If the American office kept the British tone, it would’ve been cancelled way earlier. Edit: Thanks for all the likes! I had no clue that this comment had over 5k of them up until two weeks ago. I also wanted to add that both versions were good, but they were made for different audiences.
I think it's better that the UK is much shorter. I don't see the appeal of having hundreds of episodes, which lead to alot of hit or miss episodes. With less episodes the writers can get the jokes they want in and not drag it on for 5 years too long
it doesnt actually take place in scranton. the us office is filmed in LA if you google the building where the show is filmed you will find that its in LA
Um qualquer realism is the pull of a mockumentary, but both are quite believable in their own rights but objectively, the British one is more realistic

I think that Micheal is framed in a different way because we learn a lot about his childhood. He remembers every unhappy moment and talks about them. His mother accidentally kissed his butt, he had many miserable birthdays. In the show he’s trying to regain his childhood. He slowly ages from a 5 year old kid into an adult ready to move on in his relationship and also to move away from his childhood. Micheal says that he has always lived in Scranton and it’s only until Holly has to deal with serious issues (her father and mother aging) that he grows up. He leaves his friends behind, he leaves his old life behind. Micheal craves to be liked because when he was little he had countless friendship mishaps. Micheal shows a video of a T.V show where he was featured and when his younger self is asked what he wants he says friends. His own grandmother left him alone for a new friend. Micheal is somewhat aware of himself. He can switch from his camera personality (cheerful, naive, good natured) to his more realistic version where he is an adequate regional manager. When Micheal is on a sale he talks seriously and always has a plan. Micheal also wants to be famous, that’s why he plays it up for the cameras. He tried to act more funny so he comes across as the “cool” boss. He wants a big break.

I have to be honest, I resisted the US adaptation of The Office for a long time because I had such a fond memory of Gervais' version and such an affectionate nostalgia. When I finally got around to watching Carrell's version I found myself absolutely adoring it. I think both are brilliant examples of each culture's comedy at its best.
Wow. I never laughed out loud once at the US office, cringed many times , and saw almost every joke before it happened. UK Office I laughed out loud, cried, smiled, reflected on my life, and happily rewatched it three times. Gervais said it took him and Merchant one month to write 30mins of script. Whereas to churn out a tired sitcom for nine years, I wouldn't be surprised they write for one week to make a full show for the US Office. It's like comparing Macdonald's to a Gordon Ramsay meal

Or that you hate anything American? dk, but what I do know is that It's obvious you went into the US office not wanting to like it, so you ended up not liking it even though it's quality. The UK/US office's reminds me of the Messi/Ronaldo phenomena. Everyone has a preference to whose better, most appreciate both for their objective greatness, but a small toxic minority hate one because they absolutely adore the other and their 'prejudice' cements them in delusion. Maybe the US version is not your cup of tea, but if you go into it wanting to have a laugh (which should be the mentality for watching any comedy) you will not be disapointed

The Office was a unique show that almost perfected the mockumentary style. The US version is more like a sitcom, which is more uplifting and comforting. Both are very different in my opinion.
Dror Mizrachi in the us one, you’re laughing at the wacky jokes and situations they find themselves in, and the office is portrayed as a fun place to be. The uk office is much more dull and realistic in comparison, and most of the humour comes in David Brents pathetic attempts at comedy.
I think you kind of missed it when comparing David and Michael... They are much more similar than you make it out be.. One of the things that makes us stick with Michael is that even though he is insufferable... we all can see that Michael genuinely cares people and is actually really good at an essential part of his job... The way Michael views the office is like a family and even though he does and says awful things to them, he always finds his way back to the sentiment that he love them as family... Also he’s a terrific salesman.. he’s not just some incompetent fool running around doing God knows what... we see this for the first time in “The Client” when he excellently closes the massive deal for Dunder Mifflin that prevents downsizing at the Scranton branch... So really.. they are very similar and I’d probably venture to say, we see more of that humane side in Michael than we ever do in David in their respective versions
There are two moments that show michael does very good job at managing those people. 1. When Jim tries to make common birthday for everyone on one day and fails. He tells that to Michael who then says that he tried that many years ago but its impossible. 2. When the entire office waits for news if Dunder Mifflins goes bankrupt and they're all fired or not. Michael comes up with some game. After a while Jim tries to calm down Michael because he's scared about his job too. Michael then stops playing his funny character and being completly serious says: "Shut up and let them have their stupid game. That's all they got". It shows that michael really knows what he's doing. And that stupid, funny guy is just a character that he plays for his colleagues
Yeah, and he is always trying to prove himself as being the funniest or smartest guy in the room, which is why he’s always trying to tell jokes or mispronouncing words he doesn’t understand. He just wants to be liked and is delusional to the fact that he isn’t.
The British one is what it was meant to be. A fake documentary that actually feels like it’s in a British office. The American one is very theatrical and is clearly a tv programme

The US version is good at what it does, which is being a fun, lighthearted, quirky, feelgood comedy. But the UK version at times feels like a tragedy, and the subtle humour is second to none.
Didn’t watch the american version for years cause I was so faithful to the British one, but I’m glad I did cause they both definitely need to be appreciated with two different mindsets. You need to realise that British comedy is sarcastic-heavy and we take joy from this because we can relate to what we watch - whereas with american sitcoms, they prefer to watch situations they aspire to have.

