especially considering their reputation for safety. Even my 2011 ford has back up sensors.
Looked to be a fairly reliable car with first impressions but with the question of long term reliability and maintenance costs being on the cards it definitely feels like one to avoid. Was honestly suprised that a booster seat can't be legally fitted in one especially since some parents with younger kids might buy one. I have a sneeking suspicion Hullsy's not a fan of working on these cars Good work as always guys and look forward to Sunday's video as per usual 👍.
2020 xc40 t5 phev r design. Currently at 63,000Ks on the clock. No problems to report bar the speaker having a bit of rattle with bass sometimes after a service. Could never get it fixed. Tesla model y facelift is my next motor once released .
Given these guys seem like they're Australian, I have to wonder if they only get access to Geely/Chinese builds? Are the people commenting here reporting no issues from NA or EU and driving EU built and getting more reliability?
I have a 2019 XC40 T5 Inscription. 93,000 miles - no problems. Regular 10k service and replace oil every 3-4k miles (t5 engine burns oil apparently, so i replace frequently). Knock on wood! :D
One issue with this car is they do not want you to service the vehicle yourself. A specific engine oil required by Volvo and it is not sold in the US;only to dealers. If you iu want it, you have to import and it cost about 60 for oil and filter Further more. There is no eng oil dipstick so you have to rely on what a sensor is telling you on the infotainment display.
Thanks for the consistently entertaining and informative content Redriven! Happy to say I've finally been able to support you guys when I had to get new wiper blades recently.
My sister bought a cx30 and my mum has a Mazda 3 based off the cx30, and they're amazing cars. Gorgeous colours, ultra reliable, cheapish, love them. Just slightly underpowered, but considering the price, that's fine.
@@ZacharyT94 my sister got the AWD 2.5, and it's pretty peppy. Mum has the 2.0l, it's sluggish when it's loaded, but honestly, where they live in Toowoomba, it is perfectly fine. Emphasis on fine, it's good, but it could certainly do with a smidge more power, but fine for daily use.

I recently traded my 2017 S90 D4 with 240,000KM on it, only reason I traded was to get a smaller car - the thing was bulletproof. I've owned several generations of Volvos (P80, P1, P2, and P3) and by car the S90 (on the SPA platform) was the best. It's well designed for maintenance, parts weren't overly expensive if you source from an OE supplier rather than genuine, and it's just a great car to drive. These characteristics would be shared with all SPA platform Volvos, however not applicable to this XC40/C40 as it's on the CMA (Chinese designed) platform.
Great job guys I have been curious about this model Volvo for sometime but knowing that the brand has Chinese ownership ends any thoughts of buying one completely of the table … curious point not many Chinese people drive Volvo .
Different category to the XC-40, the XC-40 is in the same category as the Lexus UX and Mazda CX-30. The NX and the CX-5 are in the midsize segment, so the XC-60 would be the main target for those.
I cross shopped a CX-5 Akera against an XC40 of the same year. After 4 years they were the same price but the depreciation on the Volvo was insane and the Mazda was about half the price for a major service. A lot of XC40s get dumped before their 75,000 kms service. Both are ok to work on. If I had to own one and work on it, CX-5 every time. The Volvo is the one you want to drive but it takes nearly double the time and effort to keep on the road. I haven’t found an XC40 over 75,000 kms that had a major service and didn’t have the sunroof channels rotted out
@@theairstig9164 I’d absolutely go for a CX-5 even over an XC-60 which is in the same size segment, disregarding price. I own a ‘22 CX-5 Akera with the 2.5T and it is an absolute joy to drive. The Mazda absolutely punches well above its weight.

