You forgot his most important achievement as a career diplomat. He was the one leading the Indian delegation that managed to create the current thaw in India-US relations. He is the man who negotiated the massive landmark Indo-US Civil Nuclear Cooperation deal in 2005. Remember that just 7 years before that, US had sanctioned India for nuclear tests we conducted in Pokharan.

Big reason for Modi 's popularity barring his nationalism is his background. Left his family young to become monk , worked on ground on spreading nationalism and social reforms , entered politics at 50 , industrialised a desert state into booming economy. Now 20 yrs into politics, No family , No true wealth, Not even 1 holiday , took half day leave for his mothers funeral and returned to work. Pushes his colleagues hard like himself. He works close to 15 16 hrs a day. And puts nation first always.
The problem is Pakistan and China has occupied legitimate Indian territory that is signed in India’s name legally plus has been India’s territory for always in human history and no one says anything about “ rule of law “

The across nation rail gauge issue has been solved. Now countries use the Gauge changing system to move trains from one standard gauge into another.
Last I read, they were still switching rail wagons when gauge changed on this China-Europe railway. And that this wagon swap operation was a major bottleneck on the route's operational success. Although variable gauge bogies exist, I think that is mostly only used in Europe, no?
Anyways, with global warming, Russia is eying opening an alternate route through the Northern Sea. Although they'll need a lot of nuclear icebreakers. Once that happens, Chinese reliance on Malacca (and our leverage over them) goes down even further.

As for the malacca dilemma, if chinese are less threatened by alternative route buildup then its good for us too as they will be a little less scared of us (strategically speaking) so maybe they may consider us as a not so big enemy. But its just wishful thinking. Until the border issue is solved. Nothing is gonna change. Nothing. They will consider us a threat as long as we exist. Due to our historical influence over them in contrast to theirs on us.

The belt and road is a sort of a multi-layered strategy. Even if it doesn't get built it still gives china leverage over those countries. And the thing is that china's loan might be predatory but unlike the west they don't come with a list of social and human rights requirements. Just with a clause that probably says not to badmouth china. So even in failure china is starting to look as a better ally or partner for many countries. Even without pressuring them into paying loans. A lot of those countries don't have a choice either. Either they start looking at the west that has already wronged them in some way or agree with china. But it has to be impacting china's economic growth. And china also looks softpower. That's an edge india has over china.

With the kind of war that is currently going on, no matter who wins, the victory will be pyrrhic. DPA channel made a video yesterday comparing the situation in one sector of the front where Russians have apparently pushed in an entire Army Group there (I think Army Group is defined differently than normal, because I don't think it is possible to put an Army Group in that narrow a front unless you were doing Napoleon era warfare).
Anyways, that video covers how much the frontline has changed over the past two years. And frankly, it is giving me WW1 Battle of Somme vibes. In Battle of Somme, a million soldiers were lost and only 7 miles were gained. Appears to be the same for this war as well.
Lessons in this for us Indians should be that the current Indian Army approach of investing in Strike Corps assets (at the cost of basic infantry gear, artillery modernization and ammo production capacity) is fundamentally flawed. Although the emphasis on ISR is exactly what one would expect, and thankfully the Indian Army seems to have taken this lesson well, even before the Russians invaded, but especially after that.

Although, if you want a more non-Indian take on this, that even though was not Indian, was almost 99.99% accurate, I'd suggest you watch the video that Aussie channel "Perun" did on India this New Year. I think its titled "Indian Defence Strategy - Forces, Potential and Procurement Disasters." Although its long, it is still deep, not surface level, and is rather accurate. Stuff that we Indians know but doesn't look like many foreigners knew before this video.
I don't care for these kiddish videos about string of pearls or necklace of diamonds, etc. These are fancy words, but not really that important in the grand scheme of things. So many of these moves are being made right now, and some of them get a lot of press coverage and fancy terms, like this string/necklace of pearls/diamonds etc while some moves made get almost no fancy words nor a lot of press coverage but are arguably more impactful. For example: Post 2020 Ladakh Standoff, Indian Army withdrew 1st Strike Corps from the Pakistan front, and moved it to the China front. This, in my book, was a tectonic shift. Let me explain:-
The largest Indian Army field formations are Corps (one Corps is three Divisions in size. For reference, entire British Army can field two Divisions at most, and Australian or Canadian Armies can only field one Division each unless they mobilize reserves). There are two types of Corps in Indian Army as per Sundarji doctrine (created by General Sundarji): Holding Corps and Strike Corps. As per the doctrine, Holding Corps are meant to hold the line, absorb enemy attacks and try to create big breaches in the enemy's own line through limited use of offensive formations (like Armoured Brigades). Meanwhile, Strike Corps are the big hammer which have an Armoured Division and even an Artillery Division. They are meant to exploit the breach created by the Holding Corps and pierce deep into the enemy rear area, cutting down enemy supply lines through use of swiftly moving armoured spearheads similar to the Blitzkrieg of Germans in WW2 or the US Army's VII Corps during Desert Storm (although a little different because Indian Strike Corps have Artillery Division, which US Army doesn't have).
Pre 2010s, India had seven Holding Corps and three Strike Corps aimed at Pakistan and only four Holding Corps and no Strike Corps aimed at China. Then, by 2010, due to China's improving border infrastructure, Indian Army realized the need for two Mountain Strike Corps (MSC) aimed at China. Government approved raising of a single MSC by 2013 and thus the XVII Strike Corps was born. Took till 2020 to get it up and running, it is assigned to North East India and Sikkim (although if you ask me, it is aimed at either cutting off Chumbi Valley or defending/counter-attacking in Tawang). The second MSC was shelved in 2013 due to funding issues.
So at time of Galwan clash in 2020, India had One Strike Corps and Four Holding Corps facing China. But during the standoff, China started deploying more troops from other fronts towards India. So the Indian Army pivoted away one Holding Corps and one Strike Corps away from the Pakistan border to the China border.
And this year, India has announced raising of a new Holding Corps for Uttarakhand sector (which till now was only held by a single Division). So now, the Army's strength at China front stands at Five Holding Corps and Two Strike Corps. So, from only Four Holding Corps to Five Holding and Two Strike Corps in just 10 years.
*_That is almost a doubling of combat power of Indian Army on the China border since 2014. Yet this entire thing that happened does not have any fancy name and no videos are made about it._*
Situation is so bad for China that the ground forces it had permanently assigned to its Western Theater Command facing India were already barely enough to match Indian Army's strength in terms of combat units, and now, with these new raisings, China is outnumbered and has to redeploy forces from its other Theater Commands, thereby weakening Chinese Army posture on other borders. And even after doing all that, it only manages to match the Indian Army strength on the frontier. In order to actually attack us, that too in the Mountains, they'll need a lot more troops.
Sorry, I just realized I went off on a bit of a tangent there. I'll stop now.

So India is very similar to US in that it's very divided between right-wing (intolerant) and left-wing (tolerant) politics, with Hindu nationalists not very different from Christian nationalists / supremacists in the US. You'll get prompted to watch a host of jingoistic videos, without much rigor. It's hit and miss how accurate and thorough they are (impossible to really cover everything properly in a video). It's very important not to take anything as true or authenticated / verified by confirmed sources much less academic historian rigor. Keep an open mind and watch a lot of stuff from diverse sources (including taking recs from people with divergent views).