@@JaKingScomez obviously they are both different and good in their own ways. Many people from the US miss sarcasm or jokes that are more subtle. That's why the US version changed to be more fast paced and upbeat with a more sitcom feeling. They just don't get British humor like we do. Every time I've watched someone from the US react to British humor, they always say aloud and explain the joke they've just laughed at, like every time they have to explain what they've had to figure out. If the joke isn't in front of them to laugh at, it's instantly less funny for them (stereotypically though none the less true)

Also, they have a short attention span, so they get bored watching British office. I believe the British version has a target audience of more adults while American office tried to make it fun for everyone.

Exactly. I work in an office and we know all of those characters in some form. Its the perfect depiction but obviously funnier. But they capture the monotony, the 'why even bother' the 'Im working with a bunch of fucking morons' frustration, all perfectly captured through Tims eyes.
I know I may be commenting late but I am a Teenager and Love the UK Office more. I am British and UK comedy for me is way more funny. I also live in a place just like Slough so it is quite realistic for me.
With you analysis of Michael I’d say you were right about him being a little more extra than David, but you described David exactly how Michael is in the US version too. He says and does racist and sexist stuff on accident trying to funny or connect with his coworkers too. He also is a man that wants friends but has none. They actually show this in an episode where he goes to an improv class and messes it up and nobody likes him so he crashes his coworkers party that everyone in the office but him was invited to. He also shows great moments like David playing the guitar. He does incredible business deals out of nowhere and it shows that he is an actual competent and good businessman. I feel like you didn’t do a good enough analysis of Michael seeing how you even said that you needed your girlfriends opinion on it. I’m not trying to be rude. I’m just giving constructive criticism.
I can understand why he didn't waste too much time on him - in most respects MIchael is just another american sitcom character, waiting for a laugh track so the audience will know what to do. Rather than comedic though, David is more cringingly tragic than comedic, something an american show would never have the confidence to do I suspect (that is probably simply because US network shows survive on ratings while BBC shows really don't) - David shows just enough positives that you know he could be better but tragically never really will be. Much of UK humour is about pathos, rather than slapstick.
Michael has this air (even early on) where everyone hates him but almost in an affectionate way, and then by the end that's barely even applicable. Whereas David is just a prick who everyone genuinely despises
@@yeezy7367 He's a good character by the standards of his genre, no doubt, but what the OP is saying is that the US wouldn't tolerate a character who didn't have an arc and closure like David. They wouldn't see the humour in a character who people genuinely hate and never really gets better. A lot of UK comedy sort of keeps you on the edge where you hope people will get better, but you are ultimately more satisfied by the fact they do not. It makes you want to laugh and cry at the same time, it seems more true to life. Michael's arc is great in the opposite way, giving closure and catharsis. But while 'generic' is a bit harsh, that's sort of what all good sitcom characters have, so he's not really different than a lot of others. But you could certainly argue the same about David and characters like Mark and Jeremy from Peep Show- the UK is just as conventional, just in a different way.
When I was a kid I loved the US version. Now I like the UK version better. I think the UK version's humor is the type you learn to appreciate over time
I've never seen The Office UK (and after this video I kind of want to), but I'd just like to pitch in about something about The Office USA. One of my favorite aspects about the show is how it can be a colorful ride filled with laughter and jokes and whatnot, but every now and then there's actual serious moments that show these characters in a new light. We see them being genuine, caring, and just human in general. This personally allows me to connect with the characters and enjoy them even more than before
If you like seeing characters being caring and a show filled with laughter then the UK office probably isn't for you. It's a fantastic show with really deep, layered comedy, but I find myself wanting to cringe and turn it off moreso than I want to laugh out loud.

You probably illustrated my biggest gripe with US Office all the characters are arbitrarily likeable in an attempt to make them more human and relatable I find them less human because of it, What puts people of the UK office is how cold distant and blunt the characters are adds to the reality documentary approach, I can relate to that so much more having worked in that environment it comes across as more realistic and as such more humorous.
Apocris try episode 1. It has everything great about the office in it, and is hilarious, but will also test out the cringe waters to see if you can put up with it. I love it, but I do have to be in a certain mood to enjoy it- ie I can’t switch it on when I come home in the evenings!

Triple A It gets amazing, stick with it. Seasons 3 is one of the funniest things I've ever watched. UK was good, but hasn't aged all that well. The US version was incredible at times, but the last 2 seasons weren't quite as good. Overall. UK: 8.2/10 US: 8.8/10

For me, everything you need to know about these two shows is in the lighting. The British one is lit like an actual office. The American one is lit like an office set for a TV show

As an Australian (someone non-biased) I slightly prefer the American version. With that being said, I highly appreciate both versions and find them both almost equally funny and entertaining in their own ways.

