Hi Mary, thank you for your opened hearted message. Having also gone through ‘hitting rock bottom' an old man, Bernard, told me two things: 1) When you hit the bottom, you can firmly place your ladder and climb back up. But be kind to yourself and don’t climb too quickly. 2) Don’t allow people to feel sorry for you, let them admire your recovery. You have built a large family of people, that love what you do and who you are, it’s our time to return that love and support. Take your time and go for it, xx

Thanks Mary. The trouble with most social media is that it can make people feel a failure because their lives aren’t ‘perfect’ like the people that post stuff. Personally I find this honest and truthful video should really help people. Everyone has their downs and ups. It’s good to see that sometimes. Take care and looking forward to seeing you on the trails again ❤

Mary, I did watch all of your PCT vids...twice. I was inspired even more by your journey when you revealed your ongoing health issues. You pushed through despite your challenges. I retired early and moved near the AT so I could section hike it. First year I sprained my ankle and was sidelined for 3 months. This year I fell down my stairs and after 6 months of PT, I still am not able to backpack. I know the frustration! I did go through a depression for sure but started to focus on what I could do....just like you are doing. I sure am learning how to roll with the punches (lol) and know when I get back on the trail I will love it that much more. Hang in there! I am sending healing energy your way. Here's to our Happy Trails whether we are hiking or taking some rest time. 🌈🌄🙏

    Four Tips for you:
    1. Improve your balance. I know you`re promote the Cascadia Brooks, or the other Vegan boots. But the problem I see with those type of shoes is that your ancles arent improving, due too the lack of natural growth and strenght of your feet. There is a reason for Vivo barefoot, Xero Shoes and even altras are good. You need to train, your feet, back, knees and ancles in a different way that you are used to. However the transition period need to be graduually, eitherwise it can cause more damage.
    2. Kinda relates to to the first issue, but its more for the migrane. But its important that you practice barefoot, earthing / grounding. Buy a grounded sheet blanket too. It has helped me a lot. The more you do it the more health it you will be, and you will need less medicaments.
    3. Important to get some inspiration to get good meals. If you eat to much of a thing, you should take a break. If you eat to less of a thing, eat more.
    4. Mental Health is improven by nature. Only taking a walk and pause meditate is good. Another academical tool that worked for me is MBTI and RIASEC studies.

Sorry to hear about your injuries and the mental anguish that stems from them. As someone who has often dealt with depression, I can empathize with you, especially the health benefits derived from being in the wild, and being temporarily deprived of them due to injury. I just turned 69 years old two days ago. I tend to think of life as yin and yang or opposites. One could not know joy without also knowing sorrow. It is the darkness that shows us the light. It is cold that allows us to experience warmth. There would be no mountains without valleys. Embrace all of it because these emotional states are part of being alive and human. I appreciate your authenticity. Take heart, dear woman, the clouds will part and you will see and feel the sun again. Thoreau said: "In wildness is the preservation of the world." The wild in you answers to the wildness in nature, for both are one and the same. All is One and One is all. May you and solace and health in that knowledge.

Thanks Charles and I’m sorry to hear about your struggles too. It’s very true what you talk about with the yin and yang of life, temporarily not being able to do certain things really do make you appreciate them even more when you can. 😊

Hi Mary, so sorry to hear that. Regards your headache, I really sympathise with you. I suffered for years. Had all the tests and scans under the nhs but they had no idea. They recommended taking antidepressants. A route I didn’t want to go down.
When holidaying in Spain things got worse, so I paid to see a private German doctor he recommended acupuncture. Three sessions later no more headaches.
Apparently tension in my neck muscles restricted blood flow to my brain.
Since then I occasionally have more acupuncture when I feel pain coming back.
    Might work for you?
Good luck for the future. I so enjoy your inspirational videos.

