This is one of the best movies about PTSD, and it always gets overlooked as just an action fest.
Yes!! That final scene I almost broke down!I’ve seen it so many times, but his performance on reimagining one of his most horrific moments during Vietnam and how he’s treated in civilian life is just so well captivated by Stallone 🤘
Only by those who don’t realize that it’s not an action flick. It’s a drama with action elements.
I think it has both bc the action is really good...but the true story doesn't really start until the end....just takes a bit of time to get there
Yes, the book was written specifically to have an anti war stance and First Blood stayed true to that. That said, after it got popular, Hollywood turned it into glorified murder porn with the rest of the series.
Well, the sequels didn’t really do it any favors in that regard, retroactively speaking.
It's all real. Real car crashes, real explosions, real mountains. NO CGI existed.
Best part about it. 🤘

Also that scene where he jumped off the side of the mountain that was a real stunt and when he hit the tree he broke a few ribs

I had a neighbor that was a Vietnam veteran and suffered from severe PTSD. He always kept his lawn free of grass and he would frequently rake it to ensure that he could see the enemy's footprints. He was a nice guy but any loud sound would cause him to get really upset and EXTREMELY defensive. He eventually took his own life. I still feel bad for him. No one should have to suffer like that. Not much of a life.
😢 That’s really sad man. My dad was in Vietnam too and he cried at the end of this movie. Rambo’s words at the end of the movie rang true for thousands of soldiers that returned home from the war.
That's a tragic ending to his life, Mr. Crider😟 It's saddening to hear that.
The first time I saw this, the way they cut in the triggers was so different from any other "flashback" depiction I'd seen in film before. It changed how I interacted with my dad as a teenager, for the better.
Everything Rambo said about how he was treated when he came home from the war was totally true. When our guys came home from Vietnam, they were treated horribly.
The fact that the Colonel let his own soldier cry on his shoulder and just let it happen was phenomenal..m

The Colonel really loved his "boy", really related to his PTSD.
@@LazyDazeMedia The paternal mentality that Trautman had came from the fact that the character himself is the commanding officer seeing the trauma he inflicted on his on soldier. In the original story Rambo kills himself using Trautmans pistol saying "You made me, you can unmake me." What hits harder is that Trautmans actor was a WW2 vet so it hit him really hard on set I'm guessing because he's heard stories like that from real troops.
To answer your question about "Does he do his own stunts?" Yes Stallone is one of the few actors that does the majority of his own stunts. During the scene where he falls thru the trees, he actually broke his rib on that branch.
I knew it! I didn’t wanna speak out of turn not knowing 100% but that’s what I thought because I remember on the Rocky movies he always wanted full contact for more realism.

@@LazyDazeMedia He did a lot of the stunts, but he did have a stuntman. In the dvd commentary, he states that a stuntman did the the first half of the fall through the trees and Stallone did the last 15 feet. He did injure his ribs on that stunt though.

I haven't seen this movie since well before I joined the Army. I've been out of the army for 6 years now, and that scene really does bring out tears every time now.

The entire soul of the movie comes down to that last five minutes with Rambo pouring his grief out to Trautman. Many vets who endured the same thing Rambo had to put up with were very grateful for that scene because it brought to life the struggles of those vets that nobody gave a second thought of when it came to the real horrors they had to live with.
I couldn’t agree more. Without that you have a character that said little through the movie and was very reserved. That end scene was such an amalgamation of his experience in Vietnam reincarnated back in the US and him reliving what he went through every day.

That last scene shows how good an actor Stallone really is. That pain is real. I know vets who can't watch war films because it just brings back to many bad memories. These people have seen hell and terrible things and that doesn't go away.

I bought a knife like that off a TV ad. I still have it, but the compass part on top fell off. It had fishing line and hooks inside the handle and a couple of waterproof matches. It also came with it's sheath and s sharpening stone. I carried it unsheathed when I had to make night deposits at a bank after my part time job.
We are so lucky that they didn't kill Rambo like they originally intended to do.