The US version yeah the first few was copied then they made it their own the actors was more entertaining even if it was copied. I actually cant get into The Office UK. It's too drab, too depressing, and Ricky Gervais has always rubbed me the wrong way. Don't get me wrong, I recognize that the show is great, but The Office US is my taste. It's cheerful, happy and hopeful. Michael makes me feel good. He's a socially awkward weirdo, and I like that. Is it cringy? Sometimes, but he manages to be so likeable I don't care. That isn't even getting started on how much more I love Jim and Pam.
Whole video: the UK Office is much more well rounded and realistic and relatable while the US Office is goofy and light-hearted. Conclusion: they're both iconic shows!
I appreciate your comparison between Michael and David, but I don't really understand why you went so in depth into a scene from the first episode of both shows. You said it yourself that the US version quickly adapted and changed drastically from the British one, yet you compare a scene from the very first episode? The shows are very different, and while I do prefer the American version mostly because I like the characters better, I know they're both good in their own separate ways.
People liked my other in depth comparisons of scenes in the Inbetweeners, so I figured I'd throw in a quick one at the end to sort of highlight what problems I felt the earlier episodes had (and also why heavily borrowing from the original script does a disservice, as it also did with the Inbetweeners.) So yes, the American Office quickly changed for the better, but it wasn't without a small learning curve at the start.
JackWolf I just felt you seemed to use it to show why the UK version is superior, when it may have been fairer to compare scenes later on in the shows. But I understand your point now.
Comparing scenes from later in the show wouldn't be very easy considering how different they are. It would basically be me saying "This is good, and this is also good." It wasnt my intention to make the UK show look better, I just wanted to highlight the problems of straight-up remaking. The main thing I attempted to communicate in this video was that I think both shows are great.
A lot of the things that were said about David could be said about Micheal. The way he thinks of himself as a funny guy and often makes jokes that turn out for an awkward situation. He even said once that everyone says that he's the funniest guy in the office. Micheal is as you described David but with the childish twist as well. Also Micheal is revealed to be a good hockey player, similar to David's guitar. I'd say that the Office US captures the same sense of realism in the first few seasons.
Ben Klein 100% agreed. When he was describing David in my head I kept saying "That's exactly how I would describe Michael". I think his biases made him miss the point slightly there. Because all of those same flaws and goals apply to both characters
I'll admit that I did not have a full knowledge of Michael's character and his entire story. With David Brent there's only 13 episodes which a lot easier to watch than 139. I probably watched about 60 episodes of the Office US, ending a few episodes after Jim and Pam starting dating. I felt it was fitting to stop there since we're presented with the same scenario (Tim and Dawn) at the end of the UK Office. From what I saw, I think there are definitely similarities between the two. However Michael strikes me as a more likable person, and a happier one. With David I get this insanely strong feeling, like buried below all this facade is a man that is scared, lonely, and doesn't know to escape. This is simply what I, and the two people I asked, observed and felt from the show. I know I missed things, but I'm just a young dude making videos for fun.
JackWolf I like your description of David here and I would also argue that it pretty much exactly applies to Michael as well. I’d say the two characters are very much the same, but that the difference is in the lense that you see each of the characters through. David is seen in a pessimistic, hopeless light, whereas Michael is seen much more hopefully. He’s lonely, sad and desperate but you have hope that maybe he’ll be okay one day.
i thought the US version jello prank was pretty funny. i don't really get what he's saying about Jim's jello container not working as well as Tim's jello cubes because the container works just as well as a hint imo. the accuracy might be a shred less, but it doesn't ruin the joke in the least.

Finally someone that sees it for what it is, thought I was going mad reading through idiot comments saying US Office is better. Even though it copied and milked every bit of writing and scenes almost word for word that The Office UK had done, yet somehow made them unfunny. I literally feel my brain cells dying as I watch shows like that
The two shows function very differently. The UK version was never meant to stretch out over a long period of time; it has a specific beginning and a more planned ending, whereas the US version stretched out for almost a decade (it was definitely milked). This makes the UK version more of a neat story, whereas the US version is multiple separate instances strung together and written as the show runs (like a Friends kind of situation). In this way, the US version caters more to its fan base, whereas the UK version is like a long movie. This is evident in the fact that nearly every episode of the US version has an uplifting ending, whereas, in the UK version, the uplifting part is in only the very last episode.

Okay guys let me make something transparent. This video is obviously influenced by my personal opinion. I'm not some mega famous film critic, I'm just a guy trying to have fun on TH-cam. I do happen to find the UK Office more impressive. That doesn't mean I hate the American version, or think it's dumbed down. They each have a different type of comedy. Was I the most qualified person to make a video on this matter? No, but as I said earlier, I'm just doing this for fun. People were interested in seeing my thoughts and I was interested in the topic. If you far prefer the American Office, that's great! Go rewatch it and have fun, it's a brilliant show! Don't take my analysis as a personal attack on your opinion.

This was brilliantly explained! I absolutely love the Office UK. I think Ricky Gervais is incredibly talented and can sometimes be extremely underrated. The way he makes situations seem so cringeworthy and others you feel so sympathetic towards him is absolutely incredible. Comedy genius.
I tried watching the UK version and there are times when it’s brilliant but most of time it’s like...going to work. The US version is far superior in terms of entertainment...although less realistic.
I'd actually say the U.S. office is far more realistic in terms of its portrayal of an office. Generally they aren't that drab, and peoples interactions seem much more authentic to what I see everyday. So you get both the realism and the extreme behavior comedy for the escapism. Its a win win.
To me, Michael is tragically and unhealthily attached to Todd. I haven't watched enough of The Office (UK) to make a judgment of which (if either) is *better* but I prefer The Office (US). Michael has one of the best series arcs of any character I've seen.

It's the UK office for me. Every episode is just crammed with attention to detail, tiny little things that just add to the moments. David Brent is the most multi layered character in sitcom history. It was also brave to try comedy of that style. The American office is a good sitcom, one of the best of it's era. I just feel like it's a compromise and too like just any other sitcom at times. It also went on for at least two seasons too long. It's an impressive achievement nonetheless.
Always hated on the American version before seeing the light and giving it a watch. Now love it and have watched every episode though a few times. Love both. Can't hate on either now.
littleferrhis - The American version has a lot more _obvious_ humor, The UK version can be hilarious at times but you’ve got to be paying attention, it’s very layered... I guess it’s a bit like comparing Shawn of the Dead to Scary Movie, both are comedy horror movies but funny in different ways.

