Just want to say that I appreciate everyone filling me in on this stuff! As a Canadian who didn't study American history, I had no idea what happened in Vietnam or how veterans were treated afterwards. I didn't even know what the National Guard was. This all makes a lot more sense now, so thank you. 🙏 I'm sure my ignorance drove alot of you a bit mad. 😂

I love how the majority of people go into this one thinking they are going to be watching a dyed-in-the-wool popcorn action flick, and then near the end realize they’re watching something that is damned near real cinematic art. Troutman is a little over-the-top, but outside that this is almost a “film”.

My dad was career Air Force and did a couple of tours in Vietnam. Back then there was a lot of animosity towards soldiers, they were accused of killing innocent civilians and called “baby killer” and people said they raped women, etc. I remember the unkind things some of my classmates said to me at the time based on what their parents had told them from rumors. I literally had other kids tell me they hoped my dad died over there (I was 8 years old). Some of the reason there was such a big campaign to support our troops came out of all the hate the older vets had experienced. We never want to see people treated that way again for doing their job. If people have a problem with what the government decides to do that’s one thing, but to take it out on the soldiers who were just defending our freedom, is inexcusable!

Yeah, there was lots of anti war propaganda that decided to paint US soldiers as evil in order to get the public against the war. So these groups were mad that the government drafted people then spit on those same people when they got back.

people always point out the fact that vietnam vets werent treated well after the war, but another thing to realize is that the vietnam issued m65 jackets and other military issued clothes were hugely popular among civilians due to the availability and price in surplus stores, and because they were pretty warm despite being fairly light, so they were common among common drifters and such, so it wouldnt have immediately been apparent that he was a vet.

"They drew first blood, not me."
Fun Fact: The large piece of rotten canvas that Rambo finds in the woods and cuts into a makeshift coat was in fact not a movie prop, but a real piece of rotten canvas found by the film crew during the movie's production. Since there was only one piece, Sylvester Stallone joked about how the canvas became a treasured prop on the set. After filming ended, Stallone kept the rotten canvas and reportedly still has it in his possession to this very day.
Bonus Fact: Sylvester Stallone hated the first cut of the film so much that he tried to buy the film back and destroy it. When he couldn't do that, he suggested that the producers cut much of his part and let the rest of the characters tell the story. That cut the movie time in half and set a precedent for future action movies.

Vietnam was an ugly war, even as wars go. A lot of people felt it was an unjust, politically motivated war. Others felt that dissenters were unpatriotic and so there was a lot of mutual anger and resentment. Also, Vietnam wasn't a battle between two uniformed armies, but more an insurgency with combatants hiding among civilians, so a lot of civilians were caught in the crossfire. The Vietnamese didn't keep to the Geneva Convention so many POWs were badly tortured. Many men came back from that war with severe PTSD and many of those didn't get the help and treatment they needed at the time. This movie came out less than 10 years after American involvement in Vietnam ended so many of those wounds were still fresh in the public mindset.

He actually broke the nose of the cop that he elbowed in the face on the floor of the police station so the bandage you see on the cops face for the rest of the film is needed and not just a prop. The poncho he made out of the tarp was supposed to help him stay warm. That was also the most protected prop item on the set cause he really made it out of an old tarp they found laying around. Stallone really did the jump into the trees and cracked a couple ribs. I love the speech at the end of the movie. Stallone really sells the part. The extra soldiers were “weekend warriors” Trautman didn’t bring them in. His red bandana doesn’t happen until the next movie I believe. I think the best thing about this movie is so much of this movie is practical. Most of the stunts were done by the actors. Stallone really had those rats on him and biting him. Nowadays all soldiers/veterans are treated with respect but during Vietnam and Korea they weren’t. They were protested and called names. My father in law went through it back then and not long after I started dating my wife we got him a veteran hat to wear and he got treated differently by people than he did when he came home from the war.

a couple of facts about the making of this movie...
    1. The officer that Rambo elbowed in the face during the station escape, really got hit in the nose. Later when you see him with a bandage across his nose, it's real.
    2. The police car jumping as high and far as it did was an accident. The stunt driver hurt his back when the car landed.
    3. Stallone actually jumped into the tree from like 5 feet up. He actually broke ribs. When he yells, it's real.
    4. When Rambo runs into the cave entrance, a gunshot squib goes off and burned his hand pretty badly.
This is a great movie, but totally different than the book. The book is a must-read.

    The soldiers were National Guardsmen.
Also, that’s pretty much what people’s names were back then. Figure most of those people were born in the early 60’s. Bill, Ted, Jim, Mitch etc., were the standard names of the times.
Soldiers were held in pretty low esteem until fairly recently. The crazy overcompensation of American patriotism you see is partly because of the guilt a lot of Americans felt at how badly Vietnam vets were treated when they came back.
The ‘bag’ was because he was running around the Pacific Northwest around late December (you saw a Christmas tree). It was probably 5 degrees Celsius & raining. He maybe could’ve taken the coat off the dead cop, but it was covered in blood.