There is an alternate ending in the deleted scenes on the DVD where he kills himself right in front of Colonel Troutman. It is very difficult to watch.
It was Kirk Douglas who was going to be the original Colonel Troutman he felt the Rambo character should die he ended up quitting and being replaced by Richard Crena

From everything I've read, seen and heard, that was one fucked up war (supposed to be a police action), was a civil war between the north and south Vietnamese, and the U.S. had no business being there, but the political climate in the U.S. at the time was stop Communism at all costs (the real enemy being Russia) and quite frankly, there was too much money in war. Bell helicopter and all the munitions manufacturers stood to lose billions if America didn't go to war. The GIs who enlisted or were drafted were just doing a job. They didn't know Vietnam was going to be such a disgusting and unpopular conflict.

If you look closely at the Sheriff's desk in his office, you can see his medal display which includes a Silver Star. According to the book, Sheriff Teasle is a Korean War vet.
I love the fact this isn't really a bombastic action film like its sequels, it's a commentary. About how war makes broken people, effects of PTSD, the horrendous treatment of veterans coming back from a war they didn't even want to fight to begin with by both citizens and the government they were fighting for. Brilliant movie.
The end of this movie hurts, He speaks so much truth. Great performance.

Love seeing them younger generation get into First Blood.
Stallone captured the agony of being important, having people need you, being part of a team and most importantly PTSD all in one dramatic conclusion in this movie. Too many people just see this as an early 80’s Hollywood violent movie but it’s so much more. I wish more people would watch this just to help understand what many veterans, LEO, etc experience trying to live their lives and find a place in this world.
Exactly why I felt it was important to point that out in our reaction/review as that to me was the most important message of the film.
The lesson here is "Let a dude eat at your diner or he will burn your city to the ground around you." and common sense should tell you that if a person that's unarmed can rip your police station apart with all your officers in it, you might just want to avoid doing something stupid like chasing that EXTREMELY dangerous person into a mountainous forest region...
Bigger lesson is to properly diagnose and treat PTSD. Properly treated he wouldn't have been a socially outcast vagrant unable to function in normal society.
Was the sheriff looking to run him out of town more of an ass than he needed to be? Yes. Why was he an ass though? You have a small remote town and know everybody. Some vagrant, giving signs of being antisocial and possibly unstable comes wandering through your town. Are you going to pay special attention to him and try to move him along? Hell yes! That is why those citizens elected him sheriff. Still it would have been far better to let him buy a meal and then help him on his way.
Now the deputy at the station who took to beating him, that was a full on asshole.
@@kennethfharkin This was extremely common at the time with war veterans trying to reenter the civilian workforce. Many people hated Vietnam veterans and vilified them in the eyes of the public. At the time PTSD wasn't something people were very aware of or believed was real. There wasn't a treatment for it at the time. So the veterans would come back and because war protesters vilified them, spitting on them in public, this made people wary of hiring veterans at the time and it caused portions of the country to do the bullshit the small town sheriff did in this movie. He saw John Rambo as a dangerous threat to the peace in "His" little town. John Rambo did absolutely nothing wrong and it goes without saying that the sheriff was responsible for everything that occurred. If he showed a bit of respect to the veteran, none of that would've happened...
@@secludedmisanthrope6388 Agreed. Just a little bit of kindness from the sheriff could have averted everything. Because of the public perception of the Vietnam war those vets were treated horribly and it made the already shitty handling of PTSD at the time even worse. Until the plight of the Vietnam vets was recognized nobody really took an honest look at the effects of PTSD even though it has always existed. Vietnam took a dirty little secret everyone knew about to some degree, PTSD, and put a spotlight on it by making it even worse.
I had two uncles that returned from WWII and went on to drink themselves into the grave by the 1970s when I was a little kid. My father, who was about 20 years younger than them, would not uncommonly get calls from bars that he had a brother there in need of help and we would wake the next morning to find a temporary house guest. Later my father explained how they had each been scarred by their experiences, one in Europe and the other in the Pacific and it was our responsibility to do what we could for them. From the time the war ended until the end of their lives they were never able to function normally within society. I wonder if had the problem really been understood and treated properly would they have been able to enjoy the next thirty years of their lives. Those were vets haunted by their experiences who had a public that supported and celebrated their victory even though people simply didn't understand PTSD. For vets that came back and were then treated like crap it was even worse.

PTSD has always been a thing, they just used different names to describe it and no one in the government wanted to admit that it was real for many reasons. Rambo could have walked away and he didn't but nothing he did warranted his treatment.