I’m not sure if it’s better written. All the characters are really boring. Brent is funny sometimes but comes across as a douche. M Scott is goofy but likable. Jim and Pam are charismatic, and all the characters outside of the main bunch are quirky but likable. I don’t like watching a show where I don’t like any of the characters. It was tough getting thru all 14 episodes of UK, where getting thru 9 seasons (24 episodes each) were enjoyable
But the original The Office was supposed to feel real. It wasn't about introducing audiences to likable characters. If something is really well written and performed then I don't care how likable the characters are. How many people would you meet at the workplace who you would describe as really likable or charismatic? And when you're stuck in a drab office environment 5 days a week your personality probably isn't going to shine through anyway.

They're both hilarious in their own situational/regional ways but I'm set on the UK version. It almost truly perfects a mockumentary of an office life/environment that so many of us relate to. I've had many managers like David and many colleagues like Dawn and Tim lol
Yes this is why I can't watch the British version, the first point. The US Office has its banal bits but the British version makes me feel like I need an anti-depressant. What I find interesting is that it looks like they split David's character. Michael is sort of a joke as a musician with his ukelele but Andy was incompetent while being a great musician.
lets be honest though the 2nd season of the US office is what really found the changes between the uk and the us versions. the first season of the US version looked like it was really undeveloped and was still confused on show they are trying to make. and because of that the first season feels like a whole different version itself.
The US version is like McDonald's: convenient, easily accessible, I'm always down for it, any time, anywhere. The UK version is like a gourmet meal: More complex, you have to take your time, it's not something you'd have every day but when you do it's amazing. I love both shows, for the record.
There’s a lot of arguing in the comments. Both shows are objectively great. 10/10 shows. Both shows are very different. If you started by watching the US version you have to strip yourself of everything you know heading into the UK version. Don’t look at Gareth and think of Dwight. Appreciate his character for his character. It’s so important to be open minded and patient when transitioning to the UK version because the style is so dramatically different. Imo the UK version is better but if you prefer the US version that is a perfectly fine opinion providing you actually gave the UK version a shot before writing it off because it’s different to the US version of comedy.

Tbh I haven’t watched the uk version but I give it props, I love the American version at heart, it is light hearted but you do get emotionally attached to he characters and there are times when it’s sad and depressing, it’s just not the core of the show, but gotta say I wanna watch the original now
The thing I love so much about the guitar scene is that they could have easily made him terrible at it, but they didn't. He's not god-awful, but rather he's singing about things that he has no knowledge or understanding of, talking about driving around and chasing the 'American dream', picking up women, and being all cool. It's such a contrast from his actual life and pretty subtle considering they could've just had him gone mad. It's brilliant.
Us version will have you laughing more. Uk version has you experienced a much more varied range of emotion. One is a light sitcom the other a deeper engaging watch. Depends on the individual preference.
For me the US version has a much wider range of emotions and nuances. I’m pretty sure we all just relate better to what’s more familiar to us. Doesn’t make sense to judge the other version as anything but what you yourself experience.

It really does come down to preference, as cliché as it is. I really loved the true mockumentary style of the Office UK. It's supposed to be a realistic portrayal of the tedium of office culture. That's why you're not supposed to always laugh during the episodes. It's a lot more about people being stuck doing something they don't want to do in a place they don't want to be. In a lot of ways, you can't just watch a single episode of the Office UK if you want to really want to get the most out of it; the progression of the characters is largely why the show is held in such regard. At the end of the show, all main characters (except for Gareth) have truly changed and become happy. You need to watch the arc of the characters to get the most out of it. The fact that there are only 13 episodes of the Office UK means that interactions in each episode have way more repercussions on the following episode than anything in the Office US. There's simply no time for filler when you only have 13 episodes. In general, that's a massive difference between British comedy shows and American ones: British ones generally know when to call it quits. You can argue that some have quit too soon, like Fawlty Towers, The Office, Extras, The Young Ones or Inbetweeners. In retrospect, however, this raises the episodes and the series to a higher level simply because the shows are so condensed. Imagine Fawlty Towers lasting 7 seasons. How often could we really have seen John Cleese act like an absolute madman before it got tedious? One of the only British comedies that was able to do a lot of seasons and stay great was Peep Show, and that was just because the premise of that show and the chemistry between Robert Webb and David Mitchell was that fantastic. All this makes that British comedies skim along the edges of tragedy and drama so much closer than most American comedies. The only American comedy I can think of that is able to transformatively merge tragedy, drama, and comedy is Louie, and I think that's off the air for good now. Those episodes where he was training to be the next Letterman had some of the funniest scenes I've ever seen. It does mean that specific episodes in the Office US are a lot more rewatchable than any specific episode from the Office UK. You can enjoy a lot of episodes from the Office US without necessarily knowing all the nuances of the characters and their relationships with each other. It's a lot more obvious and played up for laughs. That's not a bad thing at all; in this case, in fact, it's a good thing because it means you can essentially watch the Office US in any order you want and still enjoy it a lot. With the Office UK, you can't really do that. If you want to get the most out of it, you have to watch the whole thing, in order. Or at least a season's worth of episodes per time you watch it. So yeah, whichever you prefer is the one that is better. It's a bad comparison to make because the shows ended up being so completely distinct from one another. I think a better comparison between shows would be the Office UK vs Trailer Park Boys. Those are two shows that have a lot more in common (even though TPB is obviously way more over the top). Conclusion: The Office US has more rewatchable episodes and is more outlandishly funny without being tied to character interaction, the Office UK has a much more satisfying overall arc and more realistic interactions between characters that drives the comedy. In the Office UK, the humor is the tragedy. In the Office US, the humor is the comedy.
I’m British and I absolutely love both of them but for two different reasons. The British one is relatable and quite if you understand it funny while the American one is relaxing and also funny to watch.
Well this video mainly focuses on The Office US SEASON 1 vs The Office UK... which is not interesting at all. Why would you chose to focus on the only US season that had its hands tied instead of choosing seasons and moments where it made its own creative decisions... in the end those are the moments that define what the American version was.
Because the uk office wasn’t as long as the US office and this video is comparing them, helps to compare with similar plots. He said several times in the video that the US one went on to do its own thing. UK only had 3 seasons and 6 episodes per season. US had 9 seasons and like 20-30 eps per season, because Americans love to drag and milk their good shows. UK always keep their sitcoms nice and short, barring a few.

