    I realise that this video was made 7 years ago but it is still just perfect. I have been sewing for more than 70 years but have learned a lot of new tips. Thank you Ms Baker for helping an old dog from England learn a few new tricks.

      Hello, Bridget, Thanks so much for writing! You don't sound like an old dog at all; but rather a lovely older lady from across the pond! I'm in my seventies myself and I believe our love of the sewing craft keeps us young. There's so many ways to insert zippers: I simply demonstrate the methods that work best for me. I imagine you could certainly show me a tip or two! Best wishes for the holiday season. Sincerely, Peg

    Very thorough tutorial! Lovely every step of the way-from start to finish! I was thinking with my out of practice moderate level of sewing skills I might tackle a piped and zippered pillow myself and decided to search for some tutorials to see what I was up against. This tutorial actually made me think I could possibly do this! Peg's voice and her demeanor are both so encouraging! Thanks for taking the time to share your expertise with us!

    Thank you for a wonderful tutorial! Your instructions are so clear, and your calm speaking is very soothing and encouraging. I felt quite better about myself as a sewer when you reminded us that small mistakes don't necessarily reflect on the seamstress, but often have a lot to do with the materials (no excuse for not taking the time to fix those corners into corners that we can be proud of, of course, but the encouragement was very much appreciated!). Thank you again for taking the time to put up this lesson! :-)

    Thank you for the well done videos. May I add a suggestion for doing corners? I am primarily a fashion seamstress, one of the techniques I learned long ago for collar and cuff corners was to shorten the stitches starting about a 1/2" before the corner and a 1/2" after the corner, then return it to the normal length. Also, if you ever so slightly curve around the corner instead of at right angles, you come up with a stronger and smoother corner. Then correct if need be and trim the excess. It will not look rounded unless it has been exaggerated in the stitching process. I have used this on pillows as well as clothing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so generously!

    Thanks to you I just made my first pillow. I had never owned a sewing machine and didn't know anything at all. Not even the difference between piping and cording. I used cording and even though the matching end and didn't turn out great I think I'll be the only one who notices ;) the biggest problem I had was one of the corners was not cut or sewn correctly so it's a little wonky . I'm just going to flip it on its side in again hope nobody sees it. I could not have done it without this video. Thank you

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Gail, thank you so much for writing! The machine in this video is an industrial: Juki DDL-8700. I bought it in 2011 and sold it last year when I retired. I miss it, but we are traveling quite a bit and my machine deserved to be in a good home, being used daily. If you're interested in a machine like this, I encourage you to do some research on them. I paid about $1,200 for it, including the table, motor and set up. It's a workhorse, but sews only forward and backwards; no zigzag or fancy stitches. The iron is a Rowenta tank iron. I don't believe they make the model shown in the video, but here's what is comparable: www.amazon.com/Rowenta-DG8624U1-Perfect-Advanced-Technology/dp/B084JBZPLG/ref=sr_1_6?crid=3128EWI0NQLJA&dchild=1&keywords=rowenta+iron&qid=1617833952&sprefix=Rowena%2Caps%2C273&sr=8-6
      I've used Rowentas for several years. With daily and heavy use, expect them to last about 3 years. At close to $100 per year, it amortizes at less than $10/month. I considered it a good investment for beautiful professional results. There are other good brands out there; Rowenta just happens to be the one I've had the most experience with.
      Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm here for you. Sincerely, Peg

    I plan to make one in a 12x20 lumbar size for my son’s nursery! So I just cut the fabric at 12x20? I’ll have to look at your comments for the other size pieces of fabric.

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Jill, if 12x20 is the finished dimensions, you’ll need to add 1/2” to each of the four sides for seam allowances. The cut dimensions will then be 13x21. If you have more questions please write to me at littlebug903@yahoo.com. I’m here for you! Peg

    This was very helpful! I hadn't made pillows with piping for years and I couldn't remember some steps. Plus I now know how to put a zipper in my pillows as well! Thank you. Just one question: why is it that some other pillows videos seem to have extra fabric draping at each corner? As in, the extra fabric tends to "hang" and make the pillow ill fitting or not look square? I want to avoid that. Is it b/c the sewer is stretching the fabric too much?

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, Christine, Thank you for writing! The condition you may be referring to, where pillow corners looks sloppy, unstuffed and pointy, is called "dog-earred". It is more pronounced when the pillow form is "fat" and especially made of molded foam. There is a solution and this video is a good one. th-cam.com/video/gGPPwwvuEWo/w-d-xo.html

    I am hoping that could recommend a good iron for me. Yous has the full soleplate in stainless. lots of steam holes and a powerful blast of steam. good cord director too. I have been through so many irons, gravitys, rowentas, cheapies now. I. dislike the auto off every 3 minutes too. thank you Peg.

