      @@ThePortlyGentleman04 ahh okay. I've 'cheated' and decided to buy straps with a carabiner. Also, with some trees being almost flat and wanting to avoid them from slipping I'm getting hooks to screw into the other side of the tree for more support and reassurance.

    This video is perfect! Just what I needed! I bought a hammock and it came with plain nylon straps. I had NO KNOT knowledge and was looking everywhere online for a tutorial like this and couldn't find one. All I could find was these blog explaining how to use tree straps which have the metal loop at one end. Thanks to you Dave, I now know the basic knots to use when hanging my hammock and it's SO EASY AND LIGHTWEIGHT. Your video was very clear, simple and easy to follow. Thanks a million times!

    Lifelong outdoorsy, sailor, macrame, etc etc... Just setup my first camping hammock outfit today with small budget. Had to get bearings going into this and now that I've got all the lines worked out, this is the exact way I had envisioned capturing all the elements because I've already got lots of straps. This was very helpful and perfect timing. Went to a park yesterday excited to get some hammock time by a picturesque creek. That did not happen. Trees that were close enough together had large diameter so my suspension system that came with the hammock was too short. Now I think I can deconstruct it to a single strand and use these knots and be successful. Will give it another try. Thanks again.

    Perfect timing!! I just slept in my hammock for the first time. Had a clever and lucky way to tie it up and adjust it to correct length, but this method is so much better in time and not binding ribbon to knots that are hard to get undone. In order to be more length adjustable, I thought I was going to have to buy adjustable tie down straps. Your method is not only easier, cheaper, but also less weight then metal straps. THANK YOU MUCH ! ! ! ! I am new to hammock camping and on a budget. This video was perfect!

    I used this same method to hang my hammock a few times this summer. It worked like a charm. I used climbers webbing I purchased from REI. Rocky gave me the idea for the climber's webbing in the You Tube video she made about a year ago. I purchased two 15 ft. pieces for next to nothing compared to the price of a pair of Atlas Straps. The webbing did the job and like David said in his video, their weight is nominal at best.

    Great video, I watched the first one you did a few years back and it was by far the most informative and no fuss way to hang a hammock. Recently, I went camping and brought my hammock and I could not remember the knots. After some searching on youtube for the original I found this new one which is a improvement. Nylon straps are ok but they stretch . Polyester straps won't stretch. That's why ENO came out with the Atlas straps in place of their Slap straps. Great hanging tip. I've used that method and it does work well. Thanks for sharing. I enjoy your channel very much. Enjoy & be safe !

    • @davidspassage
      @davidspassage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dennis Kuenze Thanks for tuning in. You're right, poly won't stretch, but I find that nylon is a lot easier for folks to find in local stores. I've been using poly straps for about 3-4 years now, and although they stretch at first, they do seem to stop at a certain point. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :-)

    You made this 4 years ago but I think this is the most versitile of all methods I have seen. The straps are the way to go, and I currently have straps that have the loops built in. The problem I have with that is that if they are too short I have to run line connected to that, making it a two step process. I would much rather just use the straps like you have here because YOu can carry a tremendous length. I am not to worried about the weight so i wont even cut them beyond what you have when you cut them in half. Thanks .

    Thanks for the video Dave. I just bought a hammock a few days ago from Wal-Mart. Seen some pretty good reviews in it, and considering I live in Florida, I figure to give it a try since I don't recommend tent camping due to snakes, gators & fire-ants. I kept backing up your video due to not knowing all the knots for hammock applications, and I been practicing with some paracord here at my desk. I'm hanging from high on a tree that's up a 5-6' hill and 30' away from my other good hammock tree. With a long 1" web strap it's easier to spike the end rather than fishing it through.

    With using a ENO hammock I highly suggest adding yourself an adjustable ridge line. It helped alleviate some of the hyper extension knee pressure i tended to get after laying in a ENO for an extended period. I also carried a Hennessy on my AT through hike. I now carry a blackbird with whoopies and some dutchware.

    I use very similar knots with a single 100 foot piece of climbing quality cordage, for lack of a better word since I don't think it's technically rope, but I find it interesting how quick and easy yours are with the straps.

    Great setup, this is my current setup, except I have whoopie slings which are a great addition. I personally love the extra length they provide, especially when I need to go around the big trees of the northwest.

    David's Passage...probably some of the best videos on YT. Short, simple and easy to understand. Where are you based out of?

      Central Indiana just a few minutes north of Indianapolis. Where are some good places to go in Michigan that are near the state borders of MI and IN?

      2 Hoosier Hikers There's a beautiful piece of land called the Lost Nations State Game Area near where I live that I frequent. I like to hammock camp in there, especially in winter.

    You just saved us $60! We will be trying out the system next weekend, I have full confidence. We were totatally considering hammock/tree straps at $30+ a pop for both of us. I already played with the knots and they couldn't be simpler. Oh, I don't think I'll be trimming anything -- 15 feet per line might be needed due to possible larger tree diameters. No?

    I would add a whopi sling ridge line to give easy adjustment and it would give you more of a banana shape to your hammock so you lay flatter. I love the spot you were in, thanks for sharing...