Thanks you for your candid talk about your setbacks. We all have them at one time or another. Mine are age related=I'm about to turn 70 this next year, and that comes with a number of issues. There are simply some things I can no longer do comfortably or enjoy, so those have gone by the wayside. I'm currently getting PT so that I can resume distance hiking this spring and summer here in the US, including section hiking the AT again, hiking the Foothills trail as a thru-hike, and then the Benton Mackaye Trail afterwards. Ambitious planning than may not work out. You have far more serious health concerns than I do, and you , at face value, deal with them with grace and good humor. Your admirers will continue to support your efforts, and listen to chat about setbacks. Don't worry about us. Give yourself the time you need to heal, follow your doctor's advice, and just enjoy every day. We'll all be around to cheer you on. :)

We were so sorry to hear of your injuries, Mary. I can identify. My husband and I hiked the Coast to Coast in June of this year, and soon after our return home came down with Covid, which for me developed into Long Covid. I spent months struggling with insomnia, anxiety, neuropathy, and fatigue, going from hiking an average of 12 miles a day to struggling to walk half a mile. But good has come from this experience. I've gotten better at accepting and trusting that God does indeed work all things to the good. I'm finally feeling like myself again and am up to two and a half miles with hills now, and I'm so very grateful. We're hoping to hike the Coast to Coast again next year to celebrate my recovery.
We have so enjoyed the videos of your walks! They are filmed so beautifully and your beautiful smile is such an inspiration. Will keep you in prayer and hope you will soon be out in nature doing what you love.

You’ll slingshot out of this into a new exciting stage. Best thing about getting the handbrake pulled on you is that it’s a shot of perspective that is priceless. My handbrake was emergency open heart surgery two years ago - triple bypass. At the time it was all-encompassing, debilitating, frightening, and humbling.
In March of next year, I will be undertaking a three month ultra distance expedition to raise funds for the Heart Foundation and hopefully set a new Guinness World Record in the process. I could have stepped back from so many things but my attitude now is that I’ll go out on my terms if I’m going to go out. I’ll say yes to as much as I can and relish every second of my life, my family, my friends and my opportunities. I know we don’t know reach other but your warm soul shows - I really enjoy your content and travels. Question is… what can you turn this change into? :)

Ah man, sorry to hear it. Started hiking a few years ago to help with anxiety/mental health and about 5-6 weeks ago I tore a ligament in my knee. A month later I tried to do my local climb and after a few km, it was agony again. Had to limp back to my car, feeling dejected and broke down in tears in my car. Haven't hiked since as it starts to twinge after a few km. Sometimes you just need to step back and get back to basics. I'ts just round the block and daily stretching for a few months for me. I've been watching u-tubers like yourself in between times to keep me motivated and inspired. Have a big internet hug and feel sure you will back at it soon.

jesus mate join the club ! yesterday was the first time in ten months i been out to the woods for a lil camp fire, and i've not even been able to get out in the back garden for the last three months.
it's all very well people saying "get outside for your mental health" or " just push yourself, go on".... life ain't like that !
we do what we can do.... still gotta try, if the circumstances allow.
migraines.... my mrs has botox injections in her head, 33 of 'em, every ten weeks, last seven years, they have certainly mostly reduced the severity and regularity of her migraines x

Hi, TH-cam suggested your channel, probably because we have similar content. We have more in common too. I have chronic migraines/headaches. I too have had this for 20 years. So I feel your pain. I have tried everything including triptines. I am now not taking anything. I found that in lockdown when on furlough I didn't have a migraine for 12weeks! So I know that current job is my trigger! Like you I have been doing TH-cam with the hope I can do this fulltime and stop my migraines. The only thing I could recommend for pain management is CBD oil. I really helped with running, recovering from a injury and migraines. I only stopped using it due to cost. I hope you start feeling better soon and can get out on the trails.

I feel for you Mary. I broke my ankle in 2020 as well as having knee surgery later in 2020. The worst part of the recovery was being stuck indoors in bed for many weeks. I admit that I felt sorry for myself. It was hard to be patient. The mental aspect was much more challenging than the physical aspect. It was a long recovery. My partner built me a raised bed garden, so I could start gardening even before I was off crutches. I was just so happy to be outdoors. I also took up watercolor painting in 2020. I decided I needed a new non-physical hobby, so that I'd at least have something to distract myself from wanting to be outdoors. And now that I've recovered, I am hiking as much as possible, knowing that someday I may not be able to. I hope you find more ways to enjoy the outdoors during your recovery.

