    One thing that concerns me is that the existing joists were clearly providing lateral support to the walls, this is confirmed by the stub joists into the front, and presumably, the rear walls of the building. By taking the joists out completely before re-installing the new ones would have risked the walls' stability. This is even more important at the upper level where the roof creates a thrust at the top of the wall. Also, the building in of the original joists would have enhanced that stability and using joist hangers won't provide that.
    I presume that you have discussed this with your structural engineer and are working to his advice?

    I would have done one floor at a time as they must be providing some lateral support. Keep up the good work.

    You should have left the joists in and installed new ones alongside or beefed up the existing with steel plates also listening to you is soporific

    You're a lucky guy that you got a 'girl' like Marion! She's really a big help! 🎉

    We celebrate our 44th anniversary today. My wife is much like Marion. She was ‘press ganged’ into being my apprentice to do our restoration. I have most of the ideas but couldn’t see them through without her. A good team. Thank you Hazel.

    I think you cut the old joist tight as possible then get about a 1-1/4 auger bit on a hole hawg type drill, bury the auger once or twice then chisel inward towards the void you just created. This is the wood joists in the brick/rock.

    Penetrating oil or eventually gas torch is what you need for stuck bolts. Regular WD40 won’t do much (though there are penetrating oils sold under the same brand name now)

    All prepped and ready to go! Some lovely bits of wood. If you need the space you could always lay the beams on the ground as a temporary floor.
    Did you consider fewer larger old looking beams for cosmetic effect, I wonder ? Very expensive, I guess.

    Not the way I would have done things, but I am not you. My way would have been to 'sister board' the existing joist. Maybe even triple it. Anyway, your house, your way.

    do the top first replace the joist as there wont be any thing in the way do half the top so that you can store the roof insolation

    I don't know why you are not redoing the whole floors with steel joists connected with short wooden joists with noggings? It's a permanent solution for flat floors...

    Are you going to screw and glue the floor panels? I highly recommend glue otherwise the creaking/cracking boards will send you crazy.

    • @andrewlarking7492
      @andrewlarking7492 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We screwed and glued and it creaks so much. No idea why.

    • @timcorso6337
      @timcorso6337 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@andrewlarking7492 That's a real shame. How did you glue? Did you glue to the joists or just the joint between the panels? In my previous house the cracking noise of the boards really got to me. I even avoided walking in areas of the room that made the most noise. When my new house was being built I quizzed the builder over and over about this and he said he alway screwed and glued and he guaranteed there wouldn't be any creaking - he was right. Anyway I really enjoy your videos so keep up the good work.

    You lost me. Stovepipes have been installed through existing floors and roofs for many, many decades, centuries even. So I don't understand why that determined your schedule of building? You even have the choice of building the floors around the chimney if you so desire.

    Thanks for the great videos, I am doing a similar renovation. Could you let me know what materials you decided to go with on the floor and what sizes the beams were? I have a room with a similar size that also needs a new floor.

    Nice job with the demo. I'll suggest storing the apparently good joists on the ground floor on blocks. That timber once cleaned up would likely make a beautiful open staircase. Build a tidy stack, elevated off the dirt floor and keep an airspace against a dry wall so it does not come in contact with damp. If you question the 'look' or character of the wood, use an orbital sander with coarse paper just to clean up a bit of surface and apply a little water. That will quickly approximate the loo of the wood with a clear stain. You may have some oak and chestnut timber that is priceless today (think the rebuilding of Notre-Dame).
    I see you moved the joists outside. As long as they are stored off the ground, neatly stacked and securely tarped, they will not deteriorate. If you find one that is especially deteriorated, pll it out of the pile and put is far away from the sound timber. 👍

    I would have done one floor at a time mate. Keep that lateral support in place. Dont mean to sound preachy but you really need a pair of good quality hard hats too. One of those joists smashing you the head is not something anyone wants to see happen.
