Final test tenth set boring head on Brown&Sharpe milling machine

  • Using the tenth setting boring head on the standard milling machine did not give as good results as the head when used on the jig borer. I believe it is because of the more precision ball bearing spindle in the Moore Jigborer. The mill has produced better results taking deeper cuts loading the heavy Timken Bearing spindle for a more reasonable .0005" hole tolerance.
The vintage Criterion tenth setting head holds tenths tolerance on a jig borer but not on a standard mill where it plus minus .001" Boring heads with .0001" adjustments are not usable on this vintage machine tool. A part is best roughed out on this machine and any very close tolerance boring or hole locating finished on the jig borer with holes left undersize for that
Next video I show end measuring rods and how I will adapt them to the milling machines 3 axis movements, this is an ancient solution for precision table positioning for milling machines and other machines in a non-production environment that may not warrant the expense of a digital read out.
Thanks for the donations, it is keeping this educational channel going!

Don Dyar thank you for your expertise👍some of us are learning from your vids like a mentor that we dont have👍👌🇦🇺(the scale loupe blew my mind, I didn't know....)

You are very welcome, those scale loupes are really great and not too expensive.

H i Don. The loupe is cool, and could you put a 1-10th indicator on the boring head so you can see the adjustment when you make it? Thanks

I have used an indicator with mixed results adjusting boring heads on standard milling machines. I found with this mill it obtains better finish and accuracy taking deeper cuts then what may be normal on the Jig Borer and I can hit plus minus .0005" pretty easy on this mill, but to get any better it will take another operation like honing. Thanks!

A Pratt & Whitney R6 would be smaller than a Monoset, I think.

New mic sounds good Don. It seems with machine tools no matter what they are going to try to drown out all sounds around them. But you sound much better fro sure and don't have to yell.

A knowledgeable viewer sent me this Rode Microphone and it seems to work very well if I attach it to me. Making videos around and while normally working on machines is more like sports action where you have to pay attention to the machining and have a camera there to catch it in a rough environment. The camera and microphone set up I am using is what some dirt bike and mountain bike riders use. Thanks, more to come with better sound
