Henry, never apologise for showing your authentic self. I for one don’t see staged, I see a man who has found his true passion and wants to share that passion - for photography, for the beauty of the outdoors and of the natural world. That passion shines through every video. Keep doing what you so obviously love doing and we’ll keep watching.

Do you know what keeps me coming back to watch your channel week after week ? I could say it's the lovely scenery , I could say it's the photography tips , I could say it's the shared experience of feeling like I'm on the trip with you , and all of those are true , but the stand out thing for me is your honesty , integrity , passion , all rolled into one .... no pretentious bull , no prima Donna look at me I'm the best , just raw enthusiasm and honesty , hi , I'm Henry Turner i love hiking and taking beautiful photos , come with me .... I love that , your passion is very evident , showing your emotion instead of hiding it , whether you're feeling great or feeling jaded , it brings a reality that others lack .
We all know from our own experience that sometimes it's not the perfect photoshoot , the weather , the light , the journey, fatigue , etc all conspire against us , content creators that only show the cherry on top and not the whole cake with the slight burnt base , they're lacking a bit in integrity in my opinion , or maybe integrity is not the right word , maybe authenticity ?
I like the way you tell it how it is ! Keep being you . 👍

This says it all . Only thing to add is that I agree . Memorials belong in a grave yard . Not in the wilds . Or at sides of roads . Glad I’m not the only one who thinks like this .

I’m not a fan of memorial plaques either, although they are the least problematic when it comes to stuff like that, much worse are flowers left in plastic bags, the flowers eventually die but never get removed, I’ve also come across people leaving cards, soft toys, mugs and the other day I came across an a4 laminated Christmas message to someone’s dead parents stapled to a tree in the Peak District.
I often go out with camera and never take it out of bag, it used to annoy me but it doesn’t bother me now, enjoying the walk is all that matters.

Henry totally agree about the plaques. I too live in a beautiful area of the UK and constantly see memorials being put up in woodland and attached to trees which infuriates me. My father recently died and loved these areas. As a tribute to him we scattered his ashes in his favourite place surely a much better way remember our loved ones

  • @ootnaboot2
    @ootnaboot2 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

I totally agree with you regarding the plaques. I don’t mind seeing one which records a tragic incident such as a plane crash etc. However I cannot walk along the seafront where I live without more and more benches appearing with plaques on them. In my local park there are remembrance benches throughout. Two of them are always covered in bunches of flowers, nobody can or would sit on them. I go out into the countryside, park or seafront for my own mental health not to constantly be reminded of death. We all have our own tragedies to deal with without seeing others every few steps. I can visit a graveyard for that if I’m so inclined.

Anyone who watches you regularly will know how passionate you are, and the emotions you show are real and never staged. They are also very infectious, and you have certainly inspired me in my short time in landscape photography. My special place is Norfolk, it's beauty often makes me stop and I get a lump in the throat, especially when it's time to go home. As for memorials, there's a place for them, but far too often they are of the kind that just leaves a mess after. Plaques are ok, to a point, a park bench or the like, but not out in the wilds.

Totally agree regarding the memorial plaques.
Human beings make a big enough mark on this planet already.
I'm very conscious when I'm out in the wild to leave no trace.
Why would I want to leave one when I'm dead and gone.
I can understand family and friends may wish to remember and mark a place they know was special to you in life but there really is no need.
Like you said, you will never know as you'll not be here to know it see it.
Bit morbid maybe but I see death as part of life.
It comes to us all. We really need to make the most of the time we have and do the things we love while we can 💯❤️

  • @explorist5
    @explorist5 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

100% agree with you on the plaque issue. It’s becoming an ever increasing issue and not just in areas of wilderness. It is entirely selfish on the part of those that place them. A view or beauty spot may well have had a meaning to those commemorated but it could also be special to hundreds of others for a variety of reasons. Placing a plaque effectively stamps ownership of feelings for the area.

Another great one Henry. I agree that memorials are not ideal in places like this. Who exactly are they for? The person being remembered, or the person doing the remembering? Why do they need this here in order to remember them? Can't they remember them without it? It's certainly not so the rest of us can remember them, because despite having their name, perhaps age, whether they liked it here or not (etc), we didn't know them, will never know them, so any memory of them is void. I'm not trying to be mean or cause offence in any way shape or form, but in reality, all it does is spoil the unspoiled for their own (selfish?) reasons without caring anything about those who follow. Please people, stop doing it!

In addition to loving your beautiful photography, I love that you are not afraid of showing your passion and honest emotions. There is something so stirring about nature and I can totally identify with your emotional reaction because I often feel overwhelmed by the stunning scenery and conditions all around me. That’s why nature and landscape photography is my favourite genre. I totally agree about the plaques, etc. One of the first “rules” I learned when I started hiking in the beautiful Rocky Mountains close to home in Alberta, was “leave no trace”. I would be mortified if someone left a plaque commemorating me in nature - I would comeback to haunt them!

Sir, like you I was totally blown away by Scottland. I was stationed at Holy Loch in 1986 and with camera in hand shot everywhere I could. I will return as part of my retirement. Also, on the subject of "this doesn't belong here!!" One Bazzillion percent agree with you. As any hiker can attest, there is too much graffiti, destruction, and far too often artist rendering in nature on trails. Mother Nature should be the only artist out there and we should observe it by only leaving footprints afterwards.

