I was scared hiking alone after I saw a bear. Even though the bear ran when he heard me, I was still paranoid miles later, and was constantly looking behind me. But the next day it was as if I had never been afraid.

I met one bear that bolted as soon as it was aware of me, and another that did not care at all, and completely ignored me as I walked by. I was also stalked by a mountain lion that I could not see but I could hear. That was scary, but I let it know I knew it was there, and it left me alone.

I solo hike as well and the comments and reactions sound so familiair. 😊
Maybe a good tip as well for when you are doing a long hike is to add points to your route and number them. Leave the same map with someone else and send them a message at each number. If something happens they know where you last have been.

Most excellent advice Mary. I worked in, and lived near Yosemite National Park for many years and was always amazed at how unprepared, or under-prepared, so many people were. I was an extreme, off trail, wilderness, solo hiker, but took a course in orienteering (map& compass) before striking out on my own. No one should be afraid of being in the great outdoors, and with your solid advice, they should have many a happy trail.

Wonderful advice, Mary...very straight forward and practical. EVERY time I hike, my family tells me how crazy I am for hiking alone. I used to be more afraid, but I've truly learned to see backpacking as a metaphor for my life journey. The trail is my escape from this crazy world, my alone time with God, my "get real" encounter with myself. It teaches me the value of suffering well, the joy of reaching summits, and the sheer beauty of finding oneself in the wilderness. Keep making your videos! Great job!

Well done. Important to point out that women (and others) are most often attacked IN TOWN (cities, rural areas). Confidence and proper preparation is the absolute key to a safe and exciting adventure.🌿

Hi. Great video. A couple of things I'd like to add.
Everyone I meet on a hike ask
    1. Are you hiking alone?
    2. Where are you from, heading to, where I'm going to sleep, etc.
This is small talk 101 on every hike. This is a check to see if I'm a trustworthy individual. If I carry my shoulders on my ears, people might avoid me.
Last thing. Tall people walk faster than shorter people, because they have a longer stride. Just because a bigger person is closing in on you, is probably because you're the slow person on the escalator. Make room and walk with one ear free from your headphones. You'll be less scared, and the other person less annoyed.
    Thank you.

    Wonderful advice Mary.
I’ve always loved my solitude that’s just my personality, and even though I can be sociable my preference is to be alone (but never lonely) so hiking, biking or any other activity can be most enjoyable if you take the precautions that you so expertly advised.
Happy trails to all introverts and extroverts alike, there’s nothing like enjoying the great outdoors no matter what.
Thanks for a very meaningful video.

My moms advice a long long time ago. If you dont trust a situation whit a stainger. Pretend you are calling someone (of even better, be on the phone with somebody). People will think twice before attacking you if they think your in direct contact with someone.
Thanks for all the tips Mary!!!

I done heaps of solo hikes down here in Australia. Years ago a mate and did hikes but I only saw him at the start, lunch times and when I get to the campsite for the night. During one up at Mt Feathertop I thought damn it, I'm hiking alone. So the next one I did by myself was great - I didn't to hike quickly just how I wanted to, when to have lunch, stops and then get to where I wanted to camp. Now, over 30 years later I still hike by myself. In the next few weeks, I'm going do a solo snow hike up to Mt Bogong the highest mountain of Victoria. I've been up there many times and looking forward to getting there again. I use a GPS and carry maps, compass and PLB so if I get injured and can't hike out - I can have support. I also make sure one of mates have the planning for my trip in case something really bad goes on and I can't contact or the PLB get broken he can call the Police and advise my route, where I was planning to camp etc...staying safe is my most important issue for my sole hikes but it's also nice to meet other people on the track.