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for writing. I've had many irons over the years. I believe the one in the video is a Rowenta tank model. When an iron is on for long periods of time (2 or more hours) its lifespan will definitely be affected. During my professional career I found I was replacing my iron every two to three years. Now, I'm retired and am enjoying quilting and other textile crafts. I'm using an iron by Panasonic. "Panasonic NI-WL600 Cordless, Portable 1500W Contoured Multi-Directional Steam/Dry Iron". I don't think it would hold up to professional work, but I really love it for the sewing I do now. It does have auto off but it heats back up very quickly. Best of luck in your decision. I'd love to hear when you decide. Please stay in touch. Happy New Year, Peg

    As a complete beginner I'm not sure that the "notching" was a good idea. This was a catastrophe for me. Much easier and less hassle to mark the material. I'm half way to making my first ever "piped" cover so thank you for the easy instructions.

      Dear Michelle, Thanks for writing! Sometimes notching is not a good idea for me either; for instance, if the fabric frays easily when cut. Sometimes marking is a better way to go. It's Patsy again! It's been a while since I sewed up some pillows. I have a client whose dog is always chewing up pillow corners & she's been bringing those to me. For those, I'll just stitch across the bottom or side, depending on where the damage is - and there's no piping involved. She now wants 6 pillow shams made for existing pillows, plus 2 more that she hasn't decided what she wants them to look like. I struggled with the first one, trying to remember how the zipper/cording combo would be assembled. Then I remembered that I saved your video! I ripped the first pillow apart & used your method for all 6. I'm 4 pillows in & wanted to stop & say THANK YOU again! I appreciate you sharing your talents with us!

    Hi, although your camera work is great, I do have a question. When you sew the first side of the zipper in - sewing to the side without welting - you say you line the edge of the fabric to the teeth. It looks like the fabric edge is covering both rows of teeth, not just one edge of teeth. Is that correct?

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Linda, Thanks for writing. After watching this video closely I can see that it certainly looks that way. Perhaps the fabric edge is going over a bit. The idea is to align the zipper and fabric so that the needle catches all layers of pillow fabric and zipper fabric. Have you had difficulty with this process? Let me know if you have any more questions: I'm here for you. Sincerely, Peg

    Thanks so much - great guidelines. Don't you have to cross-tack the end of the zipper that you cut off to keep it from coming apart?

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Harvey, Thanks for writing and posing an excellent question. Yes, normally, a cross-tack or fabric tag is needed when using zippers by the yard. When I am concerned with bulk in a pillow cover, however, I sew over the loose zipper ends during the "stitch in the ditch" process; pillow forms are often soft and easy to insert. When sewing boxed cushions, though, I sew a fabric tag over the zipper ends. That may not be apparent in my cushion videos since I made those several years ago. I retired in 2018 and have not updated my tutorials. Thanks again for writing! Peg

    I have made pillow covers with zippers before, but was afraid of the cording. Thanks so much for your video, which is perfect. I appreciate all your helpful tips! I tried one pillow cover yesterday, but had a lot of trouble with the cording that was recommended to me as washable. It is way too stiff. Otherwise everything worked well, thanks to you. Do you have a recommendation for a washable, but pliable, cording? I have been able to find only the cellulose, which I'm afraid will not take many washings, and the plastic, which I think would require a radius on the corners.

      Hello, Lyn, Thank you for writing. I believe that iron is a Rowenta model. It's been a while since I made this tutorial and that iron as long since seen it's demise (daily use of several hours really takes it's toll on irons). I have retired and have not purchased another tank iron. In the past, I had a lot of confidence in the Rowenta brand. If you are sewing every day, and you keep your iron on for several hours, it may be worth investing in a good quality tank iron. One thing that bothers me is the raw edges of the fabric that are not treated and threads might keep falling. Can I fold the fabric and stitch it to hide these edges? Does it affect pillow corners? Or maybe I can just lock it with a machine so it looks neat.

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, Katerina, Thank you for writing! I agree that treating the raw edges is important, especially if the finished product will be machine washed. First, let me say that I often over-cast the raw edges after joining all the seams. If the fabric is heavy, I over-cast individually after the piping has been added. Your suggestion of folding the fabric would increase the bulk, but, if you are not using piping, you could "flat-fell" the seams as when making pillow cases.

