Henry Henry Henry , I think I speak for a lot of people when I say you could talk about the sole of your wellies and we’d tune in, yes it’s a photography channel but if we ( the viewer ) don’t engage with you ( the presenter ) then it’s a fact of life that we don’t watch, I could name quite a few photography channels on here that I’ve viewed but don’t return to because the presenter just isn’t engaging enough or chats rubbish, you on the other hand have an engaging personality which is why we tune in 😁, and no this is not a proposal, I’m very happily married 😁😁

Returned to this video after a couple of months just to see the hip pack. I was recently diagnosed with neck arthritis and think this would make a good option to go light without a photo pack on my shoulders and neck. At 62, it may not help, but it certainly can't hurt. lol

Lovely images and views! Quite the hike, but well worth it. Prayers for BlueJay’s ongoing health and no further blue smoke. Enjoyment is in the journey. The photographs are always the icing on the cake.

What a nice pleasant day out Henry. Dont always need to go on great adventures with tons of gear, this made a nice change and still with some shots.
The Blue Jay could just have been cleaning out its particle filter if it has now stopped smoking. Diesels sometimes do this especially if you have been doing a lot of short local runs recently. A good long drive usually sorts it out.
I still preferred a backpack by the way.

Glad to see the OM-5 back! I broke mine and can’t wait to get it back. I have an OM-1 too which is a great camera, but I love the little OM-5!
Got myself one of those Apidura hipbags and quite like it. I don’t worry about a wet camera with my OMSystem gear. Might be a different story for multi day hikes, but for a day outside I trust the weather sealing of my gear.

Henry, I'm glad to see you're back in your enviroment with your fav Olympus. Great to see it back in use again. Regarding the blue smoke coming out the exhuast of your van, it is probably just a small amount of engine oil that got into the cylinders, I wouldn't worry about it but you should have it checked out while you can, black smoke would be a bigger problem... I like your honest review on the hip pack, looks like a winner! Cheers, sir!!! 🍻

  • @squonkyman

Firstly, I do hope the van is OK! And regarding your comments about being concerned if you don't bag any photos during a trip : that's fine, I enjoy and learn from hearing your thought processes and sometimes that will result in "err, no that doesn't really work too well". I always enjoy seeing where you're exploring and listening to your insights, advice and whatever is going through your mind - even if that is just a huge Cumberland sausage butty 😁 And you know what? If it doesn't work out for you on a given trip then it just reminds me that we can all have those days where things don't go as planned. It's all part of the pleasure of pursuing photography - come back another day and hopefully it will all click into place.

Great video as always mate - fellow Lake District photographer here. I also shoot Nikon and OM System but I just find it easier to have the OM5 out all the time on a sling. It’s the most weather sealed camera I own so there’s no need to keep it tucked away in a bag. Hence I prefer to simplify things even further and not bother with the bum bag as the camera is tougher than I am 😂

  • @Walt.2013
    @Walt.2013 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Another fine presentation, Henry! Don't change a thing! As far as packs and bags go, I use a Lowe 250 sling pack and smaller Lowe hip pack. I also like to travel light and have but 2 lenses and my Z50 and lightweight monopod/hiking stick. The sling pack has an upper and lower compartment, the lower for camera stuff and the upper for water, snax and extra clothes. Don't do long hikes any more. The hip pack is to keep my camera and whichever lens I am using handy, and for cleaning cloths and snax. I think you are on the right track with your lighter setup, though I think you will miss a hip strap on your backpack once it is fully loaded. I find keeping the hip pack centered makes bending/stooping down difficult and tend to keep it off center. I find that my creativity quickly goes out the window if I carry a lot of stuff and get tired. I last longer and am much more comfortable going light!
At the risk of being longwinded, I also occasionally use a regular backpack and some Ape Cases for my camera gear if I feel I need to carry more clothes due to potential wet or cold weather. Not very often, though. I am planning to try using an umbrella to see if that can be of use. I've seen other vloggers use them but have yet to try it myself. It seems like too many things to hold, but will give it a go, nevertheless.
Sorry for the tome! Warm regards! ;-)

Intereresting, I use a sling pack / waistpack combo as I am unable to carry a rucksack due to implanted ICD.
Thanks to Henry for the video, and the kit review, great to see some stumbling about in the local area, rather than heading out to popular spots. Inspiration to get out there and do some stumbling..👍

  • @garycasey7986
    @garycasey7986 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

It took me a long time to realise and accept that, for me, camera rucksacks just do not work.
So, for hiking/landscape photography I do the following; my rucksack is for my hiking gear with the exceptions of carrying a tripod (if I take one) and a small pouch containing camera cleaning gear and a multi Allen wrench tool.
My camera and two lenses plus spare batteries and memory cards go in a shoulder bag that has its own rain cover, a Kata for my Olympus kit or a Lowepro for my Nikon kit. I now use wrist straps rather than camera shoulder/neck straps and a PD Capture clip to keep the camera to hand unless it is raining.
All I am saying is that this works well for me.

