  • Over the time of a short week,
A friend, Myck helped me finish emptying the upstairs bedroom of its floor tiles and the earth that supports it.
This floor is placed on a pretty French ceiling and over it will be poured a "slab" of lime and hemp concrete, in order to stabilize everything and provide sound and thermal insulation, while allowing to recover a good flatness.
A small bad surprise was the discovery of some floor tiles sealed with cement at the level of the window, where the humidity infiltrated and could not be evacuated. Indeed, cement is to be avoided in almost all work on old buildings because it is waterproof, where the design of old houses needs to allow the migration of humidity.
The concrete that I intend to lay will have lime as a binder, which allows this migration of humidity.
As a reminder, a concrete is not necessarily cement, it is a mixture (in general) of gravel sand and a binder, this binder must be lime for old buildings, except for the creation of foundations where the mechanical resistance of cement is necessary.
In addition to being more suitable, lime concrete is a little less polluting because it requires less energy to be created (lime like cement is cooked in large ovens).
    Thanks again Mike!
That’s it for this week :)