I’ve been having migraines for 60 years. 3 days in front of a toilet bowl each time. 30 years ago, I took Sumitriptan as Imigran, which worked for me but not always for others. Lately I’ve had a lot of fake drugs purportedly from China. I now will not shop in some outlets. I don’t know what else to suggest to you, but to just hang in there and tell people to leave you alone when you’ve got one. Their concern just makes matters worse. A migraine is NOT a headache. Non sufferers should try eating cold ice cream really fast if you want a vague idea of what one is like

Thanks for making this video. I'm sure there are others out there in a similar situation. If I remember right, you cracked a rib on the PCT. Headaches are no fun and migraines are worse. My sister has them from time to time and she is on some daily drug that seems to help. With her, bright light can trigger them. She never faces the windows in a restaurant to avoid the brightness. And cracking your ankle when running...I was never a runner but I can walk and maybe you are at that age when you'll need to consider not running any longer but walking is still something that is healthy and beneficial. You have all your commenters out there in YT land like me. I'm sure they all feel like I do and will be sending you positive vibes and prayers. Awe Mary, it doesn't rain, but it pours. You take all the time you need. I've only been following you for a few months, but you have the most infectious smile on TH-cam. I can't relate to the migraines but can understand. My Dad used to go to bed for 3 or 4 days with the curtains closed and couldn't lift his head off the pillow. So I understand. But to feel that a lot of the month is horrible. With the GI issues too life has really dealt you a bum set of cards recently. I hope Derek is being the gent he is and looking after you too. If you want to laugh at someone and you are bored one day then look at my last vlog. You know when you are in the middle of nowhere and you have that accident and think...... have I got reception? Who knows I'm here? I had that day. The pain killers will really knock you off your feet if you aren't used to them. I remember the first time I had codeine 30mg. I was asleep in 10mins and was out for 4hrs. Stronger? If it was Tramadol then they really knocked me sideways. I had to give them back. So, plenty of rest, let Derek pamper you and know that no matter how long it takes, we will still be here when you are fully recovered. Don't run before you can walk. Take care of yourself, and you and Derek have as great a Christmas as you can. Time to think of number 1, you!!! You will get there Mary. Merry Christmas to you and Derek, and you still have the most infectious smile on TH-cam. 🤶🎄🎅❤️

So sorry to hear about your situation I can empathise with how frustrated you must feel and I wish you a good recovery.
Watch out when your ankle stops hurting that you don’t roll it again as it stays weak long after it stops hurting.
I have permanent instability in my left after tearing the ligaments in it several times and can’t trust mine anymore so have a plastic splint I wear if active in trainers or shoes and tho it’s a pain in the backside and looks naff as hell it gives me more options than hiking boots with strong ankle supports.
Trekking poles are a best friend of mine as help with mobility during later recovery as they help with balance and I always have one just in case I have an accident and need a crutch to walk.
Wishing you a better new year ❤

I watched your Cleveland Way videos a while ago but watching this one I can totally empathise. I do lots of golf course videos and then started on Wales Coastal Path last year. Love doing them as its kind of like having company when you are on your own. However I cracked my ribs stupidly trying to jump a 6ft stream to avoid a big detour. Ive been scraping the walls and fed up with no golf or hikes.just as ribs were healing got a virus similar to covid and been stuck inside for 2 months. Im now working out a fitness plan to get back into it. My initial plan next week is a weeks tour of Scottish Highlands on the train with just a gentle walk round each town where Im staying and fitting in a few pubs just to get back to beer drinking again. Looking forward to your future vids and your smile returning as you are an inspiration to others . Im hopefully gonna do West Highland and Cleveland Way this year

