    When putting roller or ball bearings on a shaft, try putting the bearings in a plastic bag and in a freezer for a few hours. When you take them out of the freezer, the inner bearing race will contract enough to just slide them onto the shaft without having to hammer them in. Great video!

    Very clear & educational video which has taught me a lot. When you see other videos on the net showing tanks that have exploded with rust on the inside, I think you are very wise not to push it to its maximum pressure.

    I like everything about this except for two things. You painted sealing surfaces on the pump and you doused your plants in deisel. Other than that, a tremendous improvement.

    Remember
    1. Do not paint surfaces under sealings
    2. Do not install bearings like in this video

    • @Omegadoomship
      @Omegadoomship 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      1. You can under if you have a proper ventilated enclosed setup with fans and filters. This would be better than outdoors because it would be free of dust and wind. But unless you have a paint booth setup, it ought to be done outdoors on a good day.
      2. Hammering on the outer ring on a bearing is a good way to damage it. I find the best way to install a bearing is to use a deep socket or metal pipe that fits perfectly over the shaft and sits on the inner ring. Then you can either hammer it or use a press.
      3. I wouldn’t be too hard on the guy. He did a lot of things correctly for the most part, and sure there were a few head scratching moments. As an engineer and mechanic, sometimes you’ve got to use what you’ve got to complete a project to the best of your abilities.

      3. don´t paint the heat exchanging parts :)
      4. don´t place the piston rings openings facing to the same side
      5. Check the tank from inside because of rust
      6. If it works, don´t give a shit ... well done

      @@Omegadoomship Both of you are forgot the 120 degree angle between piston rings gaps and disaligning piston rings gaps with geometrical axles of piston pin. And, IMHO, compressor oil is not optimal solution for the compressors with oil sump. My 2 piston 400l/min compressor is running with 5w40 API SN motor oil, such as i use in my car.

    I have watched a couple of your restoration videos now and I am impressed with the level of detail you go into. However, I wanted to see what you did to check the integrity of the steel air cylinder which as you know, are prone to internal rusting over the years and have the potential to crack and explode. I did not see you doing any checks for rust nor cleaning/ internal treatment on the cylinder. Can you comment on this? Thanks

    Tip for putting on bearings way easier: put the shaft in the freezer for a while and warm up the bearing a little bit (hot air gun but be careful if yoyr bearing isn't rated for sutch heat) the bearing will just fall on the shaft and will be immovable with bare hands in not even a second.
    How do I know this? It did this with all the bearings in my motorcycle engine and it worked great.

    • @fubar5884
      @fubar5884 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most certainly, but I guess that price could vary widely depending on region. You could pick up a small compressor like that around here new for 250-300 USD. If you searched craigslist or Facebook, you could find one for next to nothing or trade. Hell I've seen folk give them away if a part breaks or they bought a new one, either give it to someone who asks or put it by the road with a 'Free" sign on it. 2$/kg is almost like buying scrap, but the heaviest thing on that is the motor and compressor, take those off and that tank would probably weigh 20 pounds or less.

My worry is that it looks like there is no earth wire. I do have a couple of questions please. What was the total cost including the original $166 and how much would a compressor like that cost new where you are? Where did you find a replacement con rod? It looks like you are experienced in engine rebuilding as not many people have their own piston ring expanders. Were you able to get the machining done for free? as I’m assuming you may own or work at an engine reconditioning shop. Lastly, are you in Pakistan as I thought I heard calls to prayer in the background. Thanks Stuart 🇦🇺

    As a compressor engineer thinking of cost to the customer,, this machine would end up in the scrap heap.. But it's an ideal project to take on, if you have nothing else better to do with your time.

    29:12 that constant hiss from the head unloader means theres a leak from the MPV/non-return valve. it should hiss but reduce to nothing in a short time, rather than what its doing
