Piped & Zipped Scatter Cushions - Decorative Pillow
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 23 พ.ย. 2020
- Piped scatter cushions are a good staple for any curtain maker or upholsterer but getting them just nice can be tricky and those pesky zips cause everyone stress. There are also many different methods to the making, the way the piping is cut, where and how you join the piping, how and when you overlock the components and what shape you cut the corners.
I've created this video showing the making of two piped and zipped cushions.
1.) Rounded corners, bias cut piping joined on the bias centre bottom of the cushion, overlocked front panel after the piping is sewn on and standard zip with flap.
2.) Square corners, straight cut piping joined on the bias bottom RH corner of the cushion, individually overlocked components and standard zip with flap.
If you're here just for the zips the skip to 26 minutes in.

Wow.... that piping join was amazing. Thank you so much
Thank you for your lovely comment.
OMG! Piped cushions have always made me so anxious as I’m never happy with how I put in the zip but your method is bloody genius! Thank you so much!
You're very welcome 😊
I was having problems putting zip in,but after watching your video i did it no problem best video and found it easy to follow, thank you do much jan😊
Oh that's so good to hear. I'm really glad it helped ☺️
Excellent video...and love to hear the Lancs accent again, having travelled to Blackpool every year for 30 years! Thank you!
Oh I've not been to Blackpool for ages. Must make a trip there sometime soon 🎢🎠 thank you cut the lovely comment.
Watch tons of videos and this is the very best!! Thank you.
Thank you so much Tania, it's so good to get such positive feedback 😊
This is the most informative and interesting tutorial I’ve seen on sewing cushions the right way. Fantastic thank you. I’d like to a tutorial just like this but incorporating lining into the cushion as well as zips and piping. I’ll definitely be watching more of your wonderful work.
Yes, many fabrics, particularly hand embroidered or tapestry work requires a lining so I'll add that to the (ever increasing 🙈) list of tutorials I still have to do 😀
This is the bestest cushion making tutorial I have ever seen! Watched tons of time and eventually made my own. Thank you so much Justine xxx
Oh that's so good to hear and thank you for your kind commentses 😁 I'm really glad it helped 👍💛
hi there, i just wanted to say I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video to teach us how to do this, and you do it so well. thank you.
Thanks so much. That's so lovely to hear ☺️💛
I love the Lancashire accent. My mum was a sewer, Manchester and Cheshire all her life. Loving the instructions. ❤️🇦🇺
I always thought I had quite a nondescript accent until I started doing these videos.... now I can hear I have quite a definite Lancashire accent 😂 Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire had a massive sewing tradition but sadly it's no more 😕
Thanks for a great tutorial! I made my pillow cover along with you - turned out great! I loved how you moved along at just the right speed. Not too much talk but just enough!
Oh that's so nice, thank you Cindy 😍 I love the thought of you making a cushion along to the video 😊
Oh my goodness! Great tutorial. I learned so much! Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Also, do you cut your fabric the same size as the insert/ cushion ? Add a seam allowance? Thanks!
That's such a nice comment. Thank you so much 😊
Yes. Generally the rule is to cut the fabric 1" bigger overall for seam allowance, then use a cushion that's 1" bigger overall too so that it's nice and plump when inserted.
Thank you!
When I saw the length of this video I nearly skipped it, but it’s a lazy Sunday……I’m so glad I watched! I particularly like that each step is explained and where you need to be cautious and how to overcome problem areas. Thanks so much. You have a lovely voice as well, as my husband mentioned lol.
Oh thank you so much and I'm really glad it helped you...... and thank your husband for the compliment on my voice 😊 I've always thought I had quite a flat accent 😁
Thank you. An excellent, well conceived video from a true expert. Very generous of you to share your skills.🪡
Thank you very much, that's such a lovely comment 😊
Justine you are a star!. I can't thank you enough for your clear instructions and videos. I have successfully made piped tiebacks for the first time and now piped cushions with zips. I wasn't new to the cushions but I've never been happy with the zips. Now I am delighted with them
Many thanks. Anne Graves
Oh that's so good to hear Anne. It makes all the difference when I know my instructions make sense.... it can be a bit of a worry 😂
Just found this tutorial before I attempt my first piped cushion covers. Have to say this is a superb tutorial 👏👏👏
That's very kind. Thank you. 😊
I've watched about half a dozen videos on piped zipped cushions. Yours is the best I've seen. Everything clearly explained and shown. I think I am ready to tackle my first cushion. Thank you so much.
Oh great that's really good to hear. Thank you and good luck 🤞
Wow, this is AMAZING! I've always struggled putting the zip in and creating a flap - your technique is so much easier than the one I had been using. I am very grateful! Thank you so much!
Thank you Emily and I'm so glad it helped 😀
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. You have inspired me to get out and get some fabric for cushions!
I've only ever made envelope cushions and want to advance, this is by far one of the best tutorials for piping and adding zips. I think you are the only one who uses an overlocker which shows because the finish is impeccable. I love how you finish the piping like a lot of quilters do too. It is going to be quite a learning curve for me but it will be so worth it! Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Oh that's so nice Yvonne, thank you and I really hope you master the piped and zipped cushion making skill. It's definitely worth the practice. You'll have it down in no time I'm sure.... practice, practice, practice 😀
