Really appreciate the video Shug, I prefer to hang without a ridgeline but was thinking of carrying extra cord to make one in case I need to throw a bugnet on, and watching you do that knot showed me it really is a quick and easy solution ..

I just returned form trying out my hammock for the first time over night. The worst thing was I did not understand the ridge line concept. So I did not have it and I was miserable due to getting out of the hammock that was to high off the ground for my feet. It was hell getting out during the night to use the head and not having any support ! I was gong to give up the hammock but after watching your videos especially this on I’m going to give it a few mor tries!

Just finished rewatching the series again and am ordering the book. So happy to be using my hammock finally. This time around I decided I'm using the marlin spike hitch with my webbing and whoopie slings. Easiest way for me for now. You are amazing! Can't stress that enough. Thanks for all you do.

Hey Shug...loved these videos on hammocks. Watched all 12 of them and even took notes. Thank you so much for taking the time to put these together for all of us. For all the other hammock newbees out there, these are the definitive videos to watch if you want to get into hammock backpacking. Don't watch any others. I've watched other videos on TH-cam and everyone is always making something up or leaving something out or doing it wrong or leaving this step out or that step out. Shug tells you everything you need to know from beginning to end and doesn't leave anything out. He tells you not only how to do things and in the right order but he tells you the whys also. Plus he does it all outside in beautiful country and not in some living room. He also gives you links to gear and other resources. He also tells you how to stay warm in -40 degrees. Wow! And he's absolutely crazy and funny to watch. lol. Look people....these are the go-to videos if you want to do hammock camping. No I don't know Shug, never met him, not plugging his videos because I'm his cousin or something (I'm not)....just think that when someone takes the time to do something great to help us all out, he/she should be recognized.....Great work Shug....we all love you. Another excellent tutorial. Very informative for both noobs and experienced hangers. Sorry about Ol' Green Bean but at least it demonstrated what can happen when one doesn't maintain at least a 30 degree suspension angle. Ditto on The Ultimate Hang...what a great resource. Rock on in Sector 7!

Ridgeline makes perfect sense.
Just gotta share my first hammock experience, now that i know a little more about your fondness in humor.
Ft. Sherman Jungle Expert School in Panama, 1973, Hammock, Heavy, Bulky, Canvas, top, and mosquito net. Secured by it's hemp's creosote treated ropes. Finnally after 2 days with no sleep was allowed set it up just before dark between 2 - 10" diameter trees during a light rain... climbed in and knocked out for bout an hour, and felt my rump touchin the ground. Got out and saw that the 2 anchor trees had become un rooted and had meshed together at the top from what little i could see in the dark.
Good thing though... cause a few minutes later... we were under Daisy BB gun fire, courtesy of the stationed Soldiers there. The only retaliation we had for them was rushing and butt strokin the hell out em with our M-16's. All they had were those BB gun stocks to fight back with. You could here them yellin hold up, hold up, it's only part of the exercise, only part of the exercise. i could still hear those buffer springs of the 16's going bucshh, bucsshh, long after this Peed off Paratrooper had ceased his 16's bucsshhing, buffer spring vows.
Later on that day upon returning to the base to experience the many survival foods the jungle had to offer... plus having not eaten anything for the past 24 hrs. or so... The instructors had a fairly ample chow line set up for us. As we passed by each instructor server, we noticed that more than half of em had swollen cheek bones, and or busted lips. After filling ourselves with 2nds, They then told us what was on those palm leaves we'd eatin off of. The stringy barbecue looking meat was monkey, the raw fish looking meat was iguana. the rest was of a fruit or vegtative fare. After those days drinkin jungle stream water with iodine tablets in it, and our sweat smelling like an ammonia baby diaper... they showed us the machete vine cut extraction method. and it was the best water i'd ever tasted.

Its my first summer camping in a hammock the ridge line absolutely brings the comfort to the next level
I read The Ultimate Hang and decided to make my own gathered end hammock. I went on my first group hang 4th of July weekend near Mt Washington. The same happened to me, no ridgeline and hung it too straight and ripped it. Not as bad as yours did. I have now added the ridgeline to my setup to remind me to have more of a hang. Thanks to your tutelage I will be an expert hanger in no time. As far as hammock camping is concerned I'm hooked. Arigatou gozaimashita
Backcountry Kev Do itashi mashite.
I tried using a taught line hitch on my ridge line to use as an adjustment. It worked so well I've left it in place. And the dead end of the hitch I used a reef knot to attach a shock cord which is half the length of the ridge line then taught line hitch the other end to the ridge line and it can slide up or down the ridge line and stays where you put it. And this gives me a stretchable attachment for my eno guardian bug net. And under quilt. The adjustable ridge line is great because you can mark where you like it and still easily adjust it without the tag end of a whoopie sling hangin down. Lots of words to describe something so simple. I'll be doing a video showing this in a bit more detail soon. Thanks. Love your tutorials. You've been my hammock inspiration. And I've learned soooooooo much from you.

