Great job! I have done a fair amount of soldering work and I felt a certain sweaty fear watching a few parts of this installation. Your tutorial was superb.
Tacking in the center really helps because the cable is not perfectly flat. As the video shows, you want to hold it down as you work your way out, which will push the slack out. If you tack the ends and work your way toward the center then you will be pushing the vertical slack together into a tighter and tighter arch that will never go flat in the middle. Releasing that slack by reflowing connections along the way to one edge means shifting all of that vertical slack into horizontal alignment, which is likely to cause misalignment if your connections were already aligned before reflowing. The reason this isn’t a problem when starting from the middle and working out is because any alignment shift from flattening the cable is effectively halved by being distributed equally in opposite directions.
The serial port is used for the ps link cable that is used for the command and conquer series of games such as red alert as well as 50 other US game titles. If you want to be able to use the multi player aspect of some of these games which require not only the serial port but the link cable and a second copy of the game and a second ps1 or the use of the second disk that was common in some of the games like the command and conquer series of games that had an allies and an axis disk.
Very cool, I didn’t know as much about the serial port. I know that Dan Kunz has a plan to maintain serial port functions with the PS1DIGITAL, but it is not released yet
Well you need to experience being a kid and coming home from school on a hot summer afternoon and booting up the PS1. This feeling cannot be replicated.
Definitely going to have to give this a shot. I love how you can see the heat from the iron make its way back to the body of the GPU and cause little spots of flux to flare up.
This was so helpful, thank you! I didn't even realize there was that test screen with the hearts. I made some solder bridges and somehow overlooked that section in the document, so this helps a ton!

Voaltar drag soldered the GPU. I know he's a soldering master, but it didn't seem like drag soldering was an issue on it as long as you have adequate skill and magnification.
Yes you can do it that way, but if it’s your first time I think it’s more dangerous to attempt drag soldering. I have repaired several failed install attempts where someone tried to drag solder and they end up moving several pins
yeah, honestly drag soldering with proper flux and solder would be ideal, maybe it's partially the camera but this dude's joints often look cold and uneven (for a few reasons it seems). good video for the general install process, definitely not for the soldering...
32:50 While testing in the game 'Driver' intro fmv, R7/G7 G0/B0 will swap hearts to x's and back for a millisecond. this repeats for 3 times during the fmv. I messed around ingame for about a hour with no issues. Is this normal behavior or should the hearts absolutely stay that way?
That's normal - the test resets itself and that's why you will briefly see x's immediately followed by hearts. It's only a problem if one connection always stays as an X

This was a really interesting video! I don’t have a lot of embedded electronics knowledge and I’ve never done any soldering. Where did you learn how to do all this? Did you start by doing game console modding?
I started learning how to solder in graduate school. I’m a scientist (not an engineer though), and at times I needed to make some small DIY projects in the lab. Eventually I took my very basic soldering skills and applied it to video games, fixing my childhood Game Boy. And from there I kept learning more and trying progressively challenging projects