Brilliant demonstration of how to pipe cushions. I could not have managed without your patient guidance. Thank you.
Thank you Rosalind, I'm very pleased you found it useful 😊
A really great, useful video as always Justine. Thanks for sharing. X
You're welcome Carol, glad you enjoyed it 😊👍
Just sewn up my first piped cushion. Your instructions were invaluable and I'm over the moon with how it looks. Thank you!
Oh that's so wonderful to hear, well done and thank you for your kind comments x
I've saved this video and have watched it in segments as i go along. it's given me so much confidence now on how to make my own bias and piping. love this so much. thank you
Oh that's so nice, thank you for taking the time to comment and may all your cushion creations turn out marvelously 🤩👍
Omg!!! My piped, zipped cushions came out AMAZING 🎉 I followed your tutorial to a T and it works!😅😅 thank you for taking the time, much appreciated
Wonderful! I'm so glad it helped you ☺️
This is by far the best tutorial I've watched on this subject (and I've watched lots). You explain everything perfectly. I've been struggling with correctly placing the zip along the piping, so now will try again following your instructions. Lovely to hear a northern English accent too.Thank you so very much. xx
Thank you Claire, it's so good to hear that my way of describing things and how I do it is informative 😃👍
Best instruction I've seen yet!
Thank you Cheri that's so good to hear 😊💛
What a great tutorial! Thank you. So far I've made some envelope cushion covers but never the ones with a piping and a zip. Today is the first time I'm going to try it. By the way that overlocker is brilliant!😍🤩
I'm so glad the video has given you the confidence to try and make a piped and zipped cushion.I hope it turned out well.
Oh and I love my ancient overlocker :[]
It turned out really well and I made another one a few days later❤Thank you so much! Re overlocker I’m gonna start saving for one 😂
Oh fantastic, I'm really glad you tried it and it worked out so well 👏😍
I was very lucky with that overlocker. I bought it from a trade auction without testing it first but it was only £50 so was worth the risk and it really paid off well 😁
Gosh I love lucky bargains like this! Didn’t it pay off? You got a gem💎
This is such a great tutorial! I followed it step by step to the letter and made a great pillow as a result. I have saved this to be able to use it again and again. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much Joanne. I love that you were able to follow the tutorial so easily and now have a fab cushion to prove it 👏👏👏💛
I've been watching this wonderful tutorial from the end of work today, on and off all evening in little chunks. I've just got to the end of cushion no.1 and look forward to seeing you make cushion no. 2 tomorrow. Great job !
Ahhhh great 👏👏 I'm so glad you found it informative and I love that you serialised it 🤣.... It turned into a much longer video than I anticipated.... I just can't bear to leave any info out 😂🙄
I’ve got this on my tablet and following you, with pauses, as I sew, though I’ve watched it several times through first. I’m reupholstering vintage rattan chairs, attached round seats with welting and half round loose backs. Thank you so much!
Oh that's quite a challenge, good luck and I'm so glad you're finding the videos helpful x
This is a terrific tutorial! And your two machines are treasures! I’ve never seen an overlock that old! Thank you, I look forward to watching more of your videos.
You're very welcome. I'm so glad it helped 😊
Ha ha, it's certainly old. I've had several overlockers over the years, all of which were much newer but this one is the most reliable. It's also easy to repair so suits me just fine 🙂
Fantastic demonstration! You have made suggestions I've never seen anyone else do like paying attention to color and pattern of two sides of a join to make the join less obvious. Also putting the join for the cording off to one side instead of directly at the bottom center. These are details that makes a difference especially for a professional being paid for their work which I hope to do. I do wish I had your equipment; it runs so smoothly. I am going to look for other content you may have available and pay close attention. Thank you so very much.
Thank you Linda for such lovely comments. I hope you found some my other videos useful 😀👍
Very pragmatic and good teaching, thanks
You're very welcome Shawniqua and thank you for your lovely comment 😊
Wow! This is the BEST video about making throw pillows. Your camera angle is great, your audio is great, but what I like the best is that you show and tell us why you’re doing what you’re doing, and how to problem solve issues that we may have; e.g. if the 2 sides of the cushion don’t meet, why they don’t and how to fix it. (Just stretch the short side.) I have learned from this NOT to pin, instead use my fingers to hold things in place. I love listening to your voice and your instructions are so down to earth and easy to follow. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
Thank you Linda for such lovely comments. It's so good to hear that my video style works 😀👍 I hope it helped you make some super duper cushions 😍
Well, I have to work a bit more on the finishing of the zipper and the flap to have mine look as good as yours. 😄 I also wanted to tell you how much I love your accent, whatever it is. Listening to you is very nice. You’re very calm and relaxed and it relieves any tension about sewing the cushions correctly! 😊
@@lindaburton1633 good video l love it😅
Oh ha ha, what a lovely thing to say. I'm from the county of Lancashire in Northern England. We're a more grounded down to earth type of people in the North 😂