An important difference to point out between the characters of the two shows is that in the US version, you're meant to like most if not every single character, while in the U.K. version, you're supposed to feel almost indifferent to most of the characters. You would like some characters in the U.K. version better than others, but not extremely. This explains why fans of the US version often put characters up on a pedestal, saying things like it's got Dwight, Michael, or creed, while fans of the U.K. version don't usually show that much excitement over one character (not as often or overtly anyway), probably because of fewer moments of redemption as mentioned in the video. Both shows are great obviously because they both did so well. Awesome analysis btw! I think it's very well done :) Credit: I've watched both shows twice.
I love both versions but I love The Office UK more because it's grounded and very relatable to my life. Watching David Brent stand up for himself is just so satisfying.
Yeah I agree. The American version is something you can just sit back and watch for a quick laugh to forget about life for a bit. Whereas the UK one is much deeper and requires more thinking to understand. Like at 6:58 and 7:09, it happens quickly and might pass over Americans heads.

I think it's better that the UK is much shorter. I don't see the appeal of having hundreds of episodes, which lead to alot of hit or miss episodes. With less episodes the writers can get the jokes they want in and not drag it on for 5 years too long

I think that Micheal is framed in a different way because we learn a lot about his childhood. He remembers every unhappy moment and talks about them. His mother accidentally kissed his butt, he had many miserable birthdays. In the show he’s trying to regain his childhood. He slowly ages from a 5 year old kid into an adult ready to move on in his relationship and also to move away from his childhood. Micheal says that he has always lived in Scranton and it’s only until Holly has to deal with serious issues (her father and mother aging) that he grows up. He leaves his friends behind, he leaves his old life behind.
Micheal craves to be liked because when he was little he had countless friendship mishaps. Micheal shows a video of a T.V show where he was featured and when his younger self is asked what he wants he says friends. His own grandmother left him alone for a new friend.
Micheal is somewhat aware of himself. He can switch from his camera personality (cheerful, naive, good natured) to his more realistic version where he is an adequate regional manager. When Micheal is on a sale he talks seriously and always has a plan. Micheal also wants to be famous, that’s why he plays it up for the cameras. He tried to act more funny so he comes across as the “cool” boss. He wants a big break.

I have to be honest, I resisted the US adaptation of The Office for a long time because I had such a fond memory of Gervais' version and such an affectionate nostalgia. When I finally got around to watching Carrell's version I found myself absolutely adoring it. I think both are brilliant examples of each culture's comedy at its best.
Wow. I never laughed out loud once at the US office, cringed many times , and saw almost every joke before it happened. UK Office I laughed out loud, cried, smiled, reflected on my life, and happily rewatched it three times. Gervais said it took him and Merchant one month to write 30mins of script. Whereas to churn out a tired sitcom for nine years, I wouldn't be surprised they write for one week to make a full show for the US Office. It's like comparing Macdonald's to a Gordon Ramsay meal

Or that you hate anything American? dk, but what I do know is that It's obvious you went into the US office not wanting to like it, so you ended up not liking it even though it's quality. The UK/US office's reminds me of the Messi/Ronaldo phenomena. Everyone has a preference to whose better, most appreciate both for their objective greatness, but a small toxic minority hate one because they absolutely adore the other and their 'prejudice' cements them in delusion. Maybe the US version is not your cup of tea, but if you go into it wanting to have a laugh (which should be the mentality for watching any comedy) you will not be disapointed

I think you kind of missed it when comparing David and Michael... They are much more similar than you make it out be.. One of the things that makes us stick with Michael is that even though he is insufferable... we all can see that Michael genuinely cares people and is actually really good at an essential part of his job... The way Michael views the office is like a family and even though he does and says awful things to them, he always finds his way back to the sentiment that he love them as family... Also he’s a terrific salesman.. he’s not just some incompetent fool running around doing God knows what... we see this for the first time in “The Client” when he excellently closes the massive deal for Dunder Mifflin that prevents downsizing at the Scranton branch...
So really.. they are very similar and I’d probably venture to say, we see more of that humane side in Michael than we ever do in David in their respective versions
There are two moments that show michael does very good job at managing those people.
1. When Jim tries to make common birthday for everyone on one day and fails. He tells that to Michael who then says that he tried that many years ago but its impossible.
2. When the entire office waits for news if Dunder Mifflins goes bankrupt and they're all fired or not. Michael comes up with some game. After a while Jim tries to calm down Michael because he's scared about his job too. Michael then stops playing his funny character and being completly serious says: "Shut up and let them have their stupid game. That's all they got". It shows that michael really knows what he's doing. And that stupid, funny guy is just a character that he plays for his colleagues
Yeah, and he is always trying to prove himself as being the funniest or smartest guy in the room, which is why he’s always trying to tell jokes or mispronouncing words he doesn’t understand. He just wants to be liked and is delusional to the fact that he isn’t.