  • @Hangiinjohnny
    @Hangiinjohnny 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don’t know if you’ve looked at it, it is pricey but when you were talking about bags and what you were looking for it popped into my head. The mindshift rotation 180 backpack might be right up your alley. There’s three sizes 22l, 34l and a 50l and they all have a rotating camera pack similar to a hip pack and separate from your main bag. It allows you the same freedom and quick access to your camera without dropping the bag but keeps the weight on your back and hips and in one bag. Like I said it is a decent price tag but comparatively it’s not bad when looking at other camera bags, if you haven’t already might be worth a look.
There was no need to apologize, the more we use gear the more we learn and our opinions may change after different situations come up. You learned something new and passed that information along.

Henry, I am curious about the point at which diffraction kicks in on the 4/3 sensor. i know the drop in f-stops between a full-frame and my aps/c, but wondered if there was much of a drop on the Olympus. Admittedly, as I understand it, the DOF on my smaller sensor at a lower aperture has an equivalence to a smaller one on full-frame. So my f9ish is about max before difraction kicks in, but is equal in DOF to about f13 on full-frame.
Sorry, if that sounds confusing, but i hope you get the point of the question.
Another enjoyable vid. I always like going out on your adventures, and the scenery and conversation will always compensatefor there not being a photo - Trevor

I broke my OM5 (knocked down the tripod and destroyed the viewfinder) last week. Sent it in for repair on Monday and it’s already on the way back to me.
Found it really easy. Fill out a form online, pay for it and instantly you get a shipping label to print out. They charge you a fixed price for the repair (different for each lens and camera) no matter how much there is to fix. You might pay too much if it’s just a minor repair or it can save you money if it’s a lot to fix.

Howdy Henry. I really enjoy watching your videos, but I do have one concern. I would like to know what type of precautions and preparations you make whenever you go out on your photo shoots in regards to being able to call for help, in case you run into difficulties and can't walk back to your car. Do you have good cell phone coverage in places where you hike, or do you have some sort of satellite phone you can rely on? Also, do you tell anyone where you are going before you go on your excursions? Anyway, I worry about you a bit, because you are out there in the hills by yourself. That sort of discussion by you could make a really good episode for your channel. By the way, the gray smoke coming out of your tailpipe is most likely coolant leaking into a cylinder. It happened to me on my old 1986 Toyota 4Runner. I had to replace the head gasket with a beefier one.

Yes, we all dream about them, but their reality is very far off…. Let’s keep these in your mix please. I got a lot of inspiration out of it. Thanks and as always, keep snapping!

This videography is photographic and you commentary is useful. The views you show as you hike and your thinking about the area is useful even if you don’t actually find a fixed photo to capture. Thanks for sharing your adventures and your thoughts.

I've been lately exploring a concept of carrying non photography equipment in a backpack, just like you, and having photography stuff in a shoulder bag attached to a big padded lowepro waist belt. Basically what you have, but made of separate elements, so I sometimes switch bags depending on the trip. I attach a tripod or binoculars to the belt as well. That makes long walks really enjoyable and efficient. I also often wonder how people carry their gear, as this is a huge part of the experience, especially in the elements!

Thanks for another interesting adventure Henry! I hope your van is OK! I was quite intrigued by your hip pack, its pretty good to have your camera so close to hand, I still like my Think-Tank back pack with that waist pack built-in but I have recently switched to the Think Tank belt system as it's much more flexible and configurable and means you don't need to have a specific back pack at all any more.

I’m so grateful to you showing us your hip pack at this very timely moment! Am suffering a bad back after a shoot yesterday, and was wondering about a hip pack, having used them for snow skiing many years ago. I use an Olympus EM1iii, and EM5iii (my first Oly) and often use the same lens as you had in this video, or other MFT lenses. Generally take one camera, two lenses, and think this bag might just suit me, and get the load off my back. So many thanks, Henry, for this enlightening video! Just glad I didn’t have to climb the hill in this video. Would still be there🙄

I do have a backpack for when I go on bigger trips and want to take more gear, but for trips with less gear I have a couple of ThinkTank camera-holsters and lens-pouches that go on a hipbelt.
I have them for lenses and lens/camera combinations of different sizes.
Great for quick access to my gear and having an extra lens or two with me to change between.
I can even take my long lens with me for shooting birds on my largest hip-holster!
I don't have any real space for anything else in it though, so I can take a spare battery and a lens cloth but no drinks and snacks. For that, I need an extra bag.
Good to see that the Olympus is back!

I like gear reviews/suggestions based on field experience. I'm considering using a vest with lots of pockets in the field with a bag/pack when I go out for similar reasons. What I like is not the specific gear but how you are using it gives me an idea of how to solve the field problem of both protecting and accessing the gear.