Yes, it's true that U.S soldiers committed atrocities and war crimes during the Vietnam War but the the Vietcong were absolute monsters that wouldn't even give a second thought to killing or torturing an enemy whether it be a young GI or a South Vietnamese family with children of their own who aided some U.S soldiers.
Fun Fact: They chose the name John Rambo because it sounded like a normal basic name. Now, it is synonymous with Badass.

Morell got the name from Rambo apples which is such a simple origin for something so iconic. They never say his first name in the book but John is certainly a normal name

You find out the full name is John JAY Rambo. John Jay was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and a signee of the Declaration of Independence.

Probably one of the BEST dialogue scenes EVER! (definitely one of my favorites) With the Colonel calmly spelling out the extreme danger Rambo represents and the Sheriff rather stubbornly (& stupidly, considering how efficiently Rambo took his posse apart), holding on to his desire for revenge & hurt pride.
Both the Sheriff and Rambo share so many similarities that progress through the film. Both saw RED and couldn't stop.

Funniest part is where author David Morrell got the name "Rambo".............from a carton of apples. Yep. Literally. "Rambo apples" is where he got the name "Rambo".

John Rambo was like the John Wick of a previous generation, guy is just unstoppable. And I agree, Stallone's acting is pretty damn great.

Dunno why everyone keeps talking about this John Wick movie. I hated those movies and hated the character. I like Keanu though. But for me, there are several movies that people like and I hated: 1) The Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy (hated it and hated Heath Ledger as Joker) 2) The Matrix Trilogy 3) Avatar 4) Terminator 2 (liked part 1 waaay better). And a few others I can't think of now. But hey, to each his own I guess.

This movie shed a light on how veterans from Vietnam era was treated. Scary to think society just pushes vets away like this.
The saddest part is, they don't make great movies like this anymore
First Blood is a great movie. Not just as a action film but just as a movie in general... it just works. Great story, great message, and that last scene is just unbelievable. Sadly the sequels turned into shoot em up, explosions n hip fire crazy action for no reason at all, but
..... I still enjoyed them. Just not nearly as much as this film. The scene at the end is so powerful it almost brings tears. The other Rambo movies don’t even come close to that kind of emotion.
As a wounded multiple tour combat vet from our largely ignored wars in the middle east...I really feel his pain at the end. Even in a room full of people...we are completely alone, ignored, misrepresented, and feared. Most of us figure out a way to get out of bed every day and try to make something of our lives in the wake of the absolute devastation we have seen, felt, and reaped in the world. All too often, many of us decide to end the pain permanently.
There is no peace for people like me.
Can only imagine.
There definitely was visual representation when the sharif is driving Rambo out of his town so he doesn’t bother the townspeople, it’s very much like the forgotten vets that once they return are literally just forgotten by most and shunned by others due to the toll that kind of life takes on you.

@@LazyDazeMedia Most people are only interested in cheap thrills rather than having anything substantive. You would not believe the crap I've heard since I came home from my first tour. The supportive types can be just as revolting as the ones who outright hate me.
Our civilian population has very little actual interaction with our military. Ever smaller portions of our country become military members and it is also becoming largely stratified within the same families who serve generation after generation. This adds to the growing chasm between those who serve, and those who don't.
I'm not going to lie. A lot of veterans like me are resentful towards the American people. Not only did they send us to war...(and make no mistake that it was the people that allowed us to remain in war for the last 20 years, the recent unrest shows that lots of people are still willing to make their government and communities uncomfortable, just not for Soldiers like me)but they kept us in war, didn't allow us to win, ignored us when we came home, told us to get over it when we try to talk about it, and then blame us for the mess that was created when THEY sent us there...
There was hardly a murmur for any of my needlessly killed brothers and sisters. Zero complaints from anyone when I was sent back over time and time again. The will of the people was for me to go kill and be killed...and then shut the fuck up about it because "nobody held a gun to your head to go and serve? I had nothing to do with it"...or ..."shut the fuck up, nobody cares"
It's a sick joke. I used to love the people of this country. I gave almost everything I could in service to those people. My broken body, my broken mind, and my broken soul. I just want to talk about it. I just want people to care about how their choices send people like me to kill and die in their name. They don't. And I was a fool for thinking they could.
All that being said, people should start to ask themselves if it is wise to disenfranchise those who are most skilled at violence? How long can that be sustained?
It’s incredible the amount of neglect that has occurred in regards to even the simple act of acknowledgment towards the needs of vets let alone compassion and appreciation (at least).
It’s incredible after watchin Part 2 (and bare with me I know it’s just a movie) but the message is exactly THAT. There’s one line that I scuffed at in Part 2 (which is going up soon) by top brass telling Rambo to forget the war and the old Vietnam is dead and Rambo replies “I’m alive, it’s still alive” and that one interaction spoke so much to the mindset of the government at the time (and now).
Obviously it’s a film, but the message of Part 2 seemed stronger than I remember (of course it also is very exploitive by amping up the violence)
Yes there is. I can't say more than that because it's too complicated put into words but peace is there. And I'm confident it's where you least expect it, find fight or fear your past. Plus we're all alone to the degree we don't reach out.
One of my all time favorite books and one of the first adult stories I read as a kid. In the book, Col. Trautman ended up putting Rambo “out of his misery” after he and the sheriff basically fought to the point of death. The movie was such a hit that they changed the original ending. That said, the novel “First Blood” gives such a thought provoking insight into PTSD. A must read and most own!
The ending of the novel would have allowed this film to stand as a greater testament to the tragedy of PTSD rather than the start of a campy action series.