This is the perfect summarization. A lot of other comments here don't recognize this as the main difference. It's not about being better than the other but rather a short, to the point structural overview, that clearly differentiates the two.

The US version is good at what it does, which is being a fun, lighthearted, quirky, feelgood comedy. But the UK version at times feels like a tragedy, and the subtle humour is second to none.

Didn’t watch the american version for years cause I was so faithful to the British one, but I’m glad I did cause they both definitely need to be appreciated with two different mindsets.
You need to realise that British comedy is sarcastic-heavy and we take joy from this because we can relate to what we watch - whereas with american sitcoms, they prefer to watch situations they aspire to have.
Exactly! British humour is often critical, sarcastic, or dark. American humour is more light-hearted, joyous, and hopeful. Both are great and both have amazing potential, they just need to be played right, and both the UK and US Office did exactly that.

@@JaKingScomez obviously they are both different and good in their own ways. Many people from the US miss sarcasm or jokes that are more subtle. That's why the US version changed to be more fast paced and upbeat with a more sitcom feeling. They just don't get British humor like we do. Every time I've watched someone from the US react to British humor, they always say aloud and explain the joke they've just laughed at, like every time they have to explain what they've had to figure out. If the joke isn't in front of them to laugh at, it's instantly less funny for them (stereotypically though none the less true)

Exactly. I work in an office and we know all of those characters in some form. Its the perfect depiction but obviously funnier. But they capture the monotony, the 'why even bother' the 'Im working with a bunch of fucking morons' frustration, all perfectly captured through Tims eyes.

With you analysis of Michael I’d say you were right about him being a little more extra than David, but you described David exactly how Michael is in the US version too. He says and does racist and sexist stuff on accident trying to funny or connect with his coworkers too. He also is a man that wants friends but has none. They actually show this in an episode where he goes to an improv class and messes it up and nobody likes him so he crashes his coworkers party that everyone in the office but him was invited to. He also shows great moments like David playing the guitar. He does incredible business deals out of nowhere and it shows that he is an actual competent and good businessman. I feel like you didn’t do a good enough analysis of Michael seeing how you even said that you needed your girlfriends opinion on it. I’m not trying to be rude. I’m just giving constructive criticism.

I can understand why he didn't waste too much time on him - in most respects MIchael is just another american sitcom character, waiting for a laugh track so the audience will know what to do. Rather than comedic though, David is more cringingly tragic than comedic, something an american show would never have the confidence to do I suspect (that is probably simply because US network shows survive on ratings while BBC shows really don't) - David shows just enough positives that you know he could be better but tragically never really will be. Much of UK humour is about pathos, rather than slapstick.
Michael has this air (even early on) where everyone hates him but almost in an affectionate way, and then by the end that's barely even applicable. Whereas David is just a prick who everyone genuinely despises
@@yeezy7367 He's a good character by the standards of his genre, no doubt, but what the OP is saying is that the US wouldn't tolerate a character who didn't have an arc and closure like David. They wouldn't see the humour in a character who people genuinely hate and never really gets better. A lot of UK comedy sort of keeps you on the edge where you hope people will get better, but you are ultimately more satisfied by the fact they do not. It makes you want to laugh and cry at the same time, it seems more true to life. Michael's arc is great in the opposite way, giving closure and catharsis. But while 'generic' is a bit harsh, that's sort of what all good sitcom characters have, so he's not really different than a lot of others. But you could certainly argue the same about David and characters like Mark and Jeremy from Peep Show- the UK is just as conventional, just in a different way.

I've never seen The Office UK (and after this video I kind of want to), but I'd just like to pitch in about something about The Office USA. One of my favorite aspects about the show is how it can be a colorful ride filled with laughter and jokes and whatnot, but every now and then there's actual serious moments that show these characters in a new light. We see them being genuine, caring, and just human in general. This personally allows me to connect with the characters and enjoy them even more than before
If you like seeing characters being caring and a show filled with laughter then the UK office probably isn't for you. It's a fantastic show with really deep, layered comedy, but I find myself wanting to cringe and turn it off moreso than I want to laugh out loud.

You probably illustrated my biggest gripe with US Office all the characters are arbitrarily likeable in an attempt to make them more human and relatable I find them less human because of it, What puts people of the UK office is how cold distant and blunt the characters are adds to the reality documentary approach, I can relate to that so much more having worked in that environment it comes across as more realistic and as such more humorous.
Apocris try episode 1. It has everything great about the office in it, and is hilarious, but will also test out the cringe waters to see if you can put up with it. I love it, but I do have to be in a certain mood to enjoy it- ie I can’t switch it on when I come home in the evenings!

For me, everything you need to know about these two shows is in the lighting. The British one is lit like an actual office. The American one is lit like an office set for a TV show

I actually cant get into The Office UK. It's too drab, too depressing, and Ricky Gervais has always rubbed me the wrong way. Don't get me wrong, I recognize that the show is great, but The Office US is my taste. It's cheerful, happy and hopeful. Michael makes me feel good. He's a socially awkward weirdo, and I like that. Is it cringy? Sometimes, but he manages to be so likeable I don't care. That isn't even getting started on how much more I love Jim and Pam.
To be fair you have to have a very high IQ to understand the UK office. The humour is extremely subtle.