Do not buy this car! Not only are the dealerships scam artists (been through two before purchasing. My bad, after dealer #1 attempt at "bait and switch", should've went to BMW.) At 50 miles- oil leak. Oil housing cracked. At 100 mi- intermittent rattle in door. (Sounds like car was dropped off car carrier!)At 8k mi- head rests make a quick noise as if being lowered, though nothing is touched. Seat heating goes on whenever. Of course, nothing can be fixed unless these intermittent things happen in front of a mechanic. LOUD ENGINE, like it is struggling. This is nothing more than an overpriced lawn ornament. Unfortunately, spent my life savings on it due to being the safest car on the road for the price. 4 years old with 10,500 miles. Oh, and under the front plate there was a deep gauge, probable when "button"/screws were installed. Tool slipped. My state doesn't need front plates. It was "shipped in" from MD. Dealer wouldn't fix it... until the oil leak. I guess to calm me down. The paint didn't match. (We're at less than 100 mi at this point) Oh, and FINALLY got an owners manual at that time too. NOT when I repeatedly begged for one. I wanted to sell it immediately... problem.... dealership took their sweet time getting my title. THREE MONTHS. It sat in a pile on a desk. Neighbor got a new car out of state and had his title in 2 weeks. My dealership said "slow mail", finally admitting that it sat in a pile.... even though I call every 2-3 weeks begging for it. THIS COMPANY IS HORRIFIC and UNSCRUPULOUS to deal with. BUYER BEWARE. Yes, I still have the car. The depreciation to sell it and buy new was out of my price range. I used my life savings for this OVERPRICED LAWN ORNAMENT.

I am planning to buy a Dodge Durango... I know that those might have problems.
But it's "unique" and the engine and tranny is rock solid (Hemi and ZF).
On the other hand ... if I get a Volvo I want reliability.
The old V70 times are over.
@@ProductofNZThe D5s are also a good choice if you like a diesel.
I would still put my money on a Volvo engine over some Korean brand.
Always liked Volvo for being quirky and loved the neighbors xc60 T6….until the supercharged/turbo charger setup started giving grief. Now the dealer that sold it to him advising him how fantastic they are (was)…suddenly he dosent want a bar of it
Try a BMW motorcycle. It’s much worse when the dealers actually have to do warranty things. Like listen.
Just got the XC40 B3 Ultimate on a 3 year lease, comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty so should be ok, great car so far
I have a sneeking suspicion Hullsy's not a fan of working on these cars
Good work as always guys and look forward to Sunday's video as per usual 👍.
I have a t5 r-design of the same year. How can you tell if it's burning oil if there is no dip stick? I'm genuinely curious so I can check for myself.
One issue with this car is they do not want you to service the vehicle yourself.
A specific engine oil required by Volvo and it is not sold in the US;only to dealers. If you iu want it, you have to import and it cost about 60 for oil and filter
Further more. There is no eng oil dipstick so you have to rely on what a sensor is telling you on the infotainment display.
Thanks for the consistently entertaining and informative content Redriven! Happy to say I've finally been able to support you guys when I had to get new wiper blades recently.
Cheers mate! Thanks for the support
There is less stress on the crankshaft in an auto compared to a manual.
How about looking at the V40 models? Both the 5 and 4 cylinder versions? The earlier delivery ones are now getting into “1st car” price range.
Another awesome video! Can you also please review the Mazda CX30? They look great. Thank you!
My sister bought a cx30 and my mum has a Mazda 3 based off the cx30, and they're amazing cars. Gorgeous colours, ultra reliable, cheapish, love them. Just slightly underpowered, but considering the price, that's fine.
@@benwelter8890Did they get the 2.0 or 2.5L? The 2.0Ls are pretty widely regarded to be fairly sluggish.
@@benwelter8890 The 2.5 is the go to engine when the 2.5T isn’t available, which we don’t get in the 3 or the CX-30 here in Aus unfortunately, it’s a cracker of an engine, I’ve got it in my CX-5.
Fabulous. Is the S60 in the same bucket re engine reliability?
I thought the brake and tire consumption issues were just constrained to the bigger XC…
It's a great drive. Smooth and comfortable.
Touchscreens can be kept free of fingerprints by fitting Brotect matt screen protection film. That will not help keeping the nasty piano black clean though.
Notice that tyre wear was mentioned. Don't know that I would be using the tyres that were on that car. Would recommend Michelin or Pirelli. I live in Australia so I wouldn't use Continentals in our heat.
I love the nod to Swedish metal. 🤘
Not to throw you a bucket of cold water, but Volvos after 2010 are Chinese. The great Volvos are from the 80s and 90s
except they are not made in Sweden, Euro spec XC40s are made in Belgium and Oz spec made in China and Malaysia with Chinese metal.
@@Azureecosse Volvo originally being a Swedish brand, metal is popular in Sweden. The music over the safety features was a nod to this. Not the actual sheet metal that is used in construction.
What I am understanding is that the Volvo, like the BMW isn't for the long term buyer. A lease vehicle at best.
I’ve been curious as to how Volvo are in terms of reliability.
If you can, please can you review the S60 and S90.
@@TylerSaddingtoncan I ask what you paid for your S90 and what you were given at trade in?
They're like any brand. They're reliable if you look after them. Skip services and you'll have problems.
Nice vid. One recommendation. Can you guys review the BMW M125I or the M135i? Thanks 😁
F20 M135i/M140i review dropping next week!

