Ricky H If one can still be found in good condition that isn’t overpriced. 6:51 To be fair those trees look better on the right with the Hyperkin, they are not meant to look like a bunch of color squares, they are meant to blur and thus give the illusion of foliage with depth and shadow. Same goes for Alucard, take his hair for example, not meant to be a bunch of white squares. Perfect pixels don't work for me, it's even hard to distinguish characters from background with that level of sharpness.
There is a script doing the rounds that will edit PSX binaries to force the GTE to disable dithering by the way. That’d be worth visiting with this I’m sure.

The issue is, official lasers are not manufactured anymore, just aftermarket ones which are kinda bad and dont last as long and if you are willing to buy a used lens assembly, not only a good working one can be a bit expensive, you dont know how much it was used before and how much will last. That is why agree to John: I hate optical lenses from old consoles, I really want ODEs for every single one of them.
The prerendered backgrounds i n Chrono Cross look pretty good on the PS3 thru HDMI. The 3D models look REALLY rough, though. Which is what you would expect from a PS1 game, of course.
The difference in sound quality is amazing. I haven't messed with any of these HDMI mods before but this might be the one that makes me dip my toes in!
12:34 this may actually be the best way to play ps1 games today on more modern TV sets. Specifically the games that utilized the hand drawn backgrounds in The Resident Evil and Final Fantasy Games.
Looks like an amazing product indeed. And while the filtering is probably the least important feature by far, I wonder why they chose the outdated HQ2x instead of xBRZ+Deposterization or even SABR. As for simulating scanlines, I found nothing beats Mednafen's GOAT shader with the Goatron mask pattern.
Already ordered the PSIO waiting for PS1Digital to orders to open back up soon. Man I'm amped to check out Xenogears on this. Also found a 20 pin model Saturn locally for $150 CAD have the Fenrir installed already and have a SCART cable on the way to use with my OSSC. Retro-Bit Saturn controllers and a Brook PS4>PS1 adapter so I can have solid wireless controller setups for each. This video totally made me go yea fuck it, I'm getting both a Saturn and PS1 setup as there's just an overwhelming amount of awesome titles on them.
For awhile it seemed like the PS1 was forgotten because of the PS3 and emulators, but now we have a true digital HDMI option and an optical disc emulator is coming. I just wish there were a better way to deal with interlacing.
Great work guys love the channel, you have one hell of a set up there in the studio, looks amazing :). The BVM I have is an interesting one, not sure if any are around anymore, but its in pristine condition and I love it, It's the EV1629 Series Widescreen from Electronic visuals in Woking Surrey in the UK. This BVM is a tinkers paradise as it has no digital OSM, all good old fashioned pots and flip switches on the front pullout board. More info on request :) happy to share if you need anything :)
13:27 The "sound quality " montage features a bunch of games that use streaming yellowbook (XA) audio. Soul Blade, Tekken, and Gradius use it. I beleive Raystorm does, as well.
I’d really love an inline device similar to an OSSC/Framemeister, but can also perform higher end crt shaders such as CRT Royale. Games with pre-rendered visuals look pretty amazing with it, and I’d like to have that capability with native hardware.
It would be amazing if you guys covered Tales of Phantasia for the SNES in a future episode of DF Retro. That game was a technical masterpiece, both regarding graphics and audio!
Not a word on how it handles aspect ratios? Is there interpolation or shimmering on horizontal scaling? Does it adapt automatically between 320 and 256 pixel wide games etc. Please do a deeper dive.
Agreed. Many PS1 games used lots of strange resolution switches (for example, Final Fantasy VII's menu screen) that involved increasing the horizontal resolution while playing. I want the games to maintain their intended 4:3 aspect ratio, not be pixel perfect. I'll take a little filtering on the horizontal axis to not have to deal with shimmer while doing that.
I am super excited for this mod. I am looking forward to revisiting some of my favorite games such as FFVII, and FF IX. If only to listen to that amazing music.
Great video guys, that picture quality is amazing! This looks like a great product, although I'm completely certain I do not have the skills to install it.
I want to be able to hold onto the serial port for link cable games. Though its tempting to have this mod added to a PSOne, maybe with an optical drive emulator to make it an authentic PlayStation Classic. Those accessories are very easy to come by so it wouldn't take much to start playing games, especially those that use certain accessories or multi-tap games.

I?m disappointed Wipout3 wasn't teasted with its high res mode, amazing fast gameplay and IIRC 16:9 option. I would like to see some widescreen ps1 games in action
Yeah would've been great to see some Wip3out or 2097/xl footage. Psygnosis were kings of the ps1 era. Ditto Vagrant Story from SS
I've never had PS1Digital. I recently bought Sony Bravia 60 inch flat panel. Can't wait for PSXDigital to be released. This is the first time I plan playing Playstation1 on modern TV.