@@cedricbauman9537 That is the Stallone arc. Start serious, go camp, try to finish the camp with something serious. He did the same with Rocky. Rambo was camp by # 2, # 3 had him driving the Russians out of Afghanistan and a kids cartoon series. Then he gets old and wants something of significance so... the last movies in the series.

Colonel Trautman is the voice of reason. These small-town crooked sheriffs and deputies need a correcting. They really don't know who they are dealing with.

I honestly like this movie cause it reminds me of my father. PTSD takes it toll. He served in Vietnam as a special forces green beret. He was a Sgt. He taught me many things and only spoke of Vietnam once

I’ve always wondered is Green Berets trained like John Rambo was it’s always intriguing to me and I wanna learn more my dad was drafted in 1966 but I was born and he didn’t have to go but I remember the soldiers coming home and what they endured by Tv back then and I have always been a Vietnam War advocate learning what I could about it always thank you again
"First Blood" was based on a novel by David Morrell. If you are a reader, I strongly advise another of his books, "The Fifth Profession." One of my favorite action/mysteries, to this day.
Stallone has a rep as an action star but movies like First Blood prove that he can really act. I recommend his movie Copland.
The funny thing is, when you hear the name "Rambo," you immediately think of someone going balls to the wall, one-man army. Ironically enough, the first movie is very *anti-war* in terms of theme.
Supposedly Teasle was a Korean War veteran in the source material books and had anger toward Vietnam veterans because he felt their war overshadowed his. But he doesn't even realize that he's the lucky one. He came home, got a job and was able to live life. Guys like Rambo were shunned and left to fend for themselves.
I think the lesson of this film is that sometimes we, so convinced of our own righteousness, will start fights that turn out to not be worth it in the end.

I'm a soldier and what he says at the end is real. They send us young men to fight for their wars and then spit on us when we come home.
This movie is a classic!!
Back in those days, the leftists had influence over our young that pushed a lot of political hate onto our military. When I got out of the Navy in 1970, I made sure to wear civies going home. When this movie came out 12 years later, it brought it all back to me. I think back on it with anger mainly toward the universities and media. I don't remember law enforcement being on the side of the left. What got the sheriff going against Rambo is that he most likely thought of him as being a left-wing hippy. They were known as being physically unkempt (needing haircuts and showers) as well as disrespecting the flag by wearing it on their clothing; many times on the seat of their pants. He didn't find out Rambo was ex-military until afterwards.
What makes this movie so good is how it brings out so much emotion in the viewer. First, you're sad because Rambo finds out his buddy died, then you're mad because of how the police mistreat Rambo, then you're excited and pumped with the action, then you're drained because of the dramatic, tragic ending. This movie is great. Also, the book is a must-read.

