It seems like most of the other versions missed this vital point (including the American version).
If you look at what made Seinfeld so special, it was the earlier seasons where it seemed like you were watching reality, not people trying to make you laugh. The last 2 or 3 seasons it lost its magic because the characters and their experiences became less real.

Until I watched The Office I had no idea people like David Brent existed, despite living in England all my life. Most of the people Ive known have been very normal, quiet and uninteresting, so it was a genuine surprise to realise that Ricky Gervais was basing Brent on what he thought was quite a common type of character that you find in life.
They're fairly different in tone. I think some of the U.S. The Office seasons are as good since the performances are different enough that its a fresh take on the same characters.
they should have just made a completely different show like they ended up doing anyway because the american sitcom named 'the office' is funny enough but it completely missed the point of what it is
The Office was so special that German Television made their own version of it; in a similar style, but with other characters. The German `office´ wasn´t called `Büro´, but was named `Stromberg´ after the main character: Bernd Stromberg, a dastardly character who always gets his comeuppance, often falls flat on his face as a kind of higher justice; and in the end, he loses his job. I have watched most of the episodes and am a fan. watching both the English original and the German counterpart bought home to me, yet again, how far German humour has improved over the decades, but also how true Gervaises conviction is, that people are basically the same everywhere
Every now and then it all comes together perfectly - this show was one of those times. Gervais is super talented he totally nailed it 👏 - For me, the American version isn’t even close. You need that English reserve of politeness that strains itself during the scenes THAT makes it funny.
The writing, acting and composition is genius. One of the best sitcoms to ever be released! Many scenes are so cringe, yet will leave you in hysterics! 👉🏻😂😂😂😂
The Brit version only ran for 2 seasons, it was low budget and not up to the same standard as the proper US version which is still running . The Brit version was actually written by one of the actors ... ;-(
Hey you are touchy ! maybe because you are wrong :-O . Contrary to what you have written, the BBC flog their shows to death. Last of the summer wine, Only fools and horses , Top Gear all ran over 20 years ...to name just three. If the show would have been good enough to stand the test of time it would still be here....simples ;-)
***** Top Gear? Top Gear is a fucking talk-show. It's not about "standing the test of time" at all (which it does anyway). Most of the great shows in the UK have a run-time of about 1-3 seasons which are all pure gold and it leaves the audience wanting more. You don't usually get 8 extra seasons of pure trash and a shitty spin-off where they milk every single interesting show dry until you hate the sight of it and it goes from a 9/10 to a 5/10 because you've had enough like they do with shows in the US.
a good show will run and run even outside the cosy BBC, peep show season 9 is eagerly anticipated and the last 8 were anything but trash. Your theories just dont stand up. If a show is well received it will run until the viewing figures decline. you should research TV a bit more before you make ridiculous comments ;-)
***** Peep Show is basically the equivelent of 4 American seasons though, there's only 6 episodes in a season. Not true at all, again, only in America... British shows don't overstay their welcome, writers know when to stop. The Office, Spaced, Luther, The Mighty Boosh, The Inbetweeners, The IT Crowd and Sherlock are all amazing and well received shows that I have watched and fit my description. I suggest you do some research.

Most of the people Ive known have been very normal, quiet and uninteresting, so it was a genuine surprise to realise that Ricky Gervais was basing Brent on what he thought was quite a common type of character that you find in life.
Seeing it mean so much to the Actors is amazing, especially Mr Keenan, must have been hard leaving the TA's going into pirates of the Caribbean.
Great insights into a geanuine classic comedy series. I enjoyed this video a lot
:'(
Bloody hell I miss this.
Undoubtedly better than the US version, sorry.
MrSpartanm33 Why apologise..
It was the original and better by miles
They're fairly different in tone. I think some of the U.S. The Office seasons are as good since the performances are different enough that its a fresh take on the same characters.
they should have just made a completely different show like they ended up doing anyway because the american sitcom named 'the office' is funny enough but it completely missed the point of what it is
yea way better than us version which is just ok
Ricky's laugh... it's the best sound.
I have watched most of the episodes and am a fan. watching both the English original and the German counterpart bought home to me, yet again, how far German humour has improved over the decades, but also how true Gervaises conviction is, that people are basically the same everywhere
it's brilliant hearing how pissed off steve got when Ricky laughed!
Some lovely comments and memories be cast members from there time working on the show.
Aw its the music from Toy Story 2 when they have the Tim and Dawn montage at 18:30
Ahh thank you person from 4 years ago. I was wondering while it was playing. Hope all is good
Mackenzie Crook. Like Rowan Attkinson. Their faces are their fortune.
I always thought Gareth & Alice from Vicar of Dibley were brother & Sister
Can't believe they didn't mention the IT geek. His character was genius haha!
How big are Richard Curtis' hands?!
"Such Big Hands"
WHY would you play When She Loved Me in the background of the Tim/Dawn section? It just makes it even sadder! :(
Every now and then it all comes together perfectly - this show was one of those times. Gervais is super talented he totally nailed it 👏 - For me, the American version isn’t even close. You need that English reserve of politeness that strains itself during the scenes THAT makes it funny.
I was holding out 'til the end to see the longest time that Ricky didn't burst out laughing. Alas, he didn't disappoint lol
The writing, acting and composition is genius. One of the best sitcoms to ever be released! Many scenes are so cringe, yet will leave you in hysterics! 👉🏻😂😂😂😂
Matt Perry just looms in reminding me of mortality
Credit to these guys. Brilliant all I have been seeing. Thumbs up
Gotta love Ricky
For someone who is so insistent on not selling out to _celebrity_ and/or _endorsements_, Ricky sure loves his _Celebrity endorsements_..

Fried not baked
Stunning to watch in its day
I can't get into the US office, the UK version is definitely a lot funnier and feels a lot more real.

Top Gear?

Peep Show is basically the equivelent of 4 American seasons though, there's only 6 episodes in a season.
Completely genius show, I remember watching when it first aired on the BBC and being instantly enamored.
Gervais-Merchant are the Lennon-McCartney of scriptwriting
Thanks very much indeed for this - never knew it existed! Incredible show, and amazing memory:)
great show ricky is so funny
Love it! Awesome content! Can't wait to see what else you guys come out with.
The office wasn’t a great show, it was an immortal show.
*is an immortal show