The soldiers were National Guard, not active US Army. They are controlled by the individual states. Almost all the US states have them. They are made up by civilians who do a few weekends a year of duty to be a short of reserve in a national emergency so they have light military training, but mostly they essentially back up police departments during natural and man made disasters. During the 1980s they were derided by both active duty soldiers and civilians as "Weekend Warriors" and not "real" soldiers, just guys essentially pretending to be one. In more recent years they are treated with much more respect because to bolster the active duty troops they are also sent overseas to combat zones, taking casualties just like other soldiers.

I believe Vietnam was the first televised war. When it was broadcast by the news back to the States, the public was horrified by what they saw. A lot of the military were involved in killing civilians including children. This was because the people they were fighting would sometimes use civilians to ambush American soldiers. Also, the sheer complexity of the war also had the military resorting to target civilians on purpose. That's why Rambo said that they were calling him "baby killer". In any case, public opinion on the war soured. So when the soldiers returned from war they were protested and treated badly. It was because of how the Vietnam veterans were treated that today many people try to be more respectful towards veterans in general.

Beyond glad you've watched the cinematic adaptation of First Blood - a tale by the legendary David Morrell that's now the 1st entry of the 5-film John Rambo film franchise.
The majority of the film except the ending are based of the entire book. Sadly the novel ended with Rambo taking his own life instead of getting arrested like he did at the end of the film version here.
Had he not done that, Sylvester Stallone would have never done the five movies as one of the greatest fictional heroes of all time.

"Rambo" is an apple. Garden of Eden. Stallone comes from a family of mystics: His brother is a Brother (Mason). Their mother is into crystal and spirits and such. "Rocky" was all esoteric as well; "Rocky" is Jesus. He suffers to help everybody else. "Apollo" helps "Adriatic" in the myths. Butkis, the "Dog", is "God" in the tarot. "Gonna Fly Now" while ascending the pyramid to a higher state. And so forth.

Personally, films took a fast decline after the 90's imo. I see you just watched a Stallone movie and Stallone stars along with Rutger Hauer in the movie I'd like to recommend you watch. It is the 1981THRILLER, NIGHTHAWKS. Hope you react to it. Ruter is the kind of bad guy you just can't help but like, even though he plays bad. I think you'll enjoy the movie, it's one of my favs.

This, the OG, is the ONLY one of the Rambo series worth watching, imo - the sequel is OK but just... sensational garbage
btw, ptsd was not a well-known/acknowledged condition at the time (some still spoke of "shell shock" - but Vietnam experience was altogether different kind of warfare than most had experienced before). Also, the Vietnam vets were not all heartily welcomed home everywhere upon their return... even into the early 80s, they were often viewed in a negative light in parts of the country (like the Pac NW town in this movie). It wasn't until the Gulf War that our fighting men/women were finally welcomed home as heroes again. Odd, yes. The military you see here tracking Rambo up into the mountains are not active duty US Army, they are probably Natl Guardsmen called in to deal with this "crisis." Natl Guard serve a few days a month - mostly training - and are called in to help with natural disasters or other major threat to public safety (like a stronger police force that the governor can tap, as needed).

Yes exactly! I am a bit older but same difference. Just turned 38 so 9/11 was when I was in highschool. There's a huge difference of what we learn here and in the USA I think. History wasn't mandatory for me, so I probably don't even know that much about Canadian history. 😂

Watch the movie this was copied off of. Watch Ruckus (1980) with Dirk Benedict and Linda Blair. Rambo is almost a duplicate of that movie. Same movie posters and all. Both movies, a quiet Vietnam Vet (both former special forces) are hunted by small town good ole' boys police. In both movies, there's a motorcycle scene... I've said enough. Just watch the original that probably didn't get royalties from Rambo

In my opinion this was the only worthwhile film in the series and takes on serious issues. The rest are absurd 80s action nonsense.

Ironically, I did just shoot Rambo 3 because I kinda need to so I can get most jokes in Hot Shots 2. That one is definitely the weakest of the first 3. Just generic action movie with no real standout moments.

They made this movie to pay respect to PTSD veterans suffer and how they are mistreated and also the last part where he describes how they were spitting etc its regarding people there in USA disrespecting military members and blaming them for killing civilians, babies saying that USA should not have been involved.
but they knew nothing about the war like that north part of vietnam which was a comunist part wanted to take over south vietnam and they were killing everyone who didnt accept them and their politics, and the south vietnam asked for help so australian forces, and US forces along the defence forces of south vietnam fought and USA fought and didnt leave the war because then thousands of people would be killed by vietcong so they fought uintill they had to leave the country, when the war ended north vietnam took over they executed thousands of people who worked with USA and who didnt adopt their politics they killed all political oposition, had prissons similar to gulags in ussr or concentration camps in germany and its considered one of the worst crimes ever commited.
and there the north vietnamese commited some of the worst crimes in history like all kinds of torture, keeping usa slodiers and civilians in feeces pools, torturing them and letting their wounds infect so they would not die from them killing them but from disease and wounds, booby traps poisoned by snake venom and fall traps and tunnels where US soldiers would go in and didnt know them and in the dark they would just get bitt by a snake left injured to bite someone passing by or killed by a hidden soldier.
Very tragic and sad people in usa dont know what people there went through and just started judging by creating their own political narrative.