I appreciate your comparison between Michael and David, but I don't really understand why you went so in depth into a scene from the first episode of both shows. You said it yourself that the US version quickly adapted and changed drastically from the British one, yet you compare a scene from the very first episode? The shows are very different, and while I do prefer the American version mostly because I like the characters better, I know they're both good in their own separate ways.
People liked my other in depth comparisons of scenes in the Inbetweeners, so I figured I'd throw in a quick one at the end to sort of highlight what problems I felt the earlier episodes had (and also why heavily borrowing from the original script does a disservice, as it also did with the Inbetweeners.) So yes, the American Office quickly changed for the better, but it wasn't without a small learning curve at the start.
JackWolf I just felt you seemed to use it to show why the UK version is superior, when it may have been fairer to compare scenes later on in the shows. But I understand your point now.
Comparing scenes from later in the show wouldn't be very easy considering how different they are. It would basically be me saying "This is good, and this is also good." It wasnt my intention to make the UK show look better, I just wanted to highlight the problems of straight-up remaking. The main thing I attempted to communicate in this video was that I think both shows are great.

A lot of the things that were said about David could be said about Micheal. The way he thinks of himself as a funny guy and often makes jokes that turn out for an awkward situation. He even said once that everyone says that he's the funniest guy in the office. Micheal is as you described David but with the childish twist as well. Also Micheal is revealed to be a good hockey player, similar to David's guitar. I'd say that the Office US captures the same sense of realism in the first few seasons.
Ben Klein 100% agreed. When he was describing David in my head I kept saying "That's exactly how I would describe Michael". I think his biases made him miss the point slightly there. Because all of those same flaws and goals apply to both characters
I'll admit that I did not have a full knowledge of Michael's character and his entire story. With David Brent there's only 13 episodes which a lot easier to watch than 139. I probably watched about 60 episodes of the Office US, ending a few episodes after Jim and Pam starting dating. I felt it was fitting to stop there since we're presented with the same scenario (Tim and Dawn) at the end of the UK Office.
From what I saw, I think there are definitely similarities between the two. However Michael strikes me as a more likable person, and a happier one. With David I get this insanely strong feeling, like buried below all this facade is a man that is scared, lonely, and doesn't know to escape. This is simply what I, and the two people I asked, observed and felt from the show. I know I missed things, but I'm just a young dude making videos for fun.
JackWolf I like your description of David here and I would also argue that it pretty much exactly applies to Michael as well. I’d say the two characters are very much the same, but that the difference is in the lense that you see each of the characters through. David is seen in a pessimistic, hopeless light, whereas Michael is seen much more hopefully. He’s lonely, sad and desperate but you have hope that maybe he’ll be okay one day.

I actually loved the American adaptation of the scene. It’s not as funny in the moment, but once u think about it it becomes way funnier.
i thought the US version jello prank was pretty funny. i don't really get what he's saying about Jim's jello container not working as well as Tim's jello cubes because the container works just as well as a hint imo. the accuracy might be a shred less, but it doesn't ruin the joke in the least.

Finally someone that sees it for what it is, thought I was going mad reading through idiot comments saying US Office is better. Even though it copied and milked every bit of writing and scenes almost word for word that The Office UK had done, yet somehow made them unfunny. I literally feel my brain cells dying as I watch shows like that
The two shows function very differently. The UK version was never meant to stretch out over a long period of time; it has a specific beginning and a more planned ending, whereas the US version stretched out for almost a decade (it was definitely milked). This makes the UK version more of a neat story, whereas the US version is multiple separate instances strung together and written as the show runs (like a Friends kind of situation). In this way, the US version caters more to its fan base, whereas the UK version is like a long movie. This is evident in the fact that nearly every episode of the US version has an uplifting ending, whereas, in the UK version, the uplifting part is in only the very last episode.
Trang Nguyen One part I didn’t like about US show was that the first couple of seasons were just individual episodes. Fixed itself around the end of season 2 tho and there was a small plot developing

Okay guys let me make something transparent. This video is obviously influenced by my personal opinion. I'm not some mega famous film critic, I'm just a guy trying to have fun on TH-cam. I do happen to find the UK Office more impressive. That doesn't mean I hate the American version, or think it's dumbed down. They each have a different type of comedy.
Was I the most qualified person to make a video on this matter? No, but as I said earlier, I'm just doing this for fun. People were interested in seeing my thoughts and I was interested in the topic. It's the UK office for me. Every episode is just crammed with attention to detail, tiny little things that just add to the moments. David Brent is the most multi layered character in sitcom history. It was also brave to try comedy of that style.
The American office is a good sitcom, one of the best of it's era. I just feel like it's a compromise and too like just any other sitcom at times. It also went on for at least two seasons too long. It's an impressive achievement nonetheless.
The Larry Sanders Show did everything before The Office. Don't get me wrong, The Office is a great sitcom but its not as "brave" as you think.

I’m not sure if it’s better written. All the characters are really boring. Brent is funny sometimes but comes across as a douche. M Scott is goofy but likable. Jim and Pam are charismatic, and all the characters outside of the main bunch are quirky but likable. I don’t like watching a show where I don’t like any of the characters. It was tough getting thru all 14 episodes of UK, where getting thru 9 seasons (24 episodes each) were enjoyable

If something is really well written and performed then I don't care how likable the characters are. How many people would you meet at the workplace who you would describe as really likable or charismatic? And when you're stuck in a drab office environment 5 days a week your personality probably isn't going to shine through anyway.

They're both hilarious in their own situational/regional ways but I'm set on the UK version. It almost truly perfects a mockumentary of an office life/environment that so many of us relate to. I've had many managers like David and many colleagues like Dawn and Tim lol
Yes this is why I can't watch the British version, the first point. The US Office has its banal bits but the British version makes me feel like I need an anti-depressant. What I find interesting is that it looks like they split David's character. Michael is sort of a joke as a musician with his ukelele but Andy was incompetent while being a great musician.

the first season of the US version looked like it was really undeveloped and was still confused on show they are trying to make. and because of that the first season feels like a whole different version itself.