What’s your preferred lense to go with the Olympus set up for a day out walking and exploring ? Recently bought a little Olympus so I’ve no excuse to not have a camera out on the hill. I’ve got a 14-42 but find it’s not got enough for those longer shots

Been having a play with Luminar Neo for a few months now and certainly agree that some of the one button AI tools are great.
Pleased that you've got the OM5 back. I've recently moved to an OM1 and am loving the light it is and the image stabilisation.
Another excellent video, love all the chat. Thanks again, Henry.

Another good video. I had an old camera bag that had the water proof cover with it, so I took this off and keep it in my main bag. I put it over my camera and lens when it's raining. It works really well.

I started watching your channel when I was looking for some youtube videos for the Nikon D7200. I look forward to your videos every week. If you do not get any pictures that would not be a big deal. I think most of us at one time or 50 don't get a photo that we deem worthy of sharing. Keep up the good work.

Hi Henry, thanks for another grand day out. I do hope that the Blue Jay isn't too poorly, with any luck its dpf or dirty injectors, most of which can be sorted without too much trouble with a spot of fuel additive or better still treat it to a tank of non supermarket juice evey once in a while ( Shell or BP ) to let their fuel additives get to work! Good to see the "OM beastie" is back in the land of the living, but as for the hip pack, being one that looks like "a bloke that swallowed a football", its not for me ;-)

Greetings Henry. Nice little tip on the "waterproof" hip pack. The pooling water is something that seems obvious but you just don't think about it...but you did! Something I'll keep in mind now. One of the big reasons I love your channel is that your so honest about your adventures and your photography, not to mention the great photos, inspiration and entertainment. That being said, I have to say that sky replacement AI feature in Luminar Neo is something I cannot abide by. Sure, it's "Photo Art", but, IMHO it's not photography. It's a lazy shortcut. If someone does use it, at least admit it's a fake sky if it's in a photo being displayed.

On my last outing, I was aboiut an hoir from home, when the dashboard of the car lit up like a christmass tree. Stopped , had a look at the engine, wich ran quite like normal, drove on for a bit, and then managed to clear all the failt codes and they stayed off!
It was probably snow-slush on a sensor or something. But I was nood in the mood to get anything done, and just got myself home.
Well done getting the job done!

At the very beginning you mentioned the moisture problem in this plastic bag. I had the same with my hiking backpack.
Easy solution: a diaper. Just put a baby diaper in the bottom and everything will stay dry. 😊

I use a Think Tank Speed Changer V2 with Olympus E M1 mk3 and 12-40 f 2.8 lens. The bag is just big enough for this combination. There is enough space left for a spare battery filter and mobile phone or power bank. Although it will not carry much gear it is ideal for a waist bag with a backpack. I do a lot lf seascapes and it is great clambering around rocks with a small pack and with 6/7 stops of IS and live ND there is no need for a tripod. Minimalist and yet does almost everything for basic photography. I originally purchased when I had an smaller Olympus but it has had more use than any other bag.

When I first started photography I had my d7500 with a 18-200 kit lens and a 10-17 tokina and it was light weight. Now I have the bulky d850 with the 16-35mm f4, 50/85mm primes and the sigma 100-400mm. I like it but I would love to get something lighter for long hikes… I’ve been thinking about a Sony a6700 with the tamron 50-400mm and a wide angle…. Hopefully that would fit nicely in a hip pack!

Hi Henry, it's great to see you've got your olympus back, I'll check out the bag when I've written this message. I love watching your and other photographer's vlogs but I must have been the most nieve person out there, what I mean is that it's only been 18 months to 2 years or so that I've come to realise that the photos that most photographer's show have been so post processed that they are not the picture that was taken, but have become an art form of the original. I know that some photos need "tweaking" but some photographer's really go over board, and to keen novice photographer's like myself when you see an awesome picture that you would sell a kidney to have taken yourself only to find out its virtually nothing like what was there it leaves a bitter taste. Sorry I'm rambling now.....
Keep up the great work Henry, I still love your vlogs weather you take photos or just chat to us 👍

Do you ever worry because everyone on TH-cam knows the colour of your Van that someone will break in and try and steal some of your stuff in your car I love the fact that you include your videos are real with the car in them, but I would be careful from a security perspective having my car in the actual videos that you shoot. I'm about to embark on TH-cam and I definitely will not be having my car all my locations showing on my videos because I simply don't want people stalking my car and knowing my car knowing that there might be something in it that they can steal sadly, this is the world we live in. Just have a think about that mate and be careful. I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone but break-ins are common.

If you've ever used a paper map & compas you'll know that they never lie to you. Our feeble minds on the other hand....that's a whole different can of worms. Easy to follow a "path" that isn't a path.
Bought the OM5 for the very reason that you were using it - keeping things light whilst out walking. Trouble is I still take the kitchen sink as well. Maybe it's time to shed the weight. Great video as always.