The minute I saw the Voultar video, I had a feeling this would be the device you were going to review.
I love that guys are still keeping this amazing console alive 😍
6:51 To be fair those trees look better on the right with the Hyperkin, they are not meant to look like a bunch of color squares, they are meant to blur and thus give the illusion of foliage with depth and shadow. Same goes for Alucard, take his hair for example, not meant to be a bunch of white squares. Perfect pixels don't work for me, it's even hard to distinguish characters from background with that level of sharpness.
These guys will rip on anything that's affordable.
There is a script doing the rounds that will edit PSX binaries to force the GTE to disable dithering by the way. That’d be worth visiting with this I’m sure.
The amount of creativity during the 5th gen in general and esp Ps1 was pretty outstanding. So many great games didn't get the marketing or sales they deserved and you showed one...Disruptor, fantastic 60fps first person shooter. Stuff like Omega Boost, Silent Bomber, EInhander, Vanark, Colony Wars, Armored Core, Brave Fencer Musashi, Ace Combat + many more. Loads of innovation and great content. The 6th gen keep it going too.
John must have had to reach down deep for his inner Zen, to keep a straight face when his buddy said sleepover
These comments are brilliant. Everyone I read I just see John's face again.
@@Tyranniod it was the perfect way to film that little section haha. Obviously his buddy was just making some silly reference to kids having sleepovers. But the quick Zoom made it hilarious
Regarding the laser, you can buy a brand new replacement on eBay for
The issue is, official lasers are not manufactured anymore, just aftermarket ones which are kinda bad and dont last as long and if you are willing to buy a used lens assembly, not only a good working one can be a bit expensive, you dont know how much it was used before and how much will last. That is why agree to John: I hate optical lenses from old consoles, I really want ODEs for every single one of them.
This thing is Chrono Cross ready. That's all I needed to know, now I want one.
Fantastic as always.
1:24 Valkyrie Profile music confirmed, my noble einherjars!
"To a World Becoming Impure" is the Sakuraba Motoi song we need.
So many great light gun games on the PlayStation. It's fantastic that this method doesn't eliminate analog video!!
12:34
this may actually be the best way to play ps1 games today on more modern TV sets.
Specifically the games that utilized the hand drawn backgrounds in The Resident Evil and Final Fantasy Games.
Macross VFX 2 intro song!! I like it. Old good memories with PSX.
19:28 Totally agree with this.
Macross V-FX2 "Get Free" good pick! Also, I thought I only need my 2054QM, but now I want more PVMs in my life :p
1:43 John thinks if he should pull the show
Macross VF-X-2 Theme music at the start of the video was awesome
HECKING Awesome DF retro once again!
Was not expecting to see any footage of Ray Tracers. Got that with my PS1 all those years ago!
Havent seen the vid yet, but liked it because of the Robocop shirt
I’d really love an inline device similar to an OSSC/Framemeister, but can also perform higher end crt shaders such as CRT Royale. Games with pre-rendered visuals look pretty amazing with it, and I’d like to have that capability with native hardware.
PS1 was the best console ever made imo. That gen changed everything.
Dayum - awesome! I really can’t wait for PS2digital
I still use the RF cable for my 4K TV :)
My favorite console of all time! I wished I still had it, would definitely do this mod.
Wow that's beautiful, thanks for the video!!!
Rage Racer background music. Bringing back memories from 1997!
It would be amazing if you guys covered Tales of Phantasia for the SNES in a future episode of DF Retro. That game was a technical masterpiece, both regarding graphics and audio!
I love this video, you can cut the sexual tension with a knife!
Of course one can also use a higher end receiver like a top line Denon with legacy composit analog video inputs to convert and upscale to HDMI.
I am super excited for this mod. I am looking forward to revisiting some of my favorite games such as FFVII, and FF IX. If only to listen to that amazing music.
Just saw a Voultar video soldering this, not an easy mod ... awesome!
PlayStation has been king for so long amazing
it's funny when people act like that isnt reality either.
If only this worked on ALL models, perhaps I'll wait until a version comes out that works with every version.
Digital foundey knows how to have fun 1:44
Wow. Love that you can get pixel perfect PS1 images.
I have a BVM CRT that supports 1080p.
This will be a fine experiment.
Great video guys, that picture quality is amazing! This looks like a great product, although I'm completely certain I do not have the skills to install it.
Could you display the titles of each game as they are shown or list all games that were included in this and other videos?
Found a few PS1 gems listed I never heard of, and I thought I knew it all. Kudos y'all!