The Sheriff is a Korean Vet who didn't want to deal with the animosity that might come with having a Vietnam vet in his quiet small town (Vietnam vets were hated when they got home sadly). He was giving orders to his cops, just like Rambo and other soldiers got orders from their superiors and both the cops and soldiers have a sort of identical issue where they rely on their orders, despite not really knowing why they're doing what they're doing. I never could necessarily hate any character in this movie, knowing the contexts of the book. I think both police officers and soldiers have the issue in society where others look at them with hatred without knowing the person at all. Like Rambo said, why should people be protesting at him and spitting on him? They don't know what it was like for him and his duty

Colonel Sam Troutman was played by Richard Crenna. Crenna was one of the last actors to start in radio, move on to early TV in the 50s, then move into movies. He’s excellent in the movie ‘The Sand Pebbles’ with Steve McQueen and Candice Bergen. You should really consider reacting to that one.
The book is way more graphic. And the whole movie would not have happened if the sheriff would have just got him a coffee and a sandwich.
It wasn't about the food, it was about the disrespect from a country that this man and his friends fought and died for. That would set anyone off I like to think.

The line to buy a Rambo knife for Christmas 1982 was unbelievable.
Rambo: First Blood II is even better. He actually kills people in that one.
Boy there was a huge uproar when this came out........from all the police along the north west coast and all the national guardsmen as well.
It was just a story, and the usual situation was turned up to 11 to catch the public's interest.
Even Stallone had to explain that it wasn't to put down anyone but the country's attitude towards Vietnam vets. All vets who came home from wars and had yet another fight on their hands. When John said, "I can't even hold a job, parkin cars!!!..." Man that made everyone in the theater tear up.
I don’t doubt it. End of the day it’s an action movie however they cleverly snuck in an excellent performance in the last scene that just tied it all together with a nice bow. If you look back that was around the time I also started cloaking up 🤘

I’m really glad you guys pretty much added the whole end scene. Coming from a military family and I myself who served in the Navy loved this film.
And I can never watch that ending scene without tears.

Quick trivia, sherrif teasel is a Korean War veteran which is also part of why he has disdain for rambo/vietnam vets. The Korean War was often called the forgotten war because it fell between ww2 and Vietnam so many of the Korean vets felled forgotten and unappreciated.
First Blood is a movie that I think is very different from what people expect when they hear the Rambo name. Yes, there is plenty of action and gunfire and whatnot, but only one person is actually killed (accidentally) and there is a much deeper story to it. Obviously, the sequels go in a different direction and that's where a lot of peoples' ideas about the series come from, but the first movie really carries some weight to it in a way people might not expect.
Yes Sly did all of his own stunts... In fact when he jumped off the cliff, and landed in the trees, when he screams in pain, he actually broke ribs on the tree branch he landed on.
"Rocky" 1976 is a must see. Stallone wrote it and and it was his first major role. One of the best movies ever and Stallone's acting is incredible... just like you said, in that movie he "is" Rocky.
This movie is so damn good. It's amazing how dramatically the sequels shift the tone of the series. They're great fun, but First Blood tries so hard to tell a story about the plight of veterans. Obviously Stallone and Richard Crenna put in great performances, but Brian Dennehy does an amazing job as the sheriff too

Had they just done this one, it would've been PERFECT (the first two sequels are largely 80s Action and not as relatable; then, the two done in the 2000s try to go back to the more "brutal humanity", but just never got it as good as this one did)

This film single-handedly gave birth to the Action Hero genre of the 1980s, action figures and even a failed Saturday morning cartoon. WTF?
This is a movie that made me fall in love with CINEMATOGRAPHY. What Andrew Laszlo did with anamorphic lenses at a wide open f-stop and push-processing the film to shoot in almost no practical light was amazing.
This film spoke to the veterans of the Vietnam War who shipped off to fight in Southeast Asia in a war that did not directly involve the US. As soon as they make it back to the States, many don't have a home to go back to, during a second recession, a troubled presidential administration, and they got spat on by hippies and called baby killers. Many of them got exposed to Agent Orange. Irreparable damage done to them through the transmutation into killing machines thanks to the US government's military industrial complex. Definitely struck a chord. Also exposing small-town law enforcement who should have been sent to fight in Vietnam with the way they were going about John Rambo.
There is an alternate ending to this movie where Rambo actually commits suicide while with Trautman. Something that is still a very real problem among vets.
Yeah they have an alternate ending I saw on the blu ray and on TH-cam where he has the colonel shoot him. Definitely prefer this one over that alternate ending. I understand it’s a book as well which has the same grim (yet real) ending.