My wife is a chronic migraine sufferer, so I am very empathetic to those travails, although I have not experienced them myself. Hi Mary. You're an inspiration regarding the walks. Let nature take it trail. I know because I did 3000' Munro's such as the Aonac Eagach and then found it difficult with my legs and found it hard to do even 400 yds. I found out I had Lymphadaema and arterial arthritis
Like yourself I love walking and also swimming. After 2 years I'm able to do a mile. I think it's coming even though I feel it's slow. I'm determined to get back on the hills like I did but I'll have to stay within myself. I try and have faith and think about folks like Douglas Bader who achieved so much even though he lost his legs. I've met great people as a result of walking and comments here say the same thing . Mary, I discovered your channel fairly recently and have been loving all your videos. You are inspirational. You are a teacher. You are a motivator. Thanks for your honesty Mary. It’s ok to not be ok. As someone with the nickname ‘Calamity Jane’ believe me there have been too many occasions when I’ve been where you are with the frustration of not being able to get out and do what you love. You’re doing the right thing by planning for when you can and thinking of all the wonderful adventures to come. This too shall pass and you’ll be out there again very soon. Be kind to yourself and give yourself time to heal. The world will still be waiting when you’re ready.

I'm so sorry about your recent struggle with illness and injury. You are very brave to share. Please know that so many people care about you and wish you well. I understand the frustration of an ankle injury. I fell down the stupid stairs in my own house three years ago and broke my ankle in two places. The crutches and the boot are so annoying! They make the smallest things like picking up around the house or making a meal so hard! But you will recover and you'll be back out there in due time. I hope you have access to physical therapy. I went a couple of times a week as I healed and it helped so much with whole body recovery, helping maintain cardio fitness and working on balance, as well as flexibility and strength in the ankle itself. Best wishes to you and your family for wonderful holidays!

    Dear M\ary,
I'm a 71 year old guy who only just recently came across your videos whilst researching a Peak District trip. I was entranced by your gorgeous, life-enhancing commentary as you strode along, as if every day, every little detail of a walk, was a brand new delight to you. You genuinely made my spirits soar with the love of life you exude. So now, after watching this utterly sincere, moving description of what you have had to endure, I am tearful. I am old enough to know that what we see on the surface is only part of the whole. In some cases, my love of artists has been trashed by discovering the views they hold; the wretched things they have done. In your case, the reverse is true. Whilst deeply saddened by discovering your travails, I can also say that I now admire you even more, Mary. Because you have shown that the big-hearted woman of your inspiring, joyous walking videos only hints at the depths that enable you to reach out to so many people. In a world of fakes and deceits it is a privilege to share your warm, human response to your oh-so-troubled times. You're a treasure, Mary. Hang on that thought. From an old guy who's been around and knows the real thing when he comes across it. Take care of yourself, luv.

@@MarysOutdoorAdventures Well I play softball and baseball pretty much all week long with once a week bowling tossed in and I hadn't tried Cannabis since college pretty much and I find the CBD/THC *you need some THC *the part of the plant that gets you high - in order to let the CBD do it''s job correctly and kill off pain. I used it during a shoulder rehab and it worked well.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Last year I made the decision that in 2023 I was going to walk 1400 miles. I started training and everything was going well (I'd got my mileage up to 12 miles a day, and was well on track to hit my 15 miles a day goal by the end of this year).......then I got covid.
It has knocked me back so much more than I expected (I have asthma and some other conditions). Most days I can barely manage to do 3 miles (I have an indoor walking treadmill - I live in Scotland), and on Sundays I don't do any miles, just nap a lot. It is really frustrating me because I felt like I was doing really well before. And part of me is terrified that I won't be able to do my walk next year. 😔
I really appreciate you sharing this video, and sharing the truth of how things have been rough for you this year, it gives me hope, and helps me feel a bit less alone. You used the word frustrating as well, and it really is.
Good luck with your recovery, and I hope you and Derek have a wonderful Christmas.

Bloody heck. Yes. Would say anyone pretending to have a ‘perfect life’ is fooling themself..or fooling others! Reality is that real life includes suffering and how we deal with the discomfort, suffering, frustration is what defines us as humans... You are brave and strong. Really wish you well. Hope you have a Happy Christmas, would say that Christmas is about making the best of simple, real, humble and peaceful. Perhaps our difficulties help us to be humble and appreciate what we have. Keep on Trucking!