BushcraftCambridge is my nephew. We camped out this past week in an offgrid site he literally built with his own hands, and I can verify, his hammock and bush skills are super awesome. I spent time finally in his hammocks and I felt less pain than in normal beds, while on my roadtrip!

I am 53, got back from ground camping last month; had slept almost not at all, just warn out with ground sleeping. for some reason I went to youtube and punched in hammock. Your masterfully entertaining vids pulled me right in. My hammock is ordered, have my slings made, working on my under quilt. I am ready for some fall and winter camping up here in the great white north of Eastern Ontario, I camp the lakes up around Calabogie Peaks; wonderful crown land area. Thanks so much for this and all of your tutorials. I was sent to watch your tutorials by our Scoutmaster. I have learned so many knots, so much about hammock camping, and I'm not even the one camping, my son is! I set up a ridgeline for the hammock while using your videos as a wonderful guideline. My husband and son helped, and we also set up the tarp ridgeline. Prusik knot, bowline, trucker's hitch, marlin spike...I can do 'em all now. I see where they're needed. Sent son off this morning for his first hiking trip with his new hammock and I know with having that ridgeline (with prusiks) on his hammock he'll be at the right angle to get some sleep. The rest is up to him! Thanks again for taking the time to school us noobs on all of this. : )

Hey Shug. I'll be honest. When I watched the first video with you in it (don't recall which one) I thought you were a foolish good ball and would not like your videos. BUT after watching more of you, your goofy attitude is a welcome change from so many videos on TH-cam. I for one really enjoy your entertaining and educational videos. Don't change anything and keep up the great work.

I wish I had seen this about two weeks ago. I had just finished whipping the ends of my hammock, made my whoopee slings and headed for the back yard. Hung the hammock between two trees, crawled in and immediately knew what it felt like to be a pea inside a pea pod. I couldn't lay on an angle and when I put my daughter in the hammock she became a pea as well. The both of us were able to sleep in it at one time but the rope running through the channel at the end of the hammock broke and now it just doesn't fit right any more since I whipped the ends. Brand new it did not have a ridge line but I bet a ridge line would cure my problems now. Thanks for the great vids my daughter and I enjoy watching them together.

Late to the party, but not to hanging.Thanks for a great tutorial! Used to use (and still do when luxury camping) a HH, but switched to a Doublenest because I spend a lot of time on a C-17 and have to share a small amount of space with a lot of others hanging. The consistency of a ridgeline allows me to hang almost anywhere whether its between trucks, pallets, the airplane frame, or any combination!

Oh boy, what a difference. The problem now is that after setting it up, lay in it to test and I fall asleep. lol. Now I see why you use a hammock. Thanks Shug!! Love the pointers. Learned a new knot, added a book to my list, and found a new technique to try!! I have always sent my ridgeline to the tree, and threw my rain fly over that. I had this idea that it would keep the tarp stationary...not pulling the stakes out of the ground, as I sway left n right. I'm going to try your method and see how I like it next time I'm out. my jaw dropped when you hopped out and your hammock ripped. I have a similar green hammock I made years ago that is my go to. I have other much more expensive full featured hammocks but my greenie that cost about $20 is my favorite...My condolences.

I love sleeping in my hammock, yet I've never slept at an angle. I wake up feeling great unlike when I sleep in a tent. However, I am going to try the ridgeline as well as the angle and see what happens. Going backpacking in a couple of weeks so we'll see how it goes. Very informative, thanks!

I have found the 83% rule on ridgeline length is VERY helpful. If I experiment a little, usually just another inch or two shorter than this, I can make the calf ridge disappear. Vivi the adjustable ridgeline! WooHoo! Oh...I mean Whoa Buddeeeee!

My condolences on the Green Bean hammock, maybe it's what was meant to be? Anyway, another fine production and very informative. I have a budget Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro...so I'm not sure how to rig the ridgeline....but I'm gonna try. BTW the bits with the clown nose in between the frames were hilarious! Thanks for the tutor session Shug, much appreciated.

Forgot about old green bean!Came back here for the ridgeline formula for a buddy and had to watch it again!

I like my ridge line. I may adjust for more sag. But the main reason I have it, is for the storage bag that can slide to hold my glasses, and etc. Plus, the ridge line is the same length every time, regardless how tight you make your tree connections. I use a plain old sil-nylon tarp, 7 x 10. The 10' length runs along another ridge line with the prusik knot at both ridge line grommets. I'm easily able to center the tarp over the hammock. I've seen your setups before and they have helped me get my sleeping system together and I'm really happy with it. I think my tarp is about 18 oz.

Ron Briz I went on a cycling trip this June and carried my hammock (w/ ridge line) as my sleeping system. I hung ALL SORTS of things from my RL! Most times it looked more like a clothes line than a ridge line. :)

Thanks for the video. I have been attaching my ENO bugnet to my rainfly ridgeline. It works, but when my hammock swings, it pulls against the net and the fly shifts around. I added a ridgeline like yours to my hammock, put the net over the hammock and new ridgeline, and now the net and hammock swing together without affecting the fly.