This movie really brought about public awareness of PTSD. Our soldiers returning from Vietnam were treated horribly and spit on by the American people. Today, veterans are treated with much more respect and dignity. Now, it's the police that are treated horribly and spit on constantly because of media perception, just like the returning vets from Vietnam. Unless you know what the soldiers and police officers go through and deal with on a daily basis, people don't have the right to judge. Maybe someday police officers will be treated much more fairly and favorably.
My father was also a soldier, he didn’t fought in Vietnam but he was also treated the same way when he came home, he says that this film really gets to him

It always slips my mind how terrific Stallone was in this movie.. I only watched it once when I was 11 or 12, and I couldn’t watch it again.. Probably because of that final scene, which is so heartbreaking..
Stallone is one of a handful of action stars that can do more than action.

So glad you guy’s took the time to watch this movie one of Stallone’s best movies and such a powerful story that was told about veterans. Of that war. Something like this happened to my father back in the 70’s
Him falling threw the tree branches, that's real. Him screaming, i think he said he cracked a rib. There is an alternate ending rambo dies, same with rocky 1. Can u imagine only 1 Rambo or just 1 Rocky.

Brian Denehy was awesome in that part. I grew up in Texas and now live in Oklahoma and I KNOW that sheriff. Know what I mean? They’re everywhere in my neck of the woods.

@@LazyDazeMedia One of the things I really liked about the movie was the subtle bit of backstory you get about Sheriff Teasle and how he was also a war hero. You can see his medals behind his desk in his office , which include the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross, and Silver Star. The latter two being the 2nd and 3rd highest honors you can receive for valor behind the Medal of Honor, and the Purple Heart is given when you are wounded in combat. So even though it didn't flesh out his story like the novel did, just that little bit of set dressing tells you that the Sheriff has seen some shit too.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Delmar Berry, the friend that Rambo was going to meet at the start of the film, the one who died of cancer, contracted cancer from an Army chemical warfare experiment. His mother mentions "all that orange stuff they sprayed around," which is a reference to Agent Orange, a chemical defoliant and herbicide that was used in the Vietnam War to destroy trees, bushes, and vegetation in order to deprive the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army of concealment and food crops. But the chemical had toxic side effects that affected over three million people, including US servicemen, which resulted in the development of cancer and birth defects in children.
Incredibly sad but yeah I knew that’s why I felt it important to leave that line of dialogue in as it’s one of the many issues this film addresses 🙌✌️
@@LazyDazeMedia Yep, and there was another issue that was in the novel that I wish had been kept in the movie. One of the many reasons that Sheriff Teasle has a problem with Rambo that is not mentioned in the film is that Teasle is also a war veteran. Teasle in the novel is a Korean War veteran, and many Korean War vets felt like they had been forgotten by their country, veterans of a forgotten war, especially after Vietnam. As a result, many felt a certain resentment towards Vietnam veterans.

This is one of the best movie review channels, you guys rock! Rambo: First Blood is one of my all time favorite films. It works as an action film well but at its heart it holds a very powerful message. I'm not one to tear up or cry in movies (my wife claims its me trying to be macho) but at the end where Stallone breaks down and gives that speech, I tear up every time. It breaks my heart because i know there are real vets out there who feel the same way, its sad. I hate when critics back in the day tried to say this movie glorified violence and was just a typical action film. I say they're dense if they didn't get the films powerful underlying message. I can't wait until you get to Rambo III. I feel that one is highly underrated. Its more of a straight action movie so in terms of just action movies, its one of my favorites. Rambo (2006) is amazing as well. Stallone is one of my favorite actors and I would love to see you dive into the Rocky series (the Rocky series is my favorite series of all time), and a Stallone film that has been unfairly judged and panned and that is Over the Top. The Special forces soldier Roy Benavidez and his story in Vietnam was a major inspiration to the character of Rambo.
Many of the injuries in the film are in fact real. The deputy Rambo trips, then elbows in the nose as he's fleeing the building..........Stallone actually connected and broke his nose. His writhing around on the floor for that quick shot before Rambo busts through the front door, was real. And the scene where Rambo jumps from the cliff to avoid being shot by Galt.........he did three takes of that, with the first two going just fine, but the director wanted one more, and when Stallone went through the trees the third time, one of the branches didn't give, and he broke his ribs. He's stated that the scenes where Rambo has to act like he's hurt required no acting since he was actually in immense pain.
82, that was only 7yrs after Vietnam actually ended.
The book was much better. The one thing movie does is make the Sheriff a one dimensional character. He is himself a Korean War Veteran, and much more complex in the book, which didn't seek to make one side good guy bad guy so much as generational differences.
Yeah there’s a scene in the film (had to edit it out for timing) where he sits in his office and you see his medals framed. I never really saw him as an antagonist in the truest sense, more or less he and Rambo were the same people, just different phases in their life. Both blood thirsty.
@@LazyDazeMedia The sheriff was honestly looking out for the community which elected him. He was a little more of an ass than he needed to be by not letting Rambo buy a meal but then again we do not know how many drifters have come through that town causing problems already. Now the deputy at the station and in the helicopeter; he was an asshole. Once the sheriff lost people though, assholes or not they were his people, there was no turning back for him.