That’s something I admit to never having tried (not since being at school). I’ve seen a few artists out on my hikes and often looked over and thought what a lovely peaceful way to spend the time. I’ve only ever focused on photography to be honest but perhaps I will give it a go one day 😁

Wow! This video couldn't have come at a better time for me! Sending so much love and support, and applauding your achievements!!! I was typing and at 7:36 I stopped typing, because I was going to advise exactly what you started talking about: diet changes , water, etc., because those fixed my problems too. LOL! Good for you! Mine was un-diagnosed food sensitivities (not allergies) to weird stuff like ...almonds, broccoli, etc. (who knew??). I needed to hear you say, "I will be out there again. I will hike again." I recently broke a foot and dislocated a shoulder and your words meant so much to me!!! I am going to start my list of the places I will hike as soon as I am healed. Happy Holidays! And thanks again so very, very much!

My mum used to have migraines that bad the doctor used to give her morphine injections.
She’s been a bit better past few years but every now and then mums “ got the sunglasses on”
I’ve had two migraine in my life usually following the same scenario, skull crushing headache, followed by throwing up and the 12 hours of sleep. Back to normal the day after.
Syndol is a brand my mum swears by, there is two types the original recipe is the best.

Hiya Mary, so sorry to hear of you injuries and deliberating migraines. Firstly I'd like to tell how much you inspired me when you did the PCT, I have since done the WHW and the Fjallraven Classic in the Cairngormes , both fantastic although nowhere as long. What I'm trying to say is that although I am ;) much older and have had some serious injuries needing surgery time does mend the body. So best of luck and health in the New Year and a Happy Christmas.

Hello Mary, I'm sorry to hear about your difficult time. Regarding your headaches, many years ago I had a client who suffered something like you appear to be. She was young and getting married and couldn't focus on the joy of it at all. I did some work with her neck and shoulders and around the back and sides of the head. I freed trapped nerves in the neck but also in the micro muscles along the occipital ridge - the bottom of the skull. she found it very painful and I had to work slowly and with repeated sessions, but the pain subsided to the point where her headaches were twice a week rather than every day, all day. This may not be your problem but i wonder if you've seen an osteopath that will release trapped nerves and do gentle massage?
I absolutely applaud the many steps you've taken to reduce the pain and I am impressed at how that is helping you... Anyway, I offer this with Love and wish you all the very best,

I understand completely, I have suffered chronic daily headaches for 30 years 24/7 since having 2 brain bleeds, currently have a cavernoma, pain from the scarring of the bleeds, classical migraines a few times a month and chronic cluster headaches, so I understand exactly what it is like

For some reason the universe was trying to keep you inside or perhaps trying to show you a different perspective. I can completely relate with the chronic pain. I also get headaches every single day for decades as well as the occasional migraine. It can definitely be hard to take care of yourself in those conditions. I love that you found lifestyle changes that work for you and it's incredible that you're able to get out there backpacking. This is one huge reason why I was coming here to see your pack suggestions because pressure on the shoulders is such a dealbreaker. If you're ever forced inside again a side channel of your diet and lifestyle changes for sufferers of chronic headaches could be extremely enlightening and might get more of us back out into the work with you. I love that your positivity shines through even through the frustration. :)

Thank you for sharing your reality. I totally empathise! I fell on trail in the Vancouver Island mountains in August 2021, broke my tibia and fibula, got helicoptered out, had surgery within a couple of days, and then had a long period of rehab until early Spring 2022. It was so frustrating not to be out hiking for months, when normally I hike 2 - 3 days every week. This past summer I got back to small hikes on easy terrain before a planned second surgery this past August (to get the metal work out of my leg!). Finally, I am beginning to feel almost back to my normal (although much, much less fit!) self.
Feeling frustrated and de-motivated, feeling low or depressed, and dislocated from any normal sense of who you are, and feeling like you are letting yourself and others around you down - these are just ordinary, human reactions to what you have been (and still are) going through. I can't even imagine what it's been like for you trying to navigate this difficult time "in public"!
Anyhow, I so glad you are feeling your "mojo" returning, a flicker of excitement as you begin to see your future self back out there doing what you love. Planning - that's always a good sign!
So, no need for apologies - your authentic self (like everyone's authentic self) is always to be listened to and respected -and thanks for publicly modelling the courage to do that!