Thank you so much, I'm very glad you enjoyed the tutorial. Lots more to come 👍
I have made a ton of cushions but always avoided placing the zip at the piping as I could never get right (I'm a perfectionist!), this method and the way you demonstrated/explained was so helpful, I'm wizzing through them now and perfect every time. Thank you for sharing.
Oh that's so lovely to hear that it's helped you so much. Thank you for your kind comment x

Enjoy this very much! You are a good instructor,…you made joining the end of the piping look very easy and precise, I struggle with getting this right the first time
Thank you for your lovely message Heidi. It does take a little practice to get the join right but practice makes perfect ..... you'd think you would be good at piping with a name like yours 😂🙊
@@WindmillCurtainRoom I should be! YES!

Thank you so much, this video has been so helpful to me. Very clear instructions, just what I needed.
You're very welcome!
Excellent tutorial❤.Im sewing some cushions this week and praying it comes out perfect for client as it’s a velvet fabric😮
If you're not used to working with velvet it can be a bit tricky as it creeps under the machine foot so make sure you use plenty of pins.
a fantastic tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you 🙏 I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
Great video!😊
Thank you so much and apologies for the late response x
Fantastic tutorial, thank you
Thank you very much and you're welcome 😊
Fabulous tutorial , really love your supportive encouraging approach .. dabble in soft furnishings myself so totally loving your tips .. keep inspiring, your are a natural teacher :)
Oh what a lovely thing to say. Thank you
Perfect! I’m a soft furnishings maker, blinds and curtains mainly but always balk when they ask for scatter cushions!
Mainly it’s the zip I struggle with as I try and put them into a made up cushion.
Going to try your method next week! Thank you.
Oh I do hope it helps. It's definitely easier than trying to put the zip in once the cushion is made up.
Great tutorial, your really good at describing what your doing and why, thanks so much for sharing your expertise 😉✌
You're very welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 😃💛
I love your overlocker
Yes, it's a very old Rimoldi. It can be hard to get parts for but it's worth it as it's an excellent machine 🙂
Thank you for this tutorial. It all makes sense now of where I was going wrong!

Hi there - this is such a great tutorial, cannot wait to try the zip method. I would love a tutorial on ruffled / frilled pillows! I have made one before but not sure my method was the most efficient!
I will be doing one at some point, can't say when though unfortunately. The list is loooong 😂
This is SO helpful. Clear directions visually and audibly and no fancy terminology! Hope there are more video tutorials fro the Windmill Workroom!?
Thank you for your kind comments. There are plenty more videos to come soon 🙂
Would love to know what you're going to make!