@@kennethfharkin totally agree; I think that’s why it really helped with the casting of Brian Dennehy in that role to give him a humanity by his acting alone whereas his dialogue is very straight forward small towns sharif.
@@kennethfharkin another thing that was stated in the book but NOT in the film was that this was the 15th town where an overbearing asshole cop had run him out for basically no reason, Rambo had reached his limit. Teasle, in the book, was angry that Vietnam vets were getting more attention than Korea vets, which helped fuel the fire.
Sly trained for Rocky and Rambo at the same time and as Rocky 4 was being put out Rambo was coming as well, and he wanted to get bigger for each Rocky and wanted more muscle. Changed his diet and even his personal trainer. During Rambo: First Blood || he mainly ate oatmeal cookies and drank coffee during workouts and shooting the movie. There’s a whole video out about it
I believe the sheriff was a Korean war veteran and resents the Vietnam veterans because the Korean war was called The Forgotten War. I heard this was a real issue for some veterans of both wars.

A lot of these small town sheriffs departments are really sorry sobs for real. After me and my wife separated I came by to see my daughter and my wife pushed me off the porch and I fractured my arm. I started walking down the highway and a Mobile county deputy stopped me and tried to finish breaking my arm. Luckily an ems rolled up behind his car and a paramedic told him to back off. Once me and my wife got into an argument and I took a walk and thought sitting behind a church would be a good place to rest and think. Somebody called the sheriffs department and again, a Mobile county deputy decided it would be a good idea to beat me up.

Speaking of Stallone doing all his own stunts and injuries.....in the scene where Rambo escapes the jail and snatches the motorcyclist off his bike, Stallone dislocated his own shoulder during that stunt. If you watch for it, you can see it, and will notice that Stallone's arm is dangling limp as he spins and seems to limp out of camera shot (before jumping on the bike).

I would say perhaps one of the best acting performances in any of Stallone's movies and I have seen quite a few of them and this was still during a time when most of what you saw was pretty much the real deal.
That last scene made me cry...can't hold a job parking cars, the story of an IED blowing up his friend, his inability to sleep without seeing it in his dreams ....man
@@nitroburner1838 Some of the powers that be told Stallone that scene during the end when he breaks down would never work but he knew better because many of the Vietnam Veterans felt alienated after the war and had no where or no one to turn to when they came back to the states. Even now some people are alienated and we have the Corona Virus that adds to it but it will get better just be patient everyone help is on the way.
@@timothyrenar5498 I think the directors or producers cut certain things for time constraints or maybe the projection of Rambo was supposed to be incredibly strong (kinda Clint Eastwood, John Wayne ish) but I think they felt vulnerability would make it powerful...and for all the machismo of 80's movies...this one struck a particular tone of vulnerable strength.....
Rambo through the series actually still is a very emotionally vulnerable character (also a straight BEAST) which you can’t really say for other action starts of the 80s.
@@LazyDazeMedia Sometimes vulnerability gives a person more strength and more determination to survive and that concept perhaps separated Rambo from many other action films during that time period and Stallone fit that bill perfect because he himself as well has vulnerability and strength so that combination was perfect.