Hi Mary. I have just come across your channel and subscribed. I am a complete beginner to hiking and am presently preparing for my first hike which I am also doing solo. I am a complete novice and your videos have helped me so much. I am also going to be purchasing quite a few items from your recommended links. I have recently bought a backpack, clothing, hiking boots and trekking poles and I'm now deciding on where I want to go for my first hike. Thank you so much for this motivating, inspiring and informative helpful channel. I would love to see you do a video on how to store hiking clothing and equipment. I'm never sure whether to hang or fold certain items, keep them in stuff sacks etc so this would be really helpful. Such a great channel and I am so pleased I came across it😁💛

So sorry for the delayed reply Paula, I have been taking some time off! It was so wonderful to read your comment, it really did mean a lot to me. That is so great you are getting into hiking, it is such a wonderful feeling to get out there and you will find your confidence grows each time you head out. Regarding my gear, I tend to just store it with all my other clothes in the wardrobe and my drawers, hanging the tops and coats and folding thermals. My bag and trekking poles also get stored in a cupboard, making sure they are fully dry before putting them away. If it has been raining or really cold I always make sure to fully extend the trekking poles when I get home so they fully dry out and then collapse them once they are dry. Hope this helps and thanks once again for your comment and subscribing 💚

I've been hiking alone all my life since I was a kid. As a child or adolescent we often don't think about potential consequences, and grow bolder. I took many unsafe risks, so by adult-hood I barely thought about "what if", I just did whatever inspired me. Even at 50 yrs old I took unwise risks. In retrospect I think it was crazy, but I had a lot of good experiences. Hiking alone is fine as long as you stay conscious and prepared enough to mitigate the most likely of possible mishaps. The most important consideration is how far away are you from help if you are unable to get yourself back from the trail. If the trail is heavily traveled with a good chance of meeting other people, you are generally safe.

Hello again Mary Mansfield, just wanted to say thanks for posting a very interesting and informative video on TH-cam.
Some great tips too thanks 😀
I myself often go walking (or hiking) as you call it, alone and sometimes do feel a little bit nervous at times, especially if it's a trail I'm doing for the first time and don't know it well.
Plus with myself suffering from a mental health illness, ( sorry, I really hate admitting that), but it can sometimes make me feel scared and lonely going out on my own at times, but I always tell my dad where I'm going and how long I'll be, and always phone my dad when I arrive on the trail I'm doing, and when I'm on my way back home, so he knows I'm safe.
I used to go out walking local routes with my mum in the past, but sadly she's no longer with us, so I go walking alone most of the times, sometimes I have a good mate who I go walking with at weekends, who lives in Sheffield, and we go out to different places in the Derbyshire area, but due to recent lockdown and travel rules, I've not been able to meet up with my good mate or go walking with him recently sadly, but I've been in contact with him over the phone and he's always interested on the local walking trails that I've been on and he tells me about the trails he and his wife have been on through the lockdown period.
One thing I really love about my good mate John, when we meet up and go walking, we always have a good natter and a good laugh too, which helps the day go along well, and whenever we finish our walks, we always end up in a local cafe for a nice cup of coffee ☕ 😀 which is our treat for the days end.
But for me it's a put your feet up treat and have a good rest treat for me!!! Lol 😆
I remember when I was diagnosed with mental health issues, which I hate admitting, my doctor at the time, told me to go out walking, start off short at first, then gradually go a bit further, he told me that, it good for my mental health, because it stops me worrying about everything and helps me to shut out the negative points in my life and let's me think about other stuff while I'm out and about.
And can I tell you something Mary, he was right, because after that chat with my doctor, that's what got me into walking, and I really love it, plus it gets me out in the fresh air and open spaces and enjoy the wildlife too which I enjoy.
Like today, I've been on a local walk and did some train spotting at the same time as the walk goes past the midland mainline, anyway while I was sitting down on one of the fishing platforms having my packed lunch, I was watching a Heron fishing for his lunch lol and it was amazing to see how patient those birds are, and how they do it.
I'm now at home with my feet in a bowl of soapy water soaking my feet after a really nice long walk lol 😂 but sore feet doesn't matter, the fact is, I had a lovely day, the weather was sunny and warm and I really enjoyed it. 😀
The walk I did today is called. The Avenue Country Park in Chesterfield.
    All the best from.
    (Mike Devon Boy)
Take care my lovely and happy walking or hiking as you call it 😄