I'm a 64th swiss guy andAt the age of 17 I traveled 3 weeks to Scotland. Since then I have made other trips like New Zealand but I still have in me the emotion I felt when I discovered these Scottish spaces. I keep my fingers crossed to be able to return to this country one day. I understand the emotions you feel. 2 days ago I was at the "col du feu" certainly the place is less wild near Geneva but the view of the mountains with a constantly changing light made me whirve. I could have spent hours looking at this landscape and finding subjects but I was not equipped enough for the cold and snow. This video reminds me of this day, it's another story. I don't know if you will read me to the end but thank you for these emotions. See you soon Henri.

I think there's a time and place for plaques. In a manicured park, installing an extra bench as a tribute to someone who volunteered at the park is a win for everyone. The deceased gets recognition and public gain facilities. I've also seen some mounted on precarious cliffs where hikers were lost which seems appropriate. A little history, some recognition, and a warning to others to watch their footing.

A great area to hike and some fabulous hills that get overlooked because the giants of Torridon are so close by. Enjoyed the hike and the photos. I'm ambivalent about memorial plaques. Those two were small and unobtrusive but you are correct; if every hiker/climber had one they'd be everywhere! Personally I think the bothy might have been a better location for a memorial - epecially if they'd put it on a donated seat!

I'm exactly the same as you now at 70. And, thankfully now I'm aged enough not to care one whit what anyone thinks. But politely. 1) [The Plaques] There is to be no trace of me when I have left the trail. And certainly not some plaque glued to a boulder. 2) [Tears] The hand of God upon the face of nature is always a caress. Then, you and I come upon his work... alone or in a group, so very natural to cry, I know I do. In my Sierra Club Era, at or just above the tree line, a dozen of us out of 20 stood like a band of daft Meerkats wiping our eyes with a hankie. 18 years old, 52 years ago, we looked and each other with teary smiles standing silent where the hand of God still caressed His earth. Long live the Fells, great to be back home!

Personally don’t mind tributes of love in a natural space, makes it interesting. Like it or not man leaves his mark everywhere, just like the bothy you went to. On Dartmoor there are a couple huge slabs with passages from the bible inscribed in them. Also there is a tribute to one Nigel Duncan Ratcliffe a war hero at lydford (I did a video on it) and it’s beautifully poignant.
Great following your journey Henry, I’m a big fan of your photography

There are times when we all need to stop, get off the treadmill, and just appreciate who and what we are and how we fit in with our natural surroundings. Deep breath, smell, listen, hear. Cleanses the soul, it makes us who we are. Thanks Henry.

Honestly, being emotional about a place is not uncommon. As a soldier, I would come home from a combat deployment and break down when I landed and the feelings were very overwhelming.

I agree with you about the plaques. If anyone were ever to commemorate me, I would want them to make a donation to the upkeep of a beautiful trail or spot, or an organization which takes children or the handicapped out to the spot.

Henry, it is exactly that... your passion for Scotland, for your photography, for the landscape... and we are the ones who should thank you for allowing us to accompany you on your many journeys to places we will never be able to see in person. To see the depth of your feelings is so special... to see just how much you love the places you take us and yet you still lug your gear and make the extra steps back and forth to allow us to feel as if we have hiked it with you. Thank you Henry! I am forever grateful for you and your passion and enthusiasm for sharing what you see each week! Hugs Henry! A most appreciative follower in central Mississippi, USA.

Thanks again for another inspiring video H👍🏻. I totally agree with a couple of points you made. Walking somewhere for the walk or walking somewhere to take photos. I think of as them as taking your camera for a walk(photography) or walking with your camera(walking). Secondly is having an emotional attachment for the superb, glorious locations you find yourself in. I've not walked in Scotland but plenty in the Lakes. Some days the views have stopped me in my tracks and I could have kissed the ground I was standing on! Keep up the great work and making Thursdays special 🙂

The uniqueness of each photographer and his or her artwork is what makes channels as yours stand out Henry, and when you add the passion of feeling your way around with each trip, it is a complete circle in creating every image with those feelings that come through the images. A natural state of being! 👌👌😊😊

I don’t care about random structures in the wild unless effort was put in to make them look good. I also don’t care about graffiti on public property if someone actually put time and effort to make a good piece of art.

Hi Henry ... another great video. Always enjoy your videos. You take great photos which I think are fantastic but it's always been as much about the places you go and the banter on your walks that I enjoy as well as the photos. I remember when I started watching your channel that I commented that I never go out to take photos, I just go for walks and cycles and always take my camera with me and always take lots of photos. I know it's a bit different for you because it's your job too, but I have seen a gradual shift in emphasis towards enjoying the day more as opposed to the pressure of capturing an image. (And your photography hasn't suffered as a result). The addition of MFT to your quiver and less faffing about with tripods has also helped. 😉
Keep up the good work. 😊

You're such a genuine guy, a real pleasure to watch, I really enjoy your channel because of your honesty and authenticity.
I think the thing with the memorial plaques, it's probably done by the families of those they have lost, and they draw comfort in the fact the memorial is in the place their loved one was most at home. If you go to places where people have died on a mountain, there's usually certain memorial spots, with crosses up and various memorials tied to the crosses. It's just one of those things, death is hard for families, they don't usually think, oh, this is going to litter a beauty spot, they would think, my loved one loved this spot, I want all the world to see the significance of said person memorialised in a beauty spot. Just a different perspective to chew over 😉. Thank you for your hard work in producing these videos, so we can come on your adventures with you

on the point about memorials I think unless its to note something that happened in that place like a battle or historic event, I think we don't need them in wild. For memorials to people i find it better when they put the plaque in say a visitor's centre or rangers stations etc where there is already man-made structures to fix them too.
