Part 25 - THE FIRST RIDE

  • I have finished! It has taken 6 months but I am ready for my first ride. This is always a nervous time for me and even though it is my 3rd complete rebuild I feel the same. I have enjoyed renovating this 1150GS even though, as you have seen, I hit many problems. They are all behind me now and soon forgotten. The ride is just pure GS quality as if it has only just left the factory, not 19 years ago. Still a little too high for me, I am on the balls of my feet so not as comfortable as I like, having an RT has spoilt me for that. I read this week that men lose an inch in height between 40 and 70, there I was telling everyone I was a 30" inside leg and I am now a 29"...no wonder I had issues. But it is the same height on paper as the latest GS which is fine for me. The BMW salesman corrects me and explains that these older bikes had wider seats...aha so that is the problem. I loved riding this GS so much, apart from the height, I have ordered a new 1250GS to replace my RT. So sadly this beautiful bike is up for sale in the next few weeks.

Did exactly the same job, the previous owner stalled it for 8 years. Had 10k miles. It was like new ! I did all the maintenance en learn to drive and work on it. Love it. Now time for a real bike, the GS. Low budget. So I must choose what I buy. 1100 , 1150 or 1200 .... Very difficult ! Thanks for your beautiful video's. Sorry for my English, greets from Belgium. ✌

Morning Clive, thank you for your comment. I am really pleased with the end result, OK it took some time to get there and as you saw I hit a lot of unforeseen problems on the way. But I was doing this bike for myself so spared no expense, shocked myself when I added up all the receipts which I keep neatly filed. £2905.68....arghh...my wife is going to kill me. This folder is kept hidden on my shelf! However with my 29" inside leg it is still about an inch too high for me. A lot better than it was and the balls of my feet are on the floor. The height is the same as the latest GS models, but as I found the seats are much more narrow. Sat on a new 1250GS in the showroom yesterday with a standard seat on the lowest position and almost have my feet flat on the floor. So sadly I have to sell the 1150GS...sob sob, but because I have loved riding the GS again I have ordered a new 1250GS, trading in my RT, new bike arriving June 1st. I know I will lose a lot on this restoration project, when will I ever learn. If you are interested Clive email me: mrnormanhill@yahoo.co.uk

Hi Mark, Yes the 'extended, now painted black' side stand does touch the centre stand when they are both in the up position but it doesn't appear to cause any problems. I can now touch the floor with the balls of my feet but that is just not low enough to give me the confidence I need. The rear shock is brilliant, well everything is really including the lowered seat. I have been to the BMW dealer today, Alan Jeffires and sat on the 1250GS with the exactly the same seat height and guess what, my feet are almost flat on the floor...wonderful. It is as the salesman said, the early models of the GS had wider seats. Would not matter to anyone with a 31" inside leg, but with my 29" just too difficult for me. New 1250 Triple Black arrives June 1st. I will MOT the 1150GS, put it on eBay and lose a fortune. Why won't I ever learn!

    • @normski3091

Hi Graham, I tried the low chassis at BMW because a biker just turned up on one and he let me sit on it. Just a little too low. I visited rotherham on rt on early march they gave me a trade in figure against a used xr 2021 model. I went away and kept searching until low and behold a display bike s1000xr was there at chester on ebay no reg just used to display in showroom and it was £2500under the config price. So i nailed it. I put 3500 miles on but i found these issues 1. Too tall center of gravity very top heavy. 2 far too easy to stall fully loaded on incline. 3 footpegs in the way when feet down. 4 engine sounds like a load of bolts being shook in a tin. Also too much revving for me. I had kitted her out in shad luggage way cheaper than the bmw luggage. So i asked tony lembo at jeffries to just chuck me a trade in price to go up to a new gsa rallye with gold wheels and alarm heated seats. Full spec except the billet packs. He offered me £400 less than i paid 5 months earlier. As they say the rest is history and my new baby is called vikky. I found with my rt's i barely needed to moify anything and its same on my gsa. The xr was driving me mad trying to sort things. I wouldnt have the hill hold on due to it causing me to stall. Not so on the mighty gs i also like the new rt lovely bike. • @normski3091
      @normski3091  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi David, well I love the RT and also the GS. My idea was keeping my 2018RT for touring with my wife but having the GS for when I am riding on my own. But in the real world I finally realised that I would get to the end of a year and only one bike would have been used😱. This is exactly what happened to my riding mate Geoff. He had a 1250RT for going out with his wife and a new 800GS for IAM training and dingle riding. The RT was never used last year.
So if I can lower the rear foot pegs on the 1250GS and get the pillion seat lowered 30mm then on paper it is exactly the height of the RT. Maybe I can then convince my wife to return to GS riding…but will it work?
Cannot see any more big projects. It is way to expensive, costing £3000 to renovate a bike but only adding about £1000 onto the resale value😱🤷🏼‍♂️. So think it will be accessories from now on😩

Hi, how do you find the 1150 compared to the more modern GSs?
    1200 & 1250?

1150GS seat too wide, I could not reach the floor. Really dangerous for me with a 29” inside leg. 1250GS perfect 🤩

Do you still own the 1150GS. I'm just starting the process of restoring my 23 year old one.

Hi Adam, no I sold it to a collector the minute I finished building it. Just could not reach the ground, whatever I did😵‍💫. Bought a new 1250GS, no problem with that, apart from my wife hating the pillion ride😮.

what's next on your project list???

Well Phil I was building the 1150GS for my own use so the whole project has cost a lot. You cannot even cover the costs of doing up a bike like this and this has been my third one so I am dangerous waters from my wife to even think of another one!

@@normski3091 Thank you. I am satisfied with the hand drawing. I will change the clutch in a few days. I am very nervous. This is my first attempt. Any advice?

Hi Dongsik, I have found the centering tool I made, plus all the other ones for tapping the seals in. You are most welcome to them if they help. If you let me know your email I will send you pictures and a picture of the tool drawing. I live in Chesterfield in case you are close enough to collect. They are quite heavy but I could send them via Hermes. Just pay the delivery cost, you can have the tools free.
I have just looked at my Haynes manual for the 2010 GS and the tool drawing is exactly the same as the 2004-2007 GS, so it will work.
If you follow the Haynes manual very carefully you can do it.
If you do not have the manual you are welcome to mine, free of course, I can put it in the same box.
I have ordered a new 1250GS. Just finished the 2003 1150GS and I am not going to renovate anymore. It costs £3000 to rebuild a bike to a good standard so much too expensive for me to do it again.