      Hi Mike,
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and share your experiences. It means a lot to me that you have shared this as I know it will be of great help to others who have gone through similar problems, so never feel you have to say sorry for admitting the issues you have faced. It is people like you that help others who are suffering, letting those who are struggling know it is okay to talk about it and how beneficial it can be. It is wonderful to hear the benefits you have felt from walking and hats off to your Doctor for suggesting it - I hope more Doctors recommend it. It is great hiking with others too isn't it, I like a good natter as well as the solitude. I love how you explained how being in nature lets you shut out the negativity and think about other things, it really does have healing properties doesn't it. The simplicity of the wildlife and how they act really does put things into perspective.
There is less than a week left now until we can go out on hikes and walks further afield and I hope you enjoy meeting up with your friend again for a wonderful day out. Take care of yourself Mike and thanks once again for sharing 💚

Great video, Mary! Just to underline a couple of things you said, mainly about preparation. (1) Know your gear and whether you need to upgrade. I just spent a few hours today doing a complete inventory of my hiking and camping gear, since I hadn't been out for a few months. I found out I need to pick up some things. If I had waited until the last minute, I might have had to make do. (2) Find out about your route -- what is the water availability for drinking, is the trail likely to be flooded out or iced over? Are there likely to be too many people to hike safely or to enjoy the experience? (3) I carry a paper map for every hike I go on. I have also used a satellite receiver that worked with my cellphone in the back country (Wyoming), and it proved really useful. There are also navigation map apps that will use GPS to show you where you are in relation to the trail. (4) Be aware of two stealthy killers: dehydration and hypothermia. Both can lead to disorientation, falling and injury, or getting lost. I once had to self-diagnose hypothermia during an unseasonably cold backpacking trip (daytime highs in the 20s/-10s). I knew the symptoms and had to admit to myself that I needed to get down off the mountain. Finally, as Mary says, don't try to be a hero. Don't take on something you are not physically prepared to do. Build up or scale back over time, depending on experience and age and conditioning. If you have a big trip coming up, train for it. Treat your body like your gear -- know what it can do and prepare well ahead of time.

      Hi ya John 😊
Well said. Could not agree more !!
Excellent highlighting of the things Mary covered !!
Imho, you're 2 stealthy killers are underrated, they do not get the attention that they should. I live in Arizona and people often come here from other places to visit and hike only to get themselves airlifted out. Or worse--- packed out !! In the summertime the daytime temperature and the night time temperature are two different things they can swing easily as much as 30 or more degrees people are not prepared for that they're out there with their shorts t-shirts running around dehydrated already before hypothermia sets in . I have only passed through Montana not ever living there but I believe that the same situation exists can be very warm in the daytime very cold at night.
I'm glad to hear you used wisdom and new when to back down so that you can be here to pass on these words today. Cheers to you my friend 👍🏽👍🏽🤠

You can do it! Start off small and on well marked trails - even busy ones to start with. Then gradually venture out a little and if it helps do a linear walk so you are retracing your steps.

As usual a job well done Mary !!!!
And based on the comments that I've been able to read you certainly have touched upon something !!
Clearly this is something that can be expanded on.
I think EVERYONE WHO IS GOING OUT CAMPING be it in a auto,
Especially if you're going to be off the beaten path. Or, backpacking !!!
Ask themselves what if ??? And if so how would I..... ????
Am I or my auto really capable of doing this.
Yeah, ALOT can & should be shared and contemplated on this subject.
Btw Mary, I just wanted you to know in my opinion you have really done a great job even during lockdown of keeping things interesting and moving forward !!!!
    Thank you !!!

It has certainly been a challenge trying to get the balance right and find relevant subjects when I can't go off to places to film. I've done hiking with big groups and alone and with my dog I think it's not as bad as many think as long as you semi know what your doing getting hurt in the middle of nowhere scares me more than animals GPS coms are great the first few nights sleeping along are creepy but after a few nights that feeling subsides it helps doing trips with others to give you an idea of what 1st aid stuff you'll really need and having an encounter with wild animals with others who are experienced is super helpful I would be much more worried coming across a bear if I hadn't done that with experienced hikers before hand self defense could be helpful or just get good at running as that's always easier than fighting two legged threats in my opinion that's a very rare thing to happen most people that are deep in the woods don't want problems I suppose that can vary on how far you are from civilization
Don't be afraid to make noise or sing songs to yourself or dog definitely make it as hard as possible for you to walk up on animals without them noticing
Practice using the GPS coms I did not learn proper map and compas skills but I'd like to learn just in case I almost dropped my phone in a creek and then I would have been SOL outside of my garmin watch which wouldn't have helped me find water to the extent I would have needed