There’s a lot of arguing in the comments. Both shows are objectively great. 10/10 shows. Both shows are very different. If you started by watching the US version you have to strip yourself of everything you know heading into the UK version. Don’t look at Gareth and think of Dwight. Appreciate his character for his character. It’s so important to be open minded and patient when transitioning to the UK version because the style is so dramatically different. Imo the UK version is better but if you prefer the US version that is a perfectly fine opinion providing you actually gave the UK version a shot before writing it off because it’s different to the US version of comedy.

Tbh I haven’t watched the uk version but I give it props, I love the American version at heart, it is light hearted but you do get emotionally attached to he characters and there are times when it’s sad and depressing, it’s just not the core of the show, but gotta say I wanna watch the original now
The uk office gets funnier each time I see it. You pick up on more and more stuff
The thing I love so much about the guitar scene is that they could have easily made him terrible at it, but they didn't. He's not god-awful, but rather he's singing about things that he has no knowledge or understanding of, talking about driving around and chasing the 'American dream', picking up women, and being all cool. It's such a contrast from his actual life and pretty subtle considering they could've just had him gone mad. It's brilliant.

For me the US version has a much wider range of emotions and nuances. I’m pretty sure we all just relate better to what’s more familiar to us. Doesn’t make sense to judge the other version as anything but what you yourself experience.

It really does come down to preference, as cliché as it is. I really loved the true mockumentary style of the Office UK. It's supposed to be a realistic portrayal of the tedium of office culture. That's why you're not supposed to always laugh during the episodes. It's a lot more about people being stuck doing something they don't want to do in a place they don't want to be. In a lot of ways, you can't just watch a single episode of the Office UK if you want to really want to get the most out of it; the progression of the characters is largely why the show is held in such regard. At the end of the show, all main characters (except for Gareth) have truly changed and become happy.
You need to watch the arc of the characters to get the most out of it. The fact that there are only 13 episodes of the Office UK means that interactions in each episode have way more repercussions on the following episode than anything in the Office US. There's simply no time for filler when you only have 13 episodes. In general, that's a massive difference between British comedy shows and American ones: British ones generally know when to call it quits. You can argue that some have quit too soon, like Fawlty Towers, The Office, Extras, The Young Ones or Inbetweeners.
In retrospect, however, this raises the episodes and the series to a higher level simply because the shows are so condensed. Imagine Fawlty Towers lasting 7 seasons. How often could we really have seen John Cleese act like an absolute madman before it got tedious? One of the only British comedies that was able to do a lot of seasons and stay great was Peep Show, and that was just because the premise of that show and the chemistry between Robert Webb and David Mitchell was that fantastic.
All this makes that British comedies skim along the edges of tragedy and drama so much closer than most American comedies. The only American comedy I can think of that is able to transformatively merge tragedy, drama, and comedy is Louie, and I think that's off the air for good now. Those episodes where he was training to be the next Letterman had some of the funniest scenes I've ever seen.
It does mean that specific episodes in the Office US are a lot more rewatchable than any specific episode from the Office UK. You can enjoy a lot of episodes from the Office US without necessarily knowing all the nuances of the characters and their relationships with each other. It's a lot more obvious and played up for laughs. That's not a bad thing at all; in this case, in fact, it's a good thing because it means you can essentially watch the Office US in any order you want and still enjoy it a lot. With the Office UK, you can't really do that. If you want to get the most out of it, you have to watch the whole thing, in order. Or at least a season's worth of episodes per time you watch it.
So yeah, whichever you prefer is the one that is better. It's a bad comparison to make because the shows ended up being so completely distinct from one another. I think a better comparison between shows would be the Office UK vs Trailer Park Boys. Those are two shows that have a lot more in common (even though TPB is obviously way more over the top).
Conclusion: The Office US has more rewatchable episodes and is more outlandishly funny without being tied to character interaction, the Office UK has a much more satisfying overall arc and more realistic interactions between characters that drives the comedy. In the Office UK, the humor is the tragedy. In the Office US, the humor is the comedy.

I’m British and I absolutely love both of them but for two different reasons. The British one is relatable and quite if you understand it funny while the American one is relaxing and also funny to watch.
Well this video mainly focuses on The Office US SEASON 1 vs The Office UK... which is not interesting at all.
Why would you chose to focus on the only US season that had its hands tied instead of choosing seasons and moments where it made its own creative decisions... in the end those are the moments that define what the American version was.
Because the uk office wasn’t as long as the US office and this video is comparing them, helps to compare with similar plots. He said several times in the video that the US one went on to do its own thing. UK only had 3 seasons and 6 episodes per season. US had 9 seasons and like 20-30 eps per season, because Americans love to drag and milk their good shows. UK always keep their sitcoms nice and short, barring a few.

An important difference to point out between the characters of the two shows is that in the US version, you're meant to like most if not every single character, while in the U.K. version, you're supposed to feel almost indifferent to most of the characters. You would like some characters in the U.K. version better than others, but not extremely. This explains why fans of the US version often put characters up on a pedestal, saying things like it's got Dwight, Michael, or creed, while fans of the U.K. version don't usually show that much excitement over one character (not as often or overtly anyway), probably because of fewer moments of redemption as mentioned in the video. Both shows are great obviously because they both did so well.