    Thank you so much for such a clear video. I am making 6 cushions in silk . I have backed the silk with cotton to hopefully reinforce the silk. I have nearly finished the first one, but suspect I have over pressed the silk - it is quite hard to get all the creases out. Should I use steam or not and should I use a pressing cloth ? I would be really grateful for your guidance as I love the silk, but feel I am pressing out the body of the material. Mary

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Mary, Thank you so much for writing. Your project sounds wonderfully challenging! I imagine once you get through this, you'll be a silk expert. Before you go much further, try this solution that I googled. www.wikihow.com/Iron-Silk I send this to you because I haven't sewn silk in a while, although I recall using steam and a pressing cloth. One thing to be very careful of is "dribbles" of moisture from your iron. This could possibly leave a water stain. Otherwise, I think you are on the right track. Be aware also that not all silk fabrics are the same. There can be subtle variations in content and/or processing that can affect its performance. All this being said, I definitely want to hear more. If you would like to share details, photos or ask more questions, please write to me at littlebug903@yahoo.com. I look forward to hearing from you. Happy New Year! Peg littlebugslipcovers.com

Thanks to you I finished the first cushion today and am reasonably pleased with it. By number 6 I should either be better at it or throwing them at the wall! I'll take a photo when I have finished them. I have done tapered corners which gave me a bit of a problem with the zip - should have thought about that! Anyway your videos made all the difference ,thank you so much.

    I'm making 6 pillows with piping & zippers for a client & your videos were wonderful!! Now I'm a subscriber. My question, what's an appropriate amount to charge per pillow (she's supplied zippers & cording). Thanks!

      Dear Paula, Thank you for writing and for becoming a subscriber. As for pricing, I usually charge $25 for pillows, but I provide the zipper and piping. If my client is providing these supplies, the charge would be $20. My prices are based on my rate of $25/hour. I'd love to know if this is in line with your thinking. If you'd like to discuss this further, please write to my email address: littlebug903@yahoo.com and put the name of this video in the subject line. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Peg littlebugslipcovers.com

    Peg, I'm not sure what level I'd consider myself but I do know my way around a commercial machine, serger, blind hemmer, etc. What I don't need are the million different stitching options and all the fancy digital settings and features. Just a strong simple machine. That being said my funds are limited. Do you have a suggestion for such a machine that is around the $200 range? I'd really like to get started on some home projects. Thanks in advance! -Cole

      Cole Long Hi Cole, Thanks for writing. I'm with you on loving a simple straight forward work horse to get the job done! Finding such an animal takes a little research and hands-on experience. If at all possible, purchase a machine from a sewing machine store; you'll get free training and someone to talk to you if you have problems with your machine at home. About 10 years ago, I purchased a Janome mechanical (not computerized) machine. I've made many a custom slipcover on it, eventually earning enough money to purchase the industrial Juki I currently use. I still use my Janome for zig-zag and button hole stitches. I wouldn't be without it. If you'd like to discuss this further, please write to me at my email address: littlebug903@yahoo.com. Best wishes! Peg

    What about if the pillow has a 2” lip. Like a box cushion but not With the square corners. More so a rounded corner

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers

      Thank you for writing. Am I correct in understanding that your are making a round boxed cushion? If so, cut out the top and bottom rounds at the finished diameter plus 1". This will provide a 1/2" seam allowance. Make and apply your piping as normal. You'll need to be careful when sewing in the round: without the corners, you'll need to put marks on the seam allowance to insure that the top and bottom both go on evenly. Please let me know if this makes sense to you. If you have any questions, please write to my email address: littlebug903@yahoo.com. Thanks again, Peg

    Just as Marina said, this is by far the best tutorial I found. The wifey bought fabric the other day and asked me to make some replacement covers for our existing throw pillows. Now I can make them with confidence knowing they will come out perfect. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Liked and subscribed. We’ll deserved.

    Thank you so much for such an easy to follow tutorial. I followed you step by step and at the age of 50 something I've just made my first ever piped cushion cover with zip (as we say here in the UK lol). It looks fantastic! Thanks for making it all so easy Peg, I'll carry on and make the other 5 covers. From Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire, UK xx

    I always watch your tutorials - they are clear , good solid technique , and no drama - keeps me calm and reassured . Me and my sewing machine sometimes have a stand-off in attitude! the sewing machine usually wins , but your tutorials give me hope.
    Thankyou.

      Thank you for your kind compliments! I can relate to the love/hate relationship with our sewing machines, but I think we can admit there's more love than not. I haven't uploaded tutorials for quite a few years. I retired almost six years ago at age 70 and am enjoying simple sewing pleasures. However, please let me know if you ever have any questions; I'm here for you. Peg