I use to hike alone for 10 years until I fell and injured my ankle 😫 I wasnts severely Injured but at the time I thought it was. Also my blood sugar dropped out of nowhere ive never had this issue before . But everything became blurry . I thought I was going to to die worst case I was alone . Although my husband new where I was the hike was 12 miles and no signal. The whole time I saw no one else on trail. Anyways after that I dont hike pr backpack alone it was scary realizing I was going to die alone and it would take about 12+ hours for someone to find me .it sucks becayse I have no one else to hike or backpack with but that experience scared the crap out of me . Now I just hike very populated hikes and nothing that will take more than 4 hours . It's not the same i miss long hikes

Oh my gosh Mary... You read my mind! I'm planning a solo 6 night hike this fall right here in my backyard, Riding Mountain National Park. I want to do it just to get that sense of independent accomplishment ya know? Anyway, just did our first over night hike of the season on Friday and we were discussing this and my anxiety that I am already feeling about it. There are a lot of bears in this park, apparently the highest concentration in any of the Canadian National parks. I've been googling tips for hiking solo etc just to make me feel better...and then bam... Here's your video. :) Btw, I plan to bring a speaker and listen to podcasts while on trail (unlikely to see other people, will not use it if I do obv), I carry bear spray and a Garmin Inreach...and will be investing in a pee bottle so I don't have to leave my tent at night, because my tent is impenetrable by wildlife lol /sarcasm but legit for real.

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures

I know a lot of people worry about that Natha, I would just advise that if they get too close face them and outstretch your arms slowly. Don't ever run and avoid staring them in the face. Never surprise them. Also before you enter the field, look for the escape routes.I know it sounds daft, but I always talk to them in a calm voice - this probably calms me as well as the cow! The biggest problems seem to occur when you have a dog or if they have young calves - then I would recommend avoid them. I hope this helps😊

@@MarysOutdoorAdventures I was once (almost) attacked by a cow who was with calves, before I'd even got close to them. I shouted at her, made some fancy karate moves and she broke off the attack... but followed me close till I'd left her field. But this was an exception, mostly cows seem oversized, sometimes inquisitive dogs and they tend to run away if you approach them (because they are standing between me and the gate). Bulls are rather more dangerous, horses also.

These are good tips, but I really feel like backpacking in the UK would be so easy and safe that it could be done with your eyes closed lol. I'm being sarcastic here of course, but it really seems that humans are the biggest threat to safety there (other than ticks)? Don't get me wrong, ticks can give some serious infections, and people can kill you as well. But daym ... would it be nice and easy to not have to worry about animals that can kill you, and terrain that can kill you, and weather than can kill you, and getting lost for days in the wilderness like over here in the Canadian wilds. I feel like there's little risk of even getting lost in the UK, since there's such a high population in such a small area. Basically you walk long enough over there and your eventually gonna hit a road or coast or town etc...? I guess its all relative as I'm sure there's someone in Central Africa that would find backpacking in the Canadian Rockies to be childsplay compared to doing it over there lol.

My sense is (I've never done a long distance hike) that the PCT is somewhat safer than, or example, the AT where there are more people and many sections are so much easier to access by road. So you may need to buddy up for some sections while it might be perfectly safe to hike alone in other more remote areas.

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes I found that on the PCT a little, in certain areas I knew it wasn't wise to hike alone so stayed with a group.

      @johnalden5821 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have hiked on the AT for more than 45 years, off and on, and in most of the states it runs through. The vast majority of people are like-minded hikers and are friendly and helpful. Occasionally I have encountered some interesting people who seem a bubble off-plumb but essentially harmless. That said, the Trail has become more prevalent in the wider culture and we are seeing an alarming but isolated increase of incidents, some of which have been horrific. Tens of thousands hike on the Trail every year and it is generally safe, but yeah, prudence and caution are warranted, whether it involves giardia, ticks, bears, lightning or people.