Yooo perfect timing 😂
As soon as we saw the comment, we raced out and filmed it.
Ahaha absolute legends
Great job guys I have been curious about this model Volvo for sometime but knowing that the brand has Chinese ownership ends any thoughts of buying one completely of the table … curious point not many Chinese people drive Volvo .
Loving the Swedish safety features explanation, Adam!
But Volvos are Chinese, not Swedish
@@yslee1401 Hey mate, thanks for clarifying, but I'm aware. I was referring to where the safety features were presented in a Swedish-style song.
These look great, but the servicing prices... Eesh...
Hey guys, can you do some videos on bike carriers? Fitment etc. it would be super helpful 😊
Is there a difference in reliability between the European built vs China built cars?
Depends which one of the 44 countries in Europe builds it
@@mrgarrison3516 There's only active plants in Sweden and Belgium.
I ‘ve also have the same issue with seat positioning, not just you

I'd buy a Mazda Cx 5 turbo or Lexus NX Hybrid.
@@ZacharyT94You clearly haven’t driven an XC60 if that’s the case…
@@rowdus6186 I haven’t and I don’t plan to unless it is a loan/hire, in fact an XC-60 is very low down on my list. I’m very satisfied with my CX-5 and I stand by what I say in that it punches well above its weight.
Wait, Volvo ranks poorly? They rank above average as a brand here in Sweden.
Really don’t agree with this review, especially driving wise. I think it’s one of the best drivings experience I ever tried.
Agreed.
I bought a used one in Oct 2023 (40k kms on the clock 2.5 years old) from a genuine Volvo dealership and had no problems whatsoever . I my driving career I drove many lease cars, also pruim brands but this one is the best to drive by far. No Beamer or Audi could match it. Also not in reliability.

Best car channel on TH-cam 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love mine so so much.
True about rear seat (bench). Checked a 2023 demo XC40 and couple of used ones to realise the flat and small rear seats. Dropped from our list almost instantly.
Very high fuel costs and weak warranty, and expensive repair cost including maintenance costs.
Batteries will outlast the car guaranteed by a good 20 years

And how long you had it for

What’s on the wrist today? That a Seiko GMT?
It is a Volvo and Scandinavian so it ages very slowly.😀.
Hi guys, think you accidentally cut out the part where Adam takes his shirt off
this channel is just like someone went and read complaints and then read them to the audience. Need more personal experience to be believable. The video is quite generic could apply to too many cars.
Anecdotal experiences are only part of our research. In total, we reference forums, owner surveys, recalls, specialist mechanics, along with Jim’s network and experience as a mechanic for over 30 years.
For the price and luxury I’d rather have a MAZDA CX-5 Signature.
So these cars spontaneously fall apart?
Love my XC40 D3 AWD
I have a rental... Because damagae of '23 Sportage... But damn the Xc40 costs 11.000 Euro more. But the Kia is such more car.... The door panels are covered with cheap trunk carpet. All hard plastics.... Very cheaply made.
Lexus please.
Picked up my replacement B4 ultimate today. The replacement put itself in limp mode after 15 miles. 😡
